I think our fan base needs to read about the Washington Capitals and what they went through to win a Stanley Cup. It's not all winning, rainbows and sunshine to find your way to a cup but rather an assembly of great players who learn what it takes to win as a team by losing and growing as a team. I see this in the Leafs. Maybe not this year but we're so close to finding our groove. Pain and learning are what it will take and we are certainly feeling the pain and hopefully the team is learning.

There are 82 games in an NHL regular season, none more important in the standings than the rest. This, though, felt like a tipping point. Trotz was done backing off. In the dressing room afterward, he lit into his charges. He chastised the group, but he also called out individuals. “What I said was from my heart,” Trotz said. “It wasn’t about X’s and O’s. It was about what I think they are inside, what they should show - not what they’re showing on the ice right now, because that wasn’t them. It was more about: ‘This is what you really are, and you know it and I know it. Now let’s show it and not this [stuff] that we’re showing now, because this is not you guys.’ ” Players have not spoken publicly about precisely what Trotz said. But two things were clear: His speech was unprecedented, and it got their attention. “Trotzy said some words that I think were necessary for people to hear, words that he had never really said to us before,” Oshie said. “I think it kind of hit home for some guys.” www.washingtonpost.com/sports/capitals/the-capitals-season--from-bitter-disappointment-to-a-stanley-cup/2018/06/09/6ba5a534-6c05-11e8-bea7-c8eb28bc52b1_story.html?noredirect=on&.d168c02146aa

Babcock isn’t a great coach. He’s had the benefit of great talent to succeed the basic principles, but when the game gets tough, he doesn’t do anything special. He doesn’t adjust. Once the team is figured out and talent and hard work can’t carry you to victory, then you will get moderate success. Though, the right side of defence is just not good enough.
@colinlata62245 жыл бұрын
I mean I remember certain points of his time with Detroit where their best players (Zetterberg & Datsyuk) were injured and Detroit managed to remain in a playoff spot without their top level talent. I wouldn't immediately call Babs a bad coach, but his thinking is a little archaic.
@Trag1cMag1c5 жыл бұрын
Zero adjustments. You nailed it. If the Leafs play a team that won't let them enter the offensive zone easily, they are screwed. They just keep forcing it, and failing at it, and icings or turnovers ensue. And we get to watch them try it over and over and over for 60 minutes. If I were the coach the play would be to cross the redline, shoot it on net, and rush the goalie, forcing a whistle. Then we'd start with an offensive zone faceoff. At least we'd have a chance to win the draw and start a cycle in their end. Aside from Human {and maybe Brown} they don't have the assets to play a dump and chase game regularly. Again. Force the goalie to hold on to a weak shot, and establish zone time after a face-off. It's the one concept they haven't used under Babcock.

Meelad Do you think they tanked?
@donnatroop63265 жыл бұрын
I feel their unstable nature and a clear possibility of missing the playoffs is a result of four factors: 1) They believe the hype that they are a Stanley Cup favourite (no more) and that is an insidious spirit crusher and can kill the work ethic needed to succeed; 2) Nylander was frequently a floater and in spite of his great talent, should have been traded rather than signed for almost $7 mill per year; 3) they are constantly unable to extricate themselves from their own end because of defensive (mostly right side) weakness and other team's ability to focus on that glaring liability and cycle the puck with impunity; and 4) as Babs says, they play soft - especially on the forecheck. As for the Nylander story, it turned into a soap opera and I think probably helped poison the room - so he waltzes in with his 7 mill while everyone else was out working. I'd be pissed, too.

I know Babcock hasn’t been coaching very well as of late, but there should be absolutely 0 discussion about his job security, his teams have always been well coached and he’s made the playoffs every year since getting Matthews. It’s not his fault that he doesn’t have the necessary players for a decent d core. Hainsey has been really solid but he is not a top line d man anymore, zaitsev has been suspect all year, dermott still too young, and gardener great on the offensive but way to inconsistent in his own end. They need to shake things up on the D side otherwise will be hard for them in the postseason when everything tightens up.

