This video remind of something I read in a book: "A good player works hard to win the game everyone else is playing. A *great* player creates a new game that favors their strengths and avoids their weaknesses" In other words; when you can't win by being better than everyone else, you can win by being different than everyone else

It seems like just about everyone is having the same eruption of motivation and creativity from Ken Ashcorp's work about the same time. Like I just tripped over this video today, but in December of 2023 I decided that I was gonna dive headfirst into retro programming after "On The Rocks" shattered my anxiety. I've had ups and downs since then, but every screwup, every self-doubt has just pointed me to another path I could try until I get ideas to get further down the first one. I feel genuinely happy and fulfilled for the first time I can remember, and I credit it all to Ken Ashcorp.

i love kens music as well (at least to a degree) my favourite musician is will wood, and i guess he fits into that category as well, that "i wanna do the things i wanna do and be proud of them" he writes his songs, and his merch designs are also mostly drawn by himself as well. he has an interesting style of writing lyrics and art. and even if they can be wierd, i think hes just neat ive heard friends say that ken was very defensive about his music, and from what youve said it might have been a misunderstanding. but i loved that video! anyways uh gabagool

This is definitely something necessary message to hear around self-reflection and resolution season. This year I've felt a declining confidence in my art and I ascertained it up to drawing only stuff that is in the confines of what the friends I show it off to would like. I wanted to open a public gallery this year and formerly start my at career, but I just couldn't find the confidence to do so when I'm not really drawing ideas I have a lot of confidence and passion in. My resolution next year will be to draw for myself more than i do others, and gain that much needed confidence to open up a gallery to anybody who likes what I have to offer.

I would go so far as to say that for forums, simply having a like/dislike system is bad for discussion and prone to echo chambers because you can just dislike a post without providing any reason why. Reddit's karma thing is just ridiculous and completely turns "discussion" into "popularity contest."

Ngl this video is hitting kind of a personal moment of mine. I used to be really silent, socialy anxious and stuff. Recently I am doing my best embrace how i truly feel, both as an artist and a person. Just be yourself. It'll make you happier. Even if you had to tune yourself or your art down 20-30%, it's still better than being/makeing something 100% different. cheers.

People care too much about what others think of them and worry about being cringey. Just be you. You will be so much happier and enjoy your life more if you do. This was something I saw through all of the 2010's people stopped being themselves and were afraid of expressing themselves. People were always weird. Pretending you're not is lying to yourself. We're just all weird in our own unique different ways

I've heard Ken Aschorp For a Long time, and i didn't considered what he might have passed at the time creating these songs i really liked them afterall but, the Internet Collective conscious that only likes what is Familair to them is as true as the Collective of people who is fascinated by the Weird, the New, and the Deranged, no wonder that Ken, was able to find his audience.What i took of this video is that Conformism and perhaps even The Pygamalion effect to a certain extent Can get in the way of how Artists make their Art and their satisfaction in doing so.
@xerzy10 ай бұрын
Gotta be honest. It's mainly harming others and myself that has stopped me from being confident. It seems people around me just haven't liked my personality. At all. So it was a matter of respect and survival, even. It's not just numbers on a screen, it can be about repressive environments where it wouldn't go down well for anyone involved. Don't believe me? Look at politicians talking about " _eradicating transgenderism from public life entirely_ " (and how popular that opinion is on US polls) or spreading lies about children being given litter boxes at schools. It's not being ashamed of being cringe that's stopping you there, it's those who cannot stand what your identity and personality mean. No matter if they're right or wrong or evil or well-meaning, that's just how it is. That said, you're absolutely right. And thanks to my family gradually opening up and a gf who has taught me to truly be myself again, I'm now trying to do something about it. Just, wish it was easier. Good luck on your journey!

