Hello everyone and welcome to Homestead Tessie. Today we are going to talk about the subject of living below the poverty line. I am not a financial Guru nor do I have any education in finances. But there's one thing I do know and that is what life was like living on a low income and below the poverty line. I lived this way for many years and I have years of wisdom, advice and encouragement for everyone. I am going to be sharing that wisdom with everyone and how we got out of massive amounts of debt not by the help of the government nor the help of anyone but ourselves here is the beginning of our story and the beginning of our journey about sharing extreme frugal living, low income and how to survive and find joy in it all

When my husband was forced to retire due to his health, it brought us closer because we work together on everything to survive on income that was half of what we made before retirement. But we are happy, have a roof over our heads, food in the frig and a warm bed. What more could you need? The Lord is always there for us and that's a promise.

I’ve spent much of my adult life below the poverty line and nearly all the rest of the time I was “lower class.” I only moved my way up to lower middle class for about a year. I think frugality is a fun challenge and I’ve gotten really good at it. I think even if you have money frugality is fun and important.

I remember when I was growing up. We had all kinds of outdoor adventures. We played in the river, climbed trees, built forts, and rode bikes. I never felt like I was missing out. We hit rough times when I had kids, but they always had everything they needed. We made up games and got through tuff times. Thank you for sharing your experiences ❤❤😊

Hi Tessie! If you’ve never had anything, you don’t realize what you’re missing. I think because of having things vs not having much is a mindset too. It hurts worse when you’ve had it and then lose it. That’s why I say it’s the simple things in life that’s important. Family, friends and time together is worth more than any amount of money. Have a blessed night everyone!

I grew up in a small farming community and we were fortunate to either be able to work in the fields and get paid pretty good plus plenty of potatoes or whatever crop you’re working in, or the farmers would leave potatoes and onions on the edges of the fields for who ever needed them. It was hard, dirty work but your family would have full bellies and extra money for winter. Plus hunters from all over would come and hunt and they would give the ducks away to whoever was around. My mom worked at the grocery store so we got lots of ducks and I didn’t like the taste but you didn’t argue back in those days lol. Just mentioning these things for ideas where folks might get some food when in need.😊

Tessie, I'd love to see more videos on how to live at or below the poverty line. My husband and I are living on one income at the moment. I am unable to work, however, I hope I can get myself together enough in the future to at least have a part time job. We have food stamps, but unfortunately it is only enough for one person. It is very difficult to get it to stretch the way we need it to. We also get food from the food pantry when I don't have any food stamps left, but it is hard to make anything with the food they give us. We don't have an oven because we live in a motel, and the only things we have to cook with is our skillet and microwave. Do you have any advice on how we can get creative with the food that we do get from the pantry, and do you have any advice on how to make the food stamp money last longer? We really are barely surviving. It's hard for us to make rent every other week (on top of our other expenses), but we don't have a choice. Believe it or not, this was the cheapest option for us for the time being. We were living in a travel trailer for quite some time, but it started to fall apart, and we didn't have the means in order to fix it. Also, the to rent a space at an RV park is a joke. It gets expensive quite quickly. I want to sell it because it's just another debt we owe on, but my husband wants it as a backup in case something were to happen. I totally understand his point of view, but it is making money even tighter. I am beyond stressed and feel so bad for my husband who beats himself up time and time again because he feels like he isn't doing enough. This experience has brought us closer together though, and I am so grateful for that. We work together and talk about what needs to be paid and what we can do without. We support each other when things get a little too overwhelming and one of us feels like falling apart. I love your videos Tessie, and I'm so glad you share your experiences with us. I'm sorry for such a long comment, I guess there was just a lot on my mind. Sending hugs and warm wishes to you and your family.

