Nirvana crushed thrash metal at the time. They also killed guitar solos for some time. Guitar solos phased out at this time in the 90s. Huge era change for heavy music at the time. I was in a metal band at the time, and one concert everyone had Overkill shirts on. Nirvana came out, and the next week everyone was wearing flannel shirts. I remember it THAT vividly.

Nirvana aren't known for their guitar solos or complex songs. They're known for their unique atmosphere and lyrics that reflected the youth of Generation X. Guitarist, vocalist, and lyricist Kurt Cobain tragically passed away in 1994, three years after this song, of a presumed suicide (though there's also wide speculation that it was murder). Hey was very much viewed as a cultural icon in the 5 years they were famous and the day he died struck millions of teens and young adults into grief. Drummer Dave Grohl, as many have and will point out, has gone on to form and/or play in various groups, such as The Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Them Crooked Vultures. Bassist Krist Novoselic went to dabble in Politics after Nirvana with brief reappearances at Nirvana-related events.

Kurt has some pretty good lyrics, don't get me wrong, but there were a lot of times where he had to write a full song worth of lyrics in less than 20 mins. This lead to many of his lyrics being literal nonsense like the "mulatto, albino, gelato" thing. It isn't supposed to mean anything other than being catchy words that rhyme together.
@Gibson1961SG4 жыл бұрын
Nirvana's brand of grunge was anti flashy guitar solos and other characteristics of the Hair Metal that was dominant in the industry before grunge. Kurt also just wasn't really technically good enough at guitar to rip one of those kinds of solos anyhow. Hes was an excellent rhythm player, and his lack of musical knowledge lead him to write intuitively some complicated and nuanced melodies over some very unique chord progressions. His use of 5 chords made his progressions tonally ambiguouse enough for him to slip in and out of a number of modes for his different melodies, sometimes even in one song. 5 chords are the basic power chords everyone learns when they start guitar, named 5 chords because they're built from just the 1 and 5 from that chords major scale. This was the accidental genius of Kurt. His lack of chord shape knowledge and fucks to be given lead to him writing some the most unique and memorable melodies of his genre. Well that, and his ability to be totally emotionally involved and present in a performance, while still appearing to be in a state of inner chaos (Ozzy-esk).

While I like this song, I do have a (most likely) unpopular opinion regarding the song to share. Specifically the lyric "Here we are now. Entertain us." This very lyric is either what led to the "Me me me.. It's all about me." mindset.. or it is the result of that mindset taking over the youth in the 90's. Hard to tell which it is. I just remember back then thinking to myself "Who the hell are you to demand that you be entertained just because you exist." Still a good song.. but yeah. That is the message I got from it.. and part of why I did not delve much into grunge music beyond the more popular songs that got MTv airplay at the time. Hate this comment all you want but that is my true original reaction to the song.
