oled is trash in high end display, not high enough brightness for complete hdr experience, impossible for color correcting, low life cycle (especially with high brightness,) maybe oled could have a place in cheap hdr like display which considered the cost is very not likely.

I really can't fathom spending $1000+ on an LCD panel with any current technology. There's always some big drawback that money can't solve, and it would drive me crazy to see the obvious flaws knowing how much I spent. Can't wait for mini/micro-led or for OLED to magically not have burn in issues in a desktop environment. Until then, I'll be sticking with my viotek ultrawide.

UPDATE: After 5 months. Tested it against : Predator x34a, Predator z301c, LG 34GL750, LG 34UC89G + No ghosting, No coronas, No blur. I have never seen image that accurate in motion to still image. Just Perfect. + Sphere Lighting (to me is the best feature of them all). Go for Video Sync Mode when in Full Screen. It's very nice experience. + Flat Stand (Not to big, Can be put on shallow desk) + Brighter + Image Quality and Oled like Colors. I recommend Setting Digital Vibrance to 66 and gamma to 0.85 (Nvidia Panel) + Bigger + Higher Resolution + Higher Refresh Rate (HDR still available in 175Hz, 10 bpc, YCbCr422, Limited output dynamic range). Some people complain that text looks weird in 175Hz but that only applies to HDR desktop, SDR text looks OK). Since It's not OLED you can easily run 10 bpc, YCbCr422 and have excactly the same colors as in RGB. I do also have Oled TV and to get deep Blacks RGB is necessary but not for this monitor. Those are 7 you will gain over x34 There are also disadvantages. - Vertical Scan lines (When Gsync is cold). Visible when moving objects or rotating camera - Screen Flickering when Gsync Windowed Mode is selected in Nvidia settings. Appears when Gsync Module is Cold (up to 1 hour depend on application you use), visible in app like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Filmora, reWASD. //// Both of those flaws can be fixed by Disabling DEEP SLEEP in monitor options. The downside is that the gsync fan will never stop spinning and its audible. //// - Fan noise (2 of them), are annoying. - IPS Glow is massive so Viewing Angles are bad. This is not IPS you used to know. When you look at it from 45 degrees, there is no Black just grey and if the picture is dark you can't see anything, a mixture of VA and TN. When you sit in front It's OK - Gamma Mode 3 is not dark enough like x34 is. This can be corrected by making 2 necessary Actions. Go Nvidia Panel - Display - Adjust desktop color settings - drop GAMMA from 1.00 to 0.85 //// To keep Colors every Windows start - use Windows Search - type TASK SCHEDULER - Task Scheduler Library - Microsoft - Windows - WindowsColorSystem - Calibration Loader - right click on it - and DISABLE. //// - Fake HDR. Don't even try it. It's false advertisement and has nothing to do with HDR. The image is dim, not colorful and looks just Ugly. I wish it wasn't even implemented because games recognise HDR capable Monitor and kicks in The Fake HDR in Fullscreen and if game has no Option to change that you will have to run In Fullscreen Windowed to bring back SDR which looks amazing (Just boost Digital Vibrance to 66 in NVIDIA Panel and set Gama to 0.85). HDR even kicks in in 175Hz 8bit but no matter what Refresh Rate and setting u go for HDR looks the same and looks bad. Monitor doesn't offer different colour settings for SDR and HDR like TV does when HDR, DolbyVision and SDR have their independent color setting adjustments. - Volume Control (on Joystick) but there are no speakers. Left and Right activate Volume control but those shortcuts should be use for switching On/Off Crosshair and FPS counter - Lazy Menu. There are Gamer Profiles but you can not Edit, Save and Overwrite existing profiles with Crosshair or FPS counter included like Predator x34 does. You always have to go deep inside Menu and do it. Also you can not have both, only one. - Also I would like to see LG UltraGear Control Center opening minimized in TaskBar not Open on Desktop every windows start. You can help yourself and use "Actual Window Minimizer", add LG UltraGear Control Center and make it run minimized into Tray. Summary: LG did a bad job not implementing passive cooling on Gsync module. Fan Noise. Amazing Sphere Lightning experience. It's a joy to use, colors close to an OLED TV.

I totally agree with the review. The European pricing for these is a bonkers 2000-2500 euros depending on the store. For that kind of money you can buy an LG OLED TV that performs massively better for gaming in everything but refresh rate. With the somewhat more desktop friendly LG CX 48" model on the way, it's hard to justify the price of the 38GL950G. The Freesync 2 versions of these should be priced better and I hope those also offer a PbP mode and maybe some sort of backlight strobing feature. I hope Nvidia either improves the feature set of G-Sync monitors or just makes their pricing more reasonable as to me they don't offer that much benefit over Freesync 2 these days.

