The LG G3 with MLA technology is one of the brightest OLED TVs we've ever seen, but the Samsung S95C with QD-OLED technology could best it with color brightness. Both TVs offer exhilarating picture quality, but is one conclusively better than the other. Which OLED TV should you buy? We placed the two side-by-side and agonized over this comparison to provide you with the best possible advice.

Hey everyone. Really sweated this one. Hope I did ok for you and you find this video helpful. Also, I know those of you into gaming will correctly point out that it seems the G3’s game mode picture preset is dimming the image and for you that might sway you, but also the lack of DV support and supposed burn-in risk of the S95C sways a lot of folks as well. As only a casual gamer, I don’t feel like I want to weigh in too heavily on that aspect, so I’m leaving it for other creators to handle. I’ll just say I’ve had a ton of fun playing just about everything but FPS games on both. Thanks again! And keep those comments coming! Love ‘em!

Essentially your review matches the other reviews I've seen. You can't go wrong with either one. I'm curious to see the Sony A95L compared with them. I've seen some reviews where the A95K was comparing favorably against these guys. Now I'm curious if anyone is going to do a review of the 83" G3 since reviews of the other sizes might not be applicable due to it not having MLA.

Caleb, you are right that you need a reference monitor. But, we all know that the QD-OLEDs just have more color volume. And the problem is we have never had a TV with so much color volume. So we are all used to getting less...it's all we know. So when we look at these and think there is too much red, it may just be that it is supposed to be there and we never knew it. The LG looks closer to what we know, and therefore perhaps more "correct" for now.

@@sunshinecycling I considered this possibility, so I tested for it; and it isn’t a color volume factor. The set needs color calibration, even if using Filmmaker Mode, for the reds to display correctly. This is apparent by how reds look in SDR content, where color volume isn’t a factor.

You get extra points for recognizing and being sensitive to the idea that your audience members are not all high tech types. A bunch of us are just looking for the latest really good screen, no matter what they did inside to make it that way. And YES, the Remote IS important! I want to be sure the volume/mute protocol is the standard 'Muted until Volume Up or Mute button is pressed'. I prefer AA batteries, as I think they last longer than AAA.

Having watched numerous TV reviews, I finally narrowed it down to these two. There was only one way to decide and that was to actually see them side by side, well at least they were in the same store here in the UK! I went from one to the other and back again several time and finally bought the 65" LG G3 as the Samsung's colour was too oversaturated for my taste. It was a great deal as the LG S95QR soundbar was half price and the LG stand was free, with free installation! I was not disappointed! The TV is directly facing a bay window and I have not experienced any reflections or glare. The quality and the sound are outstanding! For me, it was the right decision. Now, it's your turn 😁

Good to know that these are so close. With that said, I’ll probably go with the G3 for the 5 year warranty against burn-in. I’m replacing a 5 year old LG B7 with some serious burn-in from firestick icons that started at the 3 year mark, so burn-in is a real concern for me.

This video is an excellent example of why specs on a sheet are not the be all and end all…..it’s what the companies do with those specs that count. Last year I bought a Panasonic LZ2000 (U.K. based). The final two TVs on my list were the Panasonic and the Sony A95K which I was lucky enough to view side by side in a dark room. Although everyone would suggest that spec wise the Sony was the far superior TV, in reality it didn’t turn out that way. In some instances the Sony looked better, and other times, the Panasonic looked better. The bottom line was that the differences were so small but the price premium of the Sony (at the time) was so significant, it turned out to be a no contest…..I went with the Panasonic. I have to say that after owning the TV now for 9 months I love the set more now than the day I bought it….it’s a fantastic TV. What you see with your eyes…counts more than the spec sheet.

The toughest decision I've ever made! The S95C 77" (3,099€) and G3 77" (3,299€) were both on Black Friday sale. Coming from an LG CX 65", this choice had to be just right. Since movies are my main priority and gaming is non-existent, I ultimately went with the LG G3. However, the S95C had me contemplating for a while, especially with its one-connect box. With a 5-year warranty from LG and a fantastic movie picture, I believe the G3 will be the perfect choice for me.

I have a Samsung 65-inch Class QLED Q90T that I got in 2020. It still blows most my friends away. Caleb: how much better are these new TVs in terms of everyday viewing? Back when I bought the Samsung, the brightness over OLEDs in 2020 is what swayed me, but it seems that isn't an issue anymore.

