I wouldn't actually call this a long term review as much as I would call it a late review. None of the points touched upon benefit from having taken longer to review the phone. In fact, most of the conclusions reached sound like every critical review released within the same week as the V30 itself. I didn't understand why he said the manual controls make no sense. His reasoning was that you wouldn't use them for every single picture you take. That's like saying the engine in a sports car makes no sense because you're not driving at 160 mph (260 kph) all the time. The feature is there so that it can be accessed when needed, not all the time. For a review labeled "very long term" I'd have expected more than just the reviewer going outside and hitting the shutter button in automatic a few times. it seems that people just do phone reviews for the free clicks. Only a very few are actually adding to the knowledge space with what they produce, with some I've come across even saying they think doing so is a waste of time.

At our house we have the LG V30, Note 8 and iPhone X .. by far the most versatile and problem-free phone is the LG V30. Banding .. easy fix .. disable Auto Brightness. I use 75% and scheduled Comfort View. It's an easily fixed software issue not a hardware problem. Get a thin case or skin. If the rear glass breaks it's a $15 problem Vs iPhone X's $500 or 2X $199 AppleCare which you're insane not to purchase. Further, Android 8 is indeed available to Korean V30's and coming soon to other countries. The only reason to purchase a Note 8 is if you like or need a Stylist, women with long nails like my wife will indeed appreciate the Stylist S Pen for typing etc.

For a 2019 owners experience read here. Owner for 2 days. Bought at JB HiFi in Australia. Phone is currently on offer here so I picked it up to replace my ageing Note 3. Screen issue is not present on my handset. I take it LG has taken the time to rectify this issue. It looks great. Very dark blacks. Zero bleeding. I find the phone to be very fast and have a decent battery life. Sure it could be longer, but it's up there with the best. Performance is good too. Of course we always want stronger, faster and longer from everything in life but I find this is miles ahead of my old phone but that's to be expected of course. As for bloatware, there's not much but as with all other android devices this can be easily disabled in the app manager. The rear camera is very good and I'm not used to this level of low light performance from a phone. The wide angle camera is a nice addition too. Currently the phone is running android 8.0. The front facing camera is rather poor, but I never use it so it's no big deal to me. It looks like the same quality as that found on my old Note 3. Overall I'd give this phone a 9/10 in my early experience with it. So far so good.

Still rockin' my LG V30 in 2019! To me it is the best smartphone out there. It is lightweight, which is something often overlooked, and that makes it one of the best phones to handle constantly. It fits in the hand well (for me at least), has pretty good battery life, nice camera setup with the wide angle lense (which is probably the best feature on it), an easy on the eyes oled screen which i much prefer over my G6 (i do notice the G6 is a bit sharper of an image however), and i dont mind the lg software, i find it to be much less intrusive than say... touchwiz (ugh). Also notable is that they put the fingerprint scanner in the exact location it 'should be' on every smartphone ever made, and i like how it is also the power button which in a phone case like i have, keeps it from being turned on all the time in my pocket (as the power button on the side of other phones will often do). So in summery its the worst phone ever for the manufacturers cause i will keep using it until lg or someone else actually makes something better. I looked at the V40 and its just a gimmicky redo not worth it, the note 9 was a contender but it is heavy and has the stupid touchwiz interface (not a fan). Perhaps this year will bring something better such as the note 10 or v50? We shall see... Until then LONG LOVE THE V30 :)

