Great critique. I wish more people understood that you can still like a thing while also being able to see its faults. Personally, my main beef with LiS: TC was, as you mentioned, the huge lack of locations in the town. They made Haven Springs out to be this super interesting place, and as far as I can tell, it's a flower shop, a record store, and a bar. You even live above the bar, so it's basically two birds, one stone. Fuck. Silent Hill on the PS1 had a larger city with more locations in it. Anyway, great review. I wish you'd do a review for all the LiS games.

Is it weird that I felt like this game was "too nice"? Like anytime there was potential for interesting conflict, the choices were always more about "sensitivity." For a game based on emotions, destructive ones like jealousy, disgust, and anger are wildly underused.(This made it hard for me to even believe Alex was some kind of "problem child" in the past.- Imagine if Chloe Price had these powers instead, and the potential for a more intriguing game becomes clear.) Maybe I'm a cynical chud, but in all its compassion, True Colors is a bit too mellow, thematically, and I think that makes it a bit dull. Anyway, great review 👍 I'm in the same boat: I love LiS, and I own all the games, but when talking about them, I get super critical! True Colors felt very limited to me. A beautiful town with little to explore, and a twist that's a repeat of the first game (Jed = Jefferson), but with a less exciting climax. And the romance options don't feel balanced at all- Should I pick the fun girl full of life, who's totally into me, or the generic dude who's about as interesting as watching paint dry? Gee, I wonder which romance path the developers are favoring? Even if the steep price wasn't an issue, I'd still rank this as only the 3rd best LiS game. I agree that the best aspects of it are the acting, and the improved facial animations, but I'd shout out the music too. C'mon, the title screen theme is great!

And the funny thing about jealousy is how much Mac gets punished for it 😂 He gets beaten up, breaks up with his girlfriend (depending on choice), gets accused of murder, the whole town seems to hate him and Typhoon threatens him. Like, is jealousy that much of an irrational or even invalidated emotion in the eyes of the developers that you become the root of all evil for having it? Mac is acting like an ass for sure, but sheesh the last thing missing here is public execution at this point 😂😂

After playing true colours...it made me appreciate LIS 2 even more. Yes LIS 2 was a bit flawed but it had quiet moments and amazing beautiful locations and multiple different ending and interesting characters compared to true colors. My favourite moments form lis2 is sean's conversation with his mom, and in the beginning of ep 2 where Sean sits outside the cabin and wonders for himself if he has powers and the music in the background.

The art style fees to hyper realistic, dontnod’s style for LiS2 was good quality and cohesive with the art style. There’s also no deuteragonist. LiS1 had Max and Chloe, BtS had Chloe and Rachel, LiS2 had Sean and Daniel. Part of what makes the games so impactful is the core relationship of the game developing and growing. This game doesn’t have that. Sure there’s Ryan and Steph, who are really likeable, but so underused, they don’t develop at all, and they barely have scenes as a trio hanging out and chilling outside of those plot relevant scenes. Romances weren’t developed. This game isn’t complex :/

It definitely feels like they're moving it away from the original style which is one of the things that made it so good and unique, the moment you saw a clip could tell exactly what it was from. Now it's just any modern 3D game basically. I also think it feels like more of a lonely experience as well without a second main character basically with you everywhere. Though I guess again, that's probably a lot more Dontnods influence which has sadly disappeared now. Like one of their more recent games Tell me Why was amazing! To me it felt quite similar to a Life is Strange game, had their beautiful art style and there were two characters who could play off eachother and we get the deep connection. I'm excited to see where LIS4 goes, hopefully different again. Though not too hopeful for the future of the series now it has a completely different team working on it. Deck9 make good games and nice graphics. Though they did the best with BTS because that was an already established style and characters.

it felt logical enough to me: we're dealing with a company (Typhon Mining) who is very large and powerful, their HQ is in Denver so to them a small town like Haven Springs means very little...to them the work they do there is probably the same as every where else. But then this incident happens...Gabe dies in one of their blasts...now if that isn't bad enough Typhon are concerned about the bigger skeletons coming out. Let's look at it from their point of view "of all the blasts this man had to die in that one..." a massive company like them aren't ever going to confess to what happened...they have got this side deal going with Jed. Big companies think they can get away with anything...it's typical behaviour...and believable. If you listen to people around town it even sounds like they don't treat their own workers very well.

