Can't wait to see these! High capacity with form factor.. makes me think all kinds of new products. Thinking an extremely compact chair with primary cells on TOP of drive system as well as the chair itself containing at least 50 percent of total capacity . . Hell even a head rest can take a huge pack of these stacked in with things designed around them . . 50mile range, big wheels but low to the ground, extreme low speed torque and still max out maybe at 10mph , toss on a nice controller with fast charging and sexy control joystick multi OLED interfaces I'd want one if I couldn't walk.

I think I figured it out, these are likely cells manufactured by SK innovation for the Hyundai Kona. These were likely slated to go into the Kona's but then once Hyundai recalled the Kona's with SK batteries, these would be sitting unused. Now they are being liquidated, and there's a good chance you face a higher than normal risk of fire using these. If you do use them, I'd advise having them in a shed and not being used inside the house. For me, it's a risk I'm not willing to take.
@tkswdr

It depends though how far tou push them. Many inverters aren't even close to EV power so manage the voltage and it should be good.
@kstorm889
@kstorm889 Жыл бұрын
@@tkswdr I understand that, but the Kona is a pretty low power car and they were catching fire at under a 3c rate. Thats very low for an NMC pouch, it's a manufacturing defect.

Yes; what happens is that the 3P could come loose if I recall correctly. So then 2P gets the juice from 3P. In our hybrid setup we pull 25Amps at max. So I bet they don't even come loose in the first place.

@typxxilps Жыл бұрын
but are these really LFP cells ? So far I am aware of LG Li Ion cells from the surplus production they had produced for Kia and Hyundai vehicles where the batteries had been burning and LG had to pay for the fully exchange at least inside the EU. I am not thinking that these are the used ones from those exchanges cause usually insurances have to pay for that which then start to destroy them. But the meanwhile surplus production that did not make it into the car and had been produced by LG might end up anywhere , also the spare batteries they had to have in stock with the then outdated design. I guess it has been a LiIon battery pack and no lifepo4 one cause LG is slowly moving to LFP

you need a BMS that can go with these - you need to test it to show how good these are - you also need to show some compelling use cases (like building a power wall or offgrid battery system). Otherwise it's hard for DIYers to figure out all these themselves.

@ericklein5097
@ericklein5097 9 ай бұрын
do you entirely lack an imagination? He showed you how you can take a 10S pack and add a 3S or 4S chunk to make a "48V" pack that'll suit your inverter and you just stack these up in parallel until you get the size you need. These are ridiculously easy to DIY, probably some of the best cells out there due to their massive size and the cell holders. Almost as easy as 280/304Ah LiFePO4 prismatics cells. Looks like the bus bars on the ends make it stupid easy to wire the balance wires. You don't have to use these in a stationary energy storage system since they technically do offer the power for a vehicle so long as its nothing insane. Golf Cart, ATV,...I mean you could even potentially use these on a large bike if you aren't using a high voltage....36V seems manageable but 48V is much more common...you'd have range for DAYS. So for a cargo bike if you have the room to do a 12S or 13S pack you could potentially ride for 2 or 3 days before you even think about charging. So long as you're willing to tackle the liquid cooling you could definitely put these in a small EV and they are without a doubt some of the most energy dense cells you could get at this price. So many people make some janky packs with pouch cells because the cell holders aren't available (thanks big companies for forcing us to buy on a gray market that often doesn't include all the accessories because its just a matter of getting whatever we can get) and I think its moderately dangerous to DIY a way of connecting tabs and of course an ultrasonic welding machine is way out of the hobbyists price range. Getting a connection that doesn't have questionable resistance consistency means DIY'ing power pouch cells is just a real pain in the ass and you also want to do your best to imitate the cell compression the engineers designed for these things....and there's a million different sizes of pouches out there so you're not going to find holders meant for another model that fits. So TLDR; what do you need to power that these WOULDN'T work for?

Nice score, trying to do the simple math on this, to work this into a 51v pack for a 48v system I would need 14 of these? Would mixing the Li-ion chemistry of these with LifePo4's cause an issue? I would assume not as the BMS's of each type of battery would be responsible for the charge? Love the vids!

i hope you intend on breaking the modules into 1s3p groupings to feed the supply that is sold out because $500+ is a bit much for 12 cells . i looked and 218 ah / 3 p makes 72ah. any more than 72ah would make a 12s too heavy for ebike use. i would buy 4 1s3p modules and re configure them to to 12s1p. why i want to do that too is it helps keep the shipping in check too where they can go by ground not require such high level of hazmat declaration. if why you are able to sell them so cheap is because you are drop shipping or pre selling them so you dont have to keep stock you may want to drop ship. you can ship via air but it has to be by cargo plane NOT passenger plane so if you have to ship from china or some other country you dont have to go by sea. if the modules are already in the united states and you are buying from another recycler like licycle or batteryhookup you could drop ship from licycle or batteryhookup to the customer. thereby you dont have to pay for storage thereby keeping the costs down. another way to keep costs down is to NOT take returns unless they are defective where they are dead on arrival or a fire happens where they burn down the carrier's vehicles and/or hubs. it may be possible for you to work with uber connect to ship too. you could subsidize the battery costs via cashing out your videos.

These pouch cells don't have the lifespan of LiFePo4. They have a liquid electrolyte that will eventually evaporate and degrade battery performance. Life expectancy for these is around 300 charge/discharge cycles, or around 18 months of life. At that point, you will see considerable degradation. LiFePo4 can last upwards of 5000 charge/discharge cycles so the added expense has them beating out lipos over the long haul for an off-grid, home power application. Not to mention the added safety. IMHO

@@jehugarcia Thank you, I appreciate the comment. I saw the singles opened up again and I put in an order for 14. Under $1k for 9kwh is worth the risk I suppose. Ive had good luck in the past with your batteries, and I hope it continues. Cheers

Are we at the point where EV kits are getting close enough and affordable to do? Battery, cooling plate, charger, motor, controller, tranny adapter plate, etc. I'm ok with DIY but would rather have a kit that had all parts vs trying to find/research all the various pieces needed to assemble something functional. An "email for a quote" would be perfect for that and a customer could say "I've got a make/model/year with this ICE tranny and motor I'd like to convert to EV" and we'd get back a price with specs like HP, etc. Even a link to get this motor here, that adapter plate there, etc would work and then we'd buy your battery and BMS gear from you.

I literally just watched your video while doing research for this battery. Australia right? Any concerns since you know where these came from? Would you stop charging at 80% like Hyundai recommended? Definitely keep these in an outdoor metal shed. Have you noticed any expansion? I would think the compression bars only come on the 9s and 10s packs so one could not build a single 14s battery since there is no 14s compression bars available?
