Last fall I bought a large canvas from Michael’s. I bought some paint (make sure the paint color goes with your color pallet), brought it home and let my kids paint whatever they want on it. Then I told them we were going to frame it and hang it above the sofa. They were so happy that I framed and hung their artwork. I got an inexpensive art piece that blends well with my fall color pallet that is sentimental and my kids feel special bc I hung their art work. Win! Win!

I've never even thought of using paper towels in my bathroom. If you wash your hands thoroughly, you don't need to worry about COVID germs getting on your hand towels. I do recommend that you have multiples of each your towel sets per person. One set hanging in the bathroom, one set in the wash, and at least one or two more sets in the linen closet/cabinet so you never run out or are caught in a bind. Learned that from my mother. Same with sheet sets. 3 sets for each person.

Hi Kiva, Great video! Thanks! In my powder room, I have a brass washstand and one towel ring. I have paper napkins in a brass holder, and one hand towel in the ring for everyday use. When I have company, however, I change out the paper napkins for washcloths, folded and stacked in a small brass basket that sits on the counter. A matching fingertip towel hangs in the ring. A second, larger brass basket sits under the washstand with a washcloth hanging over its edge, suggesting its purpose. A guest can take a washcloth to dry their hands and toss it in the basket under the washstand. Those who feel more comfortable with a reusable towel can reach for the towel ring. The towels are hunter green and match my wall tiles. Visitors are impressed!

Love these videos! And yes, PLEASE, give us more tips on lamps and lighting! Not only more on the types of bulbs we need to be using, but also the size and scale of the lamps themselves, how and when to incorporate a floor lamp so it adds to the room, and ESPECIALLY some tips on choosing the correct style and SIZE of lampshade to work with your base. Sometimes when we use unique or vintage lamps we need to come up with the shade separately and it's so easy to get the wrong size. Is there some rule(s) on proportion of lamp base vs shade? THANK YOU for always having the best ideas and explaining them in ways we can easily understand!

When my granddaughter was tiny barely crawling, she wanted to touch my two foot little statue of a glamorous lady. I just said to her mind or be gentle with “nana’s lady”. I’d always let her go near it (after much training) and she’d gently touch it, as she knew that was ok. It was so cute to see her be careful. I’m amazed that she’s 4 now and still calls it “Nana’s lady”.

I’m a lighting designer and find many people get lighting wrong so I’m sure a video there on would be useful to most. Just one thing I would like to point out though - whilst I also prefer warmer light its something that is also affected by the climate. I find in very warm climates people tend to gravitate towards cooler colours - so Dubai for instance uses a lot of cool white aka 4000K. These environments are not what westerners classically think of as cosy. No one is putting out throws, candles and blankets when it’s +40’C outside. So maybe linking lighting colour to region is more appropriate than using ‘sterile’ as that may be an offensive term to some who do utilise these cooler colours.
@alajnabiya2 жыл бұрын
I never thought of climate being a reason for the difference so thanks for that perspective! As an American that's lived in the middle east most of my adult life, I had wondered why there was such a clear preference for white lights here and yellow in the US. And lots if Americans I know hate all the bright white lights here and are very critical and tbh judgemental. And people from here wonder how Americans stand having such dimly lit rooms. I bought an LED fixture once and the man in the shop pointed out that it was a "yellow" light and apologized for having run out of the white ones. Personally, I've grown accustomed to the bright, white lights and on a recent trip to the US I found myself searching for every light switch in my sisters home and still being dissatisfied with the light. To each his own. 🤷♀️
@vaderladyl2 жыл бұрын
I noticed most American homes lack in good lighting as if they don't choose the proper lumen or kelvin temperature amount for the space. I think the lack of proper lighting can be remedied when you pick the right amount of lumen, independently of kelvin(warm or cool). Also depends if you want task lighting or ambiance lighting. i happen to found the middle between too bright and too dim because I choose the proper lumen amount and the proper amount of kelvin temperature to make the space bright enough without having too much cool lighting that can be associated with ugly office lighting here in the US.

