I bought four to add to my current (pun intended) four 200 amp hour batteries. This gives me a total of almost 20kWh of backup, connected to 6.5 kW worth of solar panels. Works flawlessly and powers everything we throw at it without fail. Total cost was around $2300 after all the discounts, which is pretty danged good.

I’m not sure about the creative math but when I run it through my ohm’s law calculator I get 2.4 kw hour that comes out to 9.6 kWh not 20kwh’s and I just don’t have the thousands of dollars to spend for the price of your 4 lithium batteries I can buy over 25 deep cycle 100 amp hour batteries now I can see if your trying to do this on your RV but at home connected to solar panels I find it hard to believe that 4 of these 200amp hour batteries can put out more power than 25 deep cycle 100 amp hour batteries. I think it’s just you saying I got the newest toy on the block and I have thousands of dollars more than you do. Now my brother has a hole yard full of harbor freight solar panels most have quit working after about 20 years I moved in with him and connected my 500 wats of panels they are around 10 years old and have all ready not doing so well last month I got a 220 watt panel and connected it up and our batteries are charging so much better we now have lights almost all night just from 1 panel and we don’t have to run the generator so much anymore. My question to you is after spending $2300 on 4 batteries what are you going to charge them with I don’t live on the grid so I just can’t plug in several 250 amp chargers to recharge a bunch of toys to impress the neighbors with because I’ll tell you right now they don’t care and the ones who do will be more likely to come over and break your stuff because you have lights on and they don’t and like I said if your panels are over 10 years old your going to have to replace them soon or run generators to charge your expensive batteries and remember if they do get run down below around 30% they quit working I’ve lost a bunch of lithium batteries because I didn’t get them recharged soon enough. I do wish I had the thousands of dollars you people spend to save a couple of pounds for a couple of years and the creative math I’ll leave it at that

I bought one on the black friday sale... I am using it for boondocking in the desert... My old lead acid battery wasn't doing the job running my rv furnace all night (it actually was, but it was going down to 50%)... So I swapped it out... It allows me to keep my solar panels and solar charger hooker up 24/7 and not have to worry about a cold mourning freeze (battery charging below freezing)... And with 230amhr lots of power even if we get a two or three day cloudy/rain event... I am jealous that your discount was better than mine.. 😎 ❤😮

Great Video. I'm going to measure my battery compartment in my 5th wheel to see if this will fit. I think it will fit, since I have two lead acid batteries in there now. The low temp protection is very important for us, as we live in KS and it gets cold here. We don't normally camp in the winter, but do in the spring time, and can sometimes see upper 20's at night. Great video as always!! Kent

I like to use those contactless thermometers right up against whatever i'm measuring because they measure in a cone, and the farther away it is from the source the larger that cone is. you could have a 3000C arc, surrounded by dry ice, but if the sensor is several feet away, it might read below freezing.

I am upgrading my 12 volt, 17 year old DIY (replacing my 9 year old 2nd set of lead acid golf cart batteries) solar system to 48 volt LiFePo and adding capacity for EV charging using this battery. Have had one for testing and it has performed well to my expectations. One little light battery runs my freezer and refrigerator without worry. Will be buying more of these. My fellow Tucsonan Hobo Tech will not lead you astray; my go to source for DIY solar along with Will Prouse for over three years. Ty hobo.

I've been waiting patiently for a single battery replacement for 2 6v Trojan T-105 lead acids. I have those in a box on the tongue of my pop up. Not wanting to replace/redrill the box mounts to replace the Trojans, I've wanted a non Battleborn GC2 sized battery. But I also wanted a low temp discharge protection. FINALLY Litime made one. The size of this is slightly smaller than the two Trojan's side by side so this will drop into the battery box with only needing some spacers inside the box to keep it from moving around. The $600 price point verus $1800 or so for 200 aH of Battleborn helps a ton too.