I sense a fraud here. Im guessing this is a long term review in the sense that you're reviewing it again after waiting a while. Not really based on long term usage. I had my v30 for a month and had no issues with screen burn in or color banding. The camera is fantastic, especially compared to this lead weight (Note8) im carrying around. Updates aren't an issue. My wife's g4 was running 7.1 before we replaced it. My Note 8 sports 7.1.1 (yeah 7.1.2 is higher). Simple things like turning on hifi dac one time in the pull down was lost on you. Every time you hug a compatible headphone in it automatically comes on after that first time. The UI on LG is way more stock than the Note 8. No Bixby. Button. And the sides don't scratch easily. They do dent when slamming against the ground though.. all in all, I think your review is based off a 1 hour impression of the phone, not long term use..
@GriffinWiebel7 жыл бұрын
I have a V30. The first one I got had serious banding issues. Returned it for a replacement. My current V30 is fine, but, when the brightness is low, dark objects either don't render or have a pixelated look.
@mobilePCreviews7 жыл бұрын
same here. I got lucky and never had to bring mine back, but the display looks almost like you're looking at a piece of cloth. Very "grainy". That being said, watching movies and playing games you don't notice it at all, it's only when you have a solid color darkish on the screen. For me it's completely livable and i still love this phone, but i'd recommend checking out one in a store before purchasing if someone is that worried about their experience being ruined by it
@AWSimDrifter7 жыл бұрын
I think that might be to do with the colour gamma. I get the same if the gamma is too low on my OLED TV. I don't know if Android permits it, but if you can, change the colour gamma values and hopefully it should make it better

As an LG V30 owner, I've not noticed any issues with my display, though I generally don't run it at full brightness because it's usually too bright for my tastes. I really enjoy the Quad DAC, I never had to go into a menu to turn it on, it was on by default from the start, and it activates as soon as you connect an audio cable to the headphone jack. I've compared it to my wife's S8 in the car, and I've listened to it on high-end headphones. The V30 just sounds better. The display has been great for me personally, and when using it with Google daydream, the experience was remarkably close to my Oculus Rift, however, there is no competing with the tracking controls found in room scale VR kits. I don't use the camera much but that wasn't why I got it, but what I have used has been more than satisfying.

I am a v30 owner myself and don't get me wrong the jepg sharpness can be annoying but if you're like me and shoots in manual almost all the time, the raw files are amazing! I have the Lightroom app and it makes my friend's note 8s and iPhone Xs photos look significantly inferior. You didn't touch on the great audio recording and quad DAC for headphone playback. I'm only saying this so that people who are interested in this phone as a content creation and consumption tool should not be swayed away by your review. LG has bad marketing for this phone anyway I'd really appreciate it if the youtube reviewer community that I trust gave this phone a manual approach review. LG G6 is currently on Amazon at around 390 euros, which clearly suggests that the LG V30 is - up to this date (21 Feb 2018) - still overpriced at around 690 euros on Amazon. The main issue of LG G6 for me is its insufficient autonomy (LG chose to eliminate the removable battery and still provide low autonomy...). In my opinion the LG V30 is worth buying if the prices goes below 500 euros, especially considering that so many phones will be released for lower prices after the MWC 2018.

You don't need to go into settings to switch on the hifi dac. There is a quick toggle in the usual pull down bar at the top with the Wi-Fi and bluetooth toggles. And when you turn it on once, it automatically goes on every time you plug in a headphone.

About LG's image processing; Flip it into manual, and turn on RAW+JPEG. This will give you the JPEG (LG Software) And the RAW (Just the image) This will (obviously) get rid of LG's image processing. I'm not 100% sure if you can do this on the V30 as I use the LG G4. But as a Smartphone aimed at people who want good mobile Photo and Video; it makes 0 sense if you couldn't use RAW.

AKG K7xx are low impedance, BTW. They're supposed to be easy to drive, hehe
@alexanderg19357 жыл бұрын
True, but impedance isn't really the issue, it's the DAC quality that matters. Samsung for instance have astonishingly poor DACs in their products (my S8 included) and deliver a very mediocre soundstage, particularly if you have high-end earphones. My se846's sound totally different with a high end amplifier and the DAC in the V30 is by all accounts, phenomenonal.

@gnomehanslan14306 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing about impedance. Its only half of the story on how hard it is to drive. The other half is its efficiency or how sensitive it is per milliwatt or millivolt. The AKG K7XX's are actually pretty ineffecient. Also, yeah... you wanna know a really hard to drive headphone? The HE6. 50 ohms of impedance, and if my memory serves me right, under 85db/mw. Can be ran on a phone, but good luck actually being able to drive them in general before you hit distorting levels of volume and still isn't that loud.