The correct lightbulbs make a huge difference for me. Not too yellow or too blue. We have an open concept living/kitchen/dining area and all the bulbs have to be similar or it will drive me nuts 😆 But I’m also the person who at my previous home had to have all the outside trim the same color as the inside trim, so there’s that lol.

Could you talk about blinds like zebra blinds? You mostly just touch base on curtains. Please also touch base on of blinds and pair with curtains and how to do it? And yes would highly appreciate a lighting video!!! Love your videos!
@RagingCanuck2 жыл бұрын
I had white zebra blinds made and installed for all my windows in our new custom build, except for the large windows in my formal rooms and principle bedroom, over which I hung sheers. The blinds sit inside their window frames. They are fantastic! Open, they let in lots of light while providing privacy. Closed, they are opaque. Because they are fabric, they look far more luxurious than traditional blinds. Since they are unobtrusive, I am able to add full-length curtains or roman blinds over them, thereby adhering to Kiva’s rule to layer window coverings. They provide consistency to the exterior facade of our house, regardless of whatever other window coverings I might install inside, over them. And, unlike Silhouette blinds, which I used previously, the slats of zebra blinds won’t get grotty because they are vertical, not horizontal, thus dust and dirt don’t accumulate on them. For greater privacy, zebra blinds with attached roller blinds are also available, but, in my opinion, unnecessary. I highly recommend them..

Thank you Kiva! Your advice is priceless! Yes, please on lighting video! On lighting some not-very-well-shaped rooms. My townhouse-style apartment is bit dark. To make it worse, I have almost no lighting. Very long bedroom, no ceiling light. Small dining area has some generic chandelier right in the middle, while the only way we have space to walk around is to have the dining table off to the wall. Living room has a big rectangular skylight which is positioned 1/3 off the ceiling from one side and 3/4 from the other. Fireplace in the corner supposed to have a track lighting pointing at it. But when renovating, someone moved that about a foot to the side, so now it is off center of the fireplace, and also too small for the space. On top of that the ceiling is "vaulted" (in reality, slanted down to just 7'). For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to make the space not looking like a cave every evening, in which spot exactly to hang a chandelier if it is possible at all. Thank you! All the best!

Wait, people use paper napkins or towels in the bathrooms? I don’t really even understand that. Fortunately, since we are doing a new build, we are getting to buy all the appliances at the same time. We have gotten everything, from the large things like the fridge right down to the microwave and coffee maker in black stainless steel. I really do like the cohesiveness of it. We settled on that because my husband liked stainless steel and I preferred black appliances, so this was our compromise!

I have 2 hand drying options in my bathroom. 1) White Bounty napkins resting in a pretty glass vase thingy on the counter. I like Bounty napkins because the plain white appearance makes them look sleek enough and since they're Bounty, they're strong, and also not expensive. 2) Decorative hand towel hanging up that people can use. I do not believe in having pretty hand towels only for display. I change out the hand towel everyday. I keep the spares in the cabinet under the sink.

Quilts are my secret weapon for kids rooms! I actually use them as my kids 'fitted sheet' because they stay tucked in really well. My kids sleep on top of the quilt with a nice comforter. I get a beautiful neutral quilt & swap out the comforter as their rooms change. I keep a sheet on the bed just in case they're ever extra chilly. It makes for more independent kiddos too because it's easier for them to make their bed. Plus they never really look wrinkled like sheets do!

My parents just renovated their home and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on much needed repairs and improvements. However, they used 5000k temp bulbs everywhere and it’s 🤢 I’m sticking to 3000k for our condo renovation and 2700k for more ambient lighting, all dimmable. Makes a huge difference in setting the tone for a home. I also invested in custom artwork for our dining area where I collected coffee bags I’ve tried from 2021 and made a big collage with them and had it custom framed and matted. It’s a bit colorful but is a statement piece when you walk into the home and see it in the dining area. I think it will really make the place pop!

I felt very proud of this easy and inexpensive project. However, a week later one of the mirrors came off the wall and shattered into thousand pieces. Learning lesson: make sure the mirror is properly glued or attached to the wall before installing the frames. My mirrors seem to be the original ones from when my house was built and they were coming loose which I overlooked when working on my project. Also any of our family members could have been hurt if in the bathroom when the mirror collapsed. As K says safety comes first!