The biggest problem with True Colors is the story, it's not enough. I like the characters, I like the setting, the visuals have improved well but the plot is mediocre at best. I still like the game tho but I feel like they underestimated this latest installment in the series. The situations that Alex either stumbles upon by your choice to get involve in or if you're completely willing, they have this lack in consideration with the game's content overall. It's just not enough. It's like you ordered the item on the menu but you got a lacking meal when the waiter served it to you.

it took me 2 days after launch to Platinum this game... And there was such a huge issue with the story. First there is Alex's inconsistent use of her power and the endings. There is no bad ending in this game. If you argue that there is, you're objectively wrong. And because there is no bad ending, you just feel like you're getting a participation trophy because even the part where you're drilling into obvious bad guy #1 to make him cry. Steph leaving after I romanced Ryan was annoying. I was also pretty underwhelmed by how little time you actually spend with the characters and particularly Steph and Ryan. They work well as a trio and the timeskips are effective in showing their bond... but that also means you don't see them much. It all happens too fast. I would have liked basically a runtime twice as long. I wanted to explore more of the town and see more of the characters. I also felt like the fifth chapter was too quick. I wanted to say goodbye to everyone but alas. And paradoxically I felt like the first half was too much of a slog. Well written and acted but toooooo slow. That's a regular issue with LiS (haven't played LIS2 but BTS Ep 3 is the biggest offender to me).

i think people underestimate how well Alex's trauma as a foster kid is portrayed...i had a therapist look at True Colors and she felt Alex's behaviour was (putting aside her powers) very genuine: first of all her hair style, stereotypically a girl who has her hair across her face like Alex often that is a sign of trauma or depression...it means she wants to hide. Gabe even hesitates when he says Alex looks how he thought she would which implies he was lying (in other words he wasn't sure what to say so he just told a white lie). Secondly when Alex and Gabe are talking about the fight with Mac...Alex shows miniature behaviour gestures of stress and trauma that my therapist friend noticed. When Gabe said it seemed like Alex had fought before Alex runs her finger along the rim of the beer can subconsciously. If you tell Gabe about what the foster system was like (instead of about your power) then Alex does a number of stressful motions: she taps the beer can repeatedly, crouches over in a semi fetal position and cant look Gabe in the eyes for part of the conversation.
@alanogy
@alanogy 2 жыл бұрын
I felt the same in almost every detail. As someone a little older who's dealt with grief, I found the script after Gabe's death distractingly unrealistic; nobody's emotions are that normal a day or week later. As someone a little older, I don't care as much that I spent $60 on this vs. $5 getting the original LIS on a Steam sale a couple years ago. Or that Square Enix sells FFXIV with all its expansions for $60. But it's not a good deal. I wasn't motivated to play through all the different choices because the ending can't be changed in any interesting way. So I think I only got 2-3 hours total playtime doing a chapter a day for 5 days. I enjoyed getting back into the same play style as the original game, I liked not having to grind out the main character's bad reputation this time around - that was the a really badly designed part of the original game to me. Then again, the power to feel someone is sad was kind of boring compared to the power to rewind time in the original, which I think had a much better story as well as the larger areas to explore. And yes, the improved graphics are nice. But you trade those improvements for the problems pointed out in this video.

Growing up as an Asian American i obviously do have my biases on why i love this game (And also because I'm a phoebe Bridgers fan hehe) and I was SOOOO nervous to watch this video. I didn't want my opinion to change from this game that had an Asian lead, in one of my favorite game titles EVER. But i came in watching this video with an open mind, and came out with a fresh perspective. I really do agree with a lot of these points, hell- maybe all of them. I played this game (when it was on sale cause JESUS) and I loved it. My second run was pretty boring really, and I didn't even finish it a second time. This video really did make me realize how flawed this game is, but the thing is I still feel really attached to this game. Alex reminds me a lot of myself, and so seeing this character who I can relate to emotionally and racially will always outweigh the flaws this game presents, but it doesn't necessarily mean these flaws aren't valid problems, and it also doesn't mean I don't have issues with them either. I do. But what I think is the most important factor about these games is how people respond to it. Everyone has their opinions, but its good to address underlying issues. This game is arguably the worst life is strange game (even to myself) but it will continue to be my favorite as it's a step forward towards asian visibility in gaming, which to me is very important growing up both brown, asian and an immigrant. This whole statement might be a mess because i'm just jotting down my thoughts, but this was a very well executed video. Well done !

True colors definitely is the weakest game of the franchise. My biggest problem with it is that it’s so damn short. It took me barely 9 hours to get through the game and that was with me also exploring the world a bit and doing EVERYTHING you could do. I played LiS 2 right before and there it took me over 12 hours just to get through the story. If I had explored more then it would have been probably a couple hours more. All in all the story in True Colors felt really rushed and while it was good it could have been a whole lot better. And there honestly is no truly bad ending, no matter what you do you win. The only change is how many people are on your side at the end and if you romance someone. So much wasted potential in my opinion.

