We took a trip to Ireland in 97. Took the ferry across the Irish Sea from S Wales. We docked a short trip from Waterford. When We came off the ferry, my wife ( who was a Sullivan) asked me why I had tears in my eyes. I told her I felt like I had come back home. I didn't score as high of a mark as you Conan, but I'm 80& Irish. All my mother's folks were from Tipperary on both sides. I was told If I could keep my mouth shut, I could easily pass as a native. It was the Texan drawl killed me.

My mother once was in queue for confession, and the priest there was half deaf, senior resident of the perish until his days are over, but still trying to do his best for the people. So, she is there, few more people before her, and the lady in her late 70s, maybe early 80s go in barely walking and she starts confession, you can hear the discussion and priest is asking questions for more details. At some point she said something he misunderstood and loudly said "ZDRADZILA? A ILE RAZY" (cheated? How many times?) in this old Polish style language, it was so loud that 20m perimeter heard that, lady took out and ran (considering how she would walk this was like running) away, and people stared at her, perhaps even with ave (this old, still in the business?). My mother laughed her ass off in the queue, but when she stopped she went to other priest just in case.

Fact: The Choctaw collected donations of $170 (the equivalent of $6,000 today) and sent it to the Irish during the Great Irish Famine in 1847. The Choctaw were one of the nations forced to march during the Trail of Tears. The Irish have since erected a sculpture in Ireland to honor the Choctaw Nation. Look it up.

My Catholic girlfriend told me she and her friends in school would be in line waiting for confession and would be coming up with stories so they didn't let the priest down. They realized later that they would probably all say the same thing, like "I was disrespectful to my parents, and I ate some cookies before dinner." Once they had something to confess, they all clammed up.

Since they mentioned St. Patrick's Day, a little bit of knowledge for any American friends here - it's not "Patty's Day" it's "Paddy's Day" and as an Irishman I am authorised to give you permission to punch anyone who says or types it wrong. 🤣 "Patty" is a woman's name, as any Simpsons watchers will know. Short for Patricia. "Paddy" is used instead of Patrick. Now, you may point out that there's no "D" in Patrick. But there is in Pádraig, which is Patrick in Irish.