Over the last 5 to 10 years, I have had to replace 4 or 5 lead acid car batteries. Even with using store and vendor discounts, prices have more than doubled. As higher capacity, LiFePO4 batteries are being produced with lower per watt hour pricing, it really is worth comparing prices with lead acid batteries. In the long run, because of all of the Pros and Cons provided in this video by the Professor, you will most likely come out ahead by choosing LiFeP04 batteries.

Good point. I bought an Anker solar power station and wanted to extend the power. The Li Time 100 amp mini battery doubled the power total and was half the Anker price of their extended battery. Yes you need a charger. With an inverter you have a full backup in case the power station has an issue.

Professor Hobo, Another wonderful review. We just purchased our 1st "Glamper" 🤪 a Grand Design Imagine 22MLE. I'd love your advice. 😊 She came with a 12V Refer, 1@165W solar panel, a Furrion 25amp, 300W charge controller, and NO INVERTER. RIGHT AWAY, I learned my 100Ah battery was not cutting it, so I actually purchased this 12V 230Ah LiTime battery a month ago, and a Victron smart shunt. Small start. BUT NOW: - I must get some kind of INVERTER & at least 1 (maybe 2) more 165W Solar Panel, and - likely replace the CHARGE CONTROLLER... Perhaps a 30A or more? IF I want to Boondock for 3-5 days. Especially IF we want to run the 15,000BTU AC for ~8hrs a night. I do have an "emergency" small 1600W Inverter Gas Generator (NEMA L5-30R, 13.3A @ 120V). I'd love to NEVER need it. Cheers! Eric

It is getting harder to make buying decisions because the tech and prices are changing so fast. But this is, without a doubt, a good battery. Some of the big brands need to cut their prices soon. Speaking of chargers. We need a charger for RV’s that can be plugged into an EV charging station. That will be a game changer.

I'n new to this, and am doing a ton of research while learning at the same time. I was leaning towards a REDODO, but now I do not know. I'm wanting to do a diy power bank with 4 or 5 12V DC plugs so that I can run a 12V Dometic, 2 12V fans and 2 cpap machines. Any suggestions? If I do use an inverter it would be something small like 500 or a 1000 watts not interested in A/C that much, as I have an ECOflow.

The raw cells can sit for years without appreciable self discharge. The BMS, however, does have a vampire draw so the actual discharge rate depends on the BMS more than it depends on the cells. That said, most LiFepO4 batteries can be shelved and you really only need to check your shelved batteries twice a year to protect your investment. Shelved batteries generally only need to be recharged once a year or so. Again to protect the investment, not necessarily because they actually need to be recharged. Charge the battery to full. Take off the top 1% with a load (I just throw a PTC heater on the battery for a minute or two), then put it on a shelf at 99% SOC. That's how you do it. Some people try to outsmart the battery and only charge it to 50% but that's silly... the cells still self discharge and letting the battery run below minimums will destroy the cells while the stress from a high charge state at the time of shelving won't do buckus compared to normal calendar aging.

So...is there a good video or explanation of how to integrate these into an older RV? Im seeing battery companies advertising their LiFePo4's for things such as lawn tractors. But those are (or were) all designed for SLA's, and are starting batteries. Would love to see a video on how to implement LiFePo4's in place of SLA's that covers things like charging and so on. Because as i see it, you'd end up having to somehow bypass the charging mechanisms that are integral to the RV or tractor or whatever.

Well, then they wouldn't be "drop in" batteries, would they? Not that every one of these corresponds to a common vehicle-battery group size. If you don't like your batteries looking like car/truck batteries, get a rack-mount battery instead. I disagree about their being any need to create whole new battery form factors every time battery cell sizes/tech changes. There are plenty of form factors already. Some variety is good, to be able to stuff batteries in all sorts of different spaces, such as in vehicles, RVs, boats, electrical boxes, server racks, etc. But I don't think the answer is to make new sizes and shapes every time the price/performance sweet spot makes a new size/shape of cell popular.