True Colors sets a comfy vibe, I'll give it that. The graphics and animation were top notch, the town was a nice escape, and the performances were great. But other than that, it's the most garbage game of the entire franchise. The story was too predictable, you end up spending a lot of time wandering around not doing much, the powers didn't affect Alex's character development AT ALL (which I had high hopes for after she attacked Mack), none of the choices matter much and when they do, they don't have a big impact, and they decided to save Alex's backstory for the very end (which was a horrible writing decision). By that point, I couldn't bring myself to care about it, because I was pissed at getting dragged out of the main narrative already with the LARP episode. What I feel they should've done that would be far, far more interesting? Start from the damn back story where her dad leaves and have Alex move through the foster care system on her own as she's discovering her powers & struggling to keep control of them. You could go through romance options as she discovers her sexual identity, her powers could randomly mess things up, there'd be foster homes she ran away from and some good ones, maybe she searches for Gabe in between. All of that would keep the tension going and make for a far more interesting game. True Colors felt more like an extended DLC to me. Maybe I'll write a prequel fanfic now lol because I'm so disappointed in this game, it feels like window dressing tbh and I immediately got that feeling when they started playing up how good the town and graphics and animation looked. They were hiding a crappy story. And the thing that bothers me most is that Alex was an amazing character! She deserved better.

the graphics are one of the bigger issues IMO...they act as a wall...they basically stand there and say "have a good enough computer or console otherwise you can't play this game" and i don't think Square Enix quite realise the problem with that...they are basically improving the graphics with every Season of LIS and every time that happens it means less people can play it because not everyone has a device that can play it. Some one just needs to say to Square Enix "guys...this is a game about STORY...stop improving the graphics...this isn't Halo or Horizon Zero Dawn". I'm not even going to touch how badly the remake of LIS 1 was...it was awful...and they called it a remaster when they actually changed things...that's not a remaster...a remaster is when you change nothing but just make it LOOK better...but they altered some scenes and everything...it's an insult.

Wavelength + the base game could've been 60. The max id go with the base game is around 35.

I really liked the game by itself but it felt… tame?… for a LIS game. LIS has always been about these big choices and from what I can tell no matter what you choose in LIS: TC, you get the same outcome (spoiler: Jed losing), so what’s the point in the choices? Like in the first game your choice impacted whether your best friend/gf died or if an ENTIRE TOWN got destroyed. And the choice in this game is whether you leave on a bus or live in the town? Nahhh, needs more jeopardy to be LIS.

the plot wouldve been SOOOOO much better if the plot twist involved ryan being in on it to protect his dad, it would've made so much sense and would've felt like an actual plot twist. the jed twist just felt like they were trying to replicate mark jefferson and failed miserably.

Something I wished TC did was have Alex's backstory be told throughout the entire game, rather than just dumped all at the end. Like, have some flashbacks at certain areas or times during the game, or have more memories of Alex and Gabe together before they were separated so we could really feel Gabe's death. As was, I didn't care about Gabe enough at the beginning to really want to find out who killed him, especially since he died so early in the game. I even wonder if it would have been stronger if he died at the end of the 2nd or 3rd episode and focused on something different the first two episodes, like maybe trying to find out where their dad was. I feel Alex's backstory is a good one and reflects what happens a lot on how siblings in America who go into foster care wind up being separated and 'problem children' are often put into group homes. The way the game dumped everything at the very end felt a little clunky and too rushed.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - My biggest pet peeve about the game is that as you uncovered the mystery, the motive of the villain makes zero sense. You find out the company has cops, politicians, good lawyers and such in their pocket. Even if they did illegally do something, they would easily 100% get away with the 2nd explosion and have more benefit from preventing the death.

