In Roland's theme, as it progresses, piano grows chaotic and dissarrayed, progressively more uncertain where its rage should be aimed at; while violin keeps calling to it, helping it to get through the outburst - without opressing it. Violin retells the sorrow it hears back at it, more composed, to help it hold onto theme. In Angela's, over the phases violin's breaking apart over it's own rage and lonelines - piano's there to keep its melody steady, but in background, holding violin still rooted to its senses. Making it look back at its own shape, so it can see its own agression. Both deserve to listen to their sorrow heard and plaed back at them. They cannot help each other. They cannot fix each other's problems, no. But they can *be there* for their friend; stay near as they spill all that wailing, howling despair off their chest. These are not dueling elements, they harbor no hate to each other - only to world that wronged them. Letting all that suffocating hate rampage, until it calms down. These are friends that will acknowledge your problems even if they can't understand how you feel - and kick your arse so you snap out of it when you finish venting.

Spot on in regard to the analysis of what the themes represent, rolands represents his sorrow, guilt, and anger, while angelas represents a literal 1 million years worth of pent up and repressed emotions coming out and lashing out on anyone nearby. In regards to rolands “facelessness”, that’s a “perception-blocking” mask, which helps people not notice him, basically making him be that thing you saw moving in the corner of your eye and you barely or didn’t notice at all because you aren’t focused on it. It also serves a second purpose for character development, it was given to him by his grandma, who taught him how to be a fixer, and told him to never lower it when near anyone, because anyone knowing who you are could bite you back in the future. It also ends up working as a mirror, as in, roland imitates those he gets close to. His grandma made him become a incredible fixer (mercenary police officer basically). His wife later on broke his mask, and consequently broke the metaphorical mask he was hiding behind. In the process, he learns to become a loving husband to his wife. Eventually, he leaves on a job, and returns to his dead wife and the Pianist, which he proceeds to kill using his mask and the gloves that belonged to his wife. After, he did as his mythological namesake, and went on a rampage, innocent and criminals alike dying during it, and many more suffering. At the end, through someone he knew/met he got inside the library, and helped angela, thinking she was behind what created the pianist, which was half true in a way (as far as the characters knew at the point). Angelas need for revenge against her creator, and rolands need for revenge against angela for causing the death of his wife and unborn child. One of the reasons for him not killing her right off the beginning of the game (besides her being basically invulnerable at that point), is that if she found a way to give up on her revenge, then maybe he could have given up on it too, because that’s what he does, he reflects off of everyone close to him, so much so that he can use his wifes weapons to the same level she did, despite only one of them being _his_ actual sword (also named after its mythological namesake, Durandal). So he felt that if angela could find a way to give up on her anger, he could do the same as her. And that’s what happens. Though not before the both of them fight (the librarians do the actual fight, but that’s besides the point somewhat), and in that fight, rolands theme plays again, until you get to phase 4, where gone angels plays, and represents not only his anger and sorrow, but also his regret, as he clearly regrets having to fight against people he genuinely considers his friends now, but he feels lost without his revenge, that if he gives up on it, he will be nothing, as he has lost his wife, what he considers the happiest moments of his life, and giving up on it would be the same as throwing all those moments away, forgetting them, but he doesn’t want to forget them, he doesn’t want to forget her, and yet he doesn’t want to hurt his new friends. He’s conflicted, and eventually loses, and angela realizes how her anger and desire for revenge hurt him, and many others across the game, and decides to give it all up, and bring back everyone they killed. With that, roland also stands back up, and decides to help her by keeping her safe, while the reverberation ensemble comes back to try and stop angela once more. Every part of the story of the game builds up both of these characters, and their eventual conflict, which you can deduce if you pay attention to rolands choice of words in some key moments, and despite the end being basically “screw revenge”, it’s done incredibly well. Both characters had only sought after revenge, but seeing each other suffering, they end up growing as characters themselves, until eventually they do make a choice, when they could kill each other at the end, they decide instead to help each other, and find a new future for themselves, instead of an empty future from a hollow fulfillment from a completed revenge.

Your connection to Roland's theme and Angela's is spot on. This songs play during these "realization" events, where the two main characters, Angela and Roland, have some type of emotion breakdown from what they've learned and what they've done to come to this point. Unsurprisingly, this song is played whenever it's Angela's time to have emotional breakdown. She's represented by the violin, while Roland is represented by the piano, the source of his grief(He REALLY hates pianos for good reason). However, if you get the true ending of the game, you can see that Roland real instrumental representation should be an electric guitar with what he does at the end of the game( rushing to aid all the other librarians during the final encounter). I hope you get to the Reverberation Ensemble some day, and then the Reverberation Ensemble Distorted, where the whole Roland being represented by the electric guitar really comes to play in the game. I don't remember if you brought this up during Roland's theme, but there's a part in the second phase where there's a violin solo, which is almost immediately clashed back by the piano, as if even with Angela reaching out to him she cant reach him. In this song, the electric guitar in the end could be seen as Roland reaching out to Angela, only to be drowned out by his own grief.

