Fela praised Idi Amin because he was a Pan-Africanist. Idi Amin fought for African emancipation but later went out of line. When this song was released, Idi Amin was all about African unity.

@chic chi Lol, yeah, the whole Entebbe hostage crisis that Idi Amin played a direct role in was pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things i guess.... and fuck those 100,000+ people he killed for disagreeing with his politics, right? lmao his regime was literally marred by rampant human rights abuses, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. Go dig up a mass grave somewhere in Uganda from the Amin regime and tell me " *whose* media and propaganda" that is. Idi Amin was pretty out of line, I know it's cool and edgy to say online that all these African dictators were really onto something, but, no, they're sellouts. Mugabe, Mobutu, etc. They did what they did (sticking it to the west) out of selfishness and greed, not for the justice of the people they represent. Don't get it twisted. Real leaders like Mandela or Lumumba or Kenyatta are much more praise worthy.

I find Fela's praise for Idi Amin in this song and Underground System contradictory. Idi Amin killed a lot of Acholi and Lango people. People of different tribes to his. Now how can any one listen to a person like that for African unity? I won't. Seriously, tribalism is the virus Africans have to cure. Before ever African unity is championed. Otherwise it would be pointless, just as the idea has never amounted to anything but talk, talk, talk and a lot of songs. Most of those who normally preach it are tribalistic. Their loyaty is to their tribes first.

Africans sold slaves but that wasn't the major source of slaves...only a fraction of slaves were sold (mainly captives and prisoners of tribal wars) instead of being killed for European materials and money. Each tribe and kingdom saw itself as a sovereign nation that would go to war with other tribes to conquer and subdue lands just like every other human society in the old days to expand kingdoms. Majority of slaves were captured by European and Arabians slave traders. They had sophisticated weapons. Sometimes they would conquer a whole village and sell everyone into slavery including Kings, princesses, princes,women and sometimes children. It's a horrible history!