RIGHT?! I still don't get to this day WHY THE FUCK square Enix made the BEAUTIFUL (sarcasm) DECISION to give the rights of the game CREATED FROM DONTNOD which let me reming yall WAS AN INDIE GAME STUDIO BACK IN 2014, they were starting over since they broke, LIS 1 and 2 with CS along ways, they are SO IMPORTANT to me, and to a lot of people. These three games have the exact same aura that makes a LIS game A LIS GAME for me. I absolutely am disgusted by Before the Storm for my own reasons, not only the plot wholes DeckNine created, (but mainly that too lmao) how they re-writed chloe and how they just didnt give a single F for Rachel how DontNod portrayed her. I just think its a really bad game, and they kinda redeemed themselves for me on de DLC, which again created plot wholes for the original game, but its the same aura and vibe to the og game. And for LIS TC, i was hella exited for, until I noticed how they got rid of the "oil hand painted" style dontnod created for the game. I do love the improvement of animation and motion capture, and face expressions. But the game overall is WAY TOO REALISTIC for a LIS game in my opinon. Other than that, i really think they focused all the money on these 3 topics and forgot about making it consistent and making an interesting power. For me TC is a huge 4/10 being gentle about it. Purpledough said everything else I would put in here to take an end to this huge comment lmao. But yeah, the big problem is giving another person's work to someone new and like SE basically said " fuck you, you french pigs. D9 gives us more money cause they do very much fanservice. The game is not yours anymore :D" like ugh! TBH I decided that I will no longer play any more LIS games if they are keep on being made from D9. I do like D9 as a game studio cause i see their talent, but they touched a very important part of my life and of me being alive today, and i'm pretty sure its not just me. And that part of my life? They did it VERY dirty. So sorry this was so long but I HAD TO cause you just .... I FEEL YOU. #GiveDNTNDlisBack!

I’m still glad that the rights were given to Deck Nine, because they show more dedication to giving a true LIS experience. With their practice with before the storm and True Colors, hopefully the next game will be even more amazing. I feel like DONTNOD and LIS 2 showed that if they were to continue the franchise, it would stray too much from it’s core. At least True Colors felt similar to LIS in style, which bodes well for Deck Nine’s future, in my opinion.

I wish Alex and us the player got to spend more time with Gabe. I was really enjoying the relationship building and then he gets killed off for shock value + start the plot. His death would have had a lot more impact if we actually got more time with him. Don't see him again until episode 5 and at that point it's just Alex talking to her own mind that manifests itself as Gabe. Episode 5 may as well be an exposition dump. We get all this backstory about Alex's past, her father, and some of her brother in one go when it should have been sprinkled throughout the game. They could have had Gabe and Alex looking into what happened to their father and THATs when Gabe dies in an "accident". There's really just not enough time spent building relationships compared to LiS 1 which had us with Chloe 90% of the game.

One of the good things that happened after this game released is that, from what i've seen, LIS fans started appreciating the second game more. I remember the year when lis2 came out, people were crapping on it HARD, and I think it was because it was different from the first game and it wasn't about Max and Chloe. I always thought that it was better like that because if it was similar to the first game it would have just felt like a copy. And also another game with Max and Chloe as protagonists wouldn't have made sense because their story had already been told, but people just didn't want to let go of the characters. Now I sometimes check twitter and the LIS subreddit, and even if the second game still gets the least attention among all the games, at least every time it gets mentioned it doesn't get a bunch of comments saying that the game is ass and should have been like the first one I haven't played this game yet (I really want to play it but i'm broke lol). I loved all the games back when the second game came out, but I had to distance myself from the LIS community because LIS1 and BtS fans were literally unbearable if you happened to like the second game. I remember on reddit LIS2 fans even had to make their own subreddit cause they couldn't post anything on the main one. This ended up being too long but I'm just so mad because the way people treated the second game was unfair

As a kid i played a lot on ps2 (basic fps and fifa) and game boy (pokemon duh), but i got bored of it and stopped for years... then i decided to try a random game called Life is Strange, and at the first scene of Max walking down the hallway i remember thinking "Wow wait what am i feeling now? What is this magic? Why am i so sad and happy at the same time?". Made me realize some games can also be work of art. I know it's far from perfect but i would still rate LIS a 12/10 for all the games i played since that i wouldn't have if not for LIS ! Great vid btw ! I adore True Colors but concede certain points made by its detractors. The LARP section is tedious and too long, the plot basically ends immediately when Alex steals Diane's flashdrive (the entire plot is inside), the world feels smaller than it should be (we never see Steph's and Ryan's houses). Also, for all the effort that went into building a complex wave of character backstories and motivations, with entire sections dedicated to earning their trust and loyalty, you'd assume their support or opposition in the final episode would matter more. But instead Alex gets justice for Gabe no matter what you do, even if the whole town turns against you. It's nice to be able to sway them to your side throughout the game and build a community, but besides making Alex feel welcome for the ending or having them come to say goodbye if Alex leaves, their support doesn't amount to anything. You can argue Alex has no reason to stay if the town turns against her, but then again she can still choose to stay for some reason. Regardless, I still like this game. I am glad it exists. But I feel like the LARP should have been replaced with more investigation segments, the town should have more areas and there should be a "bad ending" option to make the stakes higher (the game was wholesome to the detriment of the stakes).

