LICENSED NAIL TECH GOES TO THE WORST REVIEWED NAIL SALON IN HER CITY (part 2) *1 STAR*

Here we meet again folks! Yes...I went and got a manicure this time around. And boy oh boy was I not expecting this reaction...okay that's a lie, I was expecting this salon to be just as awful as the last! But this experience was definitely different than my last, so make sure you watch the whole thing and see yet another salon being unsanitary and dirty. And lastly stay tuned for the very end for an important lesson on learning how to educate yourselves on the rules and regulations for salons in the state you live in.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to sneak down in the comments of this video and have a little chat. I'm here to publicly apologize to anyone who watched this video and is offended by my poor choice in the use of the word "ghetto". To be truthful, I did not fully grasp how insulting the word would be to so many. My intentions were never to be or sound hurtful to any race or religion of any kind. The word was used in context being that the establishment was filthy, disorderly, and overall just sloppy. Yes, I should be more aware in my use of the word, and moving forward I will definitely choose against it. But like I said, I didn't mean it to be malicious or ignorant sounding. I truly am very sorry and hope those who read this see my genuineness, and can find a way to forgive me. I have also noticed a few people out there debating about this topic and ultimately being rude, and calling one another awful names. I know we don't live in a perfect world (we all wish right?!) but the internet is a ruthless place. No one is accountable for anything through the cyber world. There is no face to face conversations justifying anything anyone says. So people can say anything (being nice or hurtful) and simply log off and not be mindful of how their words can affect someone else. (My mistake in this video is a perfect example) So with that being said (do the opposite of Nike's slogan) and just DON'T DO IT. In the kind words of Thumper from Bambi, "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all." Let's all try to be kind to one another. KZbin comments are in a way freedom of speech, meaning you can say whatever you like, but that doesn't mean what you're saying is right. (Once again my choice of words as an example lol) Lastly, there was one small topic I just wanted to briefly bring up. Majority of you viewers do not know me personally. You have no idea who may family is, where we come from, how I grew up, nothing. So, just because my skin is fair does not classify me as a "white girl" "preppy white girl" or "white people" My biological father came to the United States as a young child with absolutely nothing in his hands. His history is apart of mine and I PROUDLY identify as a biracial American woman from two amazing loving families of two different cultures and traditions. Again, I greatly apologize for having offended anyone. At the end of the day we are all human. We make mistakes, we each have different experiences and upbringings in life. My amazing mother has always said this world is harsh and painful, but we should be embracing one another instead of continuing to divide ourselves and bring one another down. Good job. I just watched your video and learned a lot. I've gotten a fungus infection from a pedicure so I feel people need to be more aware. I was going to leave a comment to gently explain to you the history of the word but you have already learned it and there's no need to say anything more except that I appreciate the fact that you came out and apologized and explained that you didn't know. Now you do, and you'll do better. Sometimes we hear words and assume we understand how they're used, but sometimes that can have painful results. I also learned this word the hard way. I worked in a 97% rated salon and honestly I would have rated it 50% or less. We weren’t provided with any disinfecting solution and the uv sterilizer was broken. I had to bring my own barbicide for my own tools.

If you dont pay much then youre getting lesser quality products, poorer service and possibly unqualified techs. She wasn't implying that anyone deserves a nail infection at all. Isn't it better to save up some money, get a proper nail tech to do your nails which will not only last longer but will be done safely. The price of a set of nails is so carefully calculated to incorporate all the above. I know which I'd prefer.

This is why I will NEVER cheat on my nail girl. As a cosmetologist in CA I’m all about sanitation as well. She’s incredible and has her own little nail studio. Very clean and has actually helped me grow my natural nails with just hard gel so for the past 4 years everyone asks where I get my acrylics and I say “oooh girl these are my real nails!”

Sanitation is super important, someone could come in with AIDS or something and get cut and where they don’t clean their stuff before using it on other people, if she was to get cut then she could get infected. Regardless of if a manicure is $20 or not they should still be clean. It legit takes 10 mins to properly disinfect your stuff so they would have time between clients to do that. & even if someone came in I’m sure they wouldn’t mind waiting for clean tools & a clean station.