$550 is a very optimistic guess even if this were a TN or VA panel. I wouldn't put too much weight on MSRPs though. For instance, the 34" version of this launched last year at $1500. By July I was able to get it brand new under $700. Same with the 34" Alienware. MSRP near $1500, but often had under $1k. However because this 38" does have a unique feature set, the price will probably not fall as fast as the others.

Great review for a great monitor - thank you ! Finally it's here !! The main problem for me is, that actually there is no graphics card that can push this resolution with high framerates in modern games (RDR2, AC Odyssey, and so on). So we have the wait for the "big navi" or Ampere with 16 GB and higher performance than the 2080Ti, then it would make sense to have this great gaming monitor ! I'm watching you from this monitor ^^ Very happy with it, though having to pick the kind of compromise I want because of the DP1.4 bothers me more that I was expecting.... hopefully a firmware update will make monitors support DP2.0 in the future? No chance? Oh and I have a weird issue, not sure if it's just me or if it's a bug with the monitor. When I have the Light Sphere enabled to "Video Sync" mode there are a lot of stuttering introduced giving a feeling of reduced framerate, but in reality the metrics show high average FPS. It seems there's just a lot of stuttering which makes everything to cause headache, even this video has stuttering with the LEDs in Video Sync mode ON.

When the LG 48 inch CX OLED is released, would you consider reviewing that from a monitor perspective? 120hz/4k (once stupid HDMI 2.1 GPUs exist), with G-sync, FreeSync, full HDR support, and all the fabulous OLED goodness. 'm pretty seriously thinking about buying once and just slightly increasing my view distance. You could also run it in 3840x1600 resolution with letterboxing and I'm hoping that lowering the resolution will allow higher frequencies under HDMI 2.0. Also, I hear OLEDs are supposed to have nearly instant response times ;)

This is exactly what I'm considering. Although, if you have a macbook that might be an issue. I notice mine kinda has a bit of an input lag on my lg b9, tested it through the usb-c with a certified 60hz adaptor and I still get a small delay and differences in color around the screen :/ ... Works absolutely flawless on windows though.
@gencoserpen12604 жыл бұрын
If you run an OLED panel with letterboxing for long periods of time your panel will age unevenly. That means when you run proper 16:9 content (3840x2160) the previously letterboxed areas will appear brighter than the middle of the screen because the letterboxed areas haven't aged at all !! This happened to me on one of my older Android phones (with AMOLED screen) where the area the black navigation bar was located appeared much brighter than the rest of screen when playing full-screen games. Burn-in isn't the only problem with OLED you have to be careful with it.

Man, I've been eyeing up that monitor since it's been showcased at CES 2019 together with the LG 27GL850. I was afraid they would price it so high like they did, it's currently selling for 2k EUR here in Europe so it's a ridiculous price. As I couldn't keep waiting for it I got myself the 27GL850 so I finally got a 27 inch 1440p 144 Hz monitor as I was still gaming on my 5 year old 60 Hz screen. This would be my dream monitor but for the current price I just cannot justify spending that much money. Besides that, you also need a very beefy GPU to power it properly as the resolution is even higher than standard ultrawides and just 20% less pixels than 4k, so even a 2080 TI would not suffice to constantly push over 100 FPS onto this thing. So maybe I'd get it when the price drops to 1500-1600 EUR AND the next Nvidia gen is a lot cheaper than the current one. Man, high end gaming has become REALLY expensive...

My desk wasn't quite deep enough to enable me to put the monitor where I wanted it without compromising my mouse movements. I immediately bought a vesa desk mount, which completely solved the issue. As far as I'm concerned, I won't need another monitor until OLED 4k ultrawide 144+ hs 38+" monitors come out (as well as single gpus that can push them to their limit without much issue).

I had the opportunity to try out this monitor and returned it. Its close enough to 4k resolution that my 1080Ti was hurting to push any AAA over a decent frame rate. Also there are a LOT of games that do not support the native resolution of this monitor, which made things look stretched, or just gave black lines on the side. Also, while the monitor stand is sturdy from a front/back, it is not very sturdy side to side. As i would type on my keyboard the left/right edges of the monitor would wiggle and would make text slightly blurry while it moved. I do however, absolutely love the size of this monitor and wish it was at 3440x1440.