I just finished playing TC... have always *loved* LiS (which is still the best in the series to me), wasn't as big of a fan of LiS2 (felt very heavy handed and preachy to the point where it was distracting), but TC has me split. So many interactions with characters that ultimately lead nowhere. The game is on such strong narrative rails and has characters repeating the same decisions (or changing character too abruptly), visiting the same locations, doing the same things, to the point where it's a bit too predictable. I appreciated that TC brought back some of the magic of the first LiS, exploring a town and getting to grow and form relationships--but as purpledough pointed out, the explorable Haven is just too tiny. Alex and her family are all pretty terrific characters, but being crammed into a small town story with limitations on exploration, the amount of characters you can interact with, and romancing (or choosing to remain single, which is apparently almost impossible, lol) among other things didn't help at all.

Honestly their games feel stagnant and really formulaic at this point. True Colors felt painfully stretched out with not much going on. I wish they'd try something different or to expand on the mechanics. It would have been really nice to explore the whole town they went to the effort of making in detail, even collecting clues like a proper point and click mystery but the whole thing is just so on rails. To me it doesn't even have much replay value because it's mainly just a few choices that don't really change anything and it's not like the gameplay is fun or engrossing or anything. I also don't get why they still have "episodes" when it's supposed to be a full game? Compared to other games made by companies of the same size and charging the same prize, it doesn't measure up in any way. When compared to other games the whole story is incredibly short and not even varied or sandbox.

Haven Springs was absolutely stunning. That bridge captivated from the very start. But I agree we had no freedom. At least let us actually hike the mountain to the mine or go on a walk down the river. I needed places to kidnap Ryan to. LOL. Anyways, I really and I mean REALLY disliked Ethan. The character evolution was in no way up there with Daniel and Chris of LIS2. Riley, I feel she was so underused. The only one that really felt like she could be best friends with Alex. The chapter with the lard or whatever was beyond ridiculous and I didn't enjoy it at all. I mean really, this whole town participated on this and even their social media stuff. But when Alex needs them the most at the end, they want to act like she's a plague.

Im just tired of villains getting redeemed or forgiven in general. Lis was partially so good because Jefferson was a pretty good villain. He gave me the creeps when you go back to the first day in class and you hear him slyly bring up the things he did in the dark room. He was semi believable and raised the stakes. Some of the best stories are because the villains are so memorable. It's why Batman the dark knight is praised so highly, its why Naruto feels so legendary, its why Hercules wouldn't be the same without Hades. It feels good to have a villain. Feels good to triumph against the odds against someone who's strong, intelligent, and malicious. There was potential here to have a good villain from Typhon, but it's like they were so bent on the lesson being about forgiveness that they dropped that idea. Diane should've been more cold hearted and powerful. Jed could've been like the first boss you fight and forgive but then Dianne could've been the one who was selfish and unforgivable, the one who'd go to any lengths... But no... Edit: also I realized that I forgot a lot of major plot points in this game while I was writing this... Kinda shows how immemorable the plot was

Just finished the game.... Loved the world building, characters/voice acting and setting of the game. Really liked Alex's look and personality. The game looks good, but running at 30fps on my series S can break immersion and is unacceptable. If Rdr2 runs at 60fps looking great, this game should as well. *Obviously Rock Star has more resources, but come on. It's a LIS game. The game is not long enough. Wished they stretched it for another season or two Ending is not satisfying. This game will probably not have a sequel like the other LIS games, which make the last two points worse. Since the other LIS games have never had a sequel with any of the characters, that should be a given with every game in the future right? So that being said, it's disappointing there aren't dramatically different endings to this game. Hope I'm wrong tho! Since this game is currently part of Game Pass, I'd give it a 7/10 If I had to pay full retail. Probably a 6-6.5/10

You really had me agreeing with you (esp on cost vs value) until you got to the LARP. That entire chapter is a nod to old school video games, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, etc. And I found Millennial+ people over whelmingly LOVE that chapter. It's a nod to older players and shows how much the town is a "small town" and cares for each other. I would argue it's super important. I also find the game makes it extremely clear how Alex survived the fall.

