Hey everyone. Really sweated this one. Hope I did ok for you and you find this video helpful. Also, I know those of you into gaming will correctly point out that it seems the G3’s game mode picture preset is dimming the image and for you that might sway you, but also the lack of DV support and supposed burn-in risk of the S95C sways a lot of folks as well. As only a casual gamer, I don’t feel like I want to weigh in too heavily on that aspect, so I’m leaving it for other creators to handle. I’ll just say I’ve had a ton of fun playing just about everything but FPS games on both. Thanks again! And keep those comments coming! Love ‘em!

Essentially your review matches the other reviews I've seen. You can't go wrong with either one. I'm curious to see the Sony A95L compared with them. I've seen some reviews where the A95K was comparing favorably against these guys. Now I'm curious if anyone is going to do a review of the 83" G3 since reviews of the other sizes might not be applicable due to it not having MLA.

Caleb, you are right that you need a reference monitor. But, we all know that the QD-OLEDs just have more color volume. And the problem is we have never had a TV with so much color volume. So we are all used to getting less...it's all we know. So when we look at these and think there is too much red, it may just be that it is supposed to be there and we never knew it. The LG looks closer to what we know, and therefore perhaps more "correct" for now.

The toughest decision I've ever made! The S95C 77" (3,099€) and G3 77" (3,299€) were both on Black Friday sale. Coming from an LG CX 65", this choice had to be just right. Since movies are my main priority and gaming is non-existent, I ultimately went with the LG G3. However, the S95C had me contemplating for a while, especially with its one-connect box. With a 5-year warranty from LG and a fantastic movie picture, I believe the G3 will be the perfect choice for me.

If software support matters, my understanding is that LG has already pushed out an update to improve/fix the ABL performance and also created one for the G2/C2 models. That's encouraging and seems to be contrasted by last year's update by Samsung that reportedly lowered their brightness. And yet ratings says that the G3 is (slightly) less prone to burn in. This video is an excellent example of why specs on a sheet are not the be all and end all…..it’s what the companies do with those specs that count. Last year I bought a Panasonic LZ2000 (U.K. based). The final two TVs on my list were the Panasonic and the Sony A95K which I was lucky enough to view side by side in a dark room. Although everyone would suggest that spec wise the Sony was the far superior TV, in reality it didn’t turn out that way. In some instances the Sony looked better, and other times, the Panasonic looked better. The bottom line was that the differences were so small but the price premium of the Sony (at the time) was so significant, it turned out to be a no contest…..I went with the Panasonic. I have to say that after owning the TV now for 9 months I love the set more now than the day I bought it….it’s a fantastic TV. What you see with your eyes…counts more than the spec sheet.

I think I would pay even slightly more for the LG just to have some reassurance that the TV will last longer. Another differentiator that tipped in favor of the S95C for me that I'm surprised no one seems to be mentioning in these reviews is NATIVE Philips Hue integration via an exclusive partnership and app that was rolled out earlier this year for TVs made in the last year or so going forward (including the S95C). No it's not free and the license is non-transferrable, but it can replace their physical (and outdated) HDMI sync box which removes a link in the chain between my devices and does native surround light syncing in a defined entertainment area once paired with a Hue Light Control Bridge. For someone like me heavily invested in their light ecosystem, this was a big win. The separate OneConnect Box too is amazing for cabling and 4K 120Hz VRR Gaming on PS5 is next level. I thought the reason Dolby Vision support is a big deal is because most HDR content only supports one standard or the other, so you're just able to see more stuff in HDR if you support all the standards. Not because of one standard being drastically better than the other.

tvs that don’t support dv will fallback to hdr10 when playing dv content. still hdr, but without dynamic metadata. the better the tv the less that even matters.
@absolutium Жыл бұрын
Everything supports HDR10.. DV has a mandatory HDR10 compatibility.. Essentially if your TV is capable of 1000nits (like S95c).. you are good to go. Everything in HDR is going to look as good as it should regardless of the Codec.
@mattgengel2800 Жыл бұрын
Dolby Vision is different from TV to TV. It is trying to help your tv show the best image it can. So lesser quality tvs get a giant boost from DV. But the better the tv gets the less of an effect DV has. So if you loved DV on an older tv.. that does not mean DV is going to be the same.. or even make a difference on these newer tvs. There is a clear misunderstanding of what DV actually does. And if DV is a deal breaker for you then you dont really understand how it works.

The fireplace has 65000 btu but its heat is released out of vents above the TV, so it’s completely safe to place the TV above. Finally I need a TV for a master bedroom “sitting room” a 11x15 space with a linear electric fireplace and a deep comfortable transitional sectional. (I build luxury homes for a living). It’s a very difficult decision. I think… these two TV’s may be the price point.