So, fun fact about how LoR was being released: it was released in sort of chapters, parts. At first, both Angela and Roland realization themes, and all themes in general, were abridged, and at one point they replaced them with full versions. So, imagine my surprise when phase 1 and 2 changed. And when phase 3’s guitar solo started, I just sat there, listening to it, asking myself HOW LEGAL IS THAT SOLO WTF WHY IS IT SO GOOD-

Really solid predictions, I'm surprised by just how much you could infer from the music. Complete spoilers for Ruina, be very certain that you don't want to play / have already played it before reading: - - - - - - - Angela is a machine. She developed emotions through withstanding a million year cycle of work (long story, see Lobotomy Corporation for context), that lead her to develop hatred for her creator. Ruina begins with her terminating her creator's project right at its conclusion, taking the spoils (called "Light") for herself to build her Library. Her goal is to collect all the Light that got released already, and bring it back to the Library. This Light would let her become a real human, and leave the grounds of L Corp. as a "free" person (human-looking AIs have no rights in the City, as per law). Roland, a human who's wife died as an indirect consequence of Angela terminating her creator's project (long story), is seeking revenge - his wife was the first person he opened up to, had simple happiness with, and was the foundation for his world philosophy. He went on quite the rampage to try and find who was responsible, and eventually ends up in the Library. To confirm whether Angela is his target, he plays along working for her in the Library. Angela gets to learn about the City she was designed to save, hearing the stories of the people and the consequences of her creator's project. Through this, she eventually starts to regret her choice to kill the project - she sees the problem her creator was trying to solve first hand for the first time, and feels like giving up. "Am I doing the right thing" is an incredibly apt description for her arc. Roland sees that Angela, up until the climax of the true ending (the other endings are too sad), is still dead set on carrying out her revenge - sunk cost fallacy, she'd be betraying herself by giving up now, etc.. Roland, therefore, needs her dead to fulfil his own revenge, to give his hatred closure, to "find peace"... But in the end, Angela is willing to give it all up - her freedom, her humanity, her life - to release the Light back into the world, to complete her creator's project and to revive all those who died in the Library on the way to her goal. She tells Roland her intentions, but that she will be vulnerable during this time, and so wants him to just make sure she can complete this mission. Roland, taken completely aback by her willingness to move on from her desire for revenge, finds himself unsure of what to do. He could kill Angela right then and there, while she's vulnerable, and have his "closure". But, inspired by Angela's determination, he protects her, let's her release the Light... and pulls her out of her state of release (uhh... phrasing) just before she can disappear entirely. She's back to being a machine, and the pair and all that remains of the Library are kicked out of the City by the law. Conclusion: Are the two lovers now? Certainly not explicitly, but they do have a LOT of trust for each other - they both move on from their regrets and their hatred, and stay by each others side into the harsh and unforgiving future that may await them outside of the City. Stages of grief? 100% perfect description for Roland. Questioning her actions, but feeling compelled to push forward anyway? Perfect for Angela. The emotions and characterisations you extracted from music alone are remarkable. Roland also lived multiple lives - first as an untrusting, reclusive, masked lone wolf, then as a mostly carefree, loving husband, then as a hate, regret, anger fuelled killing machine, and finally as a introspective, trusting and stable friend. Angela became a person literally, but even after returning to a machine, she retained the humanity learned from the experiences and trials faced in the Library. They both found themselves amidst the shelves (what a stupid cheesy line, don't write that ffs).
@JannetFenix5 ай бұрын
Correction! Angela didn't "develop" emotions, she was created with those emotions from start, as Ayin wanted selfishly something to replace the void Carmen left when she [redacted]. And also it was needed so the plAn worked as it should. There's also certain tragedy in both Angela and Roland learning that their ultimate goals might not be the right thing to do, but they're wayy too deep in by now to just let go; struggling to find the strenght to do the right thing. And when we learn their history, we can actually understand why is it so hard rather than judge them on mistakes they make. And they do too. They have no way of ever understanding "what" the other one feels, the weight of the sorrow and despair and agony the other one bears - but they can see reflectionof each other's struggle, understanding that it is, indeed, absurdally hard to drop something you've devoted so much to, it practically defines your entire existence. Knowing someone else is going through similar deal can give strength. Wanting to save the other from going down the road you went, before you save yourself from dying on it, finding care for another before you find care for yourself. They won't even forget the betrayal, but they're connected by bond of that understanding. They're friends, more connected than any other.
@Torin8675 ай бұрын
@@JannetFenix she theorises that Ayin designed her such that she would develop emotions, but she doesn't experience them right from the start - it was the looping that brought them out of her, so they did develop over time. Quote from the "Urban Nightmare" dialogue in Ruina: "I wasn't exactly born with the capability to feel emotions. It slowly awakened inside me over the monotonous repeats. No, perhaps the truth is that he designed me so my emotions would awaken over time." So the emotions didn't exist at the start - only the seed that would bloom into emotions was there. They only awoke once the Script began looping, as you say, according to the plAn. Otherwise, wholly agree - awesome relationship built on respect and mutual understanding.

While the two realizations represent a mental/emotional break for Angela and Roland, the issue for her is having to come to terms with the past that she cannot change while with Roland it is helping him with his grief. If the theme of the Keter floor is the face they try to show while maintaining a smile, this is the moment when they show their wounds.