I really don't get the hate for lis2 and the love for this one. Nothing happens in TC. For me it was just kind of boring. The first one had the novelty of being a unique new game and 2 had the different chemistry between the brothers and being always on the move and never being safe. This one really just feels like the first one but more boring. It's shorter, but still feels like there's more filler. Just walking around doing nothing in, as you said a real small space, for the plot. The LARP was interesting but it lasted too long. It's double the price. In LIS2, every episode at least had something major to the plot. Ep 1 had the initial Daniel and Sean run away. Ep 2 had the police on your tail and showing how they could never stay somewhere. Ep 3 had Daniel getting independent with his powers and growing apart with Sean. Ep 4 had the return of the mother and trying to convince Sean to come with Sean, and obviously ep 5 had the enterance or lack thereof into Mexico. There are literally 2 things massive for the plot I remember happening in TC. Gabe's death casting suspicion on typhon, and Jed being the actual reason so Alex goes back to the town to convince everyone. Having characters do insignificant things with random people that is both unavoidable and unnecessary to the plot does not magically make the characters more relatable and make the story hit harder. It makes me bored and it makes me so annoyed at the game to the point that annoyance gets translated to the characters too. Also kinda upset the game lost it's artstyle. My personal favourite game is LIS2 but the *best* game in the series will always be LIS1 because it was a perfect blend of being active in the plot constantly (something LIS2 and TC lack) best exploration of the powers (in LIS2 is isn't you and in TC the power is kind of boring) and having enough characters unique enough to care about.

From a sales standpoint, it wasn't worth $60. The story was too short. I didn't "get lost in the story" like I did with LIS 1 and LIS 2 (I adored the second one!) . They could have made the story worth the price of $60. Now, from a story standpoint, it was definitely short. I finished the game in one day. I was very surprised with how fast the game went. I was very much into the game, but I wasn't expecting it to be done so soon. They had a lot of potential in expanding the story. I hope they will add more DLC's to give the game justice. At the end of the day, everyone has their own opinions. I'm not going to agree with any KZbinr's opinion, but I'll voice my own. Will I play it again? Yes, because I'm a completionist. Is it one of my favorites? No, but we have to acknowledge this game and give it some love. I guess I'm one of the rare types that I appreciate what I have, and well, I'm appreciating that we have a third LIS game. It is what it is - can't do anything or change it.

I think knowing that this franchise has very cringe and unrealistic moments is kind of a prerequisite when playing Life is Strange, which is why I hold it to different standards than I would, let's say The Last of Us. Still agree that it's highly overrated though and I don't understand the hype.

I played 3 times & never got Char nor Ryan standing up for me & I'm still missing rewards. The first game tho cool scares me. The save Chloe from the train plus the dark room maze where u are trying to avoid the teacher who keeps calling you... I sometimes get his voice in my head when I'm home alone... I also dislike it bc I heard in another video that it was gonna be way different, specifically something to do with the Prescott family. I don't remember if there was anything I REALLY didn't like in lis2 or bts.

Hello everyone, just my worthless opinion here if anyone cares. The thing I noticed about LiS: TC that bothered me was the atmosphere didn’t feel as strong as the first game. Playing the first game really made you feel like you were immersed in the game. Like the whole atmosphere was so beautiful and they captured it perfectly with all the nature graphics and the multiple places you ventured in (the diner, the junkyard, chloe’s home, etc). The other thing is that I don’t feel as strong of a connection with Ryan and Steph the way I felt connected to Chloe or even Kate for that matter. Idk maybe it’s just me, but I felt way less of a bond, or connection, with the characters in TC. I felt kinda distanced from them even. I think the overall plot and storyline was good, just needs a little polishing here and there. The idea of taking down a large company that k1lled your brother is a great storyline. The game is good, the story is good, but… it feels like something is missing? Like there’s a huge LiS element that’s just entirely missing from the game. Just my thoughts tho. Also, this might sound weird, but the graphics seem too improved now lol. Idk I really liked the more artsy style the first game had. These realistic graphics they’re doing now kinda takes away from the atmosphere of the game.

I feel like they're trying to make it too new and updated. Unless Dontnod had some kind of agreement to keep that art style as their own this game should really have kept it. The style was a huge part of what made the first games so good and unique, they're instantly recognisable, whereas TC could be just about any new graphics game. One of Dontnods more recent games Tell Me Why is a great example of how you can keep that more arty style but still have updated graphics and beautiful environments. Personally I feel like that game is a better LIS3 than True Colours really with great story, graphics, characters and setting. Sometimes I just replay parts of that game to relax and explore in the world they made.

i enjoyed it but i think since i played it right after lis 2 that it felt so watered down with it's 'heavy' subjects. Like the dementia and a mother's guilt over resenting her child. it was like woah that's interesting to 'that was it?' felt unrealistic and I didn't care for Alex, like i did with Max and Sean. Everytime I replay those games my heart aches for the pain to come, especially Sean. I felt literally nothing in the 'big' reveals. Which is ironic for a game based on emotions.

I know it's unrelated to the design, but my experience was even more insane because many textures were broken and replaced with the Unreal default texture, and that was last month, 5 months after launch. When I started episode 2, while everyone was mourning Gabe's death, I was laughing my ass off seeing everyone with checkerboard clothes, including Steph's face. Alex's clothes also broke during the larp making it even more silly but also ruining some potentially great screenshots.

