Well done folks you got a lot done , after Debi left her trail of destruction. Scary stuff.The static will be so much more warm and comfy. When it's fully framed in. Hopefully you will have no more flexing walls after that. Fingers crossed we get no more big storms like that again for the rest of the winter. Glad you're all safe. Love seeing the kittens getting up to mischief outside. ❤.

Hello, I recently found your Irish Homestead videos so I am catching up on them and I am just now watching this one. I have Irish in my blood and I have always been interested in what it's like to live there. I like watching the work being done and all of the improvements your family has made to your Irish Homestead property. There is a lot of hard work to be done and it is facinating, for sure! Question tho...didn't you know that storm Debi was coming? I live here in SW Louisiana, USA and we know when a storm/hurricane is coming at least a week in advance and we know to bring everything inside and/or secure anything left outside to prevent it from being blown away or damaged. I was wondering about that...I guess you will be watching and better prepared for the next storm, right? 🤷‍♀️ I wanted to mention that I REALLY enjoyed the parts when the video is sped up and we see actual work being done instead of yall just telling us about it afterwards. That is so interesting to actually see it, in my opinion. I understand you guys are out there and probably feel like you need someone to talk to (which is understandable, of course) but I am here to see the work being done and less interested in all the talking. Maybe we can get some videos where you just set the camera down and film the actual work being done and leave most of the talking for some other videos? Please don't take what I am saying as rude or unkind, I certainly do not intend for it to be that way. I just had a couple of questions/suggestions and it is your page and ultimately totally up to you how you do your videos... So, I love the kitties and I can't wait to see what other animals you get and to see all of the progress you make on your Irish Homestead. I am sure it feels good to have a home base in such a beautiful area. I personally love the cold and dark rainy weather, so I'm sure I would love it there. 🙂 Anyway, I hope you sell that vehicle soon so yall can get started on the house and get that finished where you can truly feel settled. It's going to be beautiful! Good luck, I'll be watching! 😉

Thanks for that. Hopefully if you have watched all the videos after you will see we start to do more work less chat. That being said some people like the chat so we try to balance it out. Plus without the chat we get tonnes of questions! The storm was worse than predicted. Yes we knew it was coming but hit harder than the forecasters thought it would.

not at all, chicken wire and pallets are perfect. Nothing in the countryside is ratproof, that's why we have kitty kats! The roof looks fab, another week or so it will be done. Good job getting the trampoline back, years ago mine had to be retrieved from my neighbours kitchen window. That was an embarrassing and awkward 20 minutes £££. One of the first thing your very kind husband said was 'That other people in the area might need help'. I know things seem difficult right now but I hope the appreciatiation and love I can see in the comments, helps you hang in there.@@theirishhomestead

I throw my compost directly on the garden area, summer or winter. People laugh at me, but it disappears into the ground within a few weeks, seems to add nourishment, and I don't have to shovel it into a wheelbarrow later.

Good progress on the roof. Glad that it wasn't a stronger storm. Nice to see you all getting on with it. My Grandparents bought a remote cottage in Herefordshire in the 90's up a mile long track with no services except a phone line strung along the hedge. Me and my twin Sister aged 10 lived with our 60 year old Grandparents and moved to the Cottage on the Hill. We bought a Subaru Bratt 4x4 pickup and later a 1600 & 1800cc Subaru. 4x4 estate. We camped in the cottage, sink unit out the front. Had a grant for Kitchen, bedroom and bathroom 2 story block extension. Cottage was limestone. Waited a year for wayleaves/ permissions for electricity, transformer over 2 fields, wood, orchard and up our garden. In meantime using dreadfully unreliable Lister 14kva generator that took 3x 4wd to get it up there! Water was a borehole 273feet by a chap called Mr Morgan. Electricity finally connected after a year and 8k cost! 1600CC Subaru builders burnt out the clutch and Grandparents skint and it was scrapped. Used the 1800cc one with hi/lo ratio and builders hired a 4x4 thwaites dump truck. As an 11-15 year old it was a fantastic place to live with wild deer, sheep, badgers, foxes, red kite. Could walk for hours and not see anyone. hill fort, Fishpool valley and lime kilns. All owned by the lady of the Manor. There is a derelict tin roofed stone cottage further up the track and would love to buy it but falling down. No idea who owns it but expect price to be around 200k so unaffordable. We lived there for 4 years and when sold had to pay a proportion of the grant back.. Bought for 30k, sold for 85k. The people we sold it to still own and live there and love it. Moved from such remoteness to a grade 2 listed double fronted Georgian townhouse in Harborne Birmingham. Then Porthleven, Cornwall. Near Villedieu-Les-Poeles, France,. County Kerry and now back to the UK. I live on a narrowboat.

