Kyuho's mother's cooking always look amazing. My family doesn't really celebrate chuseok in the traditional way. We just buy jeon and ddeok and call it a day 🤣 So it's always impressive how much work goes into preparing for the day. I love how you addressed the gender conflict. This channel is both comforting and informational, which I love 🥰

I think the changes sound good, particularly if it takes the load off the female members of the family. Our family is massive. About 6 years ago we changed Christmas Day lunch, so that we all brought dishes to share. The host for that year coordinates everyone, so we have a good balance of food and drinks. We also do a Kris Kringle for all of the adults, with a $50 AUD limit, and gifts only for the kids. Where Christmas used to be so incredibly stressful, particularly for me, as the mum! Now everyone really enjoys getting together and catching up with everyone else. It’s truly become a family celebration! We do something similar for Easter too. 🥰

Chinese shares the holiday and do similar things, but different :) My parents are gone which has influenced keeping the tradition alive as this celebration is about family. So, when we celebrate the holiday we celebrate them, and that's important. Now, as far as food preparation goes, we do a lot more take out than make at home. Keeps things more manageable and relaxing. 😁

Happy belated birthday, Sarah! I love how you both went to your favorite restaurant where you went when you were dating. Yes, yes! I’m that person who turns her dish, to appreciate the look, but to get that perfect Insta picture too. 😂. I absolutely LOVE Chuseok with Kyuho’s family, and have appreciated your family videos since I first found your channel many years ago. The love that Kyuho’s mom puts into each traditional dish is apparent in the table setting. My mouth waters every single time. Thank you for explaining Chuseok, as well as Kyuho’s current (Chuseok) family dynamic to us, as I do miss seeing you all with grandpa, and taking your family hike to pay respect to the family graveside. Praying that the traditions continue in your family with the niece and nephew, and that they never go away. Being of Japanese descent, we have Oshogatsu/Osechi that’s a huge part of our lives each year. Like Kyuho’s mama, the cooking of each traditional dish, typically lies on the moms. Thankfully, our one and only son, who is about to turn 26, has embraced this tradition, and has promised to carry it on, once I’m too old to do so. Take care! See you both next week! ❤

Kyuho’s mom’s holiday food is unreal-there are just no words! 🥲 Kyuho’s niece and nephew actually don’t do any ancestral ceremonies, because their family is Christian-many (if not most) Christians in Korea don’t do it. Oshogatsu is such a big one in Japan! I’d love to be there at least once and see what it’s like, as I’ve only ever been to Japan between May and August :)

Our families got rid of the Chuseok gathering a few years ago, but each family would take care of the family graves around Chuseok holidays. Although, I still know less than half of my relatives I get to see during the holidays, it gives me such a special and good feeling of bonding as the same clan that has continued for centuries. Therefore, it is bit sad that the whole culture is disappearing, but I think it is a very natural consequence of the modern society and I am also quite glad that I won't need to see some of those good old patriarchy traditions anymore.

A society that looses its traditions looses itself. It is a sad and tears apart the structure . In my family Christmas is a big big thing.( I live in Seoul but was born in Belgium) Every year we return home for that holiday and as the mother, grandmother of the family I organise a feast for the whole family ( up to 28 people). The day before part of the family comes over and rearrange the furniture in the house to make place. Over the last years, as I get older , they start to bring their own dishes to complete the feast. We have some real soup masters and bakers in our family so 🤗 On the evening itself some attent the midnight mass and others stay home and prepare more food . In september even my young nieces and nephews start to ask me if there will be Christmas at my house. Friends of members of the family are also welcome. On the evening itself before they go home everybody helps out to put the house back in order. And before they leave the house looks like nothing happened. yes it is a lot of work and I have to take some rest afterwards but I would not want to break that tradition for any reason. It is the cement to our family and I gladly gladly keep it going. After all, it is 3 days in a whole year so 🤗

I think the food prep that goes into these family holidays is not particular or unique to Korea. Several other countries in in Asia have similar outside of lunar new year. Vietnamese food for example can also be very labor intensive. Thanks for sharing your holidays with us as always. Sarah I hope your family rode out the storm well and is safe 🙏

We were in Korea last year visiting my in laws over chuseok and we actually went to my husband’s grandparents house like 2 days before chuseok and then left the day before. The family members visiting have started to spread out I’ve noticed. As an American I like when everyone gathers though so I can meet and see all my husbands’ different family members. 😁 But this year we just video called his family and that was it 😅

Yes, family members meeting up has definitely started to spread out and people tend to meet with smaller groups of their immediate family members. Video calling is definitely the more modern way to do it, though! 😅

On the subject of getting together for the holidays, after parents passed away, we now only come together just the immediate family. We in one gathering where minimum 50 people max 75. As we were 10 children and each sibling had 3 children. Now we just do a family reunion one a year. We daughters helped my mom with the cooking and left hard labor to the guys. Later we did pot luck n cleaned up. Now each family gather’s at their own home to continue with potluck tradition.

