Another thing to point out is the consistent way he uses all the tracks, they’re often used for the same thing every video. We’re finally landing is the intro and during the final major run of the video, where the runner finally achieves the run the whole video has been building to. Wave table is used during montages of runs or clips. This means that long time viewers will know a little bit of what’s coming, which means these track get linked to the emotions of those segments, meaning we start to feel the hype or anticipation from the music alone

I’ve discovered his channel about a month ago. 1. I have no interest in speedrunning. 2. I’ve never actually watched a speedrun. 3. I don’t really play video games anymore except maybe once or twice a year when a new story driven game that I’m interested in comes out. But… My time on KZbin is mostly spent watching documentaries on whatever topic interests me and I like them being a bit longer so there is proper context and nothing needs to be rushed through. And Video games will always have a special way place in my heart due to their importance in my childhood - nostalgia is real! I feel like many of the viewers probably are drawn in by something like: “eh why not check this out - sounds mildly interesting and I’ve always liked video games” and then the music hits and the storytelling keeps you there. What a great channel with an amazing premise and the ability to reach outside the niche which it was targeted towards.

I actually got into vaporwave around 2015-16 but had fallen away from the genre for years before being reintroduced by SS. Although I’m not sure I’d call HOME vaporwave, it’s very cool that his channel popularized the genre as a speedrunning hallmark.

I became familiar with HOME (the goat) through a different youtuber, EckhartsLadder and his intro/outro being Resonance (my second fav song of all time). He is a Star Wars lore youtuber who exploded in popularity leading up to the release of "The Force Awakens" in 2015. His soothing yet thoughtful tone of voice matched the galactically scoped space settings of many of his lore breakdowns which is why Resonance was a perfect intro/outro choice to set up these themes. This song has gone on to accompany drastically different connotations on TikTok and in my own life experience, listening to it on a trip to the Keys which now puts a serene, tropical lens over my personal listening experience. Also, Come Back Down and more recently Sunshower off the album Hold, have been featured as outro songs to SwaggerSouls' youtube vids which gained contemporary popularity with EckhartsLadder's channel despite these two having zero interactions. It's interesting that this taste in synthwave seemingly crept out of the woodwork in the mid-late 2010's all thanks to youtubers with excellent taste. These albums' sounds are so distinctly "internet-y" (also due in part to the close cousin of synthwave; vaporwave's samplings of early internet sounds/aesthetics) so to say which lend themselves to splendidly accompany yt vids. Love ur channel man, just found it from the Rate Your Music vid and loved ur inclusion of Resonance as a bit of your own background music. Also, I stand in defense of Imagine Dragons with you comrade! Looking forward to more vids soon!

I hate to be that person but vaporwave was recognized meme music years before Salt reached notoriety. I would argue Pyrocynical's intros and use of HOME's music was the influential catalyst back in 2015.

nope, Pyro only really used Boardwalk by Whitewoods in 2016, after Leafy had already started using Enjoy Yourself by SAINT PEPSI also used Home's Resonance, Glue70s Casin, Moe Shop's You Look So Good and even tho only Enjoy Yourself is truly vaporwave, all of them are around that same vibe from that time, that retro vibe from genres inspired from vaporwave (edit: by the way im just tryna type in capital letters cuz its mostly typed like this)

I've seen both the rise of Summoning Salt & synthwave (& related micro-genres) over the years. To say that Summoning Salt made it famous would be deceptive, but it sure as heck introduced it to a new wave of internet users w/ a very strong, renewed blend of emotions for them. Neat video.

I think while it’s cool to notice that all the drops are timed perfectly with some big event happening, but it’s not just the drops or the start of the song, but he edits the video to match the song throughout the entire playtime of the song especially when the gameplay and music is all you see the gameplay and music will be synced together perfectly transitioning from one hard moment in a run to another hard moment, which we all know the difficulty of by that point because he spends the time to build up how difficult it is before so you get everything you need from the music and gameplay no words required.