Hey Hobo Tech. I was thinking. How hard would it be to purchase say an AC200 or any midsize solar generator, and a few of these batteries. Setting it up to when it's plugged in or solar. It would charge a couple of these and IF I lost power I could feed this energy BACK INTO the midsize Solar Generator? In other words, instead of using the add on batteries some of these company's sell, could I make MY OWN extra battery that can be used with ANY device?

If you're going to deal with wiring up a custom solution to expand the capacity of a solar generator, just skip the solar generator and build the whole thing to your own specs. They'll probably blame you if you have any warranty claims, anyway. By the time you pay for an AC200 and a few of these, you could have bought a 48V rackmount battery and all-in-one, and built something much beefier, more easily.

@@changgated8255 I understand that part, but someone else on a forum said that I needed to have the same battery cell configuration as far as the same size, quantity and arrangement of the cells. For example, I think my LiTime (AmperTime) 12v 200ah 100a BMS has a 4s2p configuration. This other person said I would need to build the new battery as the same configuration. Cost-wise, going that route, it would be more expensive than if I bought another LiTime battery. I think it would be less expensive to have a 4S configuration. Just the usual reasons with any battery, like if you drop a screwdriver across its terminals or your wires, enjoy the shower of sparks. LiFePO4 is a pretty safe battery chemistry, unlike most other types of lithium ion batteries. Some of them make a nice fireworks display that will set things on fire in a hurry, but between it being LiFePO4 and having a good BMS, I have no qualms about having this type of battery in my home and my car. But in my case, when camping in my car, I'm sleeping on top of a 250 pound lithium ion PHEV battery, often with the car engine kicking on and off, with a Chinese freezer under my pillow. A LiFePO4 battery would be the least of my worries.

this looks very similar to the iqueen which i have. the terminals, the case, the terminal caps. Very weird. I like that for the same weight it has over 10% more capacity. Also more cycles supposedly. I think my power queen will last me over 10 years, same as this one. Technology is great. i would love to donate mine in 5 years if i can afford a replacement that would have 2x the power (400am / 25 lbs). Incredible. Only thing i miss is low temp cutoff, which this has. My controllers can't be shut off by low temp sensing and we hit 5 degrees below zero this year. If i get a new controller i will see if i can get one with low temp cutoff. Any ideas on a low cutoff solar controller? My renogy has a temp sensor but only for high temp. The other similarity is this Litime and my power queen are both marketed as a Lead Acid "drop in" - to be compatible with just disconnecting a LAcid and just dropping this in. i have Li and LAcid chargers so not a problem, but interesting, for old RV systems? Since I am ignorant when it comes to these types of batteries, I need to ask this question: I currently have a deep cycle battery on the front of my RV (Travel trailer), I believe it is a 12 volt (Since there is only one of them). It runs things like the slide outs, lights and fans, and other goodies that you know of as you are an RVer too. I do not have solar. (I did purchase a Solarsaga 60 to recharge my Explorer 500 - I also bought a solar controller too to charge the RV battery - but have not had to use it yet) Can I replace the current 12 volt deep cycle with this battery? @junkerzn7312
@junkerzn7312 6 ай бұрын
Yes, and also No. The batteries might be voltage compatible but if the RV is capable of charging the battery bank via an alternator you need to review the alternator specs to ensure that the alternator can actually handle it. Lithium batteries will accept full power from the alternator across the entire charging curve. Lead-acid batteries do not. Many people who have blindly replaced their lead with lithium have found themselves with a burned-out alternator a month or two later. The second issue is that lithium batteries are expensive relative to lead. Even though drop-in replacements can be charged with lead voltages (at least up to a point), it isn't ideal and will put unnecessary stress on the lithium cells. It takes a very special BMS configuration to be a true drop-in replacement and none of these cheap brands do it properly. So generally speaking when replacing lead with lithium you want ALL charging sources to be able to output a proper charging profile for the lithium to protect your expensive investment. -Matt

