Today I want to share with you everything about my life as a highly sensitive person. From what it is, to what helps me in my daily life, to how I deal with society and how I make the best out of what I now consider to be an amazing gift.
Before I start it is important for me to say that I am not a professional and that this video is based on my personal life experience. Some facts are from Dr. Elaine Arons book: The Highly Sensitive Person, that also coined this term.
Only 15-20% of the population can be categorized as highly sensitive people. HSP tend to have increased sensitivity to stimulation, like big crowds, bright lights, loud noises and aggressive commercials. They tend to notice subtleties and experience life in a deeper more reflective way. It's like seeing the picture in high definition, but not only the physical things but also other people's emotions, energies, and complex unspoken situations. This can lead to HSP being easily overwhelmed and tired.
HSP have a rich inner life and tend to be more introverted, shy and quiet. Yet that is not always the case, for example, as a child I was very outgoing and even overconfident - I felt that is what society expected from me. But as the years went by and I did not pay attention to my emotions, I pushed myself too hard to be perfect all the time and developed anxiety and clinical depression, something I have dealt with for years.
Life as a HSP can be hard especially is you are not aware of your sensitivity, but there are also many benefits: Like being very emphatic and compassionate, being moved deeply by music, art, and nature, the ability to have a deep connection with yourself and others and experiencing life in a very spiritual way (Of course all of these qualities are not restricted only for HSP!).
Here are a couple things that help me to live as a highly sensitive person:
1. First of all and this is the most important thing there is: understand that being highly sensitive is a real thing, in Dr. Arons book she shares many studies done on many different species, that show that this in a tendency that you are born with. Learn to accept it, and to respect yourself as you are.
2. Alone time - this is a big one. Most HSP need time alone to unwind. No matter what your living situation is, try creating a space that recharges you.
3. HSP are very much affected by the condition of their body, mind, and involvement, being overwhelmed easily by hunger, tiredness, stress and stimulation. So I am here to give you the official ok to be EXTRA with your self-care! Carry water and food with you, make sleep a priority and of course find time to just relax.
4. Plan ahead and try to making situations that might be hard for you - easier. It's perfectly fine to take things easy!
5. Learn to say no - it's ok not to do everything everyone does. At first, you might feel like a downer, but trust me once you feel well rested you will enjoy your time with people much more.
6. Let the people in your life know, I personally gave this book to many of my friends and talked about it with my family.
Something that's important to note here is that there is a fine balance between being a hermit and getting out there. Many HSP hardly leave the house and I must say I am guilty of that myself! I work from home and I can stay here for a week straight without even noticing, that's why I consciously pay attention to situations where I need to push myself and get out of my comfort zone. It's a learning curve and even if you get to a point of physical exhaustion or feeling emotionally drained, remember: this too shall pass. It takes time to find your personal balance, what people are right for you and what situations, flexibility is key.
These days I see my high sensitivity as a true gift. Being emphatic, noticing fine details and experiencing extreme emotions have become what I have to give to the world instead of a burden. I see my emotions as my inner guides, a way to learn what is right for me and what is wrong, and hot to build a life out of my heart. We might be a minority, but the gentle ways of the highly sensitive person are much needed, as they serve as a bridge to communicate the many things in life that cannot be explained, but only felt.

@Shir Levi Thank you for sharing this information! I'm just becoming aware that I have this trait as an adult. Do u think this is only genetic or can it be developed as a result of childhood trauma? I was the scape-goat child growing up in an abusive family. I wonder if trauma/environment can exacerbate being an highly sensitive adult?

When you are highly sensitive you also know immediately if a person dislikes you or is a negative person. They might not have a reason, but it can cause anxiety being around them...crowds with lots of these people are draining.

