Throughout human history there have always been men who loved men and women who loved women. But if you happened to be a monarch, you had considerably more power to do as you pleased with whomever you desired. It has always been good to be the king. Here are the stories of 7 Kings and 1 Queen of Europe. As rulers, some where good, some bad and some great. But all were human and all loved and lusted after members of their own sex.
Henry III of France (1551 - 1589)
Louis XIII of France (1601 - 1643)
Christina of Sweden (1626 - 1689)
Frederick the Great (1712 - 1786)
William II of the Netherlands (1792 - 1849)
Charles I of Württemberg (1823 - 1891)
Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845 - 1886)
Umberto II of Italy (1904 - 1983)

You missed arguably the GAYEST one of all: the Czar Ferdinand of Bulgaria! He would vacation in Capri, which in late 19th and early 20th Centuries something of a resort for aristocratic and wealthy European gay men. Diplomats from other countries soon learned that if they wanted an audience with the Czar of Bulgaria they would bring along a handsome "secretary" or "body guard" to entertain him after the audience was complete.

More specific, she wasn't gay. She was bisexual, at least in her later years. After moving to Rome she begun a love affair with a cardinal there. But yeah, it is kind of weird that it isn't even mentioned in our education system, considering how often we like to promote our egalitarian view of sex, gender, love, race, etc.

Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots was raised*** as was the norm for a woman of her social status. Upon the death of her husband, Francis ii (Valois) of France; she was no match for her mother-in- law, Catherine de Medici. Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots was a terrible ruler who did not understand politics at all. She lacked the "male" training of Elizabeth I, of England and subsequently was made a captive and, eventually beheaded because of her poor choices and foolish romantic ideas. _______________________________ ***Raised by her mother and then … by her future father-in-law's (Henry ii of France) mistress (i.e. Diane de Poitiers); to be a pleasant and compliant wife (m. 1558) to Henry ii's son, Francis (who became Francis ii of France in 1559). Unfortunately, for Mary, Francis ii died in 1560. She returned to Scotland to claim her throne and (secondarily) avoid being a pawn of her mother-in-law (Catherine de' Medici) who was regent to Mary's brother-in-law (i.e. Charles ix, of France)

Louis XVI got what was coming to him! It was absolutely outrageous, such extreme wealth and decadence whilst your people starved! Eventually you get what's coming to you! Let that be a lesson to dictators past and present! What goes around, eventually comes around!
@TheRealTricky
@TheRealTricky 4 жыл бұрын
@@lizzy9975 A bit narrow-minded way to state it. I'm not quite sure if beheading was justified. He became king in a time France was already at the brink of an economical crisis, and from what I heard, he was not competent enough to properly deal with it. He also inherited a bit of the effects of the loathing towards royalty thanks to his predecessor... a certain guy who called himself "Le Roi Soleil". He also placed his trust in a man who was fired by Louis XV for good reasons, but he did so due to lack of experience and lack of preparation, as Louis XV died at the most inappropriate moment imaginable. If that didn't happen, maybe Louis XVI might have been a better king, as Louis XV did book some success in restoring France's economy. And when it comes to dictators of the time... Practically all leaders were back then. Democracy, even it being an invention from ancient Greece, about 2 millennia ago, has only quite recently become a world standard of ruling. From what I heard Louis XVI did had the right intentions, but lacked the experience and competence to set the chaos in which he became king right, not to mention as Danny M said, had the clergy and nobility turned against him for his ideas for his goodwill (and reasons like that can still put a stop to very good, and even absolutely needed political actions, on this very day, for which quite often the wrong people get the blame too). It's easy to judge by a) modern standards of a state leader which were not really the standards back in the day, and b) by only having a fraction of information. Yes Louis XVI has been a poor king, but nobody who was as poorly prepared as he was, could have done any better in a situation like that, not even in modern times. Who knows what would have happened if Louis XV died years later giving XVI more time to prepare for the job? It's sometimes appears easy to cast judgment onto somebody, but when taking time to dive deeper into all facts, things suddenly appear to become very very complex.

Very interesting! May I correct one thing? "Karl" was not the nickname of Charles of Württemberg. It was his real name. Karl is the German version of Charles, so as he was from a German speaking country, his name was Karl. Frederick of Prussia had to watch when his friend von Katte was beheaded. A ver traumatising experience. When he was king, he tried to abolish serfdom, but was not completely successful, as his nobility opposed. But he layed the foundations for it to be abolished. He also established a schooling system and odered all children to go to school to learn reading, writing and calculating. He odered peasants to grow potatoes, which fed more people than grain, and greatly reduced starvation among the poor population. For his time, he was very modern (well, except for his antisemitism, his misogyny and his racism towards the Polish) and he cared more for the peasants and the poor than most monarchs.

