A spinal injury at 17 didn't stop Claire Freeman achieving her dreams of completing a design degree, Masters and now PhD in the powerchair. Despite ticking things off her bucket-list, she was severely depressed. In a bizarre twist of fate, it was a mishap in a routine operation, which forced her to pause and address her issues… nearly two-decades after her car accident.

It comes from within. You can't define beauty. She is an inspiration to many people and gives them hope with her inner radiance which shines bright. She is alive and loves living. Despite her limitations she doesnt allow her disability to totally rule her life. She has come back from the brink and now realises that she can still serve a purpose improving others lives as well as her own.

I am 16 , 6 months back I had a paralysis attack ( quadriplegia) both hands and legs. Later doctors came to know by MRI that I was having incomplete spinal cord injury because infection in my spine. I was not able to move at all. I thought everything is finished but with the help of physiotherapy and having a supportive physiotherapist for 6 months now I can walk with the help of stick and I am trying to walk without any support and indepently. Don't lose your hope and confidence people will judge you anyways but you should stand strong for yourself.

It is and will be very difficult, many times we ask ourselves "what would have happened if... I feel I may be uniquely qualified to relate heavily to the mother. There is absolutely no way to predict the future and crazy things happen. She can't blame herself. Easier said than done. 33 years ago my father owned his own auto shop and salvage yard. He used a trojan loader's bucket to lift the back of a car off the ground so he could cut the rear axle out in preparation to be put in a crusher and crushed. One morning he had me with him like normal and I was riding along with him and he had me stay up in the seat because he didnt want me running around with the car not being safe for a toddler to run around and I remember some things but I guess I started to play like I was impersonating my father as a heavy equipment operator and the hydraulic lever could only be operated one way while the engines are off and as you could guess I played with the wrong lever and dropped the bucket as my father was under the car. My father says he remembers the bucket coming down and jumped under it to try and protect himself and 2000 plus pounds of solid steel layed on him and he heard a loud pop and was instantly paralyzed. I for some reason remember getting out and running to the house yelling my daddy is dead over and over and my mother running down and called emergency services. Although I was far too young to be left in such a dangerous piece of equipment alone Ive always had moments of feeling responsible. Cant help but think my childhood was different from other kids watching kids running around with their father and not doing some things because of a stupid pull of a lever I did as a 2 yr old. I hope she doesnt beat herself up just because something can be prevented doesnt mean we as humans always notice and things happen. We are human after all.

As a mother myself, I fully understand her guilt feeling but accidents do happen. As a working single mother myself, I was tired all the time and I did AMOST fall asleep many times on the wheel with children in the car. So I learned to pull aside and close my eyes for a while and that helped. Please people, stop and pull aside when you feel you need to rest your eyes.

I was in total denial when I first sustained my disability thinking this is just a phrase and everything will go back to normal. Than you approach that low point coming to the realization that I will never get back to normal. But what I defined as "normal" needed... a new definition hence a new outlook on life. I'm still not quite there emotionally but I'm over the moon meeting people whom I would never meet if it wasn't for that event.

I play Benny Hinn's healing prayer utube videos and there is more. People say the spine can't heal but God can fix anything. 🤗😉 Also, I had excruciating neck pain and it vanished while I was reading the Bible out loud one night so definantly do that every day. Pray every day and look up healing scriptures online and quote them. God bless you so much and your spine be right in Jesus' name!

Hi, I'm 74 years old and have been a para for 48 years. You "youngsters" I see on the Net are still inspirational as I think some of the reasons life is different for wheelchair users now is because myself and many others paved the way...In the US anyway. Raised two daughters from infancy as a single parent which gave me the early drive to keep going. I think the hardest part was learning how to live with myself because unless I could do that I couldn't live with others. It certainly wasn't easy and even after 48 years I still have to bite my tongue sometimes and say to myself it just isn't worth it..."Move on". So it's been a series of "moving ons" but with aging it's a very slow move now. Still independent and my daughters grew up to be caring successful people with their own families, and life goes on, albeit slowly now. The world is all yours now, make it even better.

