Living outside the US has been a lifelong dream. And, no, my choice is not Portugal. I’ve already begun to research visas, etc. I do online freelance work, and I know I can qualify for my country of choice for my first year outside the US. This is about more than just being unhappy that my candidate didn’t win. I’ve been a lifelong independent. My candidates typically don’t win. But this time around the entire country is shifting more towards misogyny and other kinds of hate. This is no longer my country. We don’t have much in common anymore.

One thing to keep in mind is if the US withdraws from NATO, I’m not sure how friendly Europe will be to Americans. I have been living in France for a year and was literally two months away from returning to the USA. I have to renew my Visa now if I am staying. The bureaucracy in France is overwhelming. France is fantastic, but if you don’t have the patience for delays or paperwork, don’t come. Also, finding an apartment to rent is very difficult. Most landlords require a French income. Buying may be easier, I don’t know. France has a lot of strikes, so be prepared for that too. It’s not all chateaus and wine. If you are determined and can lose some of your ‘I want it now’ American ways, you may be ok. Sorry, I know this is about Portugal, but thought I would contribute a bit about France.

I returned from three weeks in Portugal, now hooked on bifanas and coffee. And I'll miss Pingo Doce and Grovo. Once I got the hang of it, the transportation there was great. I have almost a year to use up credit remaining on my Navegante card, so I'm obligated to return. Besides, I do notice now that I felt safer in the streets of Alfama at 1 a.m. than in my yard at 1 p.m. here in TX.

Actually I am a nurse and applied for my Canadian RN license and I will be driving from California to Canada or Mexico but I’d like to work a few more years before retiring. I originally thought it would be porteguel and I actually visited last month in fear Trump would be elected but the reality set in that I could not get my cats over there so easily and don’t want to put them through that. So next 2 choices are Canada and or Mexico. I’ve been packing and downsizing for 5 months for this possibility. I plan to rent my house out. Not sure why you would say 99.8 % don’t go. I’m sure I’m not the only one preparing. This time is so different than all other elections because we are about to be ruled by a dictator and many shocking and dangerous things will be occurring.

Hi there! I'm originally from Cali but married a Canadian man and have lived in Canada now for decades. I can tell you that I LOVE CANADA! One of the most shocking things about Canada for me was that in Canada we have health care! My American mom paid into her HMO for decades through her employer, then when she needed heart surgery, they simply refused it. She passed on about four months later. Fast forward to my life in Canada many years later and after not needing much health care for most of my life I suddenly came down with a life threatening illness that had me in the ER overnight and multiple more times, had a surgery, and am still having ongoing visits with specialists and I can honestly say the Canadian health care system saved my life! I have probably had like $500 THOUSAND dollars worth of health care and it cost me only my PARKING FEES which were like $2 dollars, $4 dollars. . But try to get in asap while Trudeau (Liberal) is still in, because we have our own maga here who support Pierre Poilievre, who's policies are THE SAME AS DUMP'S. We have our own insurrecionist asshats here too, called Freedumbs but make no mistake, it's the same forces that got Dump elected. So hurry hurry hurry!!! I hope you can get it because although I love my mother country, I feel like Canada loves me back. Cheers!

@@mindfulbynature3418 Hi! Thanks for your well wishes! Yes if PP gets in who knows what we'll be dealing with? But the elections are not for another year (October) so that's why I think you should get the ball rolling asap. There is a chance that the election can be pushed sooner, but that would depend on all of our heads of the parties here voting for it, and most of them still support Trudeau even though he's been slandered by the same kinds of people that have slandered US Democrats. Right now, the other parties won't vote for an election because they know PP (the conservative) would likely win and he's against everything sane, voted against women's right to choose, voted No on health care expansion, speaks hatefully of gays and immigrants, etc (exactly like the US elections). Yet because of these right wing influences he's the front runner. Trudeau has actually done a great job with Canada, but I'm sure you know about the rage machine that the Right Wing can run and they're running it on Trudeau. I still think Canada is a great choice, but like I said the sooner you get in the better!

Moving abroad to one place takes awhile but it's pretty easy to start traveling full-time whether you keep a US home base or not. I've been to 40 countries since 1990. I stay 1-3 months in each country as tourist visas allow. At 64, I'm planning to leave again soon for at least 2 years, maybe longer. As long as you are healthy with a sustainable income, you don't have to stay in the US if you don't want to. The hardest part is getting used to packing light and not having all your stuff with you all the time.

Moving to Portugal really wasn't that hard when I did it in 2017. That was why my husband and I chose it over Italy and other countries in Europe. In Portugal there was a clear path we could take to obtain residency, and ultimately citizenship. In other European countries, there wasn't. We hired an immigration lawyer to help us, gathered the documents we needed, and it all went pretty smoothly. I probably complained about the bureaucracy at the time, but compared to Italy, where I live now, the bureaucracy in Portugal was a walk in the park.

I just stumbled upon your video and enjoyed it. I am a Canadian so no plans on moving anywhere but I guess I find it interesting because in the 60's /70's I grew up in a small town in Canada that welcomed many Portuguese immigrants. ( I understand it was a difficult time in their country then) Our town became about 1/3 Portuguese people. They brought interesting culture and food and diversity with them. What I remember is how hard working they were and how they would buy a house and move in and bring over more family and they worked to buy houses for them. I was just a kid and I remember some backlash but mostly they were welcomed . I remember they painted their house very bright colours which was odd to us and there was some NIMBY because they also might have chickens in their yards. I now wonder what it was like from their perspective because I remember some name calling . Too bad there will probably always be parts of the world and people that will fear " the other" and denounce immigration laws but I know it is a very complicated issue worldwide. Most people say they embrace LEGAL immigration but I now live in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world and while we are may be better at this than other places----can't say we are perfect at it embracing cultural differences.

