I love both and both have strengths and weaknesses. I chose the 85 inch QN90A because the OLED anywhere close to that size was way out of my budget compared to the deal I got with Samsung. Burn in, whether still an issue or not, still weighs on me since the TV is on while I'm not home (the dog gets spoiled and my old 60 inch Sharp has been on every day on average for 16-18 hours a day for the last 11 years). Besides cost for size, I love retina searing brightness. Don't ask why as it's just a personal preference. Also, what's with so many movies now shooting such dark scenes? Even the brightest TV's have trouble with these scenes- and I find myself straining to see details. Please don't tell me it's calibration because the same movies have the same issues in movie theaters. Anyway, my TV has to serve duty in a living room that can be bright, dark, or in-between so I also need the versatility of the Samsung. Your needs may differ, but as long as your choice fits your needs and you are happy with it, then that's all that matters. I wish every person understood that with all things purchased. Maybe there would be less bashing for everything reviewed.
@jackwilson55423 жыл бұрын
Good point about the unusually dark scenes. I see them everywhere- TV shows, movies and even video games. That's a reason to get display with higher contrast and also preferably 10 bit. (As with 8 bit, you get this weird smearing when in some of those scenes, even on an OLED)
@armenmichaeli67042 жыл бұрын
@@jackwilson5542 I love dark scenes. It ignites my imagination. Making things out you don't actually see, you know. Generally, human eyes have evolved to distinguish shades of darkness (although at the expense of color). Our eyes have not, however, evolved to do the same for bright objects, so there you have it, sort of. Contrast -- yes, but not more subtle variations in brightness. This is reflected in the design of digital color space, where more data is reserved for the darker shades of color -- because we are more sensitive to it. Also, when you're watching "eye searing brightness" levels on a TV, your iris adapts by contracting -- so you can actually appreciate different levels of the eye searing brightness better, but that affects your appreciation of the intermittent dark scenes -- it takes some time for the iris to "re-adjust", even when it immediately reacts to lack of light and expands in size, your brain will fool you and there's all kinds of optical illusions it will experience before you can see in the dark well. If there's rapid succession of dark and light scenes, the brain won't bother -- like a train constantly entering and leaving tunnels -- you will either be hurt by all the sunny vistas or will just see black while in the tunnel, seldom both or neither, depending on how much of each is there by volume. One of the reasons -- beyond the obvious that is implied above -- behind why bright TVs aren't great at showing dark scenes, is because for the same native contrast ratio a bright TV will sacrifice blacks -- the contrast is just peak luminance divided by minimum measured black level. For a TV with 5000:1 contrast, if it's 1000 nits bright that gives you the minimum black level of 0.2 which is... very dark gray. Anything in a scene that's supposed to be darker than that will either be squashed by the image processing -- to compensate for ability to show the brighter grays, or the rest of the grays will be compressed into whatever limited contrast there is available to show them. With image processing turned off, one is still left with reasons that have to do with how multiple panels are sandwiched in an LCD TV, for example -- it may be much harder for a TV simply to show you two different blacks that for it to show you two different greens or whites or purples. For OLED TVs, it's mostly image processing (need that to compensate for the fact it's usually a WRGB panel, _not_ just red, green and blue diodes one may naively thing make up an OLED panel in an OLED TV) -- this is corroborated by the observation of how two OLED TVs from different manufacturers that exhibit exactly the same panel from LG, have completely different degree of "black crush" or lack thereof.
@jonniecandito1812 жыл бұрын
@@armenmichaeli6704 Who cares, dark scenes look bad when its a constant industry gimmick. You're justifying with valid reasons, but let's be real, its a trend because it's cheaper and we're in the green screen era where regular sets are often VFX. There's a reason big budget films, especially legendary ones from the 90s, are brighter than modern tight budget Netflix exclusives.

@@tears2040 There is a big difference between DV and HDR10+: Dolby Vision is always mastered by a professional colorist ... whereas HDR10+ is algorithm based ... it is adding dynamic meta data on top of a HDR10 master by using algorithms ... in other words: it is guessing ... hence an inferior approach ! There are other differences explaining why DV is used as the standard and not HDR10+ like: a studio masters it's content with the Dolby Vision format ... and automatically receives a HDR10 and SDR version from the workflow of this "one time" mastering. For HDR10+ you'll first need a mastered HDR10 version ... then you can apply the HDR10+ algorithms ... one more step (and still it's "guessing") ! For the SDR version in case of HDR10+ I am not sure whether you'll have to do another SDR mastering of the content or whether there is an algorithm based tool delivering a decent or sufficient quality output using the original HDR10 master. I can go on like this ... bottom line: HDR10+ is a fake dynamic HDR format invented by SAMSUNG to control the HDR market and in addition maintain being able to overbrighten and oversaturate pictures ... plus - instead of paying Dolby Labs for their work - generate some own profit with it ... don't think HDR10+ is for free for the OEMs ... although it's cheap ... with both meanings...