@AllGoodThingsNetwork for one, it has way way less Input lag overall, plus almost zero pixel response time, everything feels much more fluid, its much sharper too, but for me, its the depth of the contrast, with pure blacks and dazzling brights from these newer oleds, it makes the qled tvs look washed out in comparison

This was an excellent review, and they both look amazing, but one thing that I would like to see in all your reviews is how well they upscale a slideshow of photos from a digital camera. Here's why. More often than not, I will crop a photo to get a closeup of the main subject. When I do, the final image is smaller than it started out. I have tested a few TV's to see how the slide show looks. Sony TV's upscale the image to fill the screen without stretching it. Sometimes there will be black bars on the side if the dimensions are more square than rectangle, but the photo will look great and fill the screen as much as possible. Hisense does the same. LG Oled on the other hand displayed the cropped image as a fairly small rectangle in the center of the screen. Upscaling the photo was virtually non-existent. I'm not sure if it could be fixed, but out of the box it's bad. I wanted to try the Samsung, but the local Best Buy wouldn't let me try it because of the way it was mounted on the wall. They couldn't plug in my USB Stick. I currently own an LG Plasma and its upscaling is awful, and based on my limited testing of LG Oled it doesn't seem much better for this application. Sony's upscaling is truly amazing, but I won't decide until I can try a Samsung QD Oled, because they look so good in the store. I'm sure the Sony QD Oled will be just as amazing and I'm also sure the upscaling will be as good as their regular Oled, but I wan't to try the Samsung QD Oled first and hopefully avoid the Sony tax.

After watching many review videos, I see much cleaner motion on the G3 than on the S95c or s90c. Spending this kind of money, I'd hands down take the G3 on motion alone. Brightness is good to a point but these tvs are getting ridiculously bright to a point where it is just overkill. Thanks for the review Caleb. Solid work as usual. Looking forward to your new studio.

Another differentiator that tipped in favor of the S95C for me that I'm surprised no one seems to be mentioning in these reviews is NATIVE Philips Hue integration via an exclusive partnership and app that was rolled out earlier this year for TVs made in the last year or so going forward (including the S95C). No it's not free and the license is non-transferrable, but it can replace their physical (and outdated) HDMI sync box which removes a link in the chain between my devices and does native surround light syncing in a defined entertainment area once paired with a Hue Light Control Bridge. For someone like me heavily invested in their light ecosystem, this was a big win. The separate OneConnect Box too is amazing for cabling and 4K 120Hz VRR Gaming on PS5 is next level. Loving this TV overall; keep up the great work Caleb!

The HDMI sync makes a world of difference in TV immersion imo, and getting that without the current constraints of the separate Sync Box (no HDMI 2.1 output, no video mode switching based on HDMI input) would be perfect.

We’ve always had very good luck with Samsung, so we bought the Samsung S95C in 65” as that was the largest I could reasonably fit in our TV snug that has a nice fireplace and is a very comfortable room. We’ve had super bad luck with some LG products and repairmen did too, so we’ve tended to view LG with a jaundice eye. We added the top soundbar configuration in 7.1 as the room (16’X 22’) is just too small for 11.1, IMO. It will be delivered today and setup tonight. Admittedly, I’m not yet too old (80) to be excited! Thanks Caleb! Much appreciated.

If software support matters, my understanding is that LG has already pushed out an update to improve/fix the ABL performance and also created one for the G2/C2 models. That's encouraging and seems to be contrasted by last year's update by Samsung that reportedly lowered their brightness. And yet ratings says that the G3 is (slightly) less prone to burn in. A television this expensive should last you a while, and a 5 yr warranty says LG is confident rhat the G3 will.

Hi Caleb, thank you for this excellent comparison. I’m rewatching this video among others, while I’m deciding to buy a new television. I went to see these 2 plus Panasonic MZ2000 at one of the most celebrated retailers in London UK. Apart from the abysmal way those showrooms are set (harsh spotlights pointed at the screens anyone?), this is my personal takeaway. The LG G3 luminance micro stutter is too annoying for me, in particular paired with the greenish tint of the white/all colours. The S95C comes across natural and analog by comparison. The MZ2000, didn’t exhibit micro stutter but the spot lights were so dead on the screen that I could appreciate the colour temperature. Rewatching this video has been so useful. Thank you again.