They break the cap and don't prime right, so you'll come back and spend more money. When you go back they'll tell you the primer costs more because its an extra step or extra product. They'll tell you you did something wrong to cause the chipping or pealing. I'm glad you did these 2 videos on proper laws and regulations for sanitary conditions for clients. Maybe if more people were more mindful of the conditions they're exposing themselves to, less of these chop shops will exist. It makes it so hard for creditable shops to make a good name for themselves. People need to remember you get what you pay for.

Rande Thorman I am a licensed nail tech and so I see both sides of the argument. Unfortunately, I think part of it is just that some nail techs are just not as experienced because new products are developed. Obviously there is some trial and error but a lot of people do not educate themselves when these products have been updated. As a result, a lot of people don’t put a primer because they believed that the base coat was a primer. With the breaking of the cap, I don’t think that they were intentionally doing it but were only meaning well. I have gone places to get my nails done and people do this because they are trying to even out their paint job so that the gel doesn’t stick on the cuticles and skin around your fingers. So mostly I think it’s due to these people not being up to date with what they should and shouldn’t do.

@@anntran1970 I'm not a licensed nail tech, but I am a licensed cosmetologist. I know of several shops in my area that I'm truly shocked they're still in operation. Nail fungus out breaks, infection outbreaks, unsanitary conditions, improper licensing, fake/counterfeit licenses, improper application, charging double for the same product just because they have different names, shops still using MMA, list goes on and on. Its scary. I personally got a nail fungus from a shop when I was 18 before I became licensed.

I hate it when the nail techs try to talk you out of something you want. I recently had a lady add pink after I flat out said I like white only better. To her credit, it _did_ turn out prettier than I expected but you just shouldn't do that to customers who are paying you 30+ bucks, or at all, since you're the customer. I used to go to a nail salon that was near my moms flower shop, and they were amazing! They had boxes for each customer/returning customer so everyone had their own set of files and buffers that was for them and them only. I don't think they're in business anymore but I always loved going to them.

Totally agree with you! Why risk anyone else's health?! I've gotten my nails done a total of 6 times in my life. Four out of the six times, I got nail infections after; and yes that's painful! If your not going to out them publicly I get it But at least please report them privately!

This is pretty standard for all of the generic "angel nails" "star nails" etc type places I've ever seen. I go to an actual spa to get my pedicures (they have a separate portable tub which is sanitized every time it is used as are the metal implements they use) instead of being in a row with like 20 other people and loud television on... for 10$ more I am in my own private room with a glass of sangria and relaxing ambient music. Worth the 10$.

I'm so glad u commented and said this! I've not gotten Mani/pedis for very long and I was wondering why some of these places were referred to as "spas" when I've been told about them. Sure don't seem like a spa to me! U described the place I've been goin from the start......loud TV & 20+ chairs lined up. Not relaxing AT ALL to say the least. I'll be searching for an ACTUAL SPA now that I read ur comment. When I have time for ME, I want it to be calming and leave feeling pampered instead of robbed considering I pay WAY HIGHER PRICES than are mentioned in the video. I’m a nail tech in Texas. I once worked at a chop shop where the boss just rinsed off the tools in water, then placed them in the autoclave. The autoclave was never turn on! She just put them there so customers would see them coming out and think they were clean. I walked out after working for a day and a half. I also wanted to comment on what you said on gels needing a primer. Not all brands need a primer. Where I work now, we use Bioseaweed Gel. Loooooooove it! Primer isn’t needed. Most of my regulars get gel and it’ll last anywhere from 2 weeks to 3. And with out a primer. In fact, I got mad at a coworker of mine for using a primer. She is having issues with hers staying (she’s been applying too thick) and when ever one of her guests comes to see me for a removal, it takes forever to come off. I usually have to file it off.

Hi Jenna, I am also a Certified Nail Tech. And much of what you have shown today I could never have put myself through. The first one with the pedicure had me thinking of fungus growing everywhere. The pumice stone, omg. How did you manage to sit through all of it. The nail manicure, was omg over the top bad. I would never have been able to sit through her taking dirty implements and then proceeding to use them. The first thing I learned as a Nail Tech was cleanliness. We sat through classes teaching us about the various fungus that can and will grow on implements, the hazards of nail debris, the very real blood issues, as there are times when a client may bleed due to hangnails or other things wrong, nail biters are the worst for bleeding I have found. And ya, KUDOS Girl, cuzz I would have walked out. And I have also always instructed my clients to do the same, It is their right to demand only new files and to actually witness the disinfecting of the steel items as well. And anyone who ever has sat in my chair has excellent knowledge about the health and welfare of their nails. I hope you also teach your clients about the safety of nail care.