I have always found the story of King Francisco de Asís (Francis of Assisi) fascinating. He was married to Queen Isabella II of Spain and everyone at the time knew he was gay. People called her Paquita (a female nickname of his name) and some historians atribute his first lover to be his favorite priest: Father Claret. There were many stories and drawings dedicated to insulting both him and the Queen (known to be a bit of a sex addict) The resemblance of the children (and of the current Spanish kings) to Enrique Puigmoltó (the queens most known lover) is almost undeniable. When the Queen had to leave the country in 1868 after the Revolution, the couple decided to separate and Francisco lived his final days in the palace of Epinay with his long-time partner Antonio Meneses. Some interesting stories about the couple are: The queen said after the very failed wedding night "What could I expect from a man who wears more lace to bed than me?" Also in Spanish the official term for pannier (the skirt piece worn underneath the dresses at the time) is Guardainfantes, meaning infantry guard due to the Queen keeping soldiers underneath her skirt. I hope you find this interesting and maybe you can add it to another video about gay monarchs :)

when I went to visit Neuschwanstein, there is a museum with photos and facts about King Ludwig, there was nothing about him being gay, but I remember looking at the pictures and being like " I think he was gay" and at the very end of the tour there was a small description of him that included "... homosexual tendencies.." and I said out loud "I knew it, he was gay"!!

@Michael Evans sodomy wasn't a common practice between gays in that era, it's a fairly recent thing, it happened but wasn't typical. But if you see a man praising the softness of another mans thighs, that was a reference to gay sex as it was commonly practiced in the past.

Fun fact about Old Fritz! He told his nephew that he wanted to be buried in the Sanssouci Palace grounds by the vineyard greenhouse, next to his doggos. His nephew was like "nah" though and had him buried next to his dad instead. During WWII the N*zis dug him up and hid him just incase his tomb was bombed, but after they fell he was seized by US troops and taken a few states away. It wasn't until the German reunification in 1991 when he got his wish and was laid to rest with them good boys 🐕 and to this day people still leave potatoes on his grave marker instead of flowers, as he'd credited with introducing the potato to Europe - though at the time they were all super suspicious of them and he had to trick them into stealing them during a famine so his people didn't starve

One's sexual orientation is not a choice, but it is possible for one who is straight to choose to have bi-sexual or gay partners due to emotional trauma or if a intelligent woman to chose not to run the risk of a husband or dying in childbirth, finding a husband to accept your intellect back then was very hard , we need love and turning to a female lover is not unusual. Royal marriages were mostly for politics, and finding a compatible and kind spouse was rare, and the sex rough and unfulfilling. For a woman who had to tolerate the careless, let's get it over with painful sex of a husband who cared nothing for her, I understand why a female lover would have been sought. And if you married a stupid man beneath your intellectual level, well that is frustration on many levels.
@Lillyluvsanime
@Lillyluvsanime 3 жыл бұрын
@@myrnaskogland1268 .... I feel like you may have meant to reply this to someone else? I'm not sure what a woman risking an unfulfilling marriage has to do with my many times great uncle King Richard the Lion Heart.... As for your statement that people who were really opposite sex attracted might have turned to same sex lovers to avoid violence or health risks of pregnancy, I would like to point out that there were plants known to force a miscarriage or prevent pregnancy, in medieval/renaissance times it would be more dangerous to have a same sex lover than to have an opposite sex lover as people who acted on same sex attraction would likely be killed, beaten or otherwise tortured if discovered, but (especially in royal courts) having opposite sex trysts, while frowned upon were not punished the same way as same sex ones.... unless you were a woman, then it depends on who found you/who you were sleeping with. A king or queen however would be more likely to get away with same sex romances and intercourse, but they wouldn't be the only alternative. As I said, it was common for kings to have many woman lovers alongside their wives, and similarly queens had male lovers (sometimes employed by the king to serve as the queen's lover). In some royal courts, the lover of the king or queen was an official position with fairly high social status. So, it's more likely that if someone in the royal family or court had an affair with a same sex lover, it's less likely because same sex was a better alternative to abusive opposite sex intercourse and unemotional marriages, but rather because of genuine love and/or attraction, just like those who had affairs with opposite sex lovers. Also, totally possible that there were just a lot of bisexual or sexually fluid royals, they just didn't have the terms for those things.

Hello Lindsay, a pleasure listening to you. I'm a history fan from Spain, a country with a rich history, but scarcely known in the English-speaking world. I imagine you chose examples of LGTB royals whose love lives were well documented, rather than simply speculated upon. Otherwise, I would have also included King Enrique IV de Castilla (Spain) who never produced a convincingly legitimate heir, despite marrying twice, and was rumoured to have relations with his courtier Beltrán de la Cueva, who in turned was rumoured to have fathered a child with Enrique IV's wife, the Queen. The King claimed this daughter was in fact, his own, and a civil war broke out between the supporters of this child, Juana, as the legitimate heiress of Enrique IV and those who favoured Isabel, the King's sister, as their were no doubts about her lineage. Isabel won this war and succeeded her older brother as Isabel de Castilla, later known as Isabel la Católica, or Isabel the Catholic Monarch, the most well-known queen in the history of the Spanish-speaking world.

I never knew that Queen Christina was the child of Gustavus Adolphus, they can't have been more different. For those who don't know, Gustavus Adolphus, aka "the lion of the north" is the king that reformed the Swedish Army into a professional fighting force and put Sweden on the road to Empire. He was perhaps the greatest general of the 30 years war. And his military reforms were an inspiration for Napoleon

The only way I know how it's pronounced is my 14+ trips to Germany over the years, thanks to the Army. German pronounciation is quite regular...if you know the code.