However, there are other ways to do leave the United States but, another method may not be for everybody. I'm planning on by the end of 2025 to NOT be living in the U.S. My plans are to slow travel through SE Asia, to include Malaysia and Indonesia. Travel with a backpack and small suitcase, carry-on only. Stay at each location from a few days to a few weeks. I'm not going to ship a bunch of belongings ! It's just stuff and nothing more ! I'm retired Navy and have visited some places and so, know kind of what to expect. I know that Transportation, Communication, Health Care are better in SE Asia than in America for the most part. There are obstacles but, America has very recently turned into a nightmare of a country to live in ! Just plan and fail rather than fail to plan !

The benefits are not only the Healthcare system (healthcare means doctor appointments are free, you have a family doctor, that helps you throughout your life, from infancy to old age, but also exams, cancer, accidents, some degree of mental health, emergency ambulance, but also pharmacy - low medication prices) and Education (your kid will have free school from kindergarden to university - which is not 100% free but it is a low value). Benefits are also social security (when you are sick, 22 day vacations, pregnancy leave, 2 extra months income - christmas and summer -, work injuries, support when you are out of work, etc.), retirement (when you are 65 you stop working and the pension is from the country), retirement homes for the elderly, and even a funeral subsidy. There are many more other benefits, these are just the most important. These systems are similar to the ones of other european countries, and in the northern countries, like Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the taxes are much higher.

Very well said Brent. But, I would suggest that even with lower wages, when your education system is free, your health care is free and reliable, your infrastructure is safe and at a higher standard which allows citizens to feel better about where they live, that economically, you might be ahead. Most Americans never rise out of the class they were born in. So they might receive higher wages than in Portugal, but they can go bankrupt over one sudden illness, or they can't afford to send their kids to college, or their schools are not in the best condition, etc. I enjoyed this video.

We departed the US in 2018. It was NOT because of Trump. We had planned to depart years before he came on the scene. It was a toss-up between moving to Portugal or Mexico. In the end, we decided on Mexico, with Portugal as a back-up. FYI: both require a boatload of paperwork and planning. So plan on that when/if you do decide to follow through with immigrating. We have a "good" life in Mexico, that we're quite satisfied with on a day-to-day basis. Research upfront is mandatory.

I have been living here for 16 years now and would like to add 2 tibbits. In regards abortion there is a 10 weeks limit as mentioned, but there are some exceptions regarding situations of rape/incest or health related concerns in regards both the mother and son. One of my friends had to make a call as during pregnancy the medical staff detected very clear signs of Down syndrome and he was advised to abort. As for healthcare I think one thing to consider is very serious diseases (such as the big C or ME for example). They are normally handled by the national healthcare system, what means that people can be facing just live and death situations and not life and death plus bankruptcy . I had personal experience in regards Leukemia, that was detected here many years ago, and at no point I had to consider the expense side of things, and the lack of financial uncertainty and stress was probably a factor in terms of recovering .

Great Video! Definitely a great overview of what to expect moving to Portugal and the contrast between the US and Portugal. One thing I would add is the social aspect. It is very hard to break into Portuguese social circles. The Portuguese are very different culturally to us and integrating with them is tough depending where you are in and what circles you want to get into. Approximately half of US immigrants that move here seem to move back to the US after a year or so, given some of the official statistics. While I’m sure there are a lot of reasons, it’s hard to imagine not being able to find friends is a large one. While I have not spent a lot of time in Portugal, my time there taught me that it’s not the place for most typical Americans, even a majority of those who are wanting to leave now.

Thanks for stressing the fact that you can't just move to another country without residency. I hear people say they are going to leave but you can't without residency somewhere else. Having lived abroad for twelve years it's nice to hear some realities from people rather than the digital nomad take. Also worth mentioning is that you will still have to file taxes in the US as long as you remain a US citizen regardless of where you live, and you may even be double taxed if you earn enough.

I have been following your channel and really appreciate and have enjoyed what you've been showing from Portugal, and the personal perspectives of those from places like the US, UK, and Canada that have made Portugal their home to be quite interesting in their observations and experiences. Having been born and raised in Portugal, but now living in the US for many years I do find your assessment of the political landscape in Portugal seriously flawed in your observation. I applaud folks from places like the US, Canada, and the UK which aren't part of the EU to want to live in Portugal and actively fulfilling that desire by the legal means offered with the likes of the D7 and D8 visas. Those that live here in the US that want to leave because they don’t like the outcome of the election are just offering up a lot of empty lip service that they will never actually follow through with.

The YT Algo brought me here. First off, @13:57 when you began talking about abortion, how did you time the couple and their _Babies_ to come strolling through the scene? 😋 In 2023, about 1.3 Million foreign born people Legally immigrated _Into_ the U.S., and about 400,000-500,000 or so American citizens Migrated out. Although 16% or more of Americans polled say they want to move out of the U.S., the reality is only about 0.15% (3/20th of one percent) actually out-migrate annually now. That's about 15 Americans per 10,000. But just dreaming that one is out of America is almost as good as actually leaving.

The general consensus among Portuguese people is that Setubal and greater Lisbon in general are a bit unsafe, busy and have a worse quality of life overall compared to the rest of the country, what Setubal and Lisbon have to offer though is a lot more economic opportunies, job offers and entertainment. The North (closer to the coast since you don't want mountains) is probably a safer and offers more quality of life if you care for that, Porto and Braga are obviously big, bustling cities, but there's also Guimarães, Barcelos, Viana do Castelo, Chaves, Ponte de Lima, etc..

And the most important thing, Healthcare - God forbid, you have medical issues and then you can forget 95 percent of the planet. It took me over a year to plan my exit.