It was really hard for me to listen to Claire's story of thinking of assisted suicide, because my brother, an alcoholic, died by his own hand. Then I fell and herniated a disc in my lower back a few years ago and with it came incredible pain, but I think it is harder for my birth family to accept the hardware I now live with as I see a "tool," not the stigma, so I'm beginning to think that's the difference between my brother and I. We were both disabled in our own way, but I think he had lost hope that things could ever change for the better. I'm grateful that Claire didn't end her life and that she's now feeling confident enough to share her story. And I'm also glad to hear that she is thinking of designing better tools for us to use! Hello Claire, I am watching your "story" and am just absolutely in love with you and your attitude. I needed to watch this story because number 1 it's a wonderful story and 2 I had back surgery 4 years ago that went wrong, I am able to walk a bit but when I do the pain is excruciating and I try to manage pain with turmeric and advil because I became so dependent on Opioids that I couldn't think anymore. I have become so depressed that I seem to sit and watch movies and KZbin. After watching your story I joined a gym close to my apartment and am working out with a goal of walking without a cane or crutches. I want to "Thank You" for the inspiration and the realization that I have a chance to walk and I know you wouldn't just sit around if you had a chance to walk! THANK YOU so much for the inspiration. I'm also a designer, landscape architect.

As a Mom too,I feel so much for your Mom. Even you cannot truly understand her deepest pain. She caused irreparable damage to her child. That is her narrative so her reality. I believe her remaining life is far worse than yours. Glad you stopped resenting her. She cannot bear more pain. I am so glad you made a life and you are beautiful. I pray for your Mom.

From Seaford, Delaware, USA. WOW! Made my 1st comment before finishing video. I'm a nurse working the night shift. Had to check on my baby client. So, I'm back. You have got it together in a real good way. I'm so glad u didn't go thru with the assisted suicide. You have so much to offer. You and ur male companion looked so happy at the end of video. I know God will bless the rest of your journey. 💖💝💜

I suffered a T9 SCI 25 years ago. Your story is so very similar to mine especially when you talk about the mental aspect of the injury. I had such a hard time explaining my feelings because people do not understand your state of mind with an SCI injury. You perfectly described it and it mirrors exactly my own feelings. I went through a really hard divorce because of it. People just want you to move on and forge ahead but if you do not deal with what happened to you it all comes crashing down at some point. For me it was 18 years post injury.

Attitude may I ask a question of you? I have watched several videos of tetraplegics & have watched vlogs so I have a question if you don't mind answering? You seem to get on much better then most tetraplegics especially with your arms and control. Most tetraplegics I've seen don't so does it get better over time? Also I think you are soooo inspirational and the power of forgiveness you have shown & talked about helped me sooo very much!!! I hope you make more videos!! Do you have a KZbin channel?!! Best regards, Victoria ✍🏽🤗

Thank you for sharing this with us. It´s a story of suffering, I was very sad while I was watching your extraordinary video, putting myself in the skin of a beautiful teenager full of dreams, who suddenly sees her life plans truncated and how this situation gets to a point of almost no return and... finally, thanks to God and all the good people that surrounds you, be able to make peaces with all your personal demons and find your well deserved happiness. As you probably know, they have mobility vehicles that are designed for off-pavement use, with much larger tires w/aggressive tread design, higher clearance & electric propulsion geared for situations requiring more torque (snow, mud, steep slopes, stairs, etc. Cheers & best of luck 🌿

Beautiful...inside and out. Claire has a really great taste in fashion. Her work in helping others adjust and to regain as much as independence as possible is really beautiful as well. I hope in the not-so-distant future we can regrow/repair spinal cord injuries. Let's also always always remind our kids to wear their seat-belts. They save lives. I've also at one point or another rushed to what I felt was an important appointment. This story once again reminds all of us that NOTHING is more important than one's health. I currently struggle with one boss at one part-time job. I greatly respect his work ethic. It is his own business after all. However, he also really does not live a healthy lifestyle in part because he allows customers to constantly hassle him. He method of coping is really unhealthy and I am still trying to figure out how to set my own boundaries. I struggled with anxiety and depression for a while and one of the triggers in my case is lack of sleep esp. in the morning. For a long time I thought of myself as lazy and somehow broken because I couldn't really function in the morning before 9am. At this point though I have come to accept that I am not broken. I simply function differently. One thing I am trying to figure out now is how to operate in this world being the way I am. I am considering becoming a mental health counselor. This would allow me to help others and also allow me to set my own hours. It is still a work in progress now. Claire's work in making wheelchairs and the needed accessories "sexy" and organic is truly inspiring. Art informs science and vice versa. Claire is a great example of this. There is similar work being done for functional prosthetics which also looks amazing. Taking cues from anime series for example.
