In the history of the world there have been numerous royals and countless common people who preferred the romantic company of their own gender. Acceptance of this has varied by time period and by culture. Being gay was often made much easier if you were a person born to wealth and privilege. Here are the stories of 8 royals from around the world - complicated an interesting people who happened to be gay or bisexual.
Philippe I, Duke of Orléans (1640 - 1701)
Hortense Mancini (1646-1699)
Prince Henry of Prussia (1726-1802)
Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Parma (1741-1763)
Archduke Ludwig Viktor of Austria (1842-1919)
Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo (1936-2008)
Lord Ivar Mountbatten (1963-)
Manvendra Singh Gohil (1965-)

So what? Heterosexual and homosexual, straight-gay are the umbrella term for the exclusive opposite sex and same-sex relationship because bisexual is not an exclusive sexual orientation, so i think it's fine and you can understand that.

Gotta be careful with these blanket statements. "Born into wealth and privilege" does not mean you get to live your life as you please. Inevitably there are rules and customs and expectations to be followed... or else. And that "or else" would likely include the disappearance of your "wealth and privilege." The LAST thing I'd want to be born into would be royalty. Look at Edward VIII - his choice was to live in misery and loneliness as KING, or in married happiness and disgrace in banishment. Royals are CHAINED - they are not, in any way, FREE. Nope... I certainly don't advocate that it's best to be poor either... as with many things, it's MODERATION that enables a balance between privilege and freedom.

@@TheKappybook of course relationships weren't just about sex, but the teacher-student thing... You described pederasty. The main reason homosexuality was so much frowned upon in history, because of association to old men having sex with adolescent boys as a "rite of passage". It's creepy and still continues today in the form of hazing in some armies and is the basis of prison rape culture. It's not an equal relationship, to say the least.

Back in those days, to have such relationships was rather accepted, but it was obvious paedophilia.

I had tea with that last one, Prince Manvendra. He was visiting town(tulsa, OK) and I just happened to get into a talk about lgbt stuff with a shop owner at the local mall, and she invited me to join her and a small group of people to have a private get together with him, as she'd been in contact with him for years through their respective lgbt activism and he was literally stopping by that evening to visit HER, his friend. he was super chill. talked about his struggles since he came out, how he was disowned and all that and his activism and his plans for his home country. it was a really cool experience that I didn't appreciate properly at the time. it was only a few years ago, but I was dumb enough to only think "holy shit im having tea with a prince." I really wish I had paid more attention to him and what he had to say, rather than just being an extra presence eating the lovely food the shop owner had prepared. and no, I didn't record anything then either, we were asked not to because it was a very private meet.

Me: they were in hiding fearing for their lives, Karen. I will never understand how people don't get that LBGT+ people have always existed. Then again people think you're sensitive and a snowflake if you physically cannot digest milk, because "people back then weren't so sensitive". Yes they were Janet, but back then they just died and nobody knew why.

It’s not like Liliana was some Johnny come lately gold digger- they’d been together for 30 years! The only reason they hadn’t married 30 years earlier is due to the law not allowing it yet. So think of Liliana as her wife of 30 years. Does that make the kids fighting the will a bit of a different story now?