^ The problem is that those people can dislike me too (basically ignore their own philosophies). It's often also because of my erratic nature. The worst and most nonsensical part is that it's usually bigots that treat me nicely, ugh :/ But I agree, most have that calm aura where you know they'll never harm or look down on you

I am very observant & selective of people that I am around . And can feel negative energy from a person even if I just met them. 🙅🏽‍♀️Yes ! I’m very shy and I hate being around huge crowds of people it makes me very nervous . I am just aware of my surroundings & I’m very empathetic I can feel for others and sometimes it becomes overwhelming .So I’m learning to really take care of myself and have alone time . I love being alone and having peace to myself . I’m learning to come out of my shell more and be more outgoing I’m going to find a balance . ❤️

As an extremely sensitive person I recommend you to just look at the sky when you feel overwhelmed while walking down in the street , I always need this to calm myself down and avoid people walking here and there infront of me which is mostly really tiring , and last but not least just check by yourself , people forget to look up and give themselves a little break from the tensing moments of everyday life :) be the one to enjoy amazing views of the sky . Much love ❤❤❤

I did the quiz and had a score of 25. As a guy it's tough to be highly sensitive, simply because I can't and won't live up to the image of what a man should be in our society. I cry a lot, I care way too much about things I can't controll and I have such a vivid imagination that it sometimes makes me loose touch with reality. I see auras around people most of the times, I see shadows in the dark that move around and sometimes I get lost in feelings/emotions of other people. It is tough, but it's a gift that I try to use as well.

Bro! I have the same thing. I suffer from anxiety and depression. Ive had to learn to except myself. Amd at most its a great thing sometimes. But its hard for me to eat at a restaurant or go to the mall or amusement park. Because i read everyones emotions. And im very sensitive to the crazy environments to the point i want to be secluded in my own room. But what frustrates me the most is when i cant explain it good enough to others that dont have this. So others tend to get mad at me or irritated. Because i can become angry or irritated fast. And i get twitchy and sometimes sweaty. Its an insane feeling. I hate it when it becomes out of control but love it when i can control it. Im prescribed xanax to help me calm down from the fast paced world. Im 31 and am still trying to figure out how to deal with it. And control the urges to not become so easily irritated or angry. And such simple things like the lights are to bright or theres loud or annoying noises or alot of people talking at once can set it off. Im glad im not the only one with this. We can all learn from eachother.

I'm sixteen years old and have been labeled as 'sensitive' my whole life. I have had many downs in this small amount of time. Being called a crybaby because I cried easily. People telling me I get to influenced by other people and how they feel. I have always considered myself a people pleaser. I think they didn't really notice that I was a highly sensitive person because I'm everything but shy. I'm what they call a HSS, a high sensation seeker. They figured it out when I went to an acupucturist, who told me that she could feel my emotions running through my body like an open book. Sound very poetic, doesn't it? Being a sensitive person also made me respond very easily to treatments and antibiotics. Although sometimes still thinking it is a trait that doesn't always help me, it feels amazing to get to know yourself better. It feels amazing to know why you respond the way you do. Why I cry more than my classmates. Why someone who walks past me, can change my whole day. my whole mood. Being a HSP may not be the easiest thing in the world. But it does make me feel gifted even if not everyone can see it. :)

Yes! I wish more people (or I should say more of my friends and family) understand this. I always wondered why I often felt overwhelmed and drained when I go to crowded places even if it's just minutes within entering a shopping centre, I thought it was my vision/sensitivity to bright lights and for a while, I even assumed it was my lack of iron that made me feel that way. It made me feel like I wasn't really present, like I was being pulled in so many different directions. Too many times, I've been called a hermit/anti social because I didn't want to go to a social event.. but at the same time, I still want to be invited and not forgotten. I've struggled with my personality my whole life, feeling like a misfit and unable to connect with others but now I feel so much more at peace, happy and living in the present -this is mainly due to working on myself for more than 10 years (learning how to appear normal, communicate with others etc) and because I now have a beautiful, happy baby girl who keeps me centred :) I've also learned how to cut out the toxic people in my life.. but I am still a work in progress and always will be. Love your channel so much, you are truly a beautiful and unique soul. You are the kind of friend I look for, I wish there were more like you. My test score is 26 but I already knew that I'm highly sensitive. Sending you love from Australia 💕

I'm 30 years old, and have always known that I"m highly sensitive, but I didn't know it was a real thing, if that makes sense. I feel validated, and hopeful that I can learn techniques to help me cope. Seeing how accepting you are of yourself makes me feel like it's okay to accept the things about myself which I see as weak. I already do some of the things you mentioned, but I am very much looking forward to reading the book. Shir Levi Throughout my life people around me have been attacking me for being too sensitive. And as result I have developed depression as only 14 old girl. Now I am adult and ok with just being with myself. It is the pressure of society that we all should be social and extroverted. But without introverts world woud fall apart because introverts are the ones who make change because they have genial idea. Anyway,it still huts when people are cruel to me. I do not know if this is something that I as a hyper sensitive person can overcome as it is in my nature that everything matters to me so much.....

