One of my favourite LFRs of all time. It summed up my own thoughts better than I could have. This is easily the best Leafs team I can remember cheering for and simultaneously the most infuriating. At least in the Kessel/Phaneuf era I can remember feeling like the team fought tooth and nail for every inch of ice (those teams just weren't very good). This is a stupidly talented team, and I won't say they lack heart, they just don't seem to know how to show it. One thing I remember Phaneuf doing is basically telling guys to put on their mean faces before every game and say what you will about him, I never felt like Phaneuf would let guys get away with dicking around on the ice and playing tummy-sticks with the guys on the other team between whistles. It also feels alarmingly like the coaching staff is a guy walking a bunch of super energetic dogs and even though they're moving down the sidewalk in generally the same direction, each dog is wildly pulling their own leash like a lunatic and they keep having to stop to get untangled. Babcock doesn't hold guys accountable like I thought he would. Nor does he seem to light a fire underneath them. The complacency is so evident it makes me want to vomit lol.

Steve, I paid $500 for tickets last night. They were birthday presents for my Dad. The last game we saw together was in Buffalo in 2015, and they also lost 6-2 to them. Last night, we figured we may be cursed. Buffalo was also a prelude to the Nashville 9-2 game, so I'm a little nervous for Tuesday. However, for the game last night, they really need to shoot the puck. Seeing it live, just confirmed that they enjoy passing drills in the third period when they're down by 2. As annoying as it was for the lady behind us to repeatedly yell 'SHOOT IT!', she was right. It was exhausting.

This ain’t JFJ or Burke or Nonis, this ain’t on mgmt. this is on the team on the ice. if they started showing up, not avoiding contact like a lot of them do (Brown, Naz even for the past few has been rather unnoticable, even guys like Auston), playing a bit meaner and more aggressive (both physically and play style wise), and started showing the fans some life, everyone will come around. thanks for this steve, you hit every checkmark in this leaf fans heart

I'm at a point where my outlook is: I will continue to show up to support this team, but seeing is believing. Im tired of investing emotions into this hockey team. Cheering for this team is a damned if you do, damned if you dont scenario at the moment. The wins feel hollow because of how high expectations were set, and the losses feel massive... because of how high expectations were set. I think that when the team gets confident, you can see it and hear it. When that happens, i'll start feeling amped up before games again. Cheering for this team is an automatic thing for me, which is why i hate forcibly having to alter expectations.

Ive been a leaf fan when my grandfather indroduced me to hockey, the leafs, hes from Portugal, Portugal? You would figure that he would introduce me to soccer, Benfica is, sorry was his team. Still cant believe hes gone. Hes seen the leafs win many cups. Thats my dads side, my moms irish, my grandfather on her side was an avid boxing and Montreal Canadians fan. My Godfather and uncle was a professional boxer, a wako stlyle 3rd degree blackbelt and a highly trained Muay tai fighter. Lets just say he taught me a few thing's. My dad was a huge baseball fan and actually had a call to try out for the blue jays. I live in southern Ontario, Kitchener-waterloo-cambridge, the tri citys. I chose to play hockey , baseball and my uncle showed me some really good martial arts. He was a teacher out west, in NFLD and kitchener. But the Leafs were my team, i never gave up on them, never and never will. 1993 is when they should have won the cup. I Remember when a high stick that drew blood would be a 5 minute major and a game misconduct? Wendel Clark put the team on his back, when he scored his hat trick, to tie game 6 4-4 with the Leafs up 3-2 in the series, after going 7 against Detroit and 7 against St.Louis? Then Gilmour gets high sticked, by Gretzky, right in front of all 3 referees, including Kerry Fraser. Not even a 2 minute penalty and who scores the winner in both game 6 and 7, Thats right, Gretzky. That was 26 years ago, 3 months or so short of 26 years today. But after ballard and his curse left, a whole new era of Leaf hockey should have emerged. But noooo, not the leafs, the curse continues. Those playoffs should have been a series decided by Montreal and Toronto and the Leafs would have won that series. Instead Montreal swept them. What a joke of a finals. I was 17 years old. I was already a fan at age 3 or 4. I would cry from 3 or 4 until i hit around 12, ok fine, like 16, everytime the leafs got put out, or didn't make the playoffs. I could have chose baseball, martial arts or soccer. But i chose hockey and have been a Leaf fan, not just some ordinary Leaf fan , but a never give in, give up, all in, Leafs fan for 40 years. I missed the last Leaf cup by 9 years. My Aunt was born in 1967, the year my my Irish Grandmother had her last child. Our whlle family but a few that have had way to much newfy screech and pretend they're sick, so they get hottie totties. Ive been in since 1976 and most likely in my moms womb, because she would watch the leafs and get all excited about them and talk to me, in the womb how i would be a big leaf fan. Thabks mom.

It's a rarely asked question. Oh sure the fans are in. We're sticking with this no matter what. We were with this team when they were a mediocre disaster. Better question is whether the Leafs are in. Do they want to win? Do they truly appreciate the collection of talent they have and the chance they've got? Does Matthews, Marner, Nylander, etc all realize that McDavid would probably kill someone to be in their spot? They have a great chance to do something. Guys like McDavid and Eichel are floundering in messes that can't even get in. Do the Leafs want to throw away a chance to win the Stanley Cup because they don't feel like working hard enough? Do they even believe in themselves?

Steve - Leaf Nation shares your frustration with Leafs most recent performances. Truth is over decades they go a bit soft at Christmas time and tend to coast with a lot of questionable losses after the all star game. That MO has to change. To do that they need a lot more grit than they have now. And by grit I mean forwards who finish their checks (like Boston do) and defence men who are more physical and do not let players camp out in front of the net (like JVR did recently with Rielly enjoying the best seat in the house). I know it’s not all about stats but take look at the hits stats for Leaf players after playing any team. Leafs hits stats are generally pathetic and in recent playoffs that’s where they fall down. It’s great to have team speed as long as you don’t lose the puck frequently and end up with odd man rushes coming back at you. The coaching staff need to encourage more “clean” physicality. Last time I looked hockey was a contact sport. In the playoffs there is a lot more contact than regular season. Are the Leafs in?

As a leaf fan I AM IN for the long run. But this season is a wash for me and I am over it. Looking forward to much needed changes this off season and hopefully a stronger and more consistent team next year. Let's face it, this team not going anywhere this playoffs. They are in the most powerful division in the league and are rightfully 3rd best in it. Maybe they should look into Quinnville while he is still available. I always said Babs is a bit overrated. He won with complete stacked teams.

Darryl Sutter would be a great option if the Leafs decided to replace Mike Babcock.

This team isn’t mentally prepared for games. And that falls solely on one guy, and that guy is the highest paid coach in the league.

Real fans like you Steve can see when their team isnt playing at stanley cup caliber. I agreed with your tweet at the bruins, if the leafs keep this shit up there is no way we're beating them so I found it pretty thoughtful actually that you're congratulating them in advace :)
