I played the original again right before making this video, checking the areas that crouch jumping was most required in this mod. No, you don't *have* to crouch jump nearly as much in HL1 as you do in Black Mesa. It often helps, but it's not required as often. Seriously, almost every single jumping puzzle in Black Mesa requires crouch jumping, whereas in HL1 it was used as more of a special move in certain situations. Here it may as well be the normal jump.

I think I might be one of the few who still loves Half-Life 1 for its jumping mechanics. It took awhile for me to get the crouch jumping and long-jump key combinations right in the Hazard Course, but it's pretty much second nature to me now. I just don't understand why Half-Life 1 is stigmatized for its jumping when it was a mechanic that was prominent in Quake, Duke 3D, Unreal, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and others. The game, next to JK, did help me overcome my fear of heights in game.

The Goldsrc engine has the deepest FPS movement mechanics. I mean whole games have been built around it. Bunny hopping, KreedZ, Hide n Seek, Surf and so on. Just look at HL1 speed runs and you realize the depth of the movement system.

I remember playing through this as ammo conserving as possible. I knew how many shots everything took, and i frequently reloaded a save at the end of a fight if i fealt i had use too many bullets or had lost too much health.

I also remember that when i got to the part where you have to jump across the elevator shaft, i had a posse of npcs with me, because i had always gone back for them and used a revolver to kill enemies before they could attack.

I don't mind crouch jumping. But when it's used for 9 out of 10 jumps throughout the entire game, it gets annoying and defeats the purpose of having a special jump. May as well be the regular jump by that point.

I'm not sure it would make a difference if it were a Valve game or not, but I certainly wouldn't have minded paying for this. I got more enjoyment from this than many $50-60 games I've played this year. The fact that it's free just makes it that much more incredible.

Honestly, I'd play this one over the original. It tells the same story, takes you on the same adventure, and personally I find it way better than the original and closer to HL2. You get used to the crouch-jumping, and even if you don't, you can edit the config files to make it the regular jump.

I actually liked black Mesa more than the original half lif, I know the limitations of 1998 held the original back but black Mesa I liked because it created a more life like experience especially after surface tension.

They cut a LOT of the narrative in Black Mesa. I miss it a whole bunch. Gameplay- and looks-wise it works very well, but that "thing" that gave you the impression of just how much trouble Earth is in was stripped and there's not much gravity to the situation in BM.

The no voice when you get the HEV suit is a known but. The VOX system in general isn't working because of bugs (suit and facility-wide.)

I agree about the first half-life, Black Mesa just made me love the series over again. The only thing this engine seems to be missing is Multi-core support, unless its on all the time but it seems to only use on CPU so..still the fps is always 100+ so i cant complain

My initial reaction is that I'd like to get back some of the old sounds and that damage from thrown objects is strangely absent but I still want to play (and donate to!) this monumental mod.

I just recently played through Half-Life and I have to agree. I like Black Mesa, On a Rail Uncut and Surface Tension Uncut more than Half-Life. Surface Tension and On a Rail for me weren't one of the worst parts of Half-Life but the platforming in the initial parts of Xen were. I am glad that they got rid of the helicopter in this part (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXXSopl-YsqqqcUm53s).

Crouch jumping is pretty much second nature in source games for me, if you play Team Fortress 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 then crouch jumping is a must. Anyway, this is an awesome mod and the Valve should hire the guy who made it.

I never completed it. Back when I downloaded it, probably in 2013, there was a major gamebreaking bug. There is an area in surface tension where you are in a military base with maybe 5-7 enemies. For them, there was no collision to their view distance and their firing capability meaning that I was shot through the ground, walls and barrels, not being able to do a thing about it.

I love Mac Blesa, but I don't love crouch jumping at all. By the way, many of the levels are much improved since Sept 2012, like Power Up and On a Rail. I also disliked Xen, but maybe when it finally appears this time around, it'll be more bearable.

I've played half life 1 so many times, that now I crouch jump in every game even if there's no benefit from it. The only thing in Black Mesa that seemed off was the strafing in mid-air and it wasn't possible to bunny hop. Also the three headed tentacle thingy was buffed, probably unintentionaly. Though the tram section was redone the best, no need to shoot at arrows to change tracks and the tram automatically stops when you jump off it.

Would this be possible to run using OSX running Windows through virtualization? Could use Bootcamp, but have got Windows installed via Virtual Box already. Virtual Box is still using experimental DirectX drivers, though this game might be OpenGL...