I ended up getting the G3, before most of the S95C reviews came in. I was getting the sense these are going to be neck-and-neck and I'm glad I wasn't wrong. I was always going to hang the TV, and it didn't make sense to get one for which I'd have to buy a bracket, when the G3 already came with one. I have heard criticism about the sound quality, Mine is connected to Sonos Arc, 2 Era 300’s and Gen 2 Sub, so can’t really comment. To summarise I would think this TV would be ideal in a bright room, looks amazing on the flush wall mount. I wouldn’t even complain and just stick with that. It’s like trying to split hairs pointing out the differences between them and for that I’m grateful for the variety. You’re not missing out on anything, regardless of which one you pick

Hi Caleb, awesome comparison as always. Can you explain one thing please, I've got an A80K which is great but struggles with motion badly. It's either a case of motion stutter or heavy artifacts when you increase motion smoothing. I had a QN90B previously which was brilliant but died after 4 months. How does the S95C handle motion compared to the A80K ? It is a very important issue for me as I vowed to never buy and OLED again and go back to a mini led. Is it purely a case of oled technology will always struggle with motion or are we there now where it is as good as mini led motion handling ? I've only got one chance to swap out my A80k for something else. Most of what I watch is bluray and 4k dvds. If you can help me out that would be great. Cheers, John

Good stuff, Caleb! The whole Dolby Vision stubbornness from Samsung was my big concern with the S95C. But if a TV reviewer doesn't see enough of a difference to make the lack of that feature a deal breaker, then I will absolutely not notice. Before this video, the race for me was between the G3 and A95L. But you just put S95C back on the board. Now we just wait for the fashionably late Sony, to make that final buying decision.

This is the argument I've been trying to make for quite some time with DV. Glad to see more influencers on YT spreading the word that DV's usefulness is HIGHLY dependent upon the type of TV that it's going into. It certainly isn't the must-have feature that so many people have convinced themselves it is.
@mattgengel2800
@mattgengel2800 Жыл бұрын
Finally! DV essentially is "dumbing down" the image into something your TV can handle. That's why it always looked so good on the old LG OLEDs that had a peak brightness of 500 nits. Anything above that was blown out in HDR10. So obviously DV looks way better. But the better the TV gets, the less of an effect DV has. And it seems like we're finally getting to that point

Still don’t care, Dolby Vision gaming looks different than HDR10 gaming because it implements DTM from the console level when gaming with an Xbox. No Dolby Vision, no buy. Sammy needs to bite the bullet and support it, because there are many people who want QD-OLED that supports not just Dolby Vision, but also HDR10+.
@JohnSmith-ro8hk

So much ignorance in these comments. DV is superior in every way to standard HDR due to its specs. You, and samsung, are betting that content creators will continue to put out garbage implementations of DV in the future, allowing you to ignore it. I argue you are going to lose this bet, as more recent content has shown, but you do you.

Hi Caleb, as always, I truly appreciate what you do in evaluating televisions because you share such rich information about them and it really helps us to make a decision when purchasing. I recently went tv shopping with my sister who is totally not into watching any kind of content about which tv does what but, when we left the store she was amazed at how much I knew and could ask the salesman about when it came to the features of each particular brand. That's because of you! So, I know this video was a comparison between the LG G3 and Sony S95C but I recently purchased the LG C2 and I have what I hope is a simple question. How do I know if the content I'm watching is actually being displayed in the format it was created in? For instance, if the program was filmed in Dolby Vision, how do I know if I am watching in that setting on the tv? Sorry if this sounds really elementary to you. Thanks for you help.

I'm trying to build the best home theater in my less than ideal living room (high ceilings, weird angles) and would love your advice on the following if possible please! I got in on the World Premiere Edition of the Nakamichi Dragon, so that should be sufficient for audio lol. Thanks to you and Ealan Osborne for the great review to push me over the edge! I'm seriously considering jumping into the Kaleidescape world as well, gotta feed the Dragon ya know? My question for you is since Kaleidescape doesn't support Dolby Vision, which of this year's big 3 would make the most sense for a 77" model? What would the mighty Caleb Dennison connect to the Kaleidescape and Dragon (Audioquest Vodka for all connections). The S95C, LG G3, or A95L? Thank you in advance!

I think I would pay even slightly more for the LG just to have some reassurance that the TV will last longer. That Sony is really positioning itself well for people who want the most options. G3 not having a stand is not a complete deal breaker but it is inconvenient to the point that I would buy Samsung or Sony just because I have lath and plaster walls. I love my LG CX but that G3 stand is an afterthought and makes the company look pretty bad, it's not something people spending that level on a tv should be getting from the manufacturer and especially not with a price attached. I'm going to have so make a trip into my local bestbuy to see if I can hear the new Samsung soundbar surround setup with the new tv. I have a feeling those transducers, and the time and money spent on r&d, make a big difference in center channel presence for their surround.