I know that probably noone will read this, cuz it is a long time after this video release, but my feeling about TC is that it lost the two main features of the original game: relatable characters, and the bittersweet taste of the consequences of your choices. LiS 2 already has lost some of that, but you could still relate to the main characters and in that way put yourself kinda into the game. And TC has none of it. Yes - the characters are well written, but we simply do not spend enough time with them to build any kind of a bond. And whatever you do, the story seems so... safe. I mean, that in Lis1 and the Before the Storm addon, there was always an underlaying feeling that whatever you do, things will go bad in the end. Sort of a Damocles' sword hanging somewhere above. TC - it just simply doesn't have it. And the bittersweetness of the first story - also in the BtS - just when you get to know Rachel's character enough to somewhat care for her - you get the scene with her phone, and Chloe calling over and over again. And the camera flashes in the background...

I felt a lot of these similar opinions, I was thinking maybe I was crazy since when it came out there was so much praise for it, by critics and some of my friends who played it. Alex is probably my first or second favorite protagonist in LiS, but overall the game felt watered-down.

In my opinion, the series should never have became a series. Life is Strange is the only good game in the series in my opinion. The other games pale in comparison to Dontnod’s original with the concept of time reversal. I just don’t see where it’s going - people get powers; okay, and for what reason? what relevance do they, their power, and their relationships serve? I feel like the original is the only game in the “series” that has been able to answer this. I also genuinely don’t care about any of the other characters in the other instalments, they all just feel so two dimensional and boring. Whereas in the original life is strange, each character has their own personality, struggles and indirect plot, e.g. Kate Marsh’s bullying side plot, and Dana being pregnant. I think the series also needs to be taken away from Deck Nine as I don’t think they have much talent in terms of narrative writing, creating an interesting plot and making the game engaging. I struggle to remember much that happened in True Colors and if I’m honest, I’m not even anticipating or even remotely excited for another game in the series. Nothing will beat the original.

Sadly I think we'll have to sit back and watch as Enix and Deck9 slowly kill off Life is Strange. Their making huge money and a lot of success from it so they're going to take advantage of that. Even just the 'remaster' of the first game and BTS shows that. Not huge improvements yet the game costs twice as much. That's insane for a game that the original isn't that old AND still available. LIS1= $29, LIS1 Remaster = $60. True Colours = $90 PLUS about an extra $30 if you want the Steph story and outfit packs. That's too much for any game, especially one that is only about 10 hours long

You're absolutely right. I've loved all the lis games I've played (I haven't played 2, as soon as I can I will, it looks cool), they have great vibes and the characters all seem appealing, at first anyway. True Colours is beautiful, but I just felt so underwhelmed. There wasn't a story, we didn't really do that much. In lis even if your choices still led to the same place, they did have a bit more of an impact on what happened, but in True Colours there was just nothing? Like the relationships between characters weren't established enough and your choices changed hardly anything. All the endings were basically identical as well, they weren't some dramatic thing. I liked it, it's such a shame they didn't do more.

Can we stop taking IGN rating seriously. A 9/10 from IGN is like the Best Seller stamp on a book. While I loved this game I agree that it was to short. I think it needed more episodes and it would've benefited from the whole 5 chapter rule that LiS has stuck by.

I like the game but I feel like it’s only as popular as it is because it plays off of Nostalgia for the original. Even when I first saw the trailer, my only thoughts were 1) this looks really cool and interesting, I can’t wait for it to be released 2) This is completely unnecessary, it doesn’t even have the same characters Of course I was excited, I loved the original and I knew the developers are great at making games. But I didn’t understand why they made it. It has no connection to the original whatsoever. They just used the name to get popularity. I also feel this way with LiS 2. I loved being back in the world and I liked the game, but I never understood why they made it.

I have very mixed feelings about the series as a whole. I think that LIS 1 is really good in concept and it has some great moments, but it also has some very questionable moments and I think it could have executed some of its ideas much better. Before the Storm, at least in my opinion, is awful it's the worst one and actively makes many of the issues in the first game even worse. Captain Spirit was.... fine? could hardly be called a game really. LIS 2 started off amazing in my opinion but very quickly lost momentum and eventually, I just lost interest in it. I was hoping the True Colors would be a step in the right direction and while in a sense it is a positive step, it was, at least for me, the dullest LIS game so far, to the point where I couldn't get through the entire thing I was just too disinterested to really care about the scenario and the characters. It was technically very good, but the narrative just never interested me...

true colors was too ?happy? for me.. (i know that sounds really depressing) but the thing i love about the lis games is the melancholic feel they had to them, the ending of true colours was too perfect and lacked any real emotion or the kind of bitter sweetness the others did. i didn’t hate the story and i liked the message about belonging and all that, but none of it resonated with me and left no lasting impression..