I don't go to nail salons, I went once 40 years ago and once for my daughter's first wedding. I have been doing my own nails for almost 60 years at this point, firstly I never had the spare cash to go for my nails, it was tough enough going to a hair salon twice a year for a haircut. But now I am grateful, I have taught myself well and do an excellent job on my own, and my nails have always been well manicured. Now that I am Diabetic I can't even trust a high end salon with my fingers and toes, I don't slip up and tools are clean..:) Being a nail tech though, you should be giving advise to laymen on how to do it properly instead of randomly picking a low star salon to test. With those bad reviews, why subject yourself to the risk of Infection when you see them using dirty tools?

i have never been to a nail salon in my area (i’ve been to MANY MANY SALONS) that used sanitary or new tools on my nails. the files and boards are always used, and the drills are always used and dusty from nail dust, then used on me. i never knew that this was illegal or THAT bad until i watched your video! now i’m kind of disgusted.. and i wonder if there’s any places where i live that actually follow those laws. this scares me!!

i’m a licensed nail technician in the state of Alaska and the reason we file the nails after the gel polishing process has been done is to remove any strays that has been done by the polish. sometimes gel polish can overlap the nail and it’s sharp. although it does matter which way you file.

This will probably never get seen but: As a former cosmetologist, I commend you in promoting public health. But I'd like to suggest that you speak with the manager or owner of these salons. The nail tech is following what they've been told and they're probably being paid collectively. Plus, their immigrant status may be in danger which makes their economic status even more unstable. I appreciate the fact that you're not trying to come from a place of privilege, but unless you try to improve the salon, it does seem that way. You work in a higher end salon and your clients have the money to pay higher prices. The fact is, these crappy salons are stealing your business. They're nasty, but affordable. And most clients don't realize it. Anyway, I appreciate your enthusiasm.

I neverrr thought to pay attention to the detail you mentioned in these videos!! I'm shocked & revolted at these places using USED tools! That's a serious issue! Infections & diseases are real!! I'm now not so sure the last 2 salons I went to used sanitized tools... & not so sure the pedicure tub was too... I do remember the nail file that was last used on me had white residue! Depending on how long your nails were soaking for also would explain why the polish popped off. Soaking during a manicure isn’t really that great because you’d be surprised how permeable your nail plate is and expands so when it dries they will shrink back causing chipping and peeling.

Dear sweet young lady... you took quite the chance, glad you didn't end up in the hospital. I saw your pedicure tutorial also. I have just started my 42nd year of being a tonsorial artist. I absolutely love this industry. I am from Wisconsin, and spent part of my career as a State Board Examiner. I have had to be beyond reproach. Although I agree with you on the aesthetic part, it is not something that will hurt the public. I would be more concerned with the sanitation and safety part of the service. Here in Wisconsin, if the public realizes that the salon or spa isn't doing what is necessary to protect the public, ( and they probably wouldn't) they can go home and call the state with their concern. At that point the state will send out a State Inspector. When the State Inspector has looked every thing over, they will "write up" the establishment. They will either get a fine, a license suspension or both. Trust me the fines in this area aren't small. I have no idea how they do this in California, but if they have a practice of doing things like back here, If I were you, I would report this to your state Licensing Dept. No one will ever find out who blew the whistle, and you might just save someone from getting a bad infection, going to the hospital or even losing a toe or finger. I am a diabetic, and if an infection were to occur on me, chances are it could kill me. Please, you are a smart lady, with the inside story. The public depends on you to keep them safe. Please do so, and take it further. There is no sense in doing these videos, unless you are going to take it to the end, and keep people safe. Who knows, you could turn out to be someones Hero, and there is nothing better than the feeling you did the right thing.

On average, there are less than 10 inspectors for _thousands_ of salons per state. Some states don't even fund their state boards of cosmetology via state funds. Not to mention that often, state boards are horrendously corrupt, and inspectors do not accurately report salons even though they see clearly what is wrong. The good news is, you might still be able to do something about this! Some states have volunteer chairs on their state boards, and while a PDF of your state's cosmetology laws might seem huge, most of it is really just common sense! If you spend a little time studying up on your state laws, and get a used, recent print Nail Technology textbook from eBay or a similarly priced site, you'll have almost as much knowledge and know-how as a technician (fresh out of school, but a technician no less!), and you can volunteer for your state board! If this video has truly opened your eyes to the health hazards that go unpunished and unnoticed, as a nail tech I would ask that you give it a go and help spread information about salon health and safety in your states. We really do need all the informed help we can get!

