So I am fortunate enough to have both an OLED (LG C4 just got it) and a MiniLED (Sony X95L) TV in my house. I also use reference monitors for CG in my office. So my first thing is if you cannot control ambient light in the room go MiniLED. Even If you can control the light in the room The higher peak brightness of miniLED can really make the image pop in ways OLED can't. I don't feel like one is really better than the other but more that they both have drawbacks. OLED gets you deep blacks and Less blooming since you will always have some blooming due to the optics of your eyes. But you might get black crush and you aren't going to get the brightness of the MiniLED. MiniLED can have trouble with blooming but it is less susceptible to black crush and has a much higher peak brightness. For most people, I honestly think MiniLED is the way to go. Almost all the mastering is done using LCD. OLED reference monitors are really new not to mention they are kind of small and and really dim.

@@KB-kd9pt The point is, watching a movie in sunlight is never a natural situation but an odd one. If you're talking about casual TV watching during daytime with lots of sunlight,Full array or mini led wins in that condition. If you're planning to buy a TV for majorly watching movies, and want a sharper picture, go for OLED. But you need to watch the movie s during evening or night time in a well lit room, no issues. If you want to watch movies during daytime, you need some blinds/ curtains to control the light.

I got S95C and X95L, contrary to what the main poster said, the QD-OLED is far superior in PQ and no issues with lack of brightness. I won't try to justify my purchase of mini led and I think it's bit hyped. I feel it'd equally do, if I purchased full array led X90L (much cheaper).

My Sony A80K streaming apps looked better than any streaming box I took home, Apple4K-Ruko's best unit. Same trying cable-cutting KZbin /Fubo, My Verizon FIOS cable box looks better and has more consistent picture quality and sound. While costing less. My question is when I watch these types of reviews and they show how one OLED or what ever is brighter than the other and I can see it on my Sony A80K which means my TV can reproduce that brightness level. if so I would not be able to see it on my Sony. right? Love the channel. All TVs will look as good as lighting conditions and like all my past TVs they look better with lower nighttime lighting.

Hi Caleb. Just so you know-there’s an ongoing issue with LG G4 TVs involving messed up HDMI ports (particularly the most important HDMI 2 port) where video is scrambled when you switch from an internal TV app to the HDMI 2 port. There’s a 6-page AVS forum thread on it with multiple users reporting the issue, and one user reports his local Best Buy has already processed 17 returns of the G4. LG has yet to even officially address the issue. It’s a real shame as I was just about to buy that TV and all the reviewers love it…

The whole which is better internal apps or AppleTV 4K as an example. That actually depends there has been situations where the DV looked better on internal apps. This is the whole "Player led vs TV led" HDR/DV. With AppleTV it might do the processing and the TV isn't as involved as much. The really important part would be for example Sony XR Clear. Does it work on anything. Meaning anything connected via HDMI or only on internal apps? If it only works on internal apps then it would be better to use them when streaming since you get the extra upscaling and cleaning of low bit rate content. Even 4K streams. I wish someone actually made a proper comparison. Side by side.

I think when we’re comparing MiniLED vs OLED it’s important to also bring overall value into the conversation. I recently picked up a 65” TCL QM8, and I’ve come to enjoy watching movies on it way way more than my LG CX 77”. The peak brightness on QM8 just really makes HDR content have that “wow” factor. Obviously OLED has come a long way since the CX, but I don’t think I could justify the price difference if I was in the market for another TV at this point. I’m nearly completely satisfied with the QM8. (I got my QM8 for around $700)

@@lovelorn88nick I have a LG C1 and it happened 8 months into ownership. I took a break from playing Monster Hunter by watching 90 minutes of Anime while I ate dinner. I went to start gaming and had the widescreen bars on the TV. It lasted at least 12 hours. Because of this, I now get stressed when using the TV longer than 90 minutes. While I know logically, I shouldn't worry about burning... especially since I made sure my warranty would cover burn in, but I'm human, not a robot. That experience makes me feel terrible every time I use the C1. So yeah my next TV will not be a OLED. I much rather have peace of mind than a Superior image quality. At $1500 they’re no contest to C3 or Samsung S90C If you want LED instead of OLED just get the Sony x93L that is at the same price; some would say Hisense is better for gaming as it supports Dolby Vision gaming and stuff, but being real their implementation of VRR is very buggy so I believe most folks would be ok with a proper HDR10 VRR implementation than a glitchy all rounder

