Welcome to the country (after 6 years, it's obviously belatedly stated, but anyways). Prices have gone up but we do not tend to blame long term immigrants, it's more of an airbnb/short term stays. All considerate, educated people are welcome here. Hence the belated welcoming! 🙂

Man, I really dislike they said so bad stuff about our cuisine. Like, seriously??? Making adjustments? Where have you been eating? Simple food is always the best food. I have seen gastronomy in Portugal becoming this really lousy cuisine adapting to these foreigners taste, becoming gourmet (too much), and honestly it sucks. It really bothers me that you may not like it, but talking about that's it's too rustic... I know we are all free to express our opinions, but honestly, this one hurts. And among many things we are always afraid things change too much this is one of them. Seriously, Americans telling us what good food us? It almost sounds like a mean joke. As if eating a silly hamburger is much better than eating a good Rancho, Feijoada, Ensopado... What's been happening is that this new Portuguese generation just doesn't know how to cook, and things that hamburgers are amazing... I really wonder that the hell are people eating at their homes right now. We are losing all of the past wisdom concerning food, that yes it was simple but delicious. If you're trying Portuguese food just going to restaurants.... I can tell you restaurants just suck these days as well, especially if it's in a city. Please, venture out into the countryside, especially to the North and you'll see what good food is. Seriously... americans telling us what good food is... lol LOL

Folks, I believe the Portuguese pronounce the town as STU-BAL and not SE-TU-BAL. and yes, even though I am a “Luso-American” and do speak Portuguese.

There is a robust online discussion about the correct term. Normally, IRL, I use the term immigrant. However, for the purposes of this video, I used expat as it is the commonly used term.

In other videos I have discussed the use of expat vs. immigrant and expressed my view that immigrant is a better descriptor. However, in the case of this video I used expat as it is the commonly used term.

Myself I see no problem foreigners buying house to live there long term, its just means another resident be it at city center, near beach, or luxury house, it’s just a house not being empty. What I don’t like is people buying +10 houses in city center just to put on AirBNB, or buying a house as investment letting it sit empty just looking valuations. Regarding AirBNB, it is government that need to regulate and legislate, should cap nr of short term renting by location specially city centers, and how many houses a person can have on short term renting or kept empty (excluding constructors of course). This would most probably bring down the already hot real state market, even for those wishing to come to Portugal to retire.

Welcome. But you're immigrants here, not expats. I know the most common term used is expats for US citizens and brits, as the author pointed out, but that is the problem! We love you, but you're not different or special, sorry.

IMHO, move to another country to start over when you're young is the way if that is your thing but NOT when you're 70 ...

I didn't move to Portugal to start over. I moved to Portugal at 74 to end my life with new adventures and endless opportunities to explore and discover new places and other cultures. The leisurely pace and social aspects of of the café culture have always attracted me.

They did not came to "start over" they came to enjoy their retirement. Good for them. They are wrong about the cuisine tho, there are several Michelin star restaurants in Portugal, that is for a good reason. They probably go to cheap restaurants or tascas expecting gourmet cuisine... Like... A francesinha will never fit into that category.