I used to get gel mani done every 3 weeks for like 5 years, and the price was already $30+tip 5 years ago in San Francisco, California. I stopped going out to get mani done 2 years ago because it was becoming too expensive (minimum wage here is currently $15/hr, there is no way they will charge you less than $30 buck for a Gel manicure that includes removing the old layer). I bought all the tools from aliexpress (it is a Chinese version of Ebay that ships international for free, and things are super cheap) and over 200 gel mani colors, countless nail charms, glitter powder etc, for approx 700 bucks (those were brought throughout the years). Each color is like $1 - $2, and the quality is superior than OPI. Now, I can enjoy doing my own nails and watch my favorite nail videos on youtube, and most importantly, cut down the expenses. I occasionally sanitize stainless tools though, but the rest are disposable. I think the best is just do it yourself at home.

I went with my sister to get her nails done for prom and she also got a pedicure but I just got a manicure. And the pedicure chairs were stationed next to the nail tech desks. And the nail tech pulled out this old nail file that was literally peeling the material off. So when my sister asked for a new one the nail tech said "No no, I glue it back." And this lady grabbed a bottle of NAIL GLUE and GLUED this piece nack to the file and continued to file the rest of her toenails with it. I about vomited it was so disgusting. So we reported it and these inspectors found MOLD growing in these plastic drawers next to the EXPOSED TOOLS. *bleh*

I am so blessed to live in Oregon. In the town of McMinnville is a nail tech (Exclusively Nails by Jessica). She is amazing! Sanitary, takes her time and does it right, willing to explain her processes. She has inspired me to go to school and become a licensed tech as well. My big sister is a manicurist, she went to school for it here in Missouri. She does an AMAZING job on my nails. Biased opinion maybe. Lol but she's teaching me so that it'll be easier to know what I'm doing when I go to get my license for it. I really enjoyed watching this video and it made me look up laws in Missouri for giving manicures professionally. The last time I went to a salon, the ladies didn't speak a lot of English, which is fine, not a big deal, but I had a problem with a nail brush they used for cleaning the underneath of nails. I didn't want to use it because I didn't know whose nails it had been on and I noticed prior to being seated that she had just did a pedicure on another ladies toes with it. It was my first time in a salon so I didn't even know if you were supposed to use one on your toes. But she wasn't going to go forward with my manicure if I didn't do that. So needless to say, I left dissatisfied and irritated and never tried another salon again. And I won't. I'll go to my big sister or do my own. lol

There are salons out there that do follow the laws. Firstly, those walk-in places are the ones you need to avoid the most. Secondly, If you find a salon that requires an appointment to be booked, look at their online reviews, their Facebook page etc. Don't let this put you off getting your nails done, as I said there are some amazing techs out there!

I remember when I got my nails done they look good but they didn’t cut my cuticles, & I wasn’t satisfy with the shape outcome + it did felt like I was rushed. (I got them done since I was going on vacay to méxico) after spending 3 weeks at méxico I wanted to redo my nails since they were growing out... let me tell you! My family & I live an a small town, the nail salon is run by 1-2 people & I was there for over 2 hours (that didn’t include any wait time) BUT my nails were sooooo good. She cut my cuticles, kept the area clean the nail filer looked new b/c I didn’t see that nail dust & lastly the shape of the nails looked so natural compared to when I had done here in the u.s, where it looked clunky and thick oh boy I wish I could find someone like her😭

just fyi folks, the word "ghetto" specifically indicates a place/situation which is a SHITHOLE. it's dirty, it's broken, it's cramped, it's skeevy, it's dangerous... that's what "ghetto" means. that's why they call it a "ghetto". that's why it's a colloquialism for any environment/situation which is dirty, broken, cramped, skeevy, dangerous... congratulations! you've just learned that people use certain terms based on the fact there is a definition behind them.

P.S. I learned long ago as a nail tech to never let anyone cut my cuticles. There's no need first of all if a cuticle remover is used to soften the overgrowth on the nail plate followed by a gentle pushing back with an orange wood stick or metal implement. Healthy tissue should never be cut as it exists to provide a barrier between the nail bed and the cuticle. It's a built in way to keep bacteria out. Remove that and you're inviting infection and fungus. Our fingertips come into more contact with germs that any other body part, so remove the barrier and invite bacteria and possibly fungus. No thanks.