I did really enjoy the really dark tone of the story and just the ability to walk around a part of town. Even though the locations were limited and choices felt less diverse, True Colors is definitely a step in the right direction going forward for the series. I could see them improving on it in future entries.

I'm also a huge fan of mxmtoon. 50% of the reason I bought this game was because she sang for it lol. I really liked all the songs (originals and covers) she did for the game. i really like this game because of the powers coming back and admittingly not the most crazy power like the first game where you can rewind time and all that jazz i do think this has overall a more slice of life feel for the adults this time around because, she does have to work at the bar for a solid 2 episodes, while shes trying to uncover the truth about the mines that typhon has been metaling with since the end of the 1st episode. i think its a solid ranking from me and i do think that the power did fit alex and did manage to keep it grounded in reality at the end of the day its a solid 8 out of 10 for me just wish there was more content overall because the stuff that was there was amazing!!! I think a few more hours of story would have been fine to round it out from a 6 to 8 hour story to about 10 to 13!

(I wanted to post this on Reddit but it is impossible to post on the LiS Reddit so I’m leaving a long ass rant here, I would appreciate if you responded!) So I really don't understand what Typhon was doing with "Rhea". Why is it necessary, over ten entire years after an accident to physically bury the location where a definetly known about incident occurred? Like, if all those people died it's not like they could bury the fact they died completely. And given how long that time distance is, why was it so important that it happened that night and they found it necessary to potentially kill people including a child in order to "cover up" this location where nobody ever goes instead of waiting a single day? Also, I was really disappointed by this game. As someone who played and loved the other games, this one felt soulless. I got the high score on the arcade game in the bar and Alex looks at the machine and says the exact same thing she said before I played it. In chapter 2 or 3 she says "ah the holder of the high score, ASS." As if she isn’t the top name. Then in chapter four she says "Watch your back, ASS." AS IF SHE HASN'T HAD THE HIGH SCORE EVER SINCE THE DAY SHE GOT THERE. At the end of chapter 4, I chose to sign the contract and stop chasing Typhon to protect Ryan, Steph and Alex. Then she goes home talking about "This isn't over" like I didn't make that choice. Jed tries to kill me and says "I thought the pictures would scare you out of it but they didn't" when I literally made the choice to stop trying to go against Typhon BECAUSE he and Pike successfully scared me off?? And apparently that choice just affects Pike believing me or not at the end, which I find annoying. Barely any music in cut scenes, no end of chapter cut scenes, for example when chapter 1 ended I was on the verge of tears with Alex shouting down to Gabe, then it just cuts abruptly to black. Nearly the entirety of the last chapter is spent in Alex's head, once we finally get out we confront Jed for like 8 straight minutes and when he finally breaks down the scene just ends and cuts to a radio station talking about his "tearful confession" that they didn't show us. For some reason even though I was only ever nice to him, Ryan didn't believe me at the end, and I didn't get to see his reaction to Jed's confession, or get to see him at all for the rest of the whole ending despite him being one of Alex’s best friends. All that I wanted to see from the moment chapter 4 ended was everyone's reactions to what Jed did, but the scene just ended without getting to see. Alex talking to Gabe in her head was fine, no issue with that, I thought it was interesting. Talking to him in real life towards the end of chapter 5 came out of absolutely nowhere, unlike when they did that multiple times in BTS as Chloe's entire character was her speaking with her Dad and having consistent vivid dreams talking to him. Super werid to have him describing the future life of staying in Haven which was so much longer than the ending that I actually chose to hit the road with Steph. The go on the road with Steph ending is super underwhelming, being a one minute cut scene where Alex is about to perform on a stage without Steph for some reason and then it just cuts. But even after all those disappointments, I'm mainly just annoyed at how much the main plot point of this game makes seemingly no sense whatsoever. They were setting off blasts to "bury" evidence of a tragedy that happened over a decade ago? Jed really needed to kill Alex that night when she just signed a contract saying she would agree to stop trying to "defame or bring harm to" Typhon, and her only possible evidence she had is inadmissible and she no longer has it, and he still needed to kill her ASAP?? I really just want an explanation because I feel like I need to be wrong about this, there's no way this is written as badly as it seems to be. (I’m also extremely mad about the arcade game thing. Why can I get the high score if I don’t even get a voice line about it afterwards? Did NONE of the play testers play the playable arcade game??”