You might be straight up empath rather just than HSP. They're very similar, we share traits and you can be both, but empaths also tend to be more energy-driven and intuitive vs mainly triggered by sensitivity to stimulation or a sensitive nervous system. Empaths may strongly sense their environment, often sense people's (or even sometimes an animal's) emotional or physical symptoms, and we tend to absorb it.

I scored 19, I knew I always had sensitivity issues even from a child even up to today and it's difficult trying to explain to your family that being sensitive is something that probably cannot drastically change,and they get upset and tell me to be strong but it's not that easy to force yourself to be something that you're not. I think my sensitivity comes more from social environments and interacting but that's probably social anxiety(which I have lol) Also being overly sensitive is quite annoying for example someone could say something to me in maybe a harsh or a strange gesture that can be maybe be a little rude and I will think about it the whole day or cry about it lol. Seeing this video gave me hope that I can cope being this way, thank you

I got a 24... it's hard to separate HSP from being neurotic because I have my fair share of trauma. Classic CBT techniques and talk therapy don't seem to work - I know my patterns and beliefs, but that doesn't change anything. I couldn't yet find a way to function in society and be independent without bulldozing myself, and authenticity is real hard and I don't think I would talk about being HSP face to face with someone because I don't want to be the special snowflake.

I'm so glad I watched your video, I had never heard of highly sensitive people before! I scored a 25. I had always thought I had some kind of learning deficincy or something, I can not listen to music or talking and do anything else. My friends in high school would listed to music when they did their homework but I had to have total silence, even then I was easily distracted. I get easily distracted or annoyed by light, sound and temperature. I jokingly tell people that I have dog ears because I seem to hear things no one else can. I can not be in large crowds of people, especially if it's very sunny and warm, I can have a panic attack or get angry from being over stimulated. I'm also very empathetic to others especially animals, and often am plagued by sad, horrible or depressing repeated thoughts. I am happiest when I am alone with my animals

I scored 24, no surprise because I have known for many, many years that I am highly sensitive. During my younger years I was told by many that I was "too sensitive" which was very damaging to a young girl... like something was wrong with me. As I have grown in years, I realize that this sensitivity is like a super power of sorts and I use it to enhance my life! Thank you 💕

I often feel weird because I don't need so much stimulation and social context as others. This leads to people getting to know me much slower compared to others. People also often feel like I am not interested in them, but this is mostly not the case. I enjoy meeting people but I also need so much time to myself and most people do not understand. It is quite sad actually and makes life harder.. :-( Love this clip :-)

Laila Manja Messerschmidt I actually like when people are social with me, the hardest part for me is the beginning, how do you socialize, how do you just become really close with someone when you don't know them. What do you talk about? But at the same time I enjoy my alone time, I need my alone time! It's very contradicting.

polkadotsla If someone interests you in a situation where you can get to know them, you can just ask basic questions that interest you. I am the kind of person, I often interested in the motivations of people, their family background e.t.c. I ask these kind of question during a conversation. Don't be afraid to converse about things that interest YOU and don't be afraid to put people off. If you are deeper then others and they do not approve of the way YOU like to converse, then don't. The right people will crystallise out of conversing with a few. Be happy about the people that drop out, as the right ones will then stand out. If you then feel like being a lone again, just say so. You can say, I have to go home now, because I have to cook, clean, sleep, don't feel well, what ever, but you yourself control how long the interaction goes and when YOU need to be alone again. The closeness, just comes naturally by spending time with people over a longer time period. Also, over this time period you will also know for yourself if YOU want be closer with specific people or not. If you do, then you can take action. So, it is all about YOU. How much time do YOU want to spend and with whom do you want to spend it with. You are free to put the pieces where you want. Hope this helps.