OP states they have a travel trailer which doesn't provide alternator charging. Literally any lead acid charger capable of 14.4v will charge all of these drop in replacement LFP's just fine if not slower. It doesn't take any kind of "special BMS". I've been running all kinds of LFP batteries for over 5 years without issue using basic 14.4v chargers, solar, and direct alternator charging in a 30 year old van as well as in a brand new RV. As for how "expensive" it is, a Walmart 100ah deep cycle costs $99 and has 50ah usable and lasts 400 cycles. To match the same amount of usable power as this 230ah LFP using lead acid costs $500 (4.6 of those Walmart batteries). This battery costs under $600 and will last 4000 cycles or 10x as long for a fraction of the weight (saving fuel). So for only $100 more you're getting 10 times the cycle life with a 5 year warranty. This is the crossroads I refer to in the video. It no longer makes sense to use lead acid at all in house batteries.

Are you kidding? The days of Battle Born being a cost-effective solution, ended years ago, and I've seen no sign that they're interested in competing. What happened is that many cheap brands started selling better and better and better LiFePO4 batteries. At the high-quality end, they've also been left in the dust. SOK, etc. Battle Born is left trying to convince people that their reputation and warranty justify their crazy/obsolete prices. They're not the first company/brand to keep on milking the cash cow of brand reputation from the good old days before other brands caught up. You know, the old "Insist on the original, we were the first quality product to market, so ignore the newcomers" strategy. There's more than one brand of copier, tissues, and mass-produced car now. If you want to pay extra for genuine Xerox, Kleenex, or drive a mint Model T Ford, go for it.

"Drop in replacement" means you drop it in and use it. As long as your charger supports 14.4v (lead acid or lithium) it charges fine. The brains are in the battery. For solar you set to standard flooded lead acid and forget it. The only time you might need to buy something is if your charger is 20+ years old and only provides 13.6v. In that case you go to Progressive Dynamics and get a 3 stage charger for $200 that will do 14.4v. So no, it's not a big deal.

You can't mix and match sizes!
@junkerzn7312
@junkerzn7312 6 ай бұрын
If they are both 12.8V (4s) LiFePO4, you can put them in parallel even though they are different sizes. They will charge and discharge in proportion to their capacities, roughly. There will be a SOC offset while charging and discharging that will develop in the middle of the SOC range, but disappear at the ends (near 0% or near 100%). So it basically works fine. You CANNOT put them in series when they are different sizes, however. Because of the SOC offset, the two batteries will wear at slightly different rates, but still be fairly close. You run with what you have. So it isn't ideal, it is always better to just use the same brand, but you probably wouldn't notice any differences in wear until you get past year 10 of regularly daily cycling.
@HOBOTECH
@HOBOTECH 6 ай бұрын
Two different sizes will run different voltages as they discharge putting stress on the cells of both batteries. It's never recommended to mix sizes or ages for this reason.
@junkerzn7312
@junkerzn7312 6 ай бұрын
@@HOBOTECH No, they won't. When placed in parallel as long as the internal series count is the same and the chemistry is the same (i.e. same voltage battery), there will be no additional stress on either battery. The current will be split approximately proportionally such that the voltages remain the same as they discharge (or charge). For example, if you parallel a 100Ah and a 200Ah battery together, 1/3 of the current will go to/from the 100Ah battery and 2/3rds from the 200Ah battery. Due to differences in the internal resistance of the cells, an SOC offset will develop between the batteries in the middle of the discharge curve. This offset will be less than 10% and it disappears on either end of the curve (there will be no offset at 0% or 100%). You do normally want to limit charging and discharging currents to the capabilities of the worst battery, of course, just as you have to do with any parallel configuration of two batteries without BMS comms. This means, in general, that it doesn't make sense to parallel hugely different capacities... like 20Ah and 200Ah. But paralleling things like 100Ah vs 200Ah is just fine as long as currents are limited to 100A under normal operation. So paralleling 200Ah with 230Ah is a total non-problem.