I remember when I was a child, my mom would literally spend all night slaving away in my big uncle’s kitchen to prepare for the ritual ceremony. At the time, I thought that was the norm, but now I think about it, it’s so fucking messed up. It’s been 30+ years since we moved to US and my mom said one thing that she does not miss about Korea is preparing for food for those ritual ceremonies.

Hmmmm…this Korean holiday reminds me of our Thanksgiving and Christmas. It takes me at least 3 days to prepare the Thanksgiving meal for my family, about 15 people. It’s getting pretty brutal as I get older. I prepare at least 20 to 25 different dishes in heaping quantities. It usually costs about $800+ US. Then everyone swoops in, eats and has fun, says thanks, packs up a ton of food to take home, and leaves me with the mess and dishes. And, yes, I’m starting to get a little disgruntled. Just because you’re the mom, it doesn’t mean you’re slave labor. I might come up with my own statement about here’s the meager fare I’m going to cook…now what does everyone else want to bring? Or better yet, ok, who’s going to do this next year because I quit! 😂🤣 Christmas is better because I started catering the meal and only cooking a few of our traditional favorites. I am always too exhausted and in pain from standing on a tile floor to enjoy anything.

You should switch to potluck style if you’re having so many people over-it’s only fair 😎 Plus it’ll be WAY easier on you!

Are you in the US? I think all the families I know in the US do it differently. The host usually cooks the ham or turkey, and all the other family members bring the side dishes. Also, if anyone is spending $800 for 15 people, that is overspending.

@@jellybellyfun3288 I prepare enough food to feed an army because my crew wants leftovers for the next few days. They actually bring ziplock containers to pack up what they want. Yes, they’re spoiled beyond belief and it was fine when I was younger but now it’s getting old and so am I. 🤪 And, yes, it’s $800+ for everything I fix. The last few years I’ve kept the receipts because I was curious about it. I start buying all canned goods in September. I get two grocery carts filled to capacity and almost overflowing ( that includes all the fresh stuff, meats, etc.) a few days before the meal. I took over doing Thanksgiving when I was 25 from my mom and I mistakenly thought my kids would do the same for me. Nope. Not happening. My youngest daughter does come to help a couple of days before so that’s helpful. 😁👍🏼👍🏼 My mom had wonderful traditional Holidays when I was growing up and I wanted to keep the traditions alive. Unfortunately, I’m 64 now and have autoimmune diseases and the traditions are starting to kick my behind. I hate to see them go but that’s probably what’s going to happen in the near future. 😭 Oh, and yes, I’m in the US in the South where we go overboard.

Chuseok reminds me of a lot of Thanksgiving in the U.S. Through my lifetime the tradition has changed a bunch for my family. We used to make SO much food for Thanksgiving and would travel around for family and now it's just my immediate family that gets together and as a result we make a lot less food (and have made it healthier too haha). Even then, I have a sibling that doesn't meet up on Thanksgiving anymore because their job makes them choose between taking time off for Christmas or Thanksgiving. We used to have very traditional types of foods that we had to make for the holiday but now we don't make some of them anymore and have changed a lot of the recipes too. Very interesting to compare holiday sentiments between countries. It was also interesting to hear that Korea had a cultural governing body of sorts. As always, great to see Kyuho's family and Happy Birthday Sarah!!

Happy birthday! Rituals and tradition are the glue that hold societies and cultures together and preserves them for thousands of years. Although stressful, celebrating these traditions is really an act of love and strengthens family bonds. It's hard work and sacrifice but well worth it. Change is not always a good thing so changing these rituals should be done very carefully.

It’s hard to strengthen family bonds when the holidays often do the exact opposite 😅 Lots of work/labor = families getting stressed and fighting more (divorce rates spike in Korea after the holidays) 😅 An ‘act of love’ would not be expecting hard labor every year, and to actually care about the health and well-being of fellow family members, while being able to actually relax and spend quality time together ☺️ In this way, change is a good thing-it definitely has been for our family.

Why didn't they object in their times? I don't know. Sometimes our generation is criticized for wanting too much change and choosing the easy ways of doing things. I can see both sides of this.

It depends on the family, but in many cases it’s still extremely burdensome and exhausting-particularly for women. Korea even has a term ‘holiday syndrome’ koreabizwire.com/holiday-syndrome-why-koreans-need-time-off-after-a-holiday/111480 Since Korea has an age hierarchy, even if younger generations do protest and want to downsize, older generations are resistant (likely because they don’t bear the brunt of the physical labor 😅), so it’s hard to change it. This is the reason for the ‘generational conflict’ we talked about in the video. But covid ‘helped’ to speed up this downsizing.