Because that 80-85% of the population grew up having fucked up things happening to them that balanced them out. Some of the most amazing people I've met come from a horrible past and because of their life experiences their able to relate and understand a person when they are in pain because of their situation and circumstances. This is something the sensitive person has no understanding of. Sensitive people were sheltered their whole lives, protected from the outside world and when they enter the world they run and hide from the very things that are designed to balance them out. It's not good, the ones who never learn, well.. You hear about them on the news all the time.

You Are Not Ready Hello, I’m a HSP and I have experienced, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. A lot of HSP have experienced trauma, and since we are HSP we have experienced it even more deeply. I think it’s a shame that you generalized HSP as just not equipped for the world? Furthermore Who is? Lol... Also individuals who are sheltered with HSP or the 80 - 85% of the population have a whole other psychology to why they function the way they do. Be more intuitive, there’s a lot resources online. No reason to generalize :)
@pearljean
@pearljean 5 жыл бұрын
@@deadcell1 you seem to generalize HSPs so easily. I get overwelmed whenever I hear negative words or insults.. when I was a child, i experienced mental and physical abuse by my mother. So whenever i see similar experiences I had around, I get easily emotional and understand what they must have gone through... and I even get sick sometimes. Having much experiences as a person who lived in asian and western cultures, there are a lot of times i do seem to understand many situations as well. Also, probably, my major in anthropology, psychology and cultural studies has influenced me to understand more deeply.

oh yes. finally I realized my empathy was a strength. Here is an example: I started volunteering at the pet center where I used to cry whenever I went in the store. Now I am helping those cats and only sometimes I cry. Mostly it's a glorious gift working with others who care deeply to save many animals each week month and year. I also became a pet sitter in my spare time to give more love and found I was monetarily compensated in return as well. A good energy exchange.

Kim, I'm the same about the high, uncomfortable levels of energy. I thought I was claustrophobic for awhile (maybe I am lol). My grounding for this is getting in nature, somewhere with wide open spaces. The only place I can fully get rid of the edge and can tune into different frequencies, re-energize. Weird but true!
@EMFMiner
@EMFMiner 7 жыл бұрын
Highly sensitive people are strongly advised to avoid electromagnetic frequencies from wireless, power lines and house wiring. Using ethernet instead of Wifi, airplane mode your phone as much as possible, and most importantly, turn off the circuit breaker to your bedroom at night. These steps (and others) will help so much!

Wow, I will try and do this! Thank you for these tips! I was always one to keep my phone away from me during the night. I know many of us sleep with our phones under our pillows or next to us on the side table drawers. Now it is time that I go back to this!
@EMFMiner
@EMFMiner 7 жыл бұрын
The Simple Life it's okay to have your phone near your bed while you are sleeping as long as it's in airplane mode (make sure 3G/4G/Wifi/bluetooth are all off). That way you can still use it for an alarm, listen to music, read an ebook, etc. But if you need to leave it on (like if you're a doctor or EMT on call), distance will help, as well as leaving it in a place where it has the most bars (fewer bars means the phone boosts its power).

I try very hard to be 'normal' like other people but sadly its just not me... if i do it, its just me faking it. That was so tiring. I also can feel negative vibes and being with negative people makes me sick, stress and depress. I can read people effectively just by seeing their gesture and facial expression even if its a stranger. I also very sensitive to bright sun light (always curtain down in the mid morning) and loud TV. I always mute my TV during commercial break. I dont know why. But its bother me and make me cant concentrate to other things like talking, or reading. I love animal... cause their love is unconditional love. Love to help people but hate to be around argumentative and negative person... Glad to know that im not alone having this personality... Love myself but sometime hate it when most people can't understand me

Shir, thank you for opening my door of understanding and acceptance of myself. It's very difficult being a highly sensitive person on many levels. Even as a child my mother would tell me of all her ten children I was most in sync with her. At the age of two my dad left my mom and abandoned the relations. My mom could not cry but I would. I would cry and cry in would only express my deep sadness inside. This is where it started for me. Later daily activities would leave even drained with dealing with the public. My mother would always wonder why I tired so easily. Unfortunately after studying to become an elementary teacher, I had to let that go. I would feel overwhelmed and experience too many anxieties. My relationship with God is a strong and meaningful one and with His help He lead me to the perfect job for me that I truly love. My opportunity to extend myself to people is limited with my current job. Again thank you for giving me new vocabulary to understanding myself.

