I've been to the same restaurant but in Beijing. I liked it there, it was more quiet then maybe because there were fewer people and there was calming music in the background. I loved the food especially the barbecue, the dessert and drinks ☺️

As a Chinese, to be honest. When we eat outside, when we order food. We will ask the others what food want to eat. I just wanna say your boss probably rude. Or he is your boss. Haha. When friends or family. We really ask them what food they wanna eat. Then we share food. That is true.
@yzhang20084 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is true. But when your eat with your boss, usually she/he is supposed to be the one to order AND pay. She/he may or may not ask suggestions from others.
@RafaGoesAround4 жыл бұрын
Anyhow I always like to be asked for suggestions haha. But when I am with my friends and colleagues, they always ask me!
@bradleyqiini87634 жыл бұрын
In my mind, if you are having a meal with colleagues or friends that are not very close, it is true (sadly) that basically only one person will place the order. But when I go out with my family or my closest friends we will discuss the dishes together and make sure everyone gets the food he wants. And we normally do that with one menu which is checked by everyone. 😄
@RafaGoesAround4 жыл бұрын
haha yes, sometimes I still want to check the menu but I have for the other people to finish checking it first 😆

Recommended+1!! I used to go to this restaurant in Houhai before COVID-19 when the borders were open! Miss the food! Longjing tea shrimp is my favorite, for the shrimps are fresh and refreshing! Tofu with crab roe is also great! My boyfriend loves "面包诱惑"(bread's attraction) most. I think the restaurant brand originates from Suzhou and Hangzhou in eastern coastal China, where people don't eat much spicy food.

Not really. Normally when it's a couple of friends gathering, each one will choose the dish they want and share. Well if the boss is buying food, he will order and will ask you what would u want. But since u r foreigner and it's the first time, your boss Probably think u don't know much so she would order for u. Typically one person choose one or two dishes. Three person four to five dishes are enough.

@RafaGoesAround4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip!
@VashtheStampede0074 жыл бұрын
@Rafa Goes Around! , You are welcome. I was under the impression you prefer to try local foods. That’s why I recommended it lol. 外婆家 (a chain) is a good presentation of the foods in Shanghai area. It is also cheap! If you are open to anything, there is 味千拉面 for ramen. Bullfighter (斗牛士) for steak. One of the best steak places I have been to in China with relatively cheap price by Chinese standard (steak is expensive in China). At Bullfighter, Ribeye steak for example, 250g for 188RMB (the last time I checked) with (unlimited) side dishes ranged from salad, drinks, soup, to dessert. And there is 萨莉亚 , a Japanese chain of Italian foods (I don’t think it is very authentic lol 😂) but still delicious and really cheap. My Italian friend said they don’t eat roasted chicken wings lol 🤣. All of above are chain restaurants. I am an oversea Chinese from Shanghai. Living in Michigan in the US. My last visit to Shanghai ended in January, and I basically go there every year. There are also some nice hot spring places near Shanghai. Such as the ones at 嘉善. Very nice vacation spots. And we have several expat groups in Shanghai to organize a lot of hiking trips. Summer was the best for river hiking, climb over water falls, or jump off them lol.

If you truly understand the real dining culture of Chinese society, you wouldn't be saying Chinese restaurant noisy. Similarly if I pop into a western bar I wouldn't expect it to be quiet. Just an example.

On the other extreme is the buffet restaurant. Everyone gets to choose their own dishes. On very informal affairs, nobody cares. Laissez faire. Suit yourself. But on more formal occasions, it better be One-Party Rule. Or there will be food riots.