Ken expert here. The complete story with Ken's rise (and very likely fall) is a much more complicated matter, especially if you've been diving deeper into his past content. When Ken A started out, his main brand of content has been musical shitpost, much like the rest of the internet at the time. Some of his earlier tracks included one about how gay he is for Artosis of all people. He also used to have an alt account titled ForeverPandering, which was dedicated to short musical blurbs, memes, and later commentary. Ken first got on the people's radar in four ways: through "20% Cooler", based on MLP:FiM, "PvP", his #1 winning entry in the BlizzCon 2011 fan song contest, "Touch Fluffy Tail", which you already mentioned in the video, and "Hey There, Would You Like To Talk About Homestuck", which got posted on his alt account, all of which relate to ongoing trends at the time. Sometime around 2011, Ken made several commentary videos on his alt account, which covered drama concerning various aspects of early-2010s gaming and internet culture, which also gained some minor viewership at the time. And internet wasn't nearly as nice to Ken as it might seem. Hell, for a moment, he appeared to be 4chan's personal punching bag for at least several months in 2012. I'm not fully certain what the deal was, but he was an EXTREMELY polarizing presence in that era of Newgrounds and KZbin for certain. In late 2012, he decided to nuke his alt because it was receiving an overwhelming amount of negative attention, partly because of him making content people didn't expect. Being honest, I respect this decision quite a bit, and I think it shows an aspect of this video's message in it. That being said, he did block his comment sections from comments entirely from 2014 to 2016, for the aforementioned reasons. In regards to the "downfall" bit at the beginning, I believe Ken is succumbing somewhat to what you said happens to most creators. For the past 6 years, Ken hasn't dropped a single f-bomb, his upload rate decreased, and even his more sexually-charged songs of his recent work are weirdly apologetic and self-inconfident. Moreover, I think Ken has started to primarily rely on his cover art for his "family-unfriendly" image, all of which is made by artists other than him. In short, I don't think Ken is as shining of an example of this "confidently-raunchy furry weaboo brit who makes extremely weird music and loves it" as he was about 10 years ago. Mind you, this is just the short version. There are a lot more details, but I didn't know how to insert them without getting sidetracked.

As a creator, I've felt the ups and downs of being carried by either following my passion and occasional bursts of motivation from finding something new and wanting to do something badly for it...or algorithm and approval pressure. For example, I've experienced the former when I've every now and then tried some silly montage editing for videos of games I've visited or revisited (I know for sure there hasn't been that many that have uttered the name of Thrill Drive recently outside of Video Game Esoterica but I felt compelled to do something with the way crashes look in this game after I played it)- but there were also a handful of writing projects and interviews I had done these past few years and in retrospective they sure remind me of the potential I have. ...On the other hand, there's stuff that I've seen that I've attempted that sometimes has blown out of proportion but I haven't felt *nor* been able to get back to doing something related to those (people somehow found my Megaman Zero Online montages...but the game servers have been defunct as of months ago) and sometimes yeah, numbers fluctuating depending of what I experiement with have kinda deterred me at times to continue polishing certain ideas or revisit them. And of course relying on metrics on what people do or don't support is a crapshoot, but you get when it can happen to lower your mood and motivation when something you cooked passionately with gets the lukewarm sight- and yet at least in my case when I think in trying to do something more algorithm focused...I can't get my mood stick with it because I'm aware how I'm not really doing with energy of myself. Most recently there had been this Neocities website I had started where so far it has been the most recent thing I've absolutely pouring my creativity into since it is a space where I can customize to my liking *and* is something that I can update without having metrics in my face, even thinking about porting stuff from my wordpress site into it as it seems nicer for formatting as well, and I had also recently released a video that I had been wanting to make for months if not a whole year but only recently I was able to finish one part in a way that I felt confident of...but probably might have been finished before if I hadn't been looking left and right about not only the approach but also seeking "feedback" about whether it was alright or not. There's probably more I would and could write about this as how I've definitely fought with those demons time to time...but for now and to wrap this absurdly long comment, this is definitely a video that I'm glad to see encouraging others to just aim to be creative and confident on what they want to do instead of what the algorithm might seem to tell you what to do, and quoting your words, avoid to be someone that "only does things when success and approval are guaranteed...*which is never*", strive to rather "proving that you want to personally make *is worth it*". I'm definitely going to note down this one on today's journal entry because it is a very impotant message, and related to that, I do want to try drawing more often as I sometimes do, but put up my sketches and such in that aforementioned neocities page instead of Twitter just to know that I can have the stuff I've tried somewhere where I'm comfortable keeping them shared...and likely impulse me to try doing more to stick there just because it looks neat instead of fishing favorites (because that often doesn't go well and makes me feel that I shouldn't pick up a pen). Alright now for real, take care you bird goober- go listen some Takenobu Mitsuyoshi music now that we are on the note of music recommendations

Also I think you're right, the reason why Ken Ashcorp's music stands out is because it clearly is made by someone with passion instead of "Well this will get me views..."
@Ducksen10 ай бұрын
You definitely make a good point. I think if I had to elaborate, I think there's a dissonance in what the internet *says* it wants, and what actually gets views. There are so many comments on all my boobie animations asking why I even made the video or hating on the character, and yet, they still get views. My qualms come from wanting success making stuff that ISN'T boobie animations - meanwhile Ken is finding success doing exactly what he wants to do.

I was so annoyed that people would get so angry over a reference then i thought about it and wondered why i even cared I have cencored my language so much over the years and even still a milquetoast refrence to a dead meme offended people. So now im just done caring if its going offend people anyway will say what i want to say and do what i want to do. It is not my intention to offend so if people feel that way its their issue. ive even shifted the writing style of my new project slightly to ajust for this. Lucky for me i just started this project so it may be a blessing in disguise it wont be much difference right now since its still early on but the future could see me write in a different way.
