I’ve got a Ford Focus with about that many miles. Doesn’t give me any trouble. That battery. Wow. Amazing it started

You guys did it the hard way. Fan and shroud remove and it's out. P/S steering pulley has to come out and three bolts done. Pulls right out to get to plug and wire. Easy peasy.

By the way from the top.

Neither of us could reach the alternator from the top nor could we reach any of the bolts holding it in.

I’m totally amazed at how you’re fixing your car yourself. How much money do you think you saved I know in New York City the dealers charge almost $200 an hour.

Thanks! Google says a GX470 alternator replacement runs $564-646 on average. I’d say I probably saved $400-500 if I were to guess. The alternator replacement was around 180.

Only problem is trying to watch the video with the sidekick talking in the background over you. Other than that…I just figured out why my Lexus gx470 2006 (200,000+ miles) was acting the exact same way, even after buying another battery ;-;

My power steering pump needs replaced before winter. My 04 GX has original alternator. Should I replace the alternator while I’m in there? Looks like it would give easier access to the power steering pump.

I would recommend running it by AutoZone or advance auto parts and having them do a free alternator test. See how that comes back. If it comes back strong as can be, I would leave it, but if it’s going to start to cause issues and comes back looking iffy, definitely would not hurt to replace it. And if you do replace it, go OEM.

Honestly not 100% sure, I’ve never looked too much into it. Should I figure it out though I’ll come back here and let you know

@@jamesoberg8809and yet people online keep spreading the bad advice of removing the battery cable while the car is running to test the alternator. Dang internet!! Thanks for the comment. You possibly saved my ECU by warning me not to do it.

Yikes! The condition of your engine compartment and the horrible corrosion of you battery leads! God knows how long that alternator had to struggle with poor irregular power from that battery! Strained and finally died!

With over 240,000 miles on the original alternator I can’t be too upset… I can assure you though that the battery has been cleaned up since and looks much nicer. Didn’t clean it up from when I got it until then.