Good stuff, Caleb! The whole Dolby Vision stubbornness from Samsung was my big concern with the S95C. But if a TV reviewer doesn't see enough of a difference to make the lack of that feature a deal breaker, then I will absolutely not notice. Before this video, the race for me was between the G3 and A95L. But you just put S95C back on the board. Now we just wait for the fashionably late Sony, to make that final buying decision.

This is the argument I've been trying to make for quite some time with DV. Glad to see more influencers on YT spreading the word that DV's usefulness is HIGHLY dependent upon the type of TV that it's going into. It certainly isn't the must-have feature that so many people have convinced themselves it is.
@mattgengel2800 Жыл бұрын
Finally! DV essentially is "dumbing down" the image into something your TV can handle. That's why it always looked so good on the old LG OLEDs that had a peak brightness of 500 nits. Anything above that was blown out in HDR10. So obviously DV looks way better. But the better the TV gets, the less of an effect DV has. And it seems like we're finally getting to that point

This was an excellent review, and they both look amazing, but one thing that I would like to see in all your reviews is how well they upscale a slideshow of photos from a digital camera. Here's why. More often than not, I will crop a photo to get a closeup of the main subject. When I do, the final image is smaller than it started out. I have tested a few TV's to see how the slide show looks. Sony TV's upscale the image to fill the screen without stretching it. Sometimes there will be black bars on the side if the dimensions are more square than rectangle, but the photo will look great and fill the screen as much as possible. Hisense does the same. LG Oled on the other hand displayed the cropped image as a fairly small rectangle in the center of the screen. Upscaling the photo was virtually non-existent. I'm not sure if it could be fixed, but out of the box it's bad. I wanted to try the Samsung, but the local Best Buy wouldn't let me try it because of the way it was mounted on the wall. They couldn't plug in my USB Stick. I currently own an LG Plasma and its upscaling is awful, and based on my limited testing of LG Oled it doesn't seem much better for this application. Sony's upscaling is truly amazing, but I won't decide until I can try a Samsung QD Oled, because they look so good in the store. I'm sure the Sony QD Oled will be just as amazing and I'm also sure the upscaling will be as good as their regular Oled, but I wan't to try the Samsung QD Oled first and hopefully avoid the Sony tax.

I have a LG C9 and im defiently upgrading this year. I like LG, my C9 is still going strong, no problems whatsoever! I want Dolby Vision, and the 5 year pannel warranty on the G3 is awesome!!! To me Samsung build quality is a little iffy, no D.V. and their terrible firmware updates, and that QD-Oled is only on its second generation (realibility is still a real question), all that and the G3 is a easy choice for me. If I would entertain a QD-OLED (and I still am) I would buy the Sony A-95L. Big thing of course is the superb Sony processing, the negative of course the Sony tax😢. Im waiting to see both tvs many times at my local Best Buy before i buy around Black Friday. All three are great tvs it all comes down to personal preference. Good luck everyone!!!

@alexseto2084 Жыл бұрын
@AllGoodThingsNetwork for one, it has way way less Input lag overall, plus almost zero pixel response time, everything feels much more fluid, its much sharper too, but for me, its the depth of the contrast, with pure blacks and dazzling brights from these newer oleds, it makes the qled tvs look washed out in comparison

Buy the Samsung. As an owner of an LG CX, I recommended the Samsung S95B to family, and it was the right call. For three reasons which also apply here. 1) Screen reflectivity. The samsung is just waayyy less reflective in daylight. I end up not really watching movies on my LG when the sun's up. The S95B at my family's place is just so much better when the sun is up. 2) Samsung supports exFAT external drives (which works across PC, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, basically everywhere except on an LG TV). LG still doesn't support exFAT. If you want to play video files bigger than 4GB on an LG, NTFS is your only option. So if you use a Mac or Android at all, don't buy an LG unless you enjoy complicating your life. I have to keep a separate drive just to use between my PC and LG TV. A drive that won't work with android, and is read only on Mac. Ugh.. 3) When watching HDR content, Samsung let's you adjust the Gamma. On the LG, you can only adjust gamma on SDR content. So if you've got black crush on HDR content on the LG, you have no choice but to just increase brightness, which elevates everything and dark scenes have to be grey just so you can see the details in the dark.