*YOU CAN SHOOT IN RAW* the phone's target audience is not mainstream sheep who don't understand basic photography. Anyone who expects to get a perfect photo every time should get an iphone or samsung as they've never used a SLR before where you're used to having only 7% of the photos being usable. I have a V30+ 128gb bought in HK, ZERO problems, what you mention does not exist on my unit. I agree with you about the software which is basically the same as the G3 which is outdated I do not like it. Pixel 2 XL was my other choise but when I felt the V30 in my hand...instantly my other hand reached for my wallet. If you have some questions I'll be glad to answer. Happy New Year.

I know I'm commenting a bit late. I got my v30+ back in December and immediately noticed the dark spots and banding on my model. After a 2 week turn around from LG repair my new screen is progressively brighter at the bottom. Needless to say it's in the mail for another repair.

No offense to the reviewer but he's an idiot for using just auto-mode for the camera. the LG V30 has full manual camera and video controls. AND VIDEO , full manual It's a beast camera when you use the pro mode in manual you have full control like DSLR. The way he used the camera It's like buying a porshe and driving it around in 1st gear only .

Ditched my S8+ a couple of weeks back to give the V30 a shot. I'm happy with my decision. Quad DAC with my Shure SE846 sound amazing. Finger print scanner is in the proper location and scans much faster than S8+. Battery life is great. POLED screen is excellent. I also prefer the more rectangular screen/body shape as it feels easier to hold and easier to view normal documents and web. The camera is excellent, I have no complaints with it, I even decided to return the DxO One for Android I was testing since the V30 camera is as good or better. I've been a long time Sammy user and had just about every Sammy phone over the last 5 years, Note 4 I think was my my favorite. In many ways the V30 reminds me of the N4 minus the S pen but with better specs and amazing DAC.

I was an actor in the youtube commercial for this phone. It was filmed in Sydney Australia and the Korean producer (hired by LG but not internally affiliated) did a total runner back to Korea with no intention of paying the actors, extras or production crew. Thankfully my agent chased them up hard and took it up with LG Australia, and after nearly 4 months we finally got our money. Not happy with LG for choosing a sketchy producer but that doesn't mean their engineers are at fault. Good phone for the price.

It's interesting that you mention LG not updating their software. This must be a carrier related thing. LG Korea offers an app that allows you to update your phone over USB the moment they have the update ready from the factory and not wait for your carrier to send out the update. Perhaps LG doesn't do this internationally.

I am a long term user also and this is my daily driver. The V30 has been awesome! Had been a long time Samsung owner and I am not going back. Camera is awesome, screen is awesome, performance is awesome. I don't have the Oreo update yet, but it will come.
@varsh-thaker7 жыл бұрын
the biggest let down is the LG's software update support... I have an LG G6 in India and to be honest i love it but there are 2 more big issues 1. Why does it have a glass back and not support wireless charging... they could have either included wireless charging as an add on or gave us metal back like on oneplus... It is just there waiting for us to break... 2. The standby time is awful... if you constantly use your phone yes you get good battery life... But if you have around 25% battery while going to sleep it just shuts down sometimes in the morning... It's that bad...
@xfirefox_x7 жыл бұрын

The G6 has wireless charging in US but quad DAC in India. Honestly I'd rather have the quad DAC but hey, to each his own!
@varsh-thaker7 жыл бұрын
That's a very good choice in my opinion... I love the quad DAC on my g6 and was a big reason i chose it even though it didn't had wireless charging... But what i think is that from LG's side it is not a good thinking to assume that no one would want it... My point is either give us an option for wireless charging as an add on or an option to replace the back glass cover with other materials like metal or wood as without wireless charging there isn't any benefit of glass... Metal could be light weight or more durable and wood can give you better texture... Just saying...

