It just occurred to me what a priceless time capsule you've got going on there. Not only do you have all these games that are so representative of a bygone era, but you also have the means to play them the way we all did back in the day, with the right hardware; no remasters or crappy emulations... Makes me a bit nostalgic just to think about it, transporting me back to the good old days of Hidden & Dangerous in coop, Giants: Citizen Kabuto (Also a pretty good cover) and, of course, No One Lives Forever! (My oh my, Cate :v)

I remember frequenting independent computer shops during the early 90's and being impressed by the boxes on the shelves but they had Amigas and Atari ST's set up with games to play so I was far too diverted to really appreciate them. Later in the mid 90's when I was a console game owner but I'd keep getting drawn in by the PC shelf in Game despite not owning a PC gamer because they were so big and beautiful. Nowadays I buy Japanese MD games because they're cheap and pretty but you still can't beat that beautiful embossed cardboard goodness. We can emulate anything now so the packaging is the star.

That Mageslayer artwork was unreal. Raven Software in their prime is one of my favorite video game developers, there was at least a decade-plus stretch from the early 90's to mid-2000s where they released an exquisite quantity of quality titles, especially Jedi Knight 2 which is probably my favorite game of all time.

Man, MegaRace, that really brings back some memories. I remember getting it with a Mindscape PC game bundle (that I can't seem to find any information on) as a kid along with D/Generation, Dragon Lore, Metal Marines, Commander Blood and a few other games that I can't remember the names of. The games didn't come with any kind of packaging and were just fitted in the box, but it was the first set of PC games I called my own. Well I ended up finding out the name of the bundle in case anyone was curious, it was cleverly named Mindscape's Big 16.

Now that everything is digital, I don't pay too much attention to cover art (and good covers are most rare now) but I loved the one for Dark Souls Prepare to die edition, simple yet beautiful and Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon because it's so cheesy, 80's and over the top that it's good (so I got the poster of course)

One of my favorite old box covers is Full Throttle with the motorcycle looking like it's going to fly out of the box into your living room. The guy riding it is gritting his teeth while everything explodes behind him. The only "recent" box cover that caught my eye was for the MMO Rift. Cute girl with a giant jeweled dagger with textures and other details. Meanwhile there are these giant ugly plants above her that are about ready to pop and you want to see her chop all of the vines with her giant dagger before they grab her.

One of the few boxed PC games I have is Star Trek: TNG - A Final Unity and I really like the art for that. It's got the Enterprise-D front and center silhouetted by a star and passing over a planet with the cast presented over it in a carousel fashion. The logo also has a nice beveled silvery chromatic foil thing going on. As a former commercial art student I definitely approve. I found it at an Antique Mall called Collectorama (or something like that). It was set up like a kind of indoor unmanned Flea Market with little areas that sellers rent out. The particular booth I found this in had a discount going so I managed to pick it up complete in box for under $10 which is actually around the eBay price (I suppose it's pretty common) but it's definitely good for something I found out in the wild.

I think for me Total Annihilation's box cover really drew my attention. A futuristic battle scene with a massive robot looming in the center. Dear God was it a wonderful game; sure it looks old now(can buy it on Steam), and yes modern day RTS's are probably more flashy and can add a bit more interesting stuff. But this is it early late 90s early 2000s stuff we are talking about here, and as far as i am concerned, TA is one of the best RTS's every made, on par with the C&C series.

Nice to see Riven. You need to finish it :p I'd love to see you do a review of the Myst series like you did for Elder Scrolls. Love your channel. Game box art was to the 90s what vinyl records were to the 70s. I remember the sheer joy of going into a department store or computer store and seeing all the juicy beautiful game boxes. That's actually how I discovered Riven in the first place. I played Myst as a 5 year old but when I saw Riven in the stores it totally blew me away. Now I'm a huge Myst fanatic after 20 years, 5 games and a failed MMO (Uru).

Nice video. One of my favorite boxarts where from a post apocalyptic 3rd person arcade driver game. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called but you would drive around in these dunebuggies that you could outfit with different kinds of weapons like rocket launchers or shotgun-type weapon. You would pick up ammo from the enemies you killed and yeah... Anyway whatever that game was called it had a very Thunderdome feel to it with a boxart to match.