What was my deciding factor, something as simple as where I'm going to put my TV. I'm not hanging it, but putting it on a stand. S95C comes with one, and G3 doesn't. With them being about the same price, PLUS having to buy a stand for the G3, was the choice for me. Plus, I already have a Samsung TV with a 1 Connect box, so changing over to a new one will be easy. (1) I need an 83” or larger for a basement movie/media room. (2) I need a 77” for a family room over a linear fireplace that is 65.5” wide… most 77” TV’s are 66-67” wide. The fireplace has 65000 btu but its heat is released out of vents above the TV, so it’s completely safe to place the TV above. Finally I need a TV for a master bedroom “sitting room” a 11x15 space with a linear electric fireplace and a deep comfortable transitional sectional. (I build luxury homes for a living). Dolby Vision is different from TV to TV. It is trying to help your tv show the best image it can. So lesser quality tvs get a giant boost from DV. But the better the tv gets the less of an effect DV has. So if you loved DV on an older tv.. that does not mean DV is going to be the same.. or even make a difference on these newer tvs. There is a clear misunderstanding of what DV actually does. And if DV is a deal breaker for you then you dont really understand how it works.

I think it would be beneficial doing a video comparing DV to HDR. I know Vincent did a video a while ago and came to the solution that DV mainly helps out lower end TV's and at the premium high end they're essentially similar. It would be interesting to see if the consensus has changed at all over the years. For example, I know for example a lot of people make a big deal about Dolby vision gaming modes for Xbox series x but analysis has proven that almost all of the dolby vision implementations in games is flawed compared to the HDR10 implementation where I'm really starting to think that the importance of DV is really more mind share than actual practical use.

DV pops so much better than regular HDR. HDR10+ is even better than DV imho but content varies; meaning DV can outshine 10+ at times, so I want to experience DV more often myself since I've enjoyed 10+ so much already and will be waiting on the Sony A95L.
@darksparda4
@darksparda4 Жыл бұрын
@@justinsugay1149 see idk. Ive never seen HDR10+ but on my A80J there's very little difference between DV and HDR10, maybe DV is 2-5% better? But it doesn't feel like it should have remotely as much importance placed on it as it currently does. To me, a lot of the no DV = deal breaker is confirmation bias. People are told DV is radically better than HDR10 and has all of these benefits, if you have a DV tv most streaming services don't offer the option to switch to HDR10, if your tv doesn't have DV then you're not gonna see it anyway.
@justinsugay1149
@justinsugay1149 Жыл бұрын
@@darksparda4 I would agree that DV is clearly better but I wouldn't say radically better. That nuance is important. For the most part I agree. DV isn't a deal breaker nor should it be for most. If you're willing to spend the difference and can appreciate it then perhaps it's worth it to that individual but you said it best I believe in reference to the confirmation bias. Best

Will be going the samsung route, the one connect box is really good if you want a clean seetup. Doubt anyone can notice the lack of dolby vision vs no dolby vision content. While they both boast high nits, they still cant beat QLED (LCD).

Great video! It would be good to point out that the G3 has that 5-yr panel warranty which is the leading manufacturer warranty in the industry right now. Also, the One-Connect box may be a deal breaker for people who have their receivers, streamers, and 4K players significantly far from where the TV is mounted. Sure the Samsung comes with a longer cable as well but it’s only 2.5 meters (8 ft). Plenty of set-ups would need a much longer cable and that One-Connect cable is more difficult to fish through a wall with its thickness and two large connecting ends. And with power running through it is it even in-wall rated for local building codes?

I'm still uncertain here. It appears to me that the 5-yr panel warranty on the G3 is exclusive to USA only. Is this correct?

I agree about the annoyance of the OC cable length. I've had OC enabled tv's for the last several years and it was great when they offered 30 - 50' cables. Being limited to 8 feet sucks and has forced me to resort to fiber optic HDMI cables. Also no, the OC cable cannot be run inside the wall, at least not within the bounds of the NEC. Flexible power cables inside the wall is no bueno in the US.

I really wanna get the S95C 77 next year when prices drop, Have a 75 QN90A - as I'm investing into a Samsung Soundbar HWQ930C and the Q symphony feature - that's sometin to consider as well! the S95C imho price tag right now isn't worth it over the QN90A that still wows me. Great Review!

Regarding burn-in, Rtings doesn't have longevity data published _yet_ for the S95C, which has the second-gen QD-OLED that Samsung Display claims is twice as durable as last year's. LG, on the other hand, stands by the G1, G2, and G3 with a 5 year panel warranty and a record proven through the G1/G2 having been winners in Rtings' test thus far.

I think you summed this up well. Anyone would almost certainly be totally happy with either one. Personally I'd go with the lg, but just barely, during summer my living room is pretty bright until about 11 am, so any weekend morning watching is a little washed out, and I'm a little irked with Samsung's recent anti consumer behaviour. But if the lg wasn't available I'd still be more than happy with the Samsung and get over my feelings about it lol