Although it's hidden enough that it doesn't really matter for review purposes, the sRGB color temperature probably can be adjusted in the hidden service menu. At least, this is the case on the 27GL850. It's a shame they can't quite seem to get this right in factory calibration.

So if thats the case than i think its better to upgrade to a widescreen 3440x1440 or a 3840x1600 at 144-160Hz because the RTX 3080 is more likely to be able to get that amount of frames at the widescreen resolution. Just let me hear what you guys think thanks!
@timofaust13154 жыл бұрын
Don't get too exited at 3440x1440 either. The 3080 will not give you the full frames per second in new games as well. If you want to max out fps, 1440p is still the way to go. Next generation maybe. Expect 80 to 100 fps in newer demanding titles, when everything is set to ultra.

At that price point, the 34GK950f is still the better monitor to get. Have one and love it. I hope LG continues to make them. Much less overshoot, too. Surprising to see the new 38 uses only a tiny bit more power.

LG GL850-B is the same as lg GL850? what is the difference i can't find just gl850 model in our stores
@ycageLehT4 жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure the B is for all black, no RGB. The panel remains the same.
@Astfgl4 жыл бұрын
The B at the end simply stands for the color of the housing, i.e. black. There is currently no other color variant available of this monitor that I know of, so they’re all the same.

Hi, I'm considering whether to buy the LG 34GN850 or 38GL950G monitor, from your tables I see that at 144hz with fast overdrive, the 38 has an overshot with average error 9.1%, 49% warst error and 19% error above 15%, while the 34 has 2.8% / 21.5% / 1.8%, so I wonder if the 34 is faster and has less ghosting than the 38? Or don't you see the difference?

I'd like to understand what GPU is needed for this monitor to make the most out of all the features and higher end settings? I've recently purchased an MSI RTX 2070 Super and its not detailed anywhere online how that would run on a monitor of this size/spec - any help out there? Thnx for a the great review btw!

Hey, Tim, I wanted to ask if you also use CalMAN Ultimate to get those pixel response times and under/overshoot values as well. It's just one of the many tests you do that makes Hardware Unboxed a stand out for monitor reviews and more people/reviewers should adopt this kind of testing, in my opinion.

I know LG CX 48" OLED isnt a monitor but it could be compared to one now with the high pixel density & 120hz & G-SYNC and low input lag. Will you test it out? I cant decide if I want to go with this 38" or the TV for gaming.

Tim, how do you feel about the endless false advertising of monitor refresh rates from every manufacturer? I can't help but feel it's incredibly misleading, and enough to be illegal in Australia.

I have LG's 38UC99, and it's a beautiful monitor, but I would prefer Mini-LED backlighting with better black levels over a higher refresh rate monitor. Especially playing a dark atmospheric game like RE:2 on it, the black levels were really crushed. 60hz is high enough refresh for me.

i have money to spend in a monitor like this and a 2080ti or 30xx, but i'm gonna keep my 1080 and 1080p 144hz until a perfect or semi perfect monitor, at least mini led (the contrast will be like good VA) or micro led (Oled), with hdr 1000 (minimun) no ips glow.

Any opinions between 38GL950G-B and 38WN95C-W? Seems like they are the same panel just with different input options (and one has rgb)? Or should I be considering something else at this point for 38” ultra wide?
@tubez47 Жыл бұрын
I had both at my testing but 38wn95c-w was better. I tried to see the difference between 144hz and 175hz but there was none basically. I am coming from 240hz and g8 oled. LG 38WN95CP-W is end game for me. Colours, its response times, size, thunderbolt... its just perfect.

Just an update. I managed to get 175hz working with the optical DP1.4 25M cable and also with full RGB 8bit upto 160hz. It seems the RTX 2080Ti cant drive 2 x optical DP1.4 cables with sufficient voltage to run past 100hz with 2 of the cables at the same time. So the optical cable is perfect, it's a limitation of the RTX2080ti with 2 of the optical DP converters running at the same. Loving 175hz on the desktop and in Doom Eternal!

I have the predator x34, if I switch to the LG 38GL950G, will the drop of contrast ratio from 1193 to 879 be significantly noticeable? It seems like this LG is perfect in every aspect except for the contrast ratio, I do game in semi dark rooms, usually with a few lowlight tungstens on.

I wouldn't like the ambient lighting effect around the bezel, to me it would be a slight distraction. I prefer a completely black bezel in a completely black room.
