We lived in County Kerry for 2.5 years and renovated a 1950's bungalow and loved the Irish people, so warm friendly and inviting. We rented a bungalow for 6 months while we had fitted a septic tank, no existing as WC went to river and river water to flush it from tank in loft. New updated electric supply and a group water scheme connected. Prior to that renovated in France. First place lived in a 4 berth 14ft caravan. Caravan £350 in the UK. Caravan was free on the ferry at the time. Lived in it for 5 months while renovating a small cottage. Had electric, once switched back on and wired in new consumer unit. Large extension to caravan hook up as well as sky freeview TV! Took wardbrobe out to fit small multifuel stove. Very cosy once fitted. Don't suppose the insulation is great in a static. Had friends who returned from France to the UK and bought a new static home and even spending £60 a week on LPG gas a week still not warm. If your static is bought may pay to add some more insulation to the ceiling or clad over the roof to get a decent insulation layer.
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the message. Yes, I can imagine that without insulation, gas would be very costly. Sam is cladding & insulating the static. The diesel heater is working a treat in the back, and hopefully, we will soon be removing the expensive & useless gas fire in the lounge for a log burner. Hopefully, these modifications will mean we stay warm & dry this winter. ☘️🤞

Having woken up with a wet duvet, windows, clothes etc in a 1960s house, back wall had moisture running down it. Have lived in very cold houses since, but not that damp again. The log burner will soon dry out the caravan, find some dry wood, the English have a habit of burning WET WOOD, which all it does is smolder.

There is nothing simple or easy about life in this place, the work never ends, the sun disappears in August, and won’t be seen again until June. We moved from NY to a derelict schoolhouse in Leitrim 8 years ago. That feeling of “O shit - we’ve made a horrible mistake?” - yup, The first summer we were here, the sun never shone, and I wore the same wool coat from July to July - woke up cold and desperate for nearly a year. Yes, that’s been our lives for almost 20 years. The cold outer skin acts as a condenser, then that drips onto your ceilings, making them cold, so condensation forms there too. If that’s typical fibre board, it will become waterlogged and deform. Not to mention the mould that will grow. I battled with all of that, non stop, during the last 19 winters and I know it’s not fun. If you can keep the outer skin dry, that will help a lot. If you can keep the cold wind off it as well, I believe that will solve the problem and enable you to keep your heat in, keep the dehumidifier within its capacity and avoid the walls and ceiling’s becoming an ecosystem of their own. You’re start out better prepared than I did and you don’t have some other stuff that we had going on, which I’ll tell you about some day, not in a public forum. I think you’ve got this. Avoiding the utility bills will be key. It’s not much fun in the cold and wet, but that’s only a few months, less in a good year, and the the spring comes, the swallows return, the crows fight you for access to your chimney, the grass starts to grow and the livestock is back in the fields again. Then you have the whole summer stretching ahead of you and there’s nothing you can’t do. Put the effort into getting over the first hiccup and it will be better, I promise. Finally, for what it’s worth, the early cold snap is unusual and the weather we have right now is much more typical of this time of year. Rain will make the aluminium walls cold, so it’s colder inside than out, so getting the “big umbrella “ built would be my advice, first. I never managed that and it led to us having the fire on when we were comfortable walking around outside without a coat.

Deck chair island 🤣 It's now been safely extracted without incident, thankfully. Yes Sam is bike mad but will be a while before he owns one again. He had to sell them before we went travelling. So, I'm looking forward to this log burner. I have high expectations now! 🤣❤️

@theirishhomestead opps Sam, you're now Dan. I'm having a blonde day 🤣 I've a few videos up on my channel of our joint bike and my old trike. I fully understand the selling up. I did the same but hope to build another trike soon. My last one saved my life ( another story you'll find on my channel if you're interested lovely) Oh and it's a must to have a stove top kettle when you've the log burner 💜x

Wow! we have a gas heater in our but have not yet used / tested it. we use some electric heaters and i bought us all sherpa hoodies from amazon basics. and some wooly socks. I do feel you pain, for us both its going to be a chilly winter! We have one room in the house with a fire, walls and floor and the room in general still in bits, but nice to have a fire somewhere, and a firepit outside too! Oh and I'm trying to talk clare into a hot tub... last year (just before we moved) I got a great one from slovakia for pretty cheap. Will ease sore muscles and make you too hot even in the cold weather, wood fired 🤟
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Omg I love the hot tub idea! Not sure we have the funds or the power for it though Wood firedones look great, though however not cheap! Maybe I'll full the water tank and do some cold water dips...that way the static will feel a million times warmer! 🤣
@WestCorkWander Жыл бұрын
I did suggest that on cottageology, pool paint or rubber liner and you'd be off to the races ;) Clare is saying the same regarding funds, our backup is an old cast iron bath and a fire underneath. The way I look at it, the more uncomfortable we are in the caravan, the more wonderful it will be to get back indoors. So many people go from house to house, the rare appreciate it as much as one living in discomfort will.... my kids dont buy that btw 🤣
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
@WestCorkWander to be fair, you're really doing amazing. Kids and a small space plus trying to work! I think I'd have lost the plot! We could have done the touring caravan thing, but we had to give the kids their own bedrooms, or there would have been murder! The mobile is doing us well and once the log burner is in, we will be grand. Have you thought of a diesel heater? They are fabulous and not too expensive plus cheap to run & low energy output. I didn't see the comment was from you on the fb page! I'm still undecided on that and Sam has a different opinion than me! Never good! 🙄 I'm hoping for a fireplace next to the static after Sam's finished the cladding & decking. Anyway, keep up the amazing work, guys. You will soon be moved in! 👍

You should try reaching out to the generator or powerbank suppliers or companies to see if they would be willing to sponsor or gift something to help with cost.
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
We have been offered some sponsorship deals, but nothing has been set in stone yet! I don't want to be doing cringe ads! I already struggle with putting so much of ourselves out there for scrutiny and not so nice comments. I know sponsorships will draw more negativity, which I'm not sure I'm cut out for. 🫣

Need to block the cold air from under the caravan. Hay bales would work for example

We have had a few people suggesting this. I'm going to see if we can get hold of some as it's a great idea and much cheaper than insulation! 👍

Wow Becky, excellent job you and Ewan did cleaning the water tank. Ewan is such a great help! The kittens are so adorable. Is it Jasper that has the classic tabby markings? They are all so huggable but I favor the classic tabby kitten. I could watch Kitten TV all day! Then when you get your chickens, it will be Chicken TV. They are amusing to watch as well.

Thank you so much, I couldn't have done it without him. I was a broken woman that evening 🤣. So that is actually Felix. He is the most friendliest, Onyx is also pretty friendly but Jasper the other tabby with the spotted style markings is standoffish unless you're sat on the sofa and he's tired, then he will come to me and sit on my lap. ❤️🐈🐈🐈⬛

Consider. As a possibility pulling the siding off the caravan and spray foaming all walls and putting siding back on. Neighbour of mine building their house has a like for like caravan as yours and just did this. He's cladding it in timber though expects to be in the place for a year or two so he's made the decision to foam it.

@theirishhomestead not faint of heart I suppose but a real solid option for airtightness and an excellent r value in a space like this. Beats the old fibre fill they stick in hands down.
