We're making an ecosphere from the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels Texas. This river is full of life and was a great place to make a closed ecosystem.

I know the universal eco jar rule is to never open these jars. But it you cut a small apple chunk and put it in there, all the snails and scuds will devour it.

I can identify hydra, mayfly nymphs,bladder snails, freshwater scuds and a possible rabbit snail

@@jarplanet i think it was the black one with gold spots. according to most books they are only found in sulawesi so it might be a different type

I put excessive blanket algae and didnt realize how many snails it had, it’s starting to smell like chicken, and just in general bad. What do i do? I removed 60% of the algae and removed some snails

If things aren’t going well, It may be worth starting over and just trying again. No shame in that! I’ve had lots of failed ecospheres.

@@jarplanet can algae alone be a oxygenator for the ecosphere? I heard it takes oxygen, is it more good then bad or vice versa

Most types of algae produce oxygen during the day time. At night, algae consumes oxygen but usually less than was produced during the day.

My 3 year old ecosphere only has algae as the primary producer and is still going strong.
