I have a novel question - could you lay there layers and make holes (*adding heat insulating coating covering everything except the holes, and some non-electrical but heat transfering coating insnide the holes at the last stage) for a coolant to flow through them to make a large rectangular battery? The goal being getting more battery density for extremely large batteries (solar batteries, car batteries). I can't imagine the current way of stacking a tonne of cylindrical batteries wrapped in a heat insulating material is better?

yes and no... There are foil and plastic strips inside. The black stuff is graphite and some chemicals. There's no acid or something that can damage your skin... When the battery is fully discharged it's completely safe to disassemble. It's not gonna ignite or produce smoke. @@ElectronicsComputers So I had one of those Black and Deck handvacuums stop recharging on me. So I bought a $125 Hercules 5 amp 1/2 gallon cordless hand vacuum - so much better. So then I took apart the Black and Decker to recycle the lithium batteries. 3 cells. I was scared since I didn't know what would happen. I cut the wires and then I tried to remove the circuit board that was soldered on. Suddenly smoke and spark and nasty smell - so I obviously discharged one of the cells. I had forgotten to discharge the batteries since that Black and Decker kept turning off right away - not sure if it was a circuit board problem or just the batteries overused. But I know that is routine for those small handheld vacs with the recharging batteries hard-wired into them - not replaceable - they just run down real fast. So now I have the 3 lithium cells in a plastic bag and that in a plastic bucket - waiting to be driven to the recycling center. I'm not sure the best thing to do - if the wires touched maybe it will melt down another battery or something. hmm. But from your vid - it seems it will not explode - just smoke and sort of burn itself off from within like spontaneous combustion of a human.
