Here is what the director said about the negative reviews: "There’s a disconnect between something that is happening between our primarily white male critics who don’t like anything that has any emotion".

Hearing your opening about being alone in the theater: if I ever owned & operated a movie theater, I'd set movie theaters aside and call them "riff arenas"

I expected this to be as pretentious as you're describing, the only trailer that I've seen was Oscar Issacs telling Olivia Wilde that he hadn't asked her out yet because he was waiting for the right moment, since it was going to be the last thing he was going to do before his life would revolve around how perfect she and their love would be and her smiling then cutting to explaining how every person is the hero of their own story whether they actually be a hero or a villain. It screamed vapid Oscar bait to me.

"Emotionally sadistic" I crack myself up. Also, I should not be saying "What?" as often as I did in a review about a movie referencing both Bob Dylan and Pulp Fiction.

You see, that's why you should always listen to your wife... and did Brad & Sarah REALLY make it through the review or were they actually dead all along? Dun dun DAH!

A Star is Born looks really good but I saw a really well edited parody of it with Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog and now I don't think I can unsee it.

Read the Vox review of this. They absolutely hated it, and made some very valid points about its flaws. It seemed their biggest problem with it is that they presented a bunch of serious issues for the sake of adding angst without delving into the ramifications those events would have on the individuals who deal with them.

This movie might have the most pretentious title. The only other film I can only imagine that would have this title would be a P A R O D Y .

Is it wrong that I may want the Suspiria review to be the Brad and Sarah Show?

I had heard Sacha Baron Cohen dropped out of the movie because he wanted the story to be grittier, to talk more about Freddie's drug use and eventual death from AIDS, but Queen wanted it to be more of a non-controversial, glossy portrait of his life and time with the band and so they parted ways.

Pretentious movies make for some great Midnight Screenings - see also By The Sea.

Add this to the list of audience reviews saying critics are trolls for hating this

When I saw previews for this, I thought it was gonna be like "This Is Us" and be cheesy, sappy, and emotionally manipulative. Sounds batshit instead.

So no Roger Ebert?

Is this "This is Us" meets Collateral Beauty meets Cloud Atlas?