I seem to remember back in 2014-2015 that the whole vaporware thing started to take off, and that style of music (including Home) became popular. I remember hearing Home specifically before I ever watched a summoning salt video. I would see that music in random videos, like in meme videos or kinda like AMV type things. I always just associated it with the vaporware movement since that's how I found them in the first place. And with that in mind, I didn't think that so many people would only ever know these songs just from summoning salt

Good video. I was a fan of speedrunning as well as the artists HOME, Stevia Sphere and Patricia Taxxon before I discovered Salt, and I was blown away when I first watched him. His story-telling and how it’s amplified by the editing and music is just amazing, and was a part in getting me interested in video editing. Your explanation of all of this is also great. I wouldn’t exactly call SynthWave a “famous” genre though, and HOME’s Resonance was a pretty well known way before Salt, but hey, the title is pretty catchy so I can’t really blame you. Also, a cool little fact is that HOME made the albums that feature Resonance and We’re Finally Landing when he was 17, which is cool and also makes me feel a little useless. Anyways, again, good video, and thank you for reading my essay.

Synthwave has gotten much more popular since LeafyIsHere (RIP) got really popular in around 2015-2016. While not all songs were Synthwave, it gave a good taste of the genre and inspired many creators and viewers (including myself), to listen to Synthwave and use it in ways that fit really well. Synthwave was already known before, but maybe not as popular yet. I still listen to Synthwave to this day and I still don't get tired of it

We’re Finally Landing seems like it conveys the feeling of humanity achieving once thought completely impossible and landing on the moon, with this feeling in a nutshell being, “all your effort towards an impossible task have finally been rewarded.” That’s what speedrunning is all about, endlessly grinding for goals and achieving feats that your predecessors years ago thought to be impossible but you were able to break through with sheer determination

Synthwave started gaining traction first around the time Drive came out with kavinsky and a "real human bean", and then the second, even bigger wave of fans appeared with hotline miami with more edgy darksynth, bringing us carpenter brut or perturbator, but also moon or com truise

I think a big thing for me is how inherently nostalgic it feels. By their very nature, Salt’s speed running history vids cover games that have been out for long enough that they are, or at least feel, old, and a lot of the audience has fond memories of playing the games he covers. Combine that with the usual retro sound of the genre and its this cocktail of nostalgia that transports you back in time. Its soothing and relaxing, but also mesmerizing, and its a big reason why his videos feel so good to watch late at night as you’re winding down from your day. I mean this in the best way, i fall asleep watching his vids.

This is a good video but I really think it's hard to attribute summoning salt for being responsible for synthwave or even HOME's popularity. 2016 was the catalyst you had leafy, pyro, many others, electronic gems and artzie music were blowing up, you had the simpsonwave meme coming back, you had frankjavcee using that kinda vibe and talking about it making memes about it for millions of ppl you had the early trap movement really falling in love with synthwave and vaporwave and many artist making rhymes on top of it you had the 2016 hype for blank banshee's "blank banshee 2" which ended up being called MEGA also playing a role

I think something interesting is the multiple matt turk name drops. There are three in particular. The first has a particular song with an imposing intro. As matt turk was the first player to get name dropped in a video title. As the final boss of punch out. So this imposing music makes sense. The second name drop is a complete joke, literally, it's a fake out. But it uses the same music as the first. So we're thinking "Wait, really?" Or "Aw shit, here we go again." The third came from his most recent video, and takes a very different route than the other two, this time, he's a protagonist in the game he's most known for. S.S captured this perfectly, and the music change sells it. Instead of the same music as the last two, we have this feeling like we're encountering a legendary hero years after disappearing. The long time of this music being the only audio with his achievements on screen is what makes this the best moment in any Summoning Salt video ever. If it were to use that same imposing boss theme we connect to him, the whole scene would just make me think "aw shit, here we go again", instead I was captivated in just how incredible matt turk was at punch out. Flawless execution
