I should read this. My great-grandfather and the James brothers were first-cousins. Their mothers were sisters.

Here's something funny about the word books. Books is backwards as Skoob, with a k. Scooby-Doo.

The war in the West was entirely different in character from that in the East . Short shrift is given to such things as the hanging of Jesse's father-- which left him practically brain-dead, or the prison collapse of the prison in Kansas City were women and girls were held in captivity. That led to the attack on Lawrence, which at the time was openly known as a garrison for Jim Lane's red-leg marauders. Jim Lane was a major target of the raiders, and survived by fleeing and hiding in a nearby cornfield. It's not mentioned that Frank enrolled in the Confederate army and fought in the battle of Wilson's Creek before returning to join Quantrill. I don't think he did that so that he could rob banks. Recall that the Union hero of that battle, Nathaniel Lyon, was martyred by a confederate bullet. What you seldom hear is that Lyon , 10 years prior, had slaughtered nearly 100 defenseless Native Americans at Clear Lake, California. That might give you a hint of the Federal commands mind-set. Ewing's "General Order #11" put the icing on the cake; truly those men knew their business. Not so far away in the Twin Lakes region of Western Tennessee and Kentucky lived another Confederate traitor, Jim Hinson. He became a relentless and feared sniper and scout after the summary execution and beheading of his two sons by a Union Officer. Yes that happened. So given a little knowledge of these events a different picture begins to emerge of the fighting in that region. One begins to understand: justice demanded the harried people of Missourri, Tennessee and Kentucky strike back. That's the context in which you must judge the James Brothers.

So right, there are two sides to every coin. The 'Story of Cole Younger', in his own words, bears out what you say. Much of what these so called outlaws did was arguably a justified response to the atrocities that brought them about. For far too long the narrative has been controlled by only one side of many historical events. How people who call themselves patriotic and/or Christian can conduct themselves in such a manner is astounding. Mans history is more aptly defined as mans inhumanity to man.

I agree I thought it awful convenient how they left out how badly they beat Jesse and what they did to his stepdad that left the Everlasting impression on young Jessie and I don't believe he killed any women or children or just don't believe that.... the victors will write history the losers will be the vanquished these are words ring true again

Sonia whoever wrote the book downplayed the ass whooping that the Yankees put on Jessie when he was a boy and how they're damn near killed his stepfather they beat him half to death and the author acts like he just whooping with a belt and send him on his way. Also I believe his first wound was a shot to the chest which damn near killed in I'm done with this book

It was written more than 100 years ago while James was still alive. The "accurate" story we know or think we know wasn't yet ironed out.

This dude took a lot of liberty by putting words in their mouths. Also , at least twice the author mentions men that had taken terrible oaths to keep a location or other things quiet. I can't help but wounder what could be so terrible about it. I don't get it. Does anyone have an example of this kind of oath?

You dont the oath? Well, you are young. Granpa used to tell me, an Old Chicksaw, Goes by the name of Huantiwa. The oath goes like this' If 'er I see em coats in blues, Their head or My heads will roll. And if I fail, lemme fail in trying, or if they fail, they fail withouth em heads. So shall i slay the last of them, or yey they will see the last of me' the meaning i forgot.