Thank you Shir! I discovered this book almost twenty years ago when I was teaching in Portugal. It was so eye-opening to discover that I am a highly sensitive person and a handful of my students were as well. I have recommended this book so much over the years and am deeply grateful for you sharing your personal experience. My biggest challenge now is how to best care for myself in the highly public and social life I experience on a daily basis. How to find that alone time, to stay healthy and to create healthy boundaries without being defensive. I am highly sensitive and compassionate but after too much of my boundaries being pushed and too much stimuli, I get fed up! I welcome the anger and even rage, for I know it is giving me energy, motivation to continue to move forward to create a life that is more conducive to the highly sensitive being I am. Many Blessings.

I came across this video in the spring of 2017. It started my conscious awakening Journey. In 2013 I came across the term highly sensitive person and everything made sense. I continued to ignore that side of myself though. This year, my life changed. Your video catapulted it all. After your video I found Ralph Smarts "How to know you're an Empath" video and my life has forever been changed. Thank you Shir. Your knowledge echoes in ways you don't know about. ❤

Thanks so much for this! I scored 100% on the quiz a while back. Discovering I was a HSP made so much sense of my entire life! It explained my strong sensitivities to bright light, to sound (misophonia included), to smell (I can smell pasta when it is al dente from 2 rooms away), to texture. I feel like my senses have been in overdrive my whole life. Not only that, I pick up on everyone's intentions and energies, and a room full of hostile energy will send me into a panic and force me to leave. I am always exhausted. I work from home with 2 small children and barely have time to myself. When they sleep however, I love retreating to my bedroom for quiet time. Funny part of it all is that I am an extrovert (ENFJ). It would be so amazing to meet fellow HSPs like me!

I believe I am. I took the quiz and it came out as I was in fact a HSP... I noticed this over the last few years, reading stories online, pictures, animal cruelty, bright lights, shouting, horrible shows on TV, the news even... all caused me overwhelming anxiety and even some things causes terrible depression... I want to be able to fix all the terrible things... Also peoples moods I can tune into so easily... without even speaking I know their mood... I am struggling with this.. the stress of not being able to help all these people/animals in need makes me so sad, like I am failing everyone.

I was actually diagnosed with hyper sensitive nerve disorder (hyper sensitive person) a few months ago by my doctor. That explained soooooo many health problems I had over the years! The best thing she said I can do to help my disorder is meditation and yoga. The world can be a very overwhelming place for people like us....thank you for sharing this video with the world.

I had no idea about HSP. But it describes my life experience perfectly, from high sensitivity to noise, smells, textures, to anxiety and depression, to being very empathetic and intuitive. I wonder if all INFJs are also HSP? (I took the test and got a 26). Thank you Shir!

I literally clicked every single one of them. I had seen an article about "how to tell if you're an empath" & that's what brought me to this video. I've always known I was a highly sensitive person but, I didn't realize how much it really affects my life, for the better & worse. So thank you so much, not only for this video, but providing the quiz. Love, love , love the energy you give off. Keep doin your thang girl ! :)

I scored 24.Thankyou for posting on KZbin. I always knew something was wrong with me as I'm always stressed and became sensitive if people yelled at me or gave me a hard time. Being a HSP is a gift.My intuition is always 100% on.I can spot a lier a mile off.And I also think being empathic is a good quality.

All you need is awareness of Self. Your abilities are just natural abilities we all have but most people are more constricted in awareness. Most ppl would be shocked at what i've experienced since birth. They don't understand the natural self. Balance is very important for everyone. Please don't think you are somehow more special or gifted than others, that is just another ego ploy which creates more imbalance in the world. Understanding your self means understanding equality. How else would you have compassion if you think your somehow more special than others. Everyone's special, so no no one is. That's balance. That's equality. Peace.