For me a sum up of which of these tvs you should get are the following. Just tyrna help people out 1. If you mostly watch tv & non-hdr content then Ill get the G3 cause of higher white brightness, better low bit rate content, & higher sport brightness 2. If you mostly watch hdr movies & tv shows then either tv will be great for you but the minor differences might help decide for you. LG advantages: slightly brighter in white scenes Samsung advantages: slightly brighter color luminance * during scenes where white & vibrant colors are mix, both tvs are very identical so keep that in mind 3. If gaming what you do the most then the S95C would be the tv I'll get cause of the following • Higher game mode brightness *LG remove game mode brightness boost cause It'll add input lag. • Better color luminance • 144hz support • Has game motion plus. Lg does not I hope this help makes your decision. Overall theres not a single area where there is a "BIG" difference between the two tvs. If you made it hear, thanks for reading my comment

That Sony is really positioning itself well for people who want the most options. G3 not having a stand is not a complete deal breaker but it is inconvenient to the point that I would buy Samsung or Sony just because I have lath and plaster walls. I love my LG CX but that G3 stand is an afterthought and makes the company look pretty bad, it's not something people spending that level on a tv should be getting from the manufacturer and especially not with a price attached. I'm going to have so make a trip into my local bestbuy to see if I can hear the new Samsung soundbar surround setup with the new tv. You haven't looked at classy tech video in sdr gaming , g3 and s95c are super close. Most movies are made in the p3 colour space and hardly anything in rec 2020, so they are both near a 100% in P3 colour space. Most reviewers say it is not a colour volume difference but a colour lumance difference. Both are amazing tv's . A95L FTW
@StevoHDA Жыл бұрын
not sure where you heard its flat and in particular dim on the lg, i doubt lg is muting colors especially since they have more than enough lumination for colors in sdr, every oled has since 2017. It's just a matter of lower delta e's for sdr at this point. Hdr on the other hand is where manufacturers differ, who's misleading us on what and how much is hard to decipher regarding eotf and accuracy along that eotf. The s95c still doesn't have hgig as well as the option for dolby vision (if the content was actually mastered correctly). It also still doesn't have a polarizer so in your bright living room, those blacks... aren't black.. even when off. The lg just does a plain better job overall vs the s95c and especially the s95b, combined with that polariser to keep the blacks black and its almost not a competition in a bright living room. The motion stutter caleb was talking about on the lg though, I believe thats because in the first half of a pixel transition, it changes really fast, then in the second half its rate decreases significantly. I noticed an improvement in motion clarity going from woled to qd at lower frame rates. Woled also just plain better at near black, either less black crush or more accurate gamma, coz qd pixels transitions are a lot slower down low for gaming, so the solution proposed like changing gamma down there have those side effects.

My inflexibility WRT Dolby Vision support isn't that it's clearly superior to HDR10+; arguably it's worse because HDR10+ is an open standard. Heck, the difference between Dolby Vision and HDR10 (not-plus) might be more subtle than I think it is. The issue is that most 4K Blu-rays use Dolby Vision or HDR10 for HDR video, and HDR10+ 4K Blu-rays are not common. The fact that a flagship TV meant for home theaters and media enthusiasts doesn't support Dolby Vision, the most common dynamic HDR format for enthusiast home video, is embarrassing. I'm not singling out Samsung either: LG should support HDR10+, and it's only slightly less stupid that it doesn't. I also thought the lack of DTS support on pre-G3 LG televisions was idiotic considering DTS was the most common Blu-ray audio standard, but at least you could solve that issue with a home theater receiver.

Great video! It would be good to point out that the G3 has that 5-yr panel warranty which is the leading manufacturer warranty in the industry right now. Also, the One-Connect box may be a deal breaker for people who have their receivers, streamers, and 4K players significantly far from where the TV is mounted. Sure the Samsung comes with a longer cable as well but it’s only 2.5 meters (8 ft). Plenty of set-ups would need a much longer cable and that One-Connect cable is more difficult to fish through a wall with its thickness and two large connecting ends. And with power running through it is it even in-wall rated for local building codes?

For me I think the 5 year panel warranty swings it. Especially with static elements on screen from game UIs.

Some people say Dolby Vision isn't that Important, but I think most consumers that are used to it appreciate the difference between DV and HDR10. It's a really noticeable step up from HDR10 to me. Except from a few poor offerings (Pirates of th Caribbean comes to mind), most content really benefits from it. I couldn't imagine giving up a feature I enjoy the next time I upgrade. You want to gain features, not lose them.

Samsung has HDR10+ which I've only found used in the Amazon Prime app; it's way better than HDR10 too. DV does stand out from regular HDR for sure. Some say HDR10+ is actually even better than DV. So keep that in mind but I hear you. I'm leaning to upgrade my QLED QN90A to the Sonly A95L when it comes out depending on the reviews, specs, etc. and am looking forward to seeing for myself how much better DV is. For those who haven't experienced it they don't know what they are missing but I can say the same for HDR10+ but I believe DV support would be able to match if not exceed at times depending on the content.

