At the age of 103, not only is today’s guest the oldest I’ve ever welcomed onto my podcast, but she’s also the oldest returning guest, too!
Dr Gladys McGarey is the co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and the author of the fantastic book ‘The Well-Lived Life: A 103-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age.’ She began her medical practice at a time when women couldn’t even own their own bank accounts, and over the past sixty years, she’s pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health that’s transformed the way we imagine health care and self-care around the world.
In this wonderful and uplifting conversation, and with her trademark humour and compassion, Gladys offers profound insights on living with purpose, navigating adversity and finding healing within ourselves.
We explore how to avoid living with regrets, the importance of parents truly listening to and supporting their children and finding your unique purpose that ‘feeds your soul’. We also look at how we can bring a more positive attitude to negative experiences and how Gladys lives by what she calls her "5 Ls" - life, love, laughter, labour and listening.
Still thriving at 103, she embodies staying curious, adaptable and active. During our conversation, she shares her views on ageing, believing in ‘ageing into health’ rather than ‘anti-ageing.’ She also stresses the importance of doctors listening to - and loving - their patients but that it’s ultimately us who are responsible for our own healing.
Gladys’s century of life experiences has something to offer everyone. Her wisdom will inspire you to reflect on your own purpose, face life's challenges with resilience and make the most of the years ahead.
It was an honour to speak to Gladys again and have such a deep and honest conversation with her. I hope you enjoy listening to her as much as I did. Her playfulness, humour, and can-do attitude remind us that it's never too late to learn, grow and make a positive impact on the world around us.

This was helpful to me. I have always regretted letting so many of my teachers down when they invested so much of themselves in me and in their other students. They probably forgot me easily while I carried my gratitude, love and shame with me into my seventh decade! Gratitude is enough. I hopeG-d will let those teachers know how their caring and efforts left indelible impressions.

Not in my family AND not in the families of any one I know actually. The world is what we make it. Everyone is not the same, there are always exceptions to everything. Many many many people “in the West” Do know the Elders are treasures of wisdom. It depends on the “culture” of each individual family household. If they are taught to respect the elders they Will Do it as they grow into adults. So if by “the West” you mean the U.S. . . We are not all the same in this Country. ❤️

Awe! Gladys was born the same year as my mom (who lived to be 96). I agree … doctors “fix” things and guide us to recovery when we are sick or broken, but love (along with a good doctor-patient relationship) is the great healer!! ❤ And … might I add, since we are taught that God is love, then we see that God in us is the great healer! ❤ Thank you for this genuine, heartwarming interview! I thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening … with love! ❤️

Great podcast w/Gladys! Early on when she talks about refusing help from the man at the grocery store it rang a bell w/me. I’m a 78 yr old female (I don’t look or act it) and am just realizing recently to let people help me. I’ve been on my own a very long time, divorced and never remarried for 40 years. I got so used to doing everything on my own and had the attitude that I was so powerful and didn’t need any help. I regret that now. I’m only now accepting help even for small favors when they are offered. It helps me and more importantly it gives the helper joy and purpose for him or herself. It’s an honorable thing to help someone and to be helped!

Wait: "I'd had my 99th birthday and I was shopping at the grocery store and taking them to my car, and an elderly gentleman came..."??? 30 seconds in and I'm hooked. 99, shopping, driving and viewing an 86yr old as elderly?! Fan-bloody-tastic! 😂 👏

Needed this. Thank you. Heavenly Father please continue to protect me and my sons. As a single mother God has carried me. Both of my sons are special needs. I’m overwhelmed because I’m struggling to provide the necessities for my sons like food and clothing and I struggle to pay rent each and every single month yet my struggles have brought me closer to Jesus. I know he will get me through this hard time in Jesus name.❤️

I took an unexpected slump at 70. Now 72. I am listening to bring back meaning at a time where many options are no longer there. I wasn't prepared for this slump. But I will regroup and keep going because to be this age and we'll, means we always regrouped and kept going. Good luck. The force is with us!

This is such an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing her story. I went home and we went to the cemetery. Ther was a shiny new black headstone with a suitcase engraved (white. So it stood out on the background). I had to go over and look. It was a lady who was over 100 yr old. (centenarian). As I got closer, I read the writing above the engraved suitcase (literally, a huge suitcase with a handle) . It said, “GO, GRANNY, GO”!! Probably 30years later, I still remember that moment. I wished I could have had a conversation with her. Mostly, I realized her life was fulfilled and well spent. How many of us can say that?

Let’s face it, humans have the choice to love or hate. To be positive or negative. To respect the opinions of others or to twist the issues into nonsensical propaganda to push their own agenda.

We have a choice to make big decisions and small ones. If you are not true to yourself because of fear and you choose to be brainwashed it is never too late to come back to your true nature! You are always able to ''turn the tables'' at any age and the prize would be YOUR HAPPY SELF ! I agree with your remark 100%. Send you my love.❤🌺

That was cute when she said when her little grandkid touched her neck and she was "thrilled". Physical closeness and touch can be so powerful. Good thing that we have this whole virtual reality like FaceTime, videocalls, but a tight chest to chest hug with a loved one is definitely one of the best feeling. Personal contact is the "real thing". I also agree with that on paper you can seem healthy, your blood test can be perfect, but if your soul is lonely or you don't get the love you want, then you are not that fully healthy...The 5 L: love life laughing listening labour, I would highlight the laugh. VERY VERY important to find some humour even in our darkest days...a good joyful belly laugh everyday with a loved one can definitely increase our happiness level, plus it absolutely makes us feel alive. It's wise to be responsible, but don't always take life too seriously, sometimes we win, sometimes we fail, and it's okay, we have to learn to laugh at ourselves.

I am 80 years old now and I can honestly say that the five Ls she mentioned are absolutely essential. Actually, in my retirement years now I am so much more able to pay attention to things of interest to me. I can listen to things for hours on end to learn more and more every day. I only listen or read things that I can learn by..once in a while I do solitaire or watch a program I love (NCIS), but for the most part I’m only geared toward substantive info..

She is brighter than most . Loved hearing about her mum. More gorgeous and youthful than many . Elders of this age, exude a new born baby look about them , I see . Dress sense is suitably energetic, the cool green with abstract print , single noticeable broach jewel , the dainty long necklace of bead, and matching broach style rings ; and the beautiful braid bun hair do ; she is like a girl in a painting . What she said from her experience I need to think on about not fixing things ; being a maintenance person, jump to fixing it. (Don't know whether I can break the habit but at least I don't try and fix things that are not broken). Love the background, with all her nice things on display in the handsome real deal wood wall cabinet . Looking at her home decor . She is truly amazing ! Totally gorgeous and youthful and endearing woman . Didn't like the "mother earth" thing . But that's me . I don't like the hippie in anyone . Nor in me so no one gets upset by my aversion to that part of her message. This was a hopeful, and optimistic, pleasurable video, especially for KZbin . I hope it inspires others to do the same as it is the circle of life skills sharing and rather important. 😊