Recently got V30+, my first LG phone ever - replacing Galaxy S7 Edge which drove me nuts. Also having owned an S6, I am so done with Samsung and their annoying bloatware and design shortcomings. (I do like the Tab S2 to a large degree, though.) I should probably have switched to LG a long time ago (all appliances in my home are LG, except for a very annoying Samsung microwave oven). Whatever LG bloatware came with the phone (typical malady of Asian phones), got disabled and stayed that way. (Unlike Samsung pests that persist, no matter how hard one tries to disable their duplication of Android / Google apps.)

Ive had the lg v30 for a month and yeah I agree that this phone has a few faults that can be solved if the software was updated. I downloaded the Google Pixel APK camera app and it took way more clear and detailed pictures than the standard camera app. Now I had two Lg V30s because of a stupid problem on my providers end (but I thought it was the phone having problems so I got a replacement). my first phone didn't have any of the screen issues, but my second one has the uneven lighting and for some reason... on the netflix app when I scroll shows and movies, the transition from black to the netflix grey takes a loong time to change. it looks like the black image kinda drags behind like a blurr effect, I haven't seen anyone talk about this problem though so I think its an isoltaed issue, but it makes me wonder what you said; if its just a fail on LGs quality control... which I think it is. I got a case on it and I dont have to worry about the smudges or drops. I give this phone an 7/10 but if they fix issues with an update it will go to an 8 or 9 for me. EDIT: Did anyone else with a V30 notice that snapchat and instagram don't use the cameras to their full potential? its really weird...

I've had three V30's now and this last one is the least glitchy. The previous two had the same issues such as randomly shutting off no matter if I was using it or not. The one issue that carried over to this last replacement is the phone will freeze occasionally and I have to restart the phone. I haven't experienced any of the screen issues that have been reported. I've owned every LG G model starting with the G2 (with the exception of the G5) and unless a miracle happens with a software update, this will be my last one.
@VEN0M4157 жыл бұрын
Damn sorry to hear about that, I think Lg needs to address this issue of phones having different issues, if they were harder on the quality control then this phone would be a great buy. tbh the issues I had with my phones werent even LGs fault, so my provider is saying they might be able to have me switch to a different brand, I do like the Pixel 2 because of the camera but my god the audio from the v30 is just splendid for me as I use it for music half the time. Im really torn and I hope a solution is found soon.
@VEN0M4157 жыл бұрын
Chandler Russell yeah it really is a shame, thankfully on Instagram I can load my pictyres but i wish you could do that in snapchat as well... But that would ruin snapchats purpose I guess. Snapchat probably has a deal with apple to have their software be more compatible with their devices.

As a V30 owner (upgraded from original droid turbo), I absolutely love it. I was mildly disappointed with the low light, but it's still absolutely miles ahead of my old phone. I can usually get 2 days out of my phone and I have the always on display running and generally watch at last an hour per day of netflix on it. While I do think you have a point as far as camera quality with this phone in general, if you're comparing automatic settings to the Pixel 2, that seems a bit unfair. This phone is driven to the multimedia oriented people who like fiddling around with settings and enjoying the manual control. There *does* seem to be some sort of processing on the photos, but overall, I picked up a silicone skin for it and have absolutely loved every aspect of it. The Quad-DAC is a huge bonus and another point toward its multimedia aspect. The competition seems like it'd be better just for every day use and quick snap style photos/videos. The V30 is more of a toy or tool (depending on the user) that you can play around with regarding everything picture, video, and audio.

Got the v30 in November... Zero screen issues. Also have the G6, no comparison. The v 30 is Superior in every way. Even on your video I prefer the pictures taken by the V 30. The pixel's aren't bad, but to my eye they're not even close to better. I've compared this phone to everything on the market right now and I believe it blows all of them away. Oh, and I paid about $400 for it brand new.

Most people use phones for two years. Two months is nothing compared to that. A review is supposed to help people buy, don't call it a long term review if you're only 8% of the way into it's average lifespan.

That doesn't make the title less of a lie. Call it was it is, a review. Not a "VERY LONG TERM" review. I don't want a two year review, though those are helpful. What i want is for the clickbait title to fuck off.

