Acceptance of this has varied by time period and by culture. Being gay was often made much easier if you were a person born to wealth and privilege. If you look throughout history you will find that generally speaking, the wealthier people are the more prone they are to "alternative lifestyles" and the poorer they are the less prone they are to same. The poorest of the poor tend to be the least tolerant. Note that the wealthiest states in the U.S. tend to be more liberal and the poorest states tend to be more conservative .
