In the history of the world there have been numerous royals and countless common people who preferred the romantic company of their own gender. Acceptance of this has varied by time period and by culture. Being gay was often made much easier if you were a person born to wealth and privilege. Here are the stories of 8 royals from around the world - complicated an interesting people who happened to be gay or bisexual.
Philippe I, Duke of Orléans (1640 - 1701)
Hortense Mancini (1646-1699)
Prince Henry of Prussia (1726-1802)
Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Parma (1741-1763)
Archduke Ludwig Viktor of Austria (1842-1919)
Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo (1936-2008)
Lord Ivar Mountbatten (1963-)
Manvendra Singh Gohil (1965-)

TheBrcylmz it kind of invalidates his identity, which he himself said, he isn’t heterosexual for dating women as much as he isn’t homosexual for dating a man - when you erase bi identities people have this idea you have to one or the other, or that you have changing identities, when it’s not true.

yes but phillippe was dressed as a girl much longer to make him "weak" so he wound't fight his brother for the throne. Gongmin was said to be gay or bi. I kinda suspect that he might have been demisexual too. Korea, Goryeo: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gongmin_of_Goryeo He was deeply in love with his queen Queen Noguk, but it took a while. It's said after her death, he refused all women, and only had affairs with men. King Mokjong (980-1009), also Korea. King Hyegong, might also have been gay or trans. Unclear. Side note that Hwarang, part of the nobility of Shilla (the sons of) are often speculated to be gay. Also Wonhwa, daughters that proceeded the Hwarang, have a story of how they were dissolved because there were factions and two girls reportedly fell in love with each other, which caused a falling out. (It's in the samguk yusa) And then Bong Sunbin, in the Joseon era was also said to be a lesbian. She had an affair with her servant, So-ssang. That ended quite bloody. I want a Korean drama focusing on it, but I don't think it'll happen any time soon. Also, often the court maids were from the nobility, and there was a special term within the palace for women that "shared quarters" together which roughly translates to "sharing meals" (Joseon). So it was allowed, though hushed and only allowed with other court maids (probably who had similar ranks in society--so not Jung-in, or middle class with someone from upper.), not nobility. This is only Korea from the top of my head. China and Japan I'm not sure of. Though, there is a rumor that the ooku was started because the first shogun was feared to be gay by his mother, so she thought she could "cure" him by surrounding him with beautiful women. This is more rumor than fact, though. Edit: Looking it up... Togugawa Iemitsu (surname first) was said to have "homosexual preferences" and ended killing his lover in a bath after a falling out. Here is an article on Japanese samurai and practices and homosexuality. www.tofugu.com/japan/gay-samurai/ Emperor Ai of Han. Duke Xian of Jin. Duke Ling of Wei Emperor Cheng of Han was bi. "dui shi" is interesting to also look at. Emperor Fu Jian was said to be bi/pan Emperor Jian Wen of Liang was gay? Zhengde Emperor of Ming had an affair with a Muslim leader, but was most likely bi.

I'm currently reading a book about the letters Elizabeth Charlotte, the second wife of Philippe of Orleans, wrote to her relatives in Germany. Her life at the court of Versailles was actually quite sad and miserable. Her husband and mostly his lovers treated her utterly bad, mocked her, scared her ladies-in-waiting away as soon as she befriended them and took every chance away from her to get friends. She was not "happy" to make room for Philippe's lovers, she just didn't have a choice. If she didn't agree with a decision her husband made, like making one of his lovers the educator/tutor of her son, the treatment got even worse. So no, I wouldn't call their marriage "agreeable".