I can't even take Live Color off my Sony - it never looks better without it. I know it's not accurate but it looks better so it stays on. It's not like it picks an orange instead of blue, it picks a more vibrant color. And I've watched everything on that TV from Rififi to the Hitchcock Anthology, to every John Ford Movie to a 1,000 series. @@techsamurai11 I'm sorry to hear you get ugly looking PQ when turned to filmmaker mode. I am coming from Samsung S95C perspective and believe me or not, I used to do a lot of tweaking to see which mode I should settle on until I found filmmaker mode to be working best especially for SDR movies. However, I own Sony X95L too and I got it set at Dolby vision mode with reality creation turned on at 80% and live colour medium. I agree, without live colour on, the PQ is awful and reality creation manual setting is must for a sharper grainy picture ( for upscaled videos). When playing DV content, I don't touch the settings as it looks natively good with auto selection of 'Dolby Vision Bright'. One thing that dramatically changes the literally bad/dull PQ to great is to set the Ambient Optimisation Pro/Ambient Light Sensor setting to 'off'. Cuz all the lighting n spring clear day make things Bright n POP. RESULT(Science) HUMAN EYES see MOST comfortable with LOT of COLOR Density, NOT just Black. Mini LED focus on Luminance but they are NOT 1 trick pony, they have advanced SO much to have VERY DENSE color Volume(match QD-OLED) to creat the most vibrant but concrete visual. Those ocean fish tank/Aquarium , the 🐠, I am loooking at right now, its 3D becaue the Dense shade of color, there is NO black on the fish body. The premium LED can creat the visual that suits Human eyes the MOST day time/night both.

I haven’t watched the vid yet, but just from the intro, I can tell you I have had other issues besides basic picture quality with external streaming boxes compared to apps built in to the TV. We are having issues with our Apple TV 4K, where the KZbin app glitches on every single advertisement. The sound and video flash to black multiple times and some of the ad (and then some of the content after the ad) is cut off. It’s so jarring to watch, I’ve switched to the LG WebOS version since most of my watching is on KZbin. We’ve had plenty of other annoyances with the Apple TV recently as well. I love the platform though; I am just waiting for a new version to come out. Hopefully they’ll support 120 Hz refresh rate finally too.
@homebtsea
@homebtsea 3 ай бұрын
Is your Apple TV default video setting showing 4K HDR ( or 4K Dolby Vision)? That can cause the blackout screens on KZbin. Set the default video to 4K SDR and try KZbin again. The blackout screens are caused by the Apple TV converting non HDR signals to HDR. My first gen 4K ATV would do the same thing you described.
@michaelbraaten
@michaelbraaten 2 ай бұрын
@@homebtsea I figured it out shortly after making that comment. I have the Apple TV set for Dolby Vision, but so is my TV… I had the “match content” option checked in the Apple TV, and THAT was what was causing the blackouts.

My wife bought my last TV after watching your videos. It is the Samsung QN75QN90D GREAT TV. You made two outstanding comments. One was most people want a picture that looks good to them. So, they never mess with the settings. The second was if you watch a lot of TV or run your TV a lot a OLED is not for you. Both of these statements are true. My OLED had burned in after 13 months. I watch a lot of TV. I am retired, and my TV is on maybe 16 hours daily.

The Bravia will be brighter and better for daytime and well lit environments, while the oled will be more accurate and better for darker rooms and movie watching. Also, oled quick response makes more sense for gaming. I think that oled can already get bright enough, or will be there eventually. Why bother with anything else? Streaming quality depends on codec and bitrate. Generally I don't think internet streaming will be better than a bluray anytime soon.

You do your audience a massive disservice by refusing to call out the mandatory enabling of spyware. A big reason I have not watched many of your TV reviews in the past year. I am still enjoying my 65in LG E6. The panel still looks great, I enjoyed watching Avatar 2 in 3d at home (haha), but the support of the onboard apps are long gone at this point. I like the idea of buying the latest apple TV, Roku Ultra, or shield to "keep my os up to date" whole still enjoying a viable panel. Seen a U8K and C3 in a 'normal' living room setting, haven't seen a U8N. That said, even with brightness taken into account, there's no contest - the C3 wins hands down; just has the wow factor. The U8K is great, but there's levels to the game here. At the same price point, unless your TV is set up facing directly into the sun for some reason, you'd go with the C3, unless the U8N is a dramatic upgrade.

I'd have to see for myself. The U8k can do everything according to Rtings at a high level. While you get an overall better picture with a C3. You don't have to worry about stutter or brightness levels as much with that LCD. Then if you want to buy a 77 or 85 inch tv you'll save thousands by getting the hisense. Unless the image is really overrated the hisense appears to be a better value.

