@neville23088 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with linear games but it depends on the game. Uncharted is linear and so is the newer rayman games or banjo and kazooie but they're totalllllly different. A game doesn't need to be open world to be good but should upgrade with the times and be a little more open, in my opinion. That said I love all types of games, this one included.
@thegardenofeatin59657 жыл бұрын
There are two issues with "Linear" games: replayability, and "I'm stuck" factor. For replayability, compare A Link to the Past with Twilight Princess. aLttP is scripted to take place in a certain order but you can do many of the dark world dungeons and side quests out of order, making for additional found fun. TP is entirely linear, completing each dungeon sets the flag to open the next dungeon, that same added value of emergent "what happens if I do THIS first" gameplay is lost. If the game is fun to play over again, than it is a better investment than one that is not. The "I'm stuck" factor is more short term, while you're playing through. A game that is entirely linear--solve a puzzle, move to next room, solve a puzzle, move to next room--can cause you to become stuck. As Clint says, the game grinds to a halt. Now look at something like Day of the Tentacle; they usually give you two or three things you can work on simultaneously, so if you get hung up on a particular puzzle, you can go look at another one for awhile. The script for DotT is more parallel than linear.

@BadManiac I'll have to mess with the mouse smoothing as that was part of the problem. The rest simply has to do with efficiency with weapons swapping and enemy locking. It's simply better with a controller and is easier to pull of combos, switch enemies to lock onto and swap weapons on-the-fly, at least to me. It's *playable* with a kb/m but it's far more intuitive with a controller, if you don't mind a controller that is. Platform games like this just feel better with a controller to me.

@LGR13 жыл бұрын
@EmperorEva0001 There is indeed a lot of double (and triple and quadruple!) jumping in this one, and as freaking huge and spread out as the levels are, it makes sense. Add to that the floating ability and it does feel like a safety net in some situations, I'll admit that. It makes it less punishing that way and perhaps will turn some people off, but it also allows for some vast, open spaces to explore that are really spectacular.

@AcidBong As have I. The problem wasn't a lack of experience, the problem was the implementation of the game's controls. The lock-on and mouse controls are just awkward to say the least (compared to a controller, which it was clearly designed for) plus the various action buttons just map more logically to a controller. That's what happens when a game is designed for consoles in mind, unlike the first game which was designed for a mouse and keyboard.

@GX2Productions Yeah man. I find myself wanting to say more since there's often much more to absorb when playing these games, so keeping it concise yet informative isn't easy. My Duke Nukem Forever review is a good/bad example of that, ha. The only old games I can think of that are even harder to review are those really involved RPGs that are essentially pen & paper games in digital form. Those can be a major headache since they're not always intuitive to learn & critiquing them fairly is tough.

AM's Alice is still to this day one of the most beautiful and artistically original games out there. the mechanics were done to death but DONE EXTREMELY WELL (LGR isn't kidding about the controller being soooo much better) which it totally forgive the former for the latter. @gamerboy21810 жыл бұрын
If you haven't decided yet, I started with the 2nd one and still really enjoyed it without much knowledge of the first one. The story does a good job of of not letting you get too lost if you didn't play the first one. By the way, you can buy the first Alice on madness returns as dlc on Madness Returns if you really wanted to start with the first one. You just might not get the references to the original game. Playing the original first shows wonderland at its darkest hour, shows you everything she's been through, and introduces you to all of the characters and how they've changed and evolved since the first one (including Alice herself) and demonstrates how much better, but also much worse its gotten in Madness. It also shows Alice's growth and relationship with wonderland, and how she's been dealing with the death of her family. Personally, I played Madness first and loved it, but the original game gave me a greater appreciation of Alice and the rest of the characters and kind of put all of the madness into perspective. I would recommend watching short gameplay footage of both games without spoilers, then decide. I'ts really up to you, but if you do play the original first, save often and you won't have a problem.

Hey do you think 60 bucks, brand new, never been opened, still with the price tag, original alice game worth it. Because they all seemed to be around a hundred bucks new, but I found this and ordered it as fast as my fingers could.

I finished this game with keyboard and had no problems controlling it...Don't know why you saying the controls are awful...

I agree. If memory serves me right I think I enjoyed the mouse and keyboard more than the controller. More precise.

OK so I'm renting this from gamefly and when I load up the game is the option to buy there so I don't have to beat the sequel first?

Man, I wish Clint would do a video on the original Alice game. It was my first PC game and I always sing its praises whenever I get the chance.

Picked this up on sale for $5 and it was TOTALLY worth it. My only complaint is that the keyboard controls are a bit awkward, but that's nothing an Xbox 360 controller won't fix. I'm just happy to see a new, innovative platformer. It seems outside of Nintendo and a few games on the Playstation 3, that the genre of 3D platforming is not as prevalent as it once was.

You did a review on this?? I figured this game was virtually unknown because the first one came out so long ago! Thanks for giving it attention!

I was wondering. I kinda want to get this game for my pc since i don't own console of any kind. You had mentioned useing an xbox controller with your pc? how do i do that. I'm not a gamer really but i've really been wanting this game. I didn't even know you could get a controller for it.

Phreakindee do you have any plans to review the original alice?

Whoah, this game actually looks gorgeous, with some great desingn and "trippy" atmosphere. Love it. I was recently playing some unique platformer-slasher style games (Darksiders, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath so far), and I think, I'll go with this one next. Sadly, DD version doesn't come with the original. The first game is hard to get and is quite expensive where I live (it actually costs more than the sequel). Now, I have to ask, is it still necessary to play the original to enjoy the sequel?

Did you figure it out? I still can't manage to find out how to unlock the original.,

Even in 2022, it's worth a shot. The graphics and controls are obviously now outdated, but it's a solid game with a nice plot and very various environment. The difficulty can be sometimes a bit unbalanced. It does have one or two "that one passage" (meaning an extra difficult segment within an overall normal level). But nothing that ruins the game experience. In fact, the platform gameplay is rather nice and not nerving. It's however only recently that I noticed that some resistant monsters are very vulnerable to some weapons and not the others. A nice improvement compared to the first game where you could completely finish the game with only 3 weapons out of 7 or 8.

@malakaki111 I used an Xbox 360 controller with it, worked without any configuration needed. And you'll have to unlock the original game using the code provided in the game package. It will appear in the main menu once you do!