Stop the FOMO compared the two extensively with a lot of equipment and he himself said that the difference is barely noticeable and preferred both tv’s in different situations.

@@justinsugay1149 My TV is an OLED that supports DV and HDR10+. Wouldn't really want to give up either but even Amazon have started to support DV instead of HDR10+ so it's basically a dead format now. I can vouch for the quality though.

LG G3, better panel warranty, more of a proven technology, burn-in safeguards in place. Samsung, new exciting tech, also unproven. Will have growing pains for the next few years. I prefer the LG, imo, they have a more balanced approach where Sony emphasizes accuracy (almost to its detriment) and Samsung pushes color "pop." LG seems to straddle the line between both.

Their panels are dirty this year unfortunately. Always a toss up for WRGB nowadays
@alanbuck9237 Жыл бұрын
If you want a little bit more intense color on the G3, why don’t you just turn the color up a couple of clicks. I’m sure that would make them look much closer to each other.

I actually bought the LG G2 after your review of it last year. Originally had gotten the S95B, but first one came with 20 rows of dead pixels, second one was completely destroyed out of the box. G2? I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s stunning. Have no issues with dimming in game mode either. It’s awesome. And if you’re mounting it on the wall, it’s actually super easy to do, and I did it myself with no problems at all. I don’t think I’ll upgrade until my G2 is completely dead. It’s plenty bright, looks stunning, has every feature I could ever ask for. Only thing about Both TVs I hate is the software, I’m now religiously using AppleTV 4K on all TVs. Great video comparison! Way to do it as thoroughly as you did.
@DJ_CJ_NL Жыл бұрын
that is such a typical samsung story, their quality control just isn't good enough! it's kind of a hit and miss when you buy a tv of them and at this price point, stuff like that just cannot happen!
@gavriushka Жыл бұрын
@@DJ_CJ_NL unfortunately yes. I’ve had a lot of issues with their devices recently, especially after the pandemic started. It seemed like they shut down QC altogether. So I’m not buying anything from that brand anymore. I tend to go with LG, Apple and some other brands, depending on what I’m looking for. So far, LG has been great for me.

The LG G3's colours are more natural. The Samsing's colours are more yellowish and reddish. I prefer the LG G3, which also offers a slightly sharper, more detailed image.

I think it would be beneficial doing a video comparing DV to HDR. I know Vincent did a video a while ago and came to the solution that DV mainly helps out lower end TV's and at the premium high end they're essentially similar. It would be interesting to see if the consensus has changed at all over the years. For example, I know for example a lot of people make a big deal about Dolby vision gaming modes for Xbox series x but analysis has proven that almost all of the dolby vision implementations in games is flawed compared to the HDR10 implementation where I'm really starting to think that the importance of DV is really more mind share than actual practical use.
@justinsugay1149 Жыл бұрын
DV pops so much better than regular HDR. HDR10+ is even better than DV imho but content varies; meaning DV can outshine 10+ at times, so I want to experience DV more often myself since I've enjoyed 10+ so much already and will be waiting on the Sony A95L.
@darksparda4 Жыл бұрын
@@justinsugay1149 see idk. Ive never seen HDR10+ but on my A80J there's very little difference between DV and HDR10, maybe DV is 2-5% better? But it doesn't feel like it should have remotely as much importance placed on it as it currently does. To me, a lot of the no DV = deal breaker is confirmation bias. People are told DV is radically better than HDR10 and has all of these benefits, if you have a DV tv most streaming services don't offer the option to switch to HDR10, if your tv doesn't have DV then you're not gonna see it anyway.
@justinsugay1149 Жыл бұрын
@@darksparda4 I would agree that DV is clearly better but I wouldn't say radically better. That nuance is important. For the most part I agree. DV isn't a deal breaker nor should it be for most. If you're willing to spend the difference and can appreciate it then perhaps it's worth it to that individual but you said it best I believe in reference to the confirmation bias. Best

I have been watch many of your informative videos trying to decide which 65" TV to upgrade to. I was all set to go with the Samsung C90D but then saw reviews that it has a poor Low quality content smoothing rating. This is important because we watch a lot of older programs and movies on the TCM channel. What are your thoughts other TV's we might consider that would have a better low quality content rating for SDR viewing? Thanks, your videos are a tremendous asset for people looking to learn about the new TV technologies

Picking between these 2 tvs is really challenging, but I would lean towards the Samsung s95c even if some colour's are a bit to much, you can tone down the colors until your happy and as for hrd and dolby vision, the difference in quality are so small that I can't even tell.

I don’t care either way, but hdr10+ is on all of paramount plus, Hulu, Apple tv(all movies but sony) and original shows and Amazon prime… so that’s a decent selection
