LG showed the G3 OLED with MLA technology dominating the top TVs of 2022, including LG's own G2 OLED. But what does that mean? Could the LG G3 end up being the top TV in 2023 by popular opinion? And what do Hollywood film professionals have to say about using LG's OLED TVs as Sony's BVM mastering monitors start to die off? Here's what we learned during a visit to Hollywood to see LG's G3 OLED in action along with visits to Disney's production studios and one of the top HDR grading studios in the world.

Regarding the burn in on S95B and A95K, 1st gen QD-OLED uses Hydrogen (Protium) while LG’s EVO WOLEDs use Deuterium which is much more stable, the new 2nd Gen QD-OLED now also has Deuterium which along with the other improvements contributes to the 2x longer life vs the 1st gen.

QD-OLED was simply one whole generation ahead of WOLED and this is why LG is now advancing so fast to keep up with Samsung. Also "2x longer life" is a classic marketing phrase. Even 1st gen QD OLED shines next to most other TVs right now.

LG's just desperate that people don't care about woled as much, they literally took one article that wasnt even complete and decided to run with it. Proclaiming their TV is less prone to burn in and trying to go to Hollywood professionals just shows desperation. Hollywood uses expensive mastering monitors which can do 1000 nits full screen with completely accurate colors, they're not gonna switch to a consumer oled that doesen't reach 300 nits full screen and isn't even color accurate high brightness, it's like how Linus said Lg is overclocking their TVs just to compete especially the brightness on their g3 with heatsink but I won't be surprised if this year too it's A95L > G3 and S95c > C3

I was a first adopter of a very expensive plasma screen TV (for the time), with claims of burn-in. That was in 2006…and I WISH it has burn-in, so I can justify getting a new OLED. My plasma TV refuses to die. (My point, burn-in should not be a major concern…not unless, as he said…you watch Fox News, CNN with their logo blazing in the corner, all day. Very unlikely).

But the Sony Oleds with LG panels also had burn-in in that test. It’s not a QD Oled specific issue. The test also didn’t allow for Sonys panel compensation to kick in due to the timing of the on/ off cycles the Rtings chose to use.
@shivamarya5225
@shivamarya5225 Жыл бұрын
Rtings have always been biased. Vinvent and Hdtvtest has always been more thorough with his findings anyway. Rtings won't even rate the A95k higher than G2, they'll never admit Sony had better motion and upscaling and they never will rate a Sony higher than lg, not with A90J, not with A95K
@PantsaBear

@@shivamarya5225 More so than that, RTINGS are interested in quantifying everything into scores, even when the attribute being described is purely subjective. This leads to misunderstandings and bad comparisons According to ratings, the audio quality on my Arctis gaming headset is comparable with the audio on my $900 Focal headphones. Spoilers, it isn't lol, both have their own use case. But nothing on RTINGS denotes this because of them needing to constantly judge everything 1-10. Not everything is that simple That's an audio comparison, but I've found they do this in many sectors on their website including TVs

But you don't get the point at all - as Caleb said unless all day TV low chance of burn it from either . The POINT is ( yes I shouted ) we were bs'd about QD-OLED gen 1 being so much better in this respect - turns out that was a load of crap - tbf think colour volume and brightness sold it - but still would of garnered some sales - Sony and Panasonic in particular on flagship have heat sinks - I have a Panasonic Plasma - no burn in . Anyway great news Gen 2 etc much better - those with old c7 etc will be failing - so good time to upgarde

Love your content dude! I’ll just say this… as a current Sony A80J owner(77”) and prior owner of a C9, no manufacturer on the market is touching Sony’s image processing. LG punches up the reds just a bit to give the user a bit more saturated and colorful picture which is VERY pleasing to look at, but the image is still soft especially depending on the source. Sony favors a natural and extremely clean, crisp picture with their processing tech. Because of this, the details in the image just POP! Every time I play a game or watch a Dolby Vision movie on my A80J, I’m just glued to the picture because of the clarity in the details. Which are most evident and noticeable on a perfect contrast OLED panel. I gave my in-law the C9 I had(she had a LED lol) and when I see that TV in her place the colors are very nice. But I notice that softness in the image every time… My biggest gripe with my Sony is the lack of full HDMI 2.1 across all ports. But it’s a sacrifice I’ll make for the insane PQ I get!

I couldn’t agree more. I just returned the LG G2 for the same size 83” A90J. The Sony’s picture is so deep, so real, so 3D it quite frankly makes the LG look terrible in comparison. It’s like you’re watching different content. Once you get used to a Sony OLED there’s no going back. My two year old Sony OLED was better than the G2 by far. And I messed with every picture setting I could with the G2! The A90J looks as good if not better than being there in real life. Love it & shouldn’t have listened to the sales person!

