My husband is disabled, we have had a very loving relationship over 20 years. He is brilliant, funny, loving and my wonderful partner. Labels like "disabled" often cause people to, sadly, look down on people and try and put limits on them. Sometimes people do this anyway, but "labels" make it worse. It its better to say something like "Joe has a disability." You can then say what the disability is and information about the disability. Furthermore, people often associated the word "disabled" with a physical problem that they can tell someone has just by looking at them (i.e. a wheelchair; a cane; a guide dog). There are many kinds of disabilities and they aren't all readily able to be seen by the eye (i.e. autism; seizure disorders).

@@blumberg1982 I appreciate your response to my comment. And I fully agree that being in a wheelchair doesnt automatically make someone an inspiration. Sophia and her family are very privileged to be able to build a fully accessible home, own an adapted vehicle and have access to the best neuro-physio resources from day one of her injury. For the average disabled person, we do not have access to these needs due to the high price of equipment. The financial burden of disability is a huge barrier, and needs more attention from the media. Disability makes us fiercely resilient. Society needs awareness beyond whether or not we are still attractive, loveable, and worthy of respect. We need to talk about ableism in its entirety.
@jamesdavies10703 жыл бұрын
We are lucky but not for those reasons :) In NZ our state insurance company pays for all injury related needs.
@jesseturner94883 жыл бұрын
@@jamesdavies1070 That is a great privilege! Most governments have made significant cuts to disability resources over the years, which leaves people fighting with private insurance companies or fundraising to purchase essential equipment.