Search resale shops for a toaster oven and a crockpot it will make cooking more versatile. Google recipes with the items you have on hand. Mom always shopped the quick sale meats and dented can section. Spring will be here soon. Maybe you can grow a few things like leaf lettuce, radishes etc. Soon mushrooms and berries will be out. Mom and I went to the park regularly and picked black berries off bushes. Dad would get morels and fish when he wasn't working. Mom and I went curb shopping a lot on garage day, we recycled cans and she would pick stuff up, clean it up and sell it. It's crazy what folks throw away. If you are seniors check out your counties senior center for assistance. Blessings

I loved this video Tessie. What an inspiring story. I must say that you and Ken have a remarkable relationship to have gone through this and yet stay close to the finish line. Most relationships would not have made it! My parents spoke of the similarities as how they lived their lives after getting married. They wanted to build a house and pay it off in 7 years. They accomplished their goal, but stilled lived below their means so that they would always have a cushion for a rainy day. Those rainy days did come but they never stayed. My parent's did not own a credit card and always paid for things with cash. They preached this into my sibblings and myself and it stayed with us and we are now living the same way. But, I like it. It is so comfortable and a secure feeling when you lay your head down at night. Thank you for sharing Tessie you are so accomplished in so many ways. I admire your grit and determination you had and that you kept your mindset of making lemonaid out of lemons.

We are of the same mindset. We are trying to fix up the house we are in now and we are trying to save and pay as we go. It’s hard to change the mentality of being super frugal, but I think that’s ok. Why spend money for things you don’t need, spending money you don’t have. ❤❤❤❤

Good morning, Tessie. You and Kenny are an example of how to do marriage-as a team, no matter what. So much is uncertain right now, in our country and in the world; inflation is still an issue, people are facing job loss or pay cuts, and many are having to come to grips with a new way of living. You've got so much insight and knowledge, and I think people really need to learn what you have to share, now more than ever. Along with that, your mindset and perspective is one of being "content in all circumstances", and in our consumer-driven culture, learning to be content is something that is also needed! I'm looking forward to learning even more from you. I can testify that, since our financial situation changed drastically three years ago, implementing what I learned from you has made all the difference. ❤

This is a excellent video! So close to our story too… we lost our home and everything in 2008 when our excavation and manufacturing homes business went under. Yes, we learn valuable lessons though the tough times that’s for sure.

I live on SSD and just above poverty line but you can’t tell me I’m not below poverty level bc it sure feels like it. This is why I’m frugal out of necessity. Btw, finally saw ur Walmart video. You have a really good hubby and cute too Lol. So glad he came on camera!

I've learned so much from you....yes, it's important to focus on the small things in life. I love all your tips, too. With the way prices are today, everyone can benefit from scaling down and trying to save money where we can. Thanks Tessie!

I totally understand this. My husband was laid off in 2017 at the age of 56. We lost 2/3 of our income. Fortunately we knew it was coming and paid off any debt we had at the time made changes to improve our budget. Became more frugal in every way we could. Today he is 63 drawing SS and I still work, my income has not gone up much at all int he last 7 years and with inflation the way it is we get by. There is not much money left over for much of anything except emergencies. Also with inflation my job is not giving us any kind of COLA allowance just a measly 3% merit increase. That really won't make a difference. So needless to say we have become more frugal. We are warm, have plenty of food and are content and happy and that is all that matters.

Dear Tessie, I'm having a hard time reconciling the idea of you having an in-ground swimming pool with the people you and Ken are, or the lives we see you living now. I just can't picture you guys lounging around such a pool. But anyway, I like you guys better in your present reality. Way more believable. And relatable! 😉

I was binge watching some of your old videos. I watched one from Nov. 11 where you said you were getting rid of your wish list. I was surprised to see you are asking your viewers for potting soil and gardening supplies.

Thank you so much for your very important question back when I had the wish list before it was for frivolous things things that I wanted that not necessarily things I really could use, Potting soil is something I really need and it's very expensive if I had to buy it all myself. I have no problem with asking for something that is a needed item if somebody would like to help me out in that manner I no longer have my paypal or ask for donations