Wow! That was some storm! Glad everything's almost back to normal - such is life on the land!! Re: your compost bin - best to take out the flooring and have it sitting directly on the ground so that the contents are connected with the soil life below. Pretty sure there's plenty of worms in your soil - in winter they retreat deep down into their burrows where the soil is warmer and drier. Once the weather's better, if you want to encourage more soil life, just mulch the surface of your ground - leaves, straw, compost - pretty much anything that was once a plant - the worms, fungi and microbes will deal with it as soon as it starts to break down, and feed the soil. Best of luck!

I know how devasting it is to see your work torn up in just one nights storm. But...now you know what to plan for in your future. Storms like that don't come often. But now you know just how strong you need to build things. To prevent future damage. These things are always a learning situation. Bad as they seem. The trampolines are usually the first to fly. Turn them upside down for storms and put something very heavy on top and chain to a tree.😊

I’m delighted that dodgy lintel is down. Those give no warning before letting go and, unlike brick/block walls, rubble walls keep falling until there’s nothing left to fall. All that stone you shifted could decide it wants to come down just as one of you is stepping through the doorway underneath it. Having it gone is a huge relief. Some people insist you should replace them with wooden ones again, because that will accommodate the movement in the rubble walls, but I think I prefer a reinforced concrete one, when I see what’s sitting on it and how easily it moves, if the lintel gives way. I’m probably going to install a reinforced concrete beam around my whole house, at wall plate level, too. That’ll give me a familiar base to build the roof on. Great progress, despite the setback. Well done.

Well I have to say well done Sam, you have a wonderful fire for all the family to keep warm and not damp anymore and now after the major storm you haven’t given up either of you. You have carried on with the roof and your new compost bin. Great stuff guys. I really hope you don’t get too many of these dreadful storms that can come our way. Keep strong and keep going. Much love 🥰🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Good job. Even if it seems insignificant, you should film more of your processes, i think people love to see all the little steps in the journey. A year from now you can do a time-lapse of your progress. The compost bin can be lined with cardboard from packaging, or pick it up from stores who are glad to be rid of it. It insulates and makes stuff break down faster. And since you get tonnes of rain, use a pallet to make a lid - you don't want sodden compost. You should plan steps: your woodstore is needed, then make a shelter where all your supplies will be dry, so when you have the cash you can buy in bulk to get better prices. And maybe sometime you can do a meitheal - group of friends to do a big work day. And film everything. You'll get more views - and more much income needed from KZbin. Good luck

Thank you Clare. Some great advice there. We sometimes forget to film, I think it's because it's still so new to us! The cardboard suggestion is great. In fact I hope to do the no dig beds with cardboard next year. 👍

That was a bit of a blow.. Regarding worms, yeah, I have the same on my farmhouse in co Mayo. hardly any worms. I don't bother with contructing compost bins anymore. These pallets rot in 1 year. I just located a good place out of sight and keep dumping it there. It turns into compost just like that. And, yeah, it is the place where the worms are.

I don't know if you have considered it but a skirt around the static would be beneficial as it stops the draft beneath the floor. I've seen this done with insulation board but OSB would work also to block the flow of air.

There wil be mouse and rats so not to close to where you live and you do smel a compost heap

Just binge-watched your having just come across your channel. You've certainly got serious job on there. I wish you luck. On the matter of the ivy it does not feed off the trees but uses them for support. If left unchecked the ivy grows to the tree top where it continues to grow creating a weighty mass at the top which will ultimately result in the tree toppling over in high windy conditions Where you have severed the stems of the ivy you will find that the upper growth left will die and can often be more easily pulled off. I have personal experience of this with mature ivy growing up a substantial Ash tree.
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Thanks Derek. I know it makes the trees very top heavy. I think sadly most of them are dead or dying so will end up having to come down anyway. Ash die back is awful.
