Professor Hobo, I think I could safely speak for a lot of viewers in that we'd love to see you do an early 2023 version of a relatively affordable, DIY lithium battery/solar build and testing those components. Maybe something you could start with 100AH battery, that's expandable from there. You're the best, happy new year!

I bought 2 of these almost a year ago. Paid $1300 each. Got one on a camper and one on a sailboat. Stayed off grid for 2 months in camper running down to zero a few times. Charging at 60 amps with solar and generator. Both batteries doing great. Gonna buy a couple more for connex solar stand alone systems.

Look into used Tesla modules from the Tesla cars, they get removed from salvaged/totaled Tesla cars and sold, you can find them with low mileage (barely used). They are 24 volt though, and they're Li-ion instead of LiFePO4. I think you could use a 24v DC to 12v DC step down converter though. So if 24v wouldn't work for your application, that may be an option if you did want to give the cells a try. $700-1000 on eBay, they're 250 ah but 24 volt, so in 12 volt numbers, they'd actually be 500 ah. 5200 wh capacity compared to the Power Queen 300 AH having 3840 wh, so roughly 35.4% more capacity, for very similar (maybe cheaper) price.

@@jeffsecules184 1) Stick welder machine 2) pure water 3) temperature probe w/ digital on/off display *It's far too much to explain here, but basically the plates need to be renewed by desulfating them with high current, and the water is to replace the water lost to evaporation. The temp probe is used to stop current when the system gets too hot, and then start again when it cools sufficiently to maintain at least 5 minute regen intervals (which depends on ambient temps-too hot and the system temp will rocket up too quickly) until current draws increase without temp spikes. Then it's done.* I use my batteries quite hard/often so I regen every 2 months or so. But most systems will probably only need it once a year. LOOKUP ON KZbin....there are a lot of videos.

These things are interesting though I don't think I'll ever get one. Though with them being cheaper than a server rack buying 4 of these might be in my future. I still like the form factor of a server rack and the communication. I know some of them have bluetooth BMSes so I wonder if they will ever have UART. I see they make server racks for 48V so I guess even they acknowledge this form factor doesn't make sense at 48V. Weirdly they have a 90AH that says is 51.2V and 100AH says its 48V. The difference of 10AH and 10A on the BMS costs 36% more, wow.

@@HOBOTECH but that would be much slower, correct? Comparing charging times with the cigarette lighter (car outlet) or solar panels (which aren’t an option whilst driving and the winter weather), and the length of a drive, you're looking at 13 hours via cigarette lighter vs 4 hours AC. Hypothetically, I’ll be using a 2000w converter for this (not sure if this info is needed), and charging a Jackery 1500, along with a few other power stations. thank you for your insight thus far

I plan to up grade the inverter to 2000 or 3000 but initially would like to upgrade to a 200 or 300 AH lithium battery, did I understand you saying I could just drop a lithium in with my current equipment ?

my setup closely matches yours. I'm in a van with 2 160 watt panels on my roof. I was just wondering myself if this battery is overkill or not. obviously my solar panels will take about a week to fully charge the battery at least that's my guessing estimate. anyways I'll likely call up a solar expert and ask them to do the install for me if they think it's going to work alright. the only mystery i'm left with at the moment is am I spending more money then I need to spend.

I hope someone can help me here. Yesterday I finally got my solar system in order. I got my new battery, Power Queen lithium 12V 300Ah, and it took 15h to get it fully charged and ready. My system is composed of 5x 150Wp solar panels, 3 in parallel to an EpEver Tracer mppt, and 2 other in parallel to an identical mppt. Each come in to their mppt via a 30A automatic fuse. The output of both mppt come together on a bus bar and go from there to the battery and also to a 2500W converter to 12to220V. I have a battery switch on the plus from the battery to the bus bar. Both mppt are set for Lithium. My battery has a 200A BMS with under/over voltage protection. The converter also has protection for over voltage. Over voltage of the BMS is 15V, over voltage of the converter is also fix set at 15V and the mppt is standard 14,8V as over voltage. Now my problem ... The converter goes regularly in over voltage alarm and sometimes total shut off. When a regular alarm occurs the system is shut off for a few seconds, but sometimes it goes into error and then the system shuts off and only can be turned on again by physically turn off the switch on the converter, wait about 30sec and put to switch back to on. But even with a regular alarm, buzzer, the system turns off for a few seconds, meaning that it can be a dangerous situation ... when my pellet stove is on and is cut off when enough pellets are burning, there is no fan for exhaust and I already found myself inside a room full of smoke and fire alarm yelling. Also each time my router turns off and needs to go to a boot up sequence, meaning my internet in down for about 7min. Etc. ... What can I do to make that the voltage stays below the over voltage value ? I first was thinking to put the Victron battery protect module but that would be an overkill and would not help as it would shut down my system as well. Plus I already have protection for over voltage due to the BMS and the converter protections. I had the Juntec battery monitor, 2023 model, but need to return it as it doesn't work, not on my Samsung tablet nor on my iPhone. I ordered the Victron smart shunt and hope to install it tomorrow.

@10:12 , I got confused... I've installed a 220amp altenator for future plans of installing a dc/ac charger around 80amps in between the altenator and battery... I currently have a large gauge wire , maybe 0/1 I forget... ( previously used for a wheelchair lift ) .... Question, can I simply connect this battery to those cables and not have an issue? Will the Altenator / BMS do the rest? Maybe add a second low temp protection device b/c of the 100w solar on the roof I currently have and plan to expand. Edit: The first goal is to run a soft start AC unit long enough to shop for supplies in the Texas heat and not have a panic attack thinking about my DOG DYING In the van. I assume / think this battery will be more than enough for starters and add 1 more later for longer AC uses.

In my opinion, that output test was a failure. If it has a 200 amp BMS, it should not exceed that for nearly as long as it did, let alone double that amount for 5 minutes. I understand it's only a 1.3C output on the cells, but when you consider .2C is the recommended level for long battery life, I really don't believe the BMS is working the way it should.

This is how they all work. They are supposed to allow about double the amps for a period of time. The fact it died at 490A after a few seconds then overheated at 450A shows that the cutoff is working. Watch any of my other battery reviews you'll see the same thing.

@@HOBOTECH - I have watched a bunch of battery reviews, and tested a handful of BMS's myself. A quality BMS will not allow that much output, for that long. A few seconds, sure, but not 5 minutes! A thermal imaging camera on the cables, connectors and battery cells (inside the case) would illustrate why that is a seriously bad thing. If you look at the spec sheet on the actual cells, they state a standard discharge rate of .5C and a max discharge rate of 1C. For this battery, which is built in a 4S-3P configuration, that would be 300 amps. You're drawing between 1.3 and 1.5C, for more than 5 minutes. That is injurious to the cells and is something the BMS "should" prevent. Not being argumentative, just presenting the technical facts.

Just install a 2000W inverter. It will never exceed 200A. Problem solved easily... If I could extract 450A from my 300Ah Zooms I would not do that...

@@Sylvain3342 - At least the inverter would be "smart" enough to shut things down if it exceeded 200A for very long.