It's true that OLED isn't the burn in risk it used to be. However, Caleb was just warning that certain users are still at risk if you're watching Fox News or CNN all day with the static logos and crawls 24/7. With my LG C1 65" OLED, I've had it over a year and a half with close to 8000 hours use and don't have any degradation that I've noticed. I also vary my content and when I do pause something for too long, my TV dims itself automatically.

Plasma TVs were also dimmer, but contrast, deep blacks, and overall picture quality was so superior to anything on the market. My Panasonic VT25 is still rocking, in a quest bedroom to be fair, but for the first 8 years was in full use and I never had any issues with it. OLED to me is what plasmas were back in the day. I don’t care for too much brightness, but on these OLEDs, colours pop so much, I really don’t feel they are lacking any brightness (C3/4, G3/4, Bravia 8, Samsung OLED S90C/D I believe). Respect your purchase and don’t treat it like a Walmart Casio watch and it will last you a long time. Buy extended warranty for any lemon purchases and you won’t regret getting that crystal clear picture you get from OLED. Just my 2 cents. And yes, if you are looking to upgrade your 8-10 year old tv, buy a previous year model, it will be a huge improvement over your current tv and you’ll save a lot of money, or get more for your buck, like a bigger screen for the same price new models sell for in smaller screen size. Cheers

It’s simple, get an OLED if your price range allows for it. The top tier LED’s are just as expensive as the OLED’s of the same size so why would you buy an LED TV!? I have top tier TVs of both technologies and OLED in my case now the Samsung QD OLED is my favorite. You can’t go wrong with an LG, Samsung or Sony OLED. Sony is overpriced though. OLED’s are bright enough now to be in any room. Like he said the only reason not to get an OLED is if you leave your TV on for 8 plus hours a day on news channels or anything that has permanent banner which will cause burn in. There’s no need to debate picture quality anymore and not even when comparing the top OLED’s because unless you are staring at each TV side by side and very close up looking for minute differences in brightness and color you will never see those perceived differences in real viewing. We have reached peak TV tech in my opinion and the only thing they can do now is advertise BRIGHTER to get you to upgrade. Rant complete!!

I'll say the following about accuracy - I was watching a scene from Succession from HBO with Logan's face wearing a burgundy turtleneck and some reflections from a door iirc. I switched to Custom. My god. Sure, it looked like my calibrated monitor with the ugly colors and flat look and made a well-shot scene look like I had taped it on a 480p phone. I switched immediately back. If I had to listened to any of the people who use calibrated modes, my TV would have looked like a $200 defective model instead of the gorgeous lush image that literally fights toe-to-toe against my 1,000-nit full APL 4k OLED laptop in every image. And this was an image where Custom has almost no impact - imagine Toy Story or Coco or Life Of Pi. And I always use my light sensor but I think Sony has a very good light sensor or they used to - maybe the new ones are worse or positioned in worse spots. I know people hate to use them on other brands and maybe they are just horrible. I would have gone blind if I didn't use the light sensor on my TV and it would have been the dimmest TV on the planet during the day or the brightest TV at night. I would love to see a Sony (not OLED of course) in a comparison of SDR and HDR with Standard and Warm2 with less color or Warm1 with more color (essentially Warm 1.5). If you compare Jacob+Katie Schwarz's Venice in SDR and HDR, I do wonder whether folks might not necessarily think HDR is vastly superior given the inability of the TV to defeat the brightness to match ambient light conditions.

You ramp up the audio test, and the reciever takes 1.2 seconds to catch up. So if they are talking, it's all quiet, then you hear the rebuttal. Kudos for making a "Studio Apartment" look like a "TV Studio" by using the right lights & cutaways to illustrate your points. Small spaces with the right lighting take time to setup. Studio settings usually can leave lights in place. Viewers should know that when a show goes on location (remote), the crew size increases for the setup & knockdown. If it doesn't increase, you must pay for longer hours at a higher rate. Simple math vs keeping the cost of the "look" for viewers. Sometimes the look is a necessary sacrifice in favor of content. As you said, do you spend $1k+ more for a TV your eyes & ears will not actually see or hear!?

I have just had to return my 48" C3 and the store was not surprised, which to me indicates as to why the C4 has a newer panel tech. As for Hisense vs LG, if you live in a part of the world like the USA the Hisense is fine, but not if you are in the EU / UK where they use their own very buggy Vidaa OS instead of Google, and take it from me Vidaa realy sucks. Best of luck to anyone buying either brand, having returned bad samples of both, i am now waiting until the 2024 models have been tested fully and have a proven reliability record.
