I too went from a Pioneer plash to an LG OLED. I thought I would be hard pressed to find a quality replacement for the plasma but the OLED blew me away. It really is fantastic in all formats but especially in 4k.
@WhatTheFragrance6 жыл бұрын
Todd Lampone what about the motion?
@TL-ds8ux6 жыл бұрын
I have found it to be pretty spectacular in all situations. Low resolution obviously looks poor. Not so much because of the inherent limitations but because of the larger screen and just how good 1080p+ looks. I tried the Tru Motion change Lon suggested and didn't really notice a difference from what it was set to originally but that could be because of the content. As he mentioned the biggest benefit is that OLEDs are independent and requires no back light panel and blacks are dead black which makes the gigantic difference especially when you are in a dark room.

Hey Lon, I have last year's model. There's a specific "Game Mode" in the Picture settings where you found the TruMotion option that turns off additional post-processing that the LG display does, helping to reduce the input latency even further. I had to muck around with mine for quite a bit to get it looking right. I play a lot of fast-action, twitchy games (classic arcade and TurboGrafx-16 shoot-em-ups, for example) and this was the first non-CRT display I found where I could play those games again! I built a new HTPC to pair with this so let me share a little wisdom: when Windows 10 goes into 4K, it will enable its HiDPI scaling (at 150%, I believe). This is great for reading the text, but confuses most games; you'll get a completely black screen or you'll see the top-left corner of the game screen because its being wildly overscaled! Once you have things set up as you like them, turn the display scaling all the way back down to 100% and everything should "just work".

With a recent update the B7A now supports Dolby Atmos, but unless you want to spend major money on a soundbar that support it, it doesn’t matter. A great soundbar is better than most tv speakers anyways. So my advice, get the B7A and with the $200 saved get a nice soundbar 👍

I have an atmos system but when testing the tv with a 4k film from Netflix I didn't have it on. The sound was so good from TV I just left it on and watched the whole film. Of course the Atmos would have been better but if you don't have one, the TV sound is just awesome.

Great review! Hey Lon, you should really invest in an input lag tester(~$100) because your iPhone technique isn't all that accurate, especially given that you don't have a precise way of detecting when the button press actually registered on the controller. The LG C7 line has ~21.5ms of input lag in game mode.

Most sites have the input lag measured at 20-21 ms. Though all I can say is I tested it with NES games through an emulation PC and it was super responsive. I practiced and beat Mike Tyson in punchout, second round tko several times in game mode. Couldnt do it in the other modes, so make sure game mode is on. I also played Ninja Gaiden Black at a high level on Xbox and tested that. There is really only ONE issue that annoys me with the display. It is amazing and better picture than anything out there, but there are faint vertical bands in all of these sets as far as I understand. The severity comes down to panel lottery. All tvs have these types of quirks but this is one that can really annoy me sometimes as I see it often with gaming. I play alot of old and new games but older games have less business on the screen so its easier to see with those especially.
@MRrwmac6 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is an excellent TV, movie player and game screen! Sounds like you are e very happy with it! You mentioned several times how well it does at upgrading some of the older content resolution. @LonSeidman6 жыл бұрын
It should do ok - I might hook my VCR up and take a look. But just remember that VHS is the equivalent of 360p on KZbin, very little resolution going in so it won't look spectacular on a 4k set like this.

Thanks for your consumer review! I myself have owned this TV set for almost two months now. Overall, I love it. However, I have noticed a few issues that I believe is quite common amongst LG OLED TV panels (which are present in all other OLEDs from others brands as well). The first issue, which doesn't bother me as much, is somewhat of a yellow tint on the left side of the panel when a white background is present. The other, which is more of an issue for me, is vertical banding. I see from forums that some barely have any of this vertical banding, with others having a quite serious banding issue. I was curious to know if you were able to notice any of this vertical banding on your set? This usually shows up in panning shots over a clear blue sky or when a relatively dark scene is playing with some greys all over the screen. Thanks!