I don't think she means she is more special than others. But highly sensitive persons often pull themselves down when they notice they can't do or handle things the way others can or the way society tells us to. That's why it is very important for these people to accept who they are in order to take care of themselves propperly and to enjoy life. When they do this they might come to see their sensitivities as gift instead of a burden. again this doesn't mean other people aren't gifted. We are all the same but all different.
@Mystique7
@Mystique7 7 жыл бұрын
I didn't mean her specifically. I meant ANYONE who thinks they are "gifted" because they are empaths. It isn't a "gift" it is how you and everyone else is. Naturally. It is a human being thing to be an empath. It isn't "superhuman" or any of those other words ppl use to describe it. It is how the natural human being functions when they understand who they are and what it means to be human. Because we have been taught to not trust and love ourselves, once we finally heal ourselves we come into the recognition of equality. It is the same for everyone. We are all humans.

I don't really get your point. No one is telling anyone that high sensitive persons are more special than others. Of course all people are equal but that doesn't mean some people are or feel different. Again most highly sensitive persons tend to see their emotions as a negative quality rather than a positive one. Because western societies often speak of being 'too emotional' in a negative way. So it is really needed that people speak up for highly sensitive people. That doesn't make them egocentric (most highly sensitive persons aren't egocentric anyway). That also doesn't make them more special than others... Actually what that does is making them equal with others who don't get easily overwhelmed or tired from emotions and don't get limited in their daily lives because of it. I'd rather say to everyone that he/she is special to boost their confidence than to say you're just like everybody else. We're all equal but we're still unique.
@Mystique7
@Mystique7 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is exactly what im saying. EVERYONE is AMAZING. Not just the empath. EVERYONE. But there are some empaths who "think" they are somehow the special ones. That is EGO. Which everyone also has. The perspective is one of wholeness. Wholeness is complete. Wholeness recognizes itself as EQUAL not SPECIAL. Everyone is special because everyone is EQUAL. So really there is no one more special than another. I hope you understand that. Love & Infinite Blessings to you! ♥

No one was being egotistical here. By your original comment its like your saying that high sensitivity is not a unique gift when you said it's just a "natural ability that we all have". That's like saying the gift of a really talented basketball player, or a really talented singer, are "just natural abilities that we all have". But like the gift of a highly sensitive person, that statement is not true. Our unique gifts are not gifts that "we all have" because clearly most people don't have the gift of high sensitivity, great athletics or a beautiful voice. Your comment made it seem like high sensitivity is just run of the mill, everyone has it - which is untrue. We are all gifted and special in our own ways, but be careful not to write off other people's gifts as if they aren't unique to each and every person.

We didn't know where my son got the sensitive gene and now I feel it maybe me. Thanks for your support and explanation. We want the best for our son and want to protect him from the negative outside world as possible.

Thank you so much for making this a topic in your video because for the longest time I thought I’m just really weird that would never be normal or ever fit in and think others thought the same thing for as long as they have known me. On the that test, I found the answer to why I always feel like crying when someone says something negative about me, why I notice or feel things more intimately than most. This has truly been an eye opener. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

i scored 15, I am diagnosed with depression and i might also have BPD, noise always sets me off. i hate it so much but i love music. also a messy room annoys me although i used to never be a tidy person when i was younger. minimalism helps. but i havent fond a solution for outside noise other than noise cancelling headphones. btw youre so beautiful.

Thank you for sharing this. I am also a highly sensitive person. This week my husband asked me to go to a Iron Maiden concert with him and my stepdaughter. I said no hesitantly and with great guilt. I just know I can't take loud noise, lights and crowds. I know I would have been miserable. I could tell he was very disappointed. I explain to him how much I am affected by all this stimuli, bit I think that because he is completely opposite of me, and has never known anyone like me it is hard for him to understand. Even if he does not say how he feels about it, I can just feel it. I have to be careful how much I apologize. My ex use to call me Sensitive to a detriment, and was very mean about it, and really expected me to change. One of the reasons he is my ex!

yeah, i wear earplugs whenever i leave my room because there are just too many painfully loud sounds around, when i take a shower, when i'm in the kitchen with clanging dishes, around musical instruments, when i'm around roads with cars driving by, when the vacuum is running, any other loud appliance, etc., and i always keep earplugs with me wherever i go when i leave the house