Honestly this is 90% of my salon experience. I commented on your pedicure video and I did not know all of these things. I stopped going because it was either this or I went to a cleaner place and the service was half assed still.

I got my nails done a week ago, which is something I don’t do often because i prefer to do it all myself. My cuticles were destroyed, my nails were filed crooked, and i got infections on 3 fingers :( then they peeled in 2 days. I’m glad for this video, very informative.

Honey you only need primer if doing a full set or acrylic or gel extensions. Regular gel polish doesn't need this. However 1 you are never soaked in water for a regular gel manicure water makes the nail bed expand the curing process of the gel , actually shrinks the gel a little. So the nail is expanded the gel color is shrinking then when the nail drys out the nail bed shrinks even more. 2 Heavy handed gel application is also a no no the coats have to be just to too thick and they don't cure right. 3 improper curing times different brands cure differently in different lamps uv vs led. 4 If a massage is preformed before polish application the tech MUST use 100% acetone, rubbing alcohol, or CND Scrub Fresh on the nail to remove any and all oil from lotions, oils, soaps, and natural nails. 5 A light buff is really all you need to make it stick right again dust must be removed from the nail before polish application and impurities will cause lifting. PLEASE also do not let them dupe you by saying you are getting a hybrid gel gel is NEVER powder and liquid mixed together that is ACRYLIC P! GEL is just that a ready mixed gel in a pot.

STORM I just saw your comment after I posted mine about the nail soaking. Definitely a no-no. Plus she said she washed her hands which can put oil back onto the nail plate so depending on when she washes that will wreck a manicure’s quality. I think for primer it depends on the brand. Some brands will require the whole nine yards including primer and base and others don’t.

I swear my phone was listening to me talk about my horrible mani and now this video is in my suggestions. It’s like we went to the same salon!! They cut my finger and I was gushing blood being on blood thinners that I mentioned before getting started and now it’s infected with blood mixed in the gel!! Lesson learned, doing my own nails. So much for treating myself!

Great video overall but just a suggestion to just be careful with word choice or word use especially the term ghetto. For me and for some other I have seen it was making me uncomfortable and some might see it as offensive. While I wasn’t offended the connotation around that word is sensitive so just be mindful.

This is why I only go to one nail tech. She knows how I want my nails and I know everything is sanitary. She throws out the buffers when shes done. She keeps one in a separate drawer just for me. I won't ever go to anyone else or to a chain nail salon.

I ALWAYS followed State Board guidelines and sanitation laws. I was extremely anal regarding sanitation. Using a autoclave to sanitize my metal implements, sprayed antimicrobial sanitizer on my entire table and chairs between clients, swept floor around entire table, changed out hand towels, opened up new nail files, block buffers, and grabbed sterilized implements from autoclave before every client. Opening the new files in front of the next client as they were seated. Had them use hand sanitizer prior to me even working on their nails. I included gorgeous hand painted nail art always on the ring fingers, or stamping, holographic glitter or pixie swarovsky crystals included in my gel manicure price. And I only charged $25.00 for a gel mani with ring finger art. And I used a primer prior to applying gel and finished up with using CND solar oil around cuticles. Massaged finger tips with oil, cuticle areas and nail plates. I was certified through CND Master Technician and certified for sanitation and sterilization. So its not always about you get what you pay for. If I was able to post pics of my work you would be shocked I only charged 25.00 by the way their nails looked.

I live in California and I never really realized how many violations nail salons have until I watched this video. Used files, tools, and dusty work spaces. I had no clue this was all a violation. Plus, I've only gone to 4-5 star places. Crazy. They get away with it because customers dont say anything about it.

Thank you so much for this video! It helped having someone who works as a technician explain what they are doing wrong. I majored in public health and interned for the city health department and there were so many violations with my local salon. Like using the same emory board on multiple clients is disgusting when they only cost like 15 cents a piece. Many don't realize this but when they don't sanitize the tools, so say they cut your cuticles, there is a high chance of getting bacteria that can lead to amputation. I think inspectors should go as paying customers and then cite them, cause if they go in just like that as an inspector they try to cover up they're violating regulations