I have a V30 and have no banding issues or colour uniformity issues even at 0% brightness. However, i do notice different shades of white at full brightness on the upper screen versus the lower part. The upper part is bluish white while the lower part appears more yellowish white. This happens at brightness above 80%. But when it displays colour it all looks perfect. How strange.

My experience (about 2 months) with the V30's screen. After hearing about the banding and color uniformity issues I immediately checked my unit when I purchased it from T Mobile. It could be that I am lucky, but my screen is nearly perfect. The only issue I have with it is when you set your display brightness to the lowest setting colors become muted and watching videos becomes difficult. But for me it's a non issue since i just set the brightness to around 20% and it looks just as good again.

Hey Eber! I've had the V30 for about 3 months now! I wanted to send this message to you directly because I really like your reviews :) I feel like reviewers are really quick to slot the stock apps as bloatware that needs to be deleted. Honestly, in my opinion, the stock calendar, tasks and email apps on the V30 are great. They take way better advantage of the tall aspect ratio compared to google's offerings, and they support the latest features like home screen shortcuts. I know there are third parties that some prefer more, but I'm willing to bet some of LG's apps are more fully featured than Google's stock android apps. And that's why its such a shame reviewers never seem to actually try it- they just run away screaming "BLOATWARE" haha

As someone who has the V30 I have experienced screen issues. Like the Pixel 2 XL, I've been getting the "blue shift" problem on my V30. There's also screen banding issues. While I was browsing Reddit at night (I was on night mode), when I went to the setting to change some stuff, I noticed that the bottom left of the screen tends to be more brighter than the rest of the screen. I've only experienced the screen banding issue at night with the lowest brightness.

Iv got this phone. I didn't see any of the color issues or over sharpening you spoke of. And if i got the time to set up my shot...manual mode is perfect. I will say that as a V30 owner the phone has been phenomenal. It’s fast as hell and I don’t see any of the screen issues reported by the reviewer. The reviewer failed to even mention the quad dac and I find it interesting that he is hitting LG for slow Oreo updates and recommending the Note 8 which has only had a limited release of Oreo just like the V30. Samsung has historically been at the bottom of the list for OEM updates. I have moved away from Samsung after many years of support because my usage changed severely over the last couple of years and my S7 Edge slowed down to the point of becoming virtually unusable in a year and a half and I experienced severe screen burn in. I love Samsung and would still be with them but they don’t handle extreme power usage very well. Time will tell with the V30 but can say that I used the G4, which was my first LG phone, for 6 months in the aforementioned manner and experienced none of those issues. The V30 camera was built for manual pro style usage. I’m not a big camera user but I put the pixel camera apk on the V30 for my usual full auto usage and it works great.

I had the V30 for almost a month and ended up returning it (I actually had a 2nd V30 and only kept it for a few hours). LTE reception was horrible (was mostly fixed with an update since though) and the fingerprint scanner was an issue for me. The camera was OK but a step back from the Galaxy S7 I had. The screen on my first one was OK, but the 2nd one I got seemed to be a bit better. I think the screens have been improved. There are now reports that the glass in front of the V30 camera is prone to breaking without being dropped. I'm using a Pixel 2 XL now and I don't regret leaving the V30 behind, although it is a very nice phone.

I have the Europian unlocked version of the LG V30, and personally don't have any of the display problems. The only thing I could notice is something called Black smear when scrolling through black (or dark grey) images or forums at 10% brightness during the night, which is a known issue with OLED. The software is not *that* ugly, and the bloatware is minimal (Clock, Calender, Tasks, Music, Phone, QuickMemo+, Smart Doctor, Smartworld, LG Health, LG Mobile Switch, Audio Recorder, FM Radio and File manager are not removable, of which I consider Smart Doctor, Smartworld and LG Mobile Switch as useless). The clock app has an awfull color scheme though, and I directly installed an other clock app, but was planning to do so anyways as I like to set spotify alarms. The camera is decent/nice, especially when you shoot in manual mode and save the raw files, to edit later on your pc. Anyways those are just my 2 cents.