With modern technologies can't much of the work be reduced? It would be great if the work could be less burdensome. It's such a beautiful tradition.

Always-even now in the majority of cases 😅 Due to age/social hierarchy, it’s not something that would have been acceptable to complain about or even bring up. The food traditionally eaten during Korean holidays are very labor intensive and time consuming. There are no machines that can make dumpling filling and wrap them at home, or one that can make and flip hundreds of jeon in frying pans. It’s not like putting a turkey in the oven for Xmas and just leaving it for several hours and chilling-you’re always on the go making several different things at once for Korean holidays.

Happy belated birthday, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Enjoy learning about the Korean culture as I am planning a visit in 2024 as my grandniece wants to study there. If she does decide, I plan to stay for 6 months with her. The only problem I see is the long flight. I am used to traveling 10 hours but no more than that so I might stop in another country to rest before continuing.

Kind of sad that people are getting away from doing the Chuseok holiday, but I understand the reasons. I hope it will continue in perhaps a less stressful way. I just adore Kyuho's mom. Not only is she an amazing baker (I think you know I follow her on Instagram) but OMG... the spread she puts out!!!!! By the way, I got your skincare box and can't wait to try it. Just before it arrived I used a moisturizer and had a reaction, so I'm waiting for my skin to calm down before I start using your skincare box. And I'm teaching English to two Koreans (a mother and son). The mother wanted recommendations for things to watch that would help her improve her English speaking skills. I recommended your channel. I think she will love this video in particular.

So interesting how much chuseok is changing since the pandemic. One of my Korean teachers also said that he no longer goes to his family's house and instead stays at home or goes on holiday (he's 30). I can imagine with birth rates being so low in Korea, perhaps the government want to help prevent unnecessary divorces around the holiday season too.

Happy birthday!! 🎉 Your birthday was so nice. All the things you did would have been my perfect day too (except maybe the thrift clothes shopping lol 😆). Interesting to see in real time traditions changing like that for Chuseok. I wonder if it could become a regret later that some of those traditions get lost and aren’t practiced anymore. But I can see why younger generations just don’t want to participate as much anymore especially if it doesn’t hold much meaning for them.

I studied abroad to SK fall 2019 semester and I remember how when the holiday came around one of my teachers (that turned into like my SK mom) took her nephew, a family friend, and I to a buffet for a Chusuk lunch; I remember we where in the taxi and the 3 of them all mentioned how crazy that there was no one on the roads - they talked about how it used to be IMPOSSIBLE to drive that day and how we ran into zero traffic...so even before the covid "fun" times they were already seeing a decline in travel. It kinda reminds me of black Friday here in the USA. It used to be a CRAZY sh*t show (which was kinda fun to try and find parking and seeing how much of your list you could get that day, waiting in line for lunch and then getting home at 9-10pm with all the goodies) and how now a days they start black Friday deals like RIGHT after Halloween and black Friday isn't really a thing anymore....

I was just reminded of the kimchi preparation season (?) idk how to name it hehe when I was a exchange student in Korea back in 2016 my Korean friend invited me to her grandma's house to prepare kimchi, all the women were working hard while the men were eating or resting... I know it's cultural and I was kinda used to it since it happens also in Mexico but is still surprising although I think it is slowly changing anyway have a great week guys😊🙆‍♀️ edited to add how I identified with Kyuho haha chocolate cake is the best 🤭

I spent Chuseok in Jeonju Hanok village and it was so packed! I went there in 2020 too and I'd say in terms of how many people went there, it's the same. Obviously in 2020 there were fewer people but it was still pretty packed up. This time it felt like everyone just wants to spend a ncie holiday instead of a long and exhausting food preparation.

@@2hearts1seoul It was pretty crowded, mostly nearby the food stalls 😅 But other than that, it wasn't as bad, I fetl as safe as in my country, since there are no mask rules since february - march. :) I missed a lot of opportunities during my study abroad back in 2020 - 2021 so I was pretty happy to see Jeonju like this!

I was watching English language Korean news and they had a scholar which said the only things on the table need to be alcohol, dried fish and fruit. All that other stuff has been added over the years but not necessary. So some are doing a smaller Chuseok table.

Any celebration has the main element of bringing people together and closer, customs can change but the essence shouldn’t be forgotten. In India there are various of such holidays, I often feel like the rituals can be a little extra in current times but nevertheless it’s always a good opportunity to connect with loved ones. 🌸💕

I agree with Sarah. I live in Trinidad and I am of indo Caribbean decent. Maybe 10 years ago we had huge celebrations for various events such as prayer and weddings. Now everything is downsizing. I think, yes covid and the generational gap had a part but also cost of living expenses have contributed to this. Yes based on the class you're at, extravagance isn't affected. The more I learn about Korea from various sources, I don't think Korea is really very different compared to other countries. We all go through the same situation just it's a different country/culture.