Okay seriously though. When do the Leafs look at this team and question whether or not Babcock is working. The roster has continued to improve, and yet the team seems to have the same problems they have since babs got here. Slow starts, bad defense all around and at least 25 games a season they just dont work at ALL for 75% of the game. All of that is coaching. Maybe its Babs. Maybe it's the assistants. I don't think Hamilton or Pietrangelo fix this team. Babcock refuses to use guys like Holl and Marincin, even on back to backs. I honestly believe if there werent any back to backs, Babcock would play Andersen 72 games a season. He refuses to scratch guys like Zaitsev, Lindholm and Brown who have all had horrid seasons especially on the offensive side of the game. The long pass breakout DOES NOT WORK and they refuse to look into a different breakout. Hainsey CANNOT play over 20 mins a night and guys like Nylander, Johnsson and Kapanen need to play over 13 mins a night. This team has major issues and I honestly believe one of them is their coach.

Marc Micciola Mark Dejczak It’s sure starting to look like it. Making the dumbest fucking moves I’ve ever seen. Keeps juggling the lines like he’s in a fucking circus act. Pulls the goalie when we don’t even have full possession and wonders why the puck flies all the way to our net moments after pulling the goalie. Just like he did against Colorado. It’s a fucking joke. This doesn’t feel like an average team “slump”. No one other than Marner is producing consistently. Everyone just looks off. You’d think that the win in Tampa would be a great confidence boost, but no, they’re back to the mediocre, predictable play style and Babcock doesn’t seem to want to do anything about it.

The Kadri line shouldn't have been broken up either, and guess what, Matty's line should not have. The 4th line should have though, Moore should have been in there. I did like Matty on Tavare's left wing but not for just one shift! To be fair, Leafs might have snuck one more in and turned the game, but Luongo was not having it. With Freddy in net Leafs might have won it, but they lost, sigh.

Steve, I'm pretty much in the same spot as you are right now. But, first and foremost I would like to say that Patrick Marleau does not get enough credit because he's approaching 40 and I confuse him for Hyman winning puck battles. Quite frankly, PM12 looks like he's one of the only guys on the roster whom you'd ask, and he would say "I'M IN!" before you could finish the sentence. I'm going to move on to my next point now. (Transition you'd know that if you wrote a book or something hahahahaaha!) I don't know what this Leafs team is. I don't know how far they can go. I don't know if they can go far. If I had to pick two players to build a 10 year plan around it would be Matthews and Marner/Rielly? But, I feel like Nylander hasn't even gotten his leg under him yet because he hasn't been with the team for most of the season. I don't know what else to say other than I wish everybody could be a Leafs fan for a season. The highs are better than anything, but if the Leafs lose two games in a row I want to fight Tie Domi for supporting his son and wearing that trash H**s jersey.

As a fan of the podcast, I’ve heard you guys defend Babcock a lot with the idea that he simply MUST be smart enough to know what he’s doing, and that it’s you guys who must not be smart enough to see the point of it. I think in a lot of those moments, you guys have actually underestimated yourselves and overestimated Babcock, so it’s actually kind of refreshing to see the criticism of him lately? Sorry to see it at the expense of your sanity though 😅

I really expected a lot of yelling here. There just wasn’t enough yelling. Plain and simple. You gotta give more emotion Steve, that just wasn’t enough. *sees he’s watching the wrong video*. The yelling was about on par this video. Nice work steve.

I will be disappointed if the Leafs still have their first round pick at deadline. Right defense!

I wonder how hard its gonna be to caption the bad coffee rage, maybe we need a rage jar, I am sure it would generate more money for sick kids than the mariner jar. GO LEAFS GO

I’m not in anymore ... I need time away , it’s torture , it’s disappointing and even worse they just seem to make day bad , I yell at my wife , I yell at my dogs and secretly I cry in the washroom . I’ve been a fan for 40 years , it’s just time for a break

Does anyone know the stat of how often pulling a goalie for the extra attacker actually works to tie the game versus the other team scoring on the empty net?

I would like to see the NHL's stat as well as a team by team break down.

If it makes you feel any better, if the habs and Bruins win today, they'll push the Leafs down into the first wildcard spot and you'd play the Islanders in the first round.