For games be sure to set the HDR dynamic contrast range to low, LG optimized their tone mapping in such a way that it can make HDR games look too dark, setting that value to low will put it back to the way before LG changed it.

The Dolby Vision spec does support up to 12 bit colour depth (and content is mastered in 12 bit) but no retail TV, including this one, supports any more than 10 bit. Dolby do claim that 12 bit mastered Dolby Vision content down-sampled to 10 bit is still better than HDR10, but you'd expect them to.

Seems like this has some of the shortcomings of LED. Soap opera effect, jaggedness, motion blur etc etc. Help me understand. The reason for most of these issues is If it’s converting from a refresh rate of 24hz to 60hz as you say. Yet plasma has a refresh rate of 600hz I believe and exhibits none of these problems. Doesn’t plasma convert 24hz to 600hz. I have 3 plasmas and 2 lcds so I do notice a difference btw
@aesircorporation19246 жыл бұрын
FIrst off, the soap opera effect is optional on this set. There's an option to disable it. Regarding jaggedness (or "judder" as I would call it) on plasmas - my Panasonic Viera from 2008 has judder. In fact, I think all plasmas have judder to varying degrees. Now you mentioned the 600hz refresh rate -- well www.cnet.com/news/what-is-600hz/ says that's essentially a marketing term. That is, there is a 600hz refresh rate that produces an effective 60hz refresh rate. EDIT: An even better explanation of the 600hz marketing term - www.lifewire.com/what-is-a-sub-field-drive-1847853.
@voidtoast48806 жыл бұрын
Those aren't shortcomings of LED/LCD those are post processing effects how well those are done varies from display to display. OLED is free from almost all the downsides of LED/LCD of which their are many poor input lag, narrow viewing angles, bad contrast, bad HDR, dirty screen effects, screen glow, backlight bleeding etc. Plasma 600Hz is marketing rubbish, it's just more post processing soap opera effect with a different name.
@aesircorporation19246 жыл бұрын
+Void Toast - As stated in the 2 links I gave in the comment before yours, the 600hz plasma refresh rate is not a "post processing soap opera effect". It's just not the refresh rate we care about.

No mention of OLED degradation (aka OLED equivalent to burn-in) in the review. With OLED light set to 80 for typical use, you're bound to see it within a couple of years. Check rtings' burn in testing of B6 models. And no LG has done nothing substantial to reduce this issue. It's an inherent flaw in the OLED technology.

@TeslaRoger6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Oquendo No, LG has fixed burn in issues. Personally tested by playing a game with a static hud for over 12 hours straight.
@joshuamckown31456 жыл бұрын
LG's documentation warns of an effect similar to burn in, in which images can sometimes stick on the display after being static on-screen for too long, although the pixels, physically, are still fine. The C7 has some onboard utilities for clearing this issue. I have never had this issue on my C7, I've heard LG fixed this (maybe in firmware) but I don't really know.

I just purchased the LG 65" C8 and loving it. I have loaded the PLEX app, and am trying to play movies from either my Mac Mini or my Synology NAS. When I hit the enter, it just sits there with a spinning circle. Is this because my devices are now to old. The Mac Mini is 2012 2.6Ghz i7 with 16GB of 1600 DDR3 memory, and the NAS is a DS414+ 4 cores with default memory...I would of thought either of these would lay smoothy....Any ideas, sorry for the long winded post. I might add, that some of the 1080p episode downloads of shows eg : Madam Secretary do play, but only after I see a buffer statement and then it pays, like maybe 15 secs from when I hit enter. Thanks in advance.. OH, and my answer is, the tech I have is just getting too old.

Check and see if the Mac Mini’s intel processor supports quick sync. You may not have enabled hardware transcoding on it.

@@LonSeidman Thanks Lon, not entirely sure what you mean here, but I will google search around. I did bring up my settings for PLEX in the browser and checked the box "Use hardware acceleration when available" that was not checked. Maybe that is what you meant. will try it anyway.
