Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

I think you’ll find that the backup dancer was actually the keyboardist. He’s surrounded himself with keyboards so whilst it looks like he’s dancing, he’s actually playing multiple keyboards. That’s also why later you noticed him playing “one handed“. The left hand was on the other keyboard

Interesting story behind this song. The lyrics tell the story but it was true. Them going to seek shelter from the rain and coming across this band called The Sultans of Swing playing like they were at a packed venue but there were only about 6 people in the bar at the time.

Thanks for the reaction bruh, classic stuff. The "volume drops" have almost become a lost art form these days but it's called "dynamics". It takes some mastery cuz all the musicians have to be on the same page to pull it off. Creates mood, crescendo, climax, allows soloists to be heard, etc. Back in the day, we would say " break it down" and the drummer would do a fill or just a rimshot and the band would break the groove down to a whisper. You could feel the audience instinctively get quiet in anticipation. With technology, we've made real strides musically but unfortunately we've lost some human interaction and feeling along the way.

One of the things I love about this song is the recognition given to "guitar George, he knows all the chords". That's George Young, oldest brother of Malcolm and Angus from ACDC, also the rhythm guitarist and co song writer with lead guitarist Harry Vander, from 60's Aussie band The Easy beats. Dire straights definitely needs more of your attention, they're well worth it. 😘👌💖

What a birthday treat for me. I love this band and especially this song. They were so outstanding I don't even have a word for it. Mark Knopfler kept playing long after the band broke up. As lead guitarist and lead singer, he brought so much to the band, yet every one of the was a stand out. Mark went on to work with Emmylou Harris for a couple of years, and they released an album that is fantastic. You should react to their song IF This is Goodbye.

Hey dude, I've watched this reaction many times and just now decided to comment (#nerdtalk incoming!): When you're asking wether they're getting "quieter" before the chorus - Yes. Dire Straits were masters of musical DYNAMIC which describes the range between the points of lowest and highest volume within a song. The larger said range, the more dynamic the song is. This is being displayed jawdroppingly good when they enter the bridge part (@8:12) from which they then build up again towards the loudest part at the end. You can even see the bass being manually decreased in volume (@10:06) by turning its volume knob (or Potentiometer) and later being increased again. As opposed to having the audio engineer do that from the soundpit. Amazing stuff.

it's been said that you can judge the performance to expect by the number of sweat bands Mark is wearing :) And yes that drummer is fire. This is one of my favourites. I think I'm right in saying that the younger guy in the black tanktop is Mark's brother. If you haven't yet heard Gary Moore, I'd suggest his appearance at the Montreux Festival , Still Got the Blues, or Parisienne Walkways, or any really. One of the best without a doubt.

Ha ha, just love the way you called them 'these old guys' - this concert was in 1983, Mark Knopfler (lead guitar and singer/songwriter) was 33 and the guy in the white suit, John Illsley, was 34! Sadly I never saw Dire Straits but I had the pleasure of seeing Mark in concert twice in 2019. He's lost his hair and maybe a bit of dexterity on the guitar but there's no doubt when he steps on stage you're in the presence of greatness. For a similar kind of sound, try 'Tunnel Of Love' (my favourite). For a slower sound, try 'Romeo and Juliet' or 'Your Latest Trick'. For something more serious, try 'Telegraph Road' or 'Brothers In Arms'. For something fun try 'Money For Nothing'. Great reaction!

Dire Straits bro! That was our sound in the outgoing 70's and starting into the 80's. Leadsinger and leadguitarist's Mark Knopfler's sound until this day has remained as unique as can be! He has grown older but I believe he is still performing. Bands like this made it reasonable to save up for a decent sound system other than just a boombox or a walkman. You wanted these guys to perform inside your living room or in your kid's room depending your age. More of that bro, can't go wrong with Dire Straits.

You'd lose your bet, Van (that they'd been playing since teenagers). Mark's little bro David was rhythm guitarist and he left early after the 1st record; drummer Pick Withers thought he found a better gig elsewhere too. Dude lol! I love it! Seeing young folks discovering truly extraordinary live music. No auto tune, no pitch corrected vocals, just sheer raw talent! This is one of my favorite videos because it shows you what todays music will never have… authentic talent, they are actually playing and actually singing live, no lip syncing to digitally mastered studio recorded vocals or instrumental backing tracks played for them to pretend too. You will rarely if ever see an actual “live” performance from any artist today, simply because technology has made real talent obsolete. Taylor Swift!!??? Really!? The backup guitar player is mark knopler’s brother, so yeah, they played together a lot. He ended up leaving the band to go solo