For me Samsung is no longer in the race - later nerfing their TVs in firmware updates (after release and reviews of course) to increase reliability to reduce replacements, make their latest models look better etc. It reminds me of the scummy tactics of some triple-A game devs later adding predatory monetization or other shady stuff after release and good reviews are out. However LG says it works with an LG Sound bar. I doubt very seriously it can only work with an LG Sound bar. Like how would the HDMI audio signals know what device it is connected too? When you do your TV test I hope you will spend time in your review to talk about the audio feature. What is LG's G3 sustainable full screen brightness? it has to hit 1k nits to be used as dolby vision color monitor.
@zxbc1
@zxbc1 Жыл бұрын
It will likely not reach that, and notice that they did not say the LGs purchased by Disney are being used as production monitors, but rather "part of their workflow", likely as a screener type device for test audiences or end point viewing tests. There's no way the actual editing monitors will use these OLEDs. You need to understand that much of this is hype and marketing, it's LG's way of pre-empting the 2nd gen QD-OLEDs, because on some of those highly marketable buzzword metrics the WOLEDs will likely lose to the QD-OLEDs. Just like Caleb said, this is LG's effort to shift narrative towards how their OLEDs are superior in other areas than purely measurable picture quality, such as value, color accuracy in normal usage scenarios and film production workflows, and burn-in. I agree with Caleb that for most consumers, these are actually also things that matter more, the nits war is kind of dumb and irrelevant all things considered. So LG is doing the right kind of marketing for this year, it's questionable whether consumers are educated enough to buy that.

... here in Europe, we'll not only be able to buy a LG G3, or Samy S95C or Sony A95L ... but also a Panasonic MZ2000, that has the new LG Display MLA panel too, and that was measured, after calibration by Vincent Teoh at more than 1500 nits in Panasonic headquarters in Osaka, and that was a prototype, not already fitted with the new Mediatek Pentonic 1000 SoC ... I know that Panasonic TVs are no longer available in the USA and Canada and Australia ...

All of LGs OLEDs have a white subpixel, and up until now has been relatively dim. MLA is the reason why their new G3 panels are outperforming last gen QD OLED in brightness. We'll see if it can outperform QD OLED brighter blue subpixels giving a brighter picture although I'm assuming LG will slightly take the win.

Currently have a Panasonic plasma so will be looking to buy 3 new screens later in the year, to 55s for my office and maybe a 65 or 77 for the lounge. Eagerly awaiting comparisons between the G3 and S95C to see which way I go although right now the G3 is probably slightly ahead, will be wall mount ready from the box and the pixel layout is better for desktop use than the qd oleds although maybe MS will actually just fix cleartype and support the triangle layout.

It would have been great to have known that the new Sony A95 will use Deuterium, which will contribute to a longer life and possibly less chance of image retention, before I bought my A95K in DECEMBER, only to find out it will likely be OBLITERATED just a few months later by the new 2023 TVs. Not sure why, but I find the word "obliterate" mildly hyperbolic. Other than that, I love your content, and I can't wait for your hands on reviews of the G3, the S95C and the A95L. I find your reviews so helpful!

Burn-in is the one of the reasons I haven't bought an OLED yet, the second being the price of one that would address that issue in any meaningful way. Static elements are so omnipresent, that I'll forget that I'm watching shows/playing games with those elements until I see their ghosts while I'm watching/playing something else. Can't wait for the next quantum leap in TV tech.

My concerns about burn in aren't from watching news channels all day, but rather from watching TV shows and movies with subtitles turned on. I hardly watch news channels, but I do watch a lot of TV and movies and use subtitles for everything since I'm hard of hearing. I really don't want to spend a lot of money for a TV that I will have to replace because of burn in due to subtitles being used a lot.
@MistyKathrine
@MistyKathrine Жыл бұрын
If you're watching subtitles with a streaming service like Netflix, make sure you set your subtitles to be black with white outlines instead of white with black outlines as default. That will greatly reduce the risk of burn-in from subtitles.
@loki76
@loki76 Жыл бұрын
@@MistyKathrine How would that help. It's just and inverse of the black and the white. Making them less bright and more transparent would be a better option and grey and smaller.
@MistyKathrine

@@loki76 Because the individual pixels turn off when black in showed which greatly reduces the wear on those pixels, reducing the risk of image retention.

@loki76
@loki76 Жыл бұрын
@@MistyKathrine But the white outline is "on" and high intensity, you'd just get burn in with those instead. The goal is to reduce it overall, such as dimmer subtitles, smaller foot print, more transparent etc.

You should take a look at latest Classy Tech video about the new way to measure brightness using the new scenes which are closer to movies brightness than typical 10% window, QD-OLED really can keep the brightness much higher than LG oleds. We don't know for sure how MLA will behave until they are tested with these tests, but it doesn't seem too good from his analysis.

Surely the main reason LGs are lasting better is it's the deuterium oled compound - also in this year's Samsung's. Also when they do burn in, it should look less prevalent on qdoled.

How much of what was discussed here will or won't apply to the C3 OLED? That's always been their best value and most popular OLED and the G-series was just a small improvement, usually just in build quality and feature set, but with almost the same picture.

LG needs to sort out the severe dark grey banding and white pink tinting before trashing anybody else. Their MLA at least sorts out the off axis tinting and brightness though. QD-OLED mark 2 will still outperform the G3, so maybe that's why they are so worried?