The decision should be pretty easy: when being used to a self-emissive display (plasma tv) the replacement must be self-emissive again (OLED tv). You will for sure not be happy with a transmissive display (LCD tv). After using a 60" plasma myself for 6 years I replaced it with a 65" C7 OLED in 2017 ... no regrets for even a second, the OLED turned out to be a massive improvement in all regards ... except motion because OLED tv (as LCD => all tvs today) are "sample-and-hold" displays and do not have the same visual smoothness as CRTs or Plasmas. Motion interpolation or BFI (black frame insertion) will help for watching e.g. tennis, but can cause other drawbacks like artefacts or a dimmer picture. With zones turning on and off obviously, and distractingly. Also, your rhetoric is obviously biased. And wrong.. "QLEDS" have sold, and STILL sell for OLED money (at least 'QLED's of comparable quality), or more... Just look at current pricing for a good 65" OLED, $1799 for the C1. Good point, this is definitely the kind of info that needs to be spread. Then I'd like to chip in and warn Europeans that the same goes for our QN90A, which is pretty much an American QN85A including its IPS panel! Depending on your country, get the *_QN92A_** , **_93A_** or **_94A_* instead, as those actually ARE the TV reviewed here. On top of that we have the QN95A, which is a USA QN90A as well, except the ports get replaced by a One Connect with 4x HDMI 2.1. So that's a nice option if you need more 2.1 and don't mind having a proprietary box that bricks your TV if it stops working, and is unreasonably expensive out of warranty. (Personally, I'd just get the QN92A and a 2.1 switch.) Man, why does Samsung have to overcomplicate this shit? Burn in is really a non issue with the newer lg’s. I have a almost 4 year old lg c8 with over 12k hours on it of 60/40 gaming and tv watching. It shows no signs of minimap or hud burn in
@jinx200013 жыл бұрын
many retailers also offer a warranty specific to cover burn in aswell, i have 5 years of burn in cover on my C1 for example. had it somewhere around 6 months now using it as a PC monitor but mainly gaming and watching movies aswell as youtube and its been fine. i also think the brightness issue is overblown, most people don't watch the TV in a massively lit room with fluorescent office lights for example and i dont know why anybody would have curtains or blinds open with the sun blaring in onto the TV either, its kind of an unrealistic scenario which means actually OLED's get plenty bright enough for most people. using the extra brightness of the LCD TV aswell is not really what people typically do, who uses 100 percent brightness, it kills accuracy and blows out details, a well calibrated display is actually pretty dim. But hey, only you know your situation.

Man, no one is commenting about the fact that none of the QN series of Samsung cannot show proper colors in 4K 120 Hz. They all have a flicker / interlacing artifact when used as a monitor for PC if you go 4K 120Hz

Decided to get rid of my Q90T because of horrible ghosting and bad Game Mode in favor of a C1. And even though it peaks at basically half the brightness of Q90T, perceptually the difference is not as great as numbers may lead you to believe.

Currently I don't see any complaints about burning CX OLEDs (mainly because it's the oldest on the market) and C1, With so many haters on the internet, they would certainly be full of complaints. I have a gaming CX and I avoid games with a fixed HUD (I play on an AOC Agon 32 monitor) and I have OLED LG A1 for movies. The two TV's are spectacular!

QN90A is awesome and so is the C1. Different strengths and weaknesses. Tho I do feel in many comparisons, the reviewer does tend to be bias towards the OLED. (Not saying that about yall).
@PoppaCYS3 жыл бұрын
I don't know.... is it truly bias if one technology is demonstrably superior to another with regard to picture quality? OLED's greatest weaknesses are the potential for burn-in and its lack of relative brightness when compared with LEDs. Unless you have a super bright room and need a super bright TV or if you have a fear of burn-in, there's literally no reason to choose an LED over OLED.

That’s the way to do it, I have a A80j I’m my bedroom, and it has perfect blacks and contrast but I often times think I would be happier with the bright punchy colors of the qn90a, the A80j oled has black crush and it is dim. I think I would like the bright punchy image better.

If you plan to game a lot forget about Oled...dont get burned like me. It is unacceptable that Oleds are sold as a gaming option...its a scam...buy an Oled only if you plan to stream movies. If you game as well get a led tv or be rd to retire your oled in a few years. I wish i had known...i wish they had warned me enough...they did not.

What setting did you use? I have 2018 model but turned on all the OLED protection features like pixel shifting, pixel refresh, logo dimming (static elements often found on games), and reduced brightness to 40%, which was perfectly bright enough for my living room. I still don't see any burn-in as of yet. YMMV since yours is 2017 model that might not have the safety features. I can only expect 2021/2022 ones would have more safety features.
