Lido Shuffle by Boz Scaggs, off his album, Silk Degrees which came out in 1976.
There’s a couple of things I’ve always liked about this song but, I’d have to say, it’s the first 12 bars that sets the hook every time I hear it - bass, drums, and a voice in their purist form. I’ll go out on a limb and say that it was probably played on a Fender Precision (with a pick) - a classic sound that’s so nice to hear all on its own every once and a while.
The bass was played by studio ace, David Hungate. He and a couple other fellows who played on this album, Jeff Porcaro and David Paich, would go on to form the core of the band Toto.
I'm playing the '76 Guild B-301 with the (near) Zero-Mod Thumb-Rest.

Nice work. That's always been a favorite of mine to play as well. Jeff Porcaro's ghost notes on the snare are just so good. You're right, David Hungate did play a P Bass with a pick on this one.

Thanks. I imagine it might be a touch easier to get that "shuffle" thing going with a pick, but I could be wrong. I didn't know that ghost notes could be played on a snare, I'll have to take a closer listen to it. I had a strong idea that it was a picked P-Bass but figured that someone would know better than myself.

I hear (or don't hear) the ghost notes. I don't call them "ghost notes", I call them the things that screw up my timing.
@marccolon5458
@marccolon5458 7 жыл бұрын
TJH3113 Jeff's ghost notes on the snare happen just before + after he hits the backbeat...almost sounds like an echo, but it's all him. He was the king of shuffles. I play 99% of the time with my fingers, but this one just feels/sounds great with a pick. Especially on a Precision. Ah, just read that you heard (or didn't hear) them. Funny, I never consider them something to screw up my time, since the snare is still played where it should be. Just such a great feel, in my opinion.

Nice job Troy I remember many many years ago (when I was learning to play bass my teacher brought me this song to learn even though I'm a metal guy this was a fun song to play. really catchy took me awhile to get it down right but it was worth it and yes I played it with a pick with the up and down strokes in the beginning it's a shame Boz didn't make it even bigger coming out of the Steve Miller band he had alot of raw talent

Lighter strings than I normally use but I’ll give them a try after hearing yours.

Not usually, but for most of my videos, the bass is going through one SansAmp pedal or another.

great playing....none bass related....do you have to clean all the masks??? if so how often? how long does it take?
@TJH3113

Thank you. I do have to clean them, but it doesn’t happen as often as it should. It’s really just a matter of dusting them off. We have a pretty good system. I take the screen out of the window and throw the masks down to someone on the deck wielding a leaf blower. They blow them off, throw them back up, and I put them back in place.

Just curious, Troy: Do you prefer steel or nickelwound strings?
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 7 жыл бұрын
I guess, Nickel, but only because I stumbled upon them. And the fact that they are a bit easier on the frets isn't a bad thing. I've tried Roto-sounds a couple of times and never liked how they sounded, and just as importantly, how they felt.

Thanks for the heads-up Steve. I checked with "Buy Me a Coffee" and they said they had parted ways with PayPal, so I tried going through their suggested vendor, Stripe. I would have pulled the plug on the whole thing, but I put a bit of time into putting the link into a bunch of my most popular videos. If this doesn't flow well, I'll just go back and remove it.
