Hi Nicole..It’s taken me to the age of 77 to get the wisdom that you have at your young age. What a beautiful life you will have. Congratulations on learning all that you know already. I’m not working anymore. Slaved away as an unappreciated nurse for 25 years. The really good thing I did was having my son who became an entrepreneur and sends me money every month. I live in a really nice retirement home in Kirkland Quebec, live alone in a studio, do paintings and crafts for fun and living the life I always dreamed of. My daughter and granddaughter were here for Xmas day and the husband as well. Had the best time with my 6 year old granddaughter in the pool. You are a remarkable young woman! Love ❤️ Margaret M.

Margaret...my husband and I are nurses as well for the past 17yrs...we know what you mean. Took us about 7yrs into the nursing gig to figure out what the score was. Glad you are taking time for yourself after giving for so many years, you earned it! I have always home schooled our now 12yr old son so hopefully he can grow up outside of the indoctrination system that schools tend to be (public schools seem to be institutions designed to make compliant employees for the elites). I think it is great the younger folks seem to be figuring out that the jig is rigged quickly, and that more are figuring out the college scam as well. It gives me hope for a better future for society. I think the internet has changed the playing field and made it easier for the younger set to figure things out. Information transfers at higher rates with more voices so the truth is easier to discern. So don't be hard on yourself. My husband and I are both in our early 40s, and we grew up just before the explosion of internet and cell phones. Ergo we can see the world as it was before and after in our formative years which is interesting (to be an elder millennial/young gen x straddling the two generations). Grew up learning the dewey decimal system with no caller ID on the landline, but graduated college with cell phones and internet.

It bothers me when I hear about nurses, teachers and medical residents being treated poorly. Glad you're enjoying your retirement life. Be happy you're not working as a nurse now because it sounds even worse in some hospitals today.

In the1990's, I worked for a major retailer as a cashier. Getting scheduled breaks was okay, but needing an unscheduled bathroom trip could be difficult. One day I accidentally kicked the wires under the cash register. A connector came apart. I started to put it back together, but then I heard something... every single cash register at checkout went down! 😯 I plugged it back in, all the registers came up. All of the cash registers were linked together. 😂 I had the POWER!!! 💪 Anytime someone needed to go, I would casually kick the connector apart, and everything came to a halt. 😊 We didn't abuse though, just used it when there was an urgent need. The managers would scurry to the computer room, but no one EVER figured it out. 🥳

I work in a place like that I work there 25 years…one day I just pack up my stuff and walked out . They said I left them in a mess I told them no they put themselves in a mess for being for being rude uncaring and didn’t appreciate what a hard worker like me.

25 years? I would have left the first week. I had a really bad boss once and he tried to get me to do things that were not part of my job and worked hard to get me fired. I wanted to transfer to another department at this large corporation, but he didn't want me to move on because he hated me. I hired an attorney and the company ended up demoting him from manager to standard employee. 😅

I snapped & quit my job after 10 years this July. It was completely unplanned & I’m still unemployed. at first I had instant regret & anxiety about my future. But now that my mental health has improved immensely & I’m the happiest I’ve been in years (nearly 10 to be exact) I thank god for that mental break. I would probably still be there if it wasn’t for that snap. Whatever happens in the future isn’t as bleak as being there another minute.

I think employers may not give detailed explanations of why you are getting fired is because it gives you information for a lawsuit to argue how you were discriminated against or treated unfairly. If they say nothing then you have a harder time making a case, which is usually not a worthwhile pursuit anyway. Glad you learned from your firing. Often the end of a job is a door to a new AND BETTER opportunity.

They probably have nothing to sue for, anyways. I've found those types of employers, if they're a small business, have no real assets to speak of. The business makes just enough to cover the owners' expenses and make payroll.

Oh, I also went to an interview a couple of years ago that was so weird! I was early for my appt time, but just sat and sat. I was alone in the tiny waiting room. People would peek through the blinds at me, but if I looked back, the blinds would snap shut. Strange. Not to mention, my gut was in knots, and the little voice was telling me over and over that I was making a mistake, and to get up and leave. I waited a reasonable amount of time, (I'd been there 40 minutes), and then I got up and walked out. The lady who had scheduled my appt emailed me later demanding to know what happened. I just told her I was taking my career in another direction and didn't want the job. It felt so good when I walked out!! 😊

I worked at a coupon clearing house. It was pretty much as you describe your job and everyone was miserable. The supervisor went well past "Christine" level. Rude, mean and uneducated, she was hell to work with. I was sitting in the lunchroom one day and another employee was talking about the time she had a fist fight with the manager. Apparently the woman had no problem swinging on someone if she got pissed off enough. That was it for me. I clocked out that day and never went back. I can't imagine why they kept a manager or any employee who was violent but they did.

This happens a lot in service companies -- firms that are contracted by a larger (better) employer -- to do menial tasks, like mailroom, cafe, etc. I've seen fistfights on the floor, screaming, yelling, walkouts with profanity. People just leave and never come back. The pay is abysmal and they work you like a machine. If you ever find yourself in that situation, get out ASAP.

Im an old guy now and just found you (better late than never!) and lost someone precious to me after a long marriage through illness --so, so, many parallels with you the way i view life and my late wife was also very much like you and your outlook on life and all the trials and tribulations working for unapreciative freeloading employers who can only see your faults and not their own. I guess trusting very few humans in life is the best way to go as many just wanting something for nothing from you Governments, councils, and many others. A sad reflection on life looking backwards on a lifetime.

I worked for this mom n pop day care center as a bus driver/maintenance person. They said that working for them was being family, too.... When an employer says you're like family, that means they expect you to do things for free and they're gonna take advantage of you like they do with family. And the boss's wife did get really abusive towards me toward the end. They did effed up things like clocking people out without telling them, I wasn't the only one. They paid biweekly, and if someone worked overtime by friday, they clock the person out early the next week and then report no overtime for the two weeks. I would drive for them during the summer for field trips and they would screw me on overtime and would reduce my hours because of lunch breaks, even though I was there with the kids on the trip. They were greedy AF and they and the location manager had no qualms about screwing they're employees out of hours. I worked there for about a year before I told them it was the last straw.

The toilet story reminds me of when I was a kid. My mum’s friend had a cuckoo clock that no one was supposed to touch. My family, including my two brothers, were visiting this family friend and when no one was around, I pulled on one of the chains hanging down. Apparently, that clock wasn’t working, my pulling on that chain started it working. That woman lined my brothers and I up in front of that cuckoo clock, marching back and forth yelling and screaming who had touched her clock. I was terrified and couldn’t say anything. I refused to admit that it was me…I never liked this friend of my mother’s. She was always really spiteful to us when we were all kids. I never forgot that incident and the many other things that she said and did…One day, my younger brother brought up that incident. I admitted that it was me who had done it; he was shocked! It took 30 years for me to admit to that aloud that’s how traumatizing that incident was to a little kid!

I was taught that there were four criteria a job applicant and employer should answer before making an employment decision. 1. Do I like them? 2. Do I trust them? 3. Will they be a pleasure to do business with? 4. Am I confident they will produce? Many supervisors cannot differentiate between dominance and leadership.

I was fired after eight months working for a Volkswagen dealer in Groningen, The Netherlands, because they needed to give the job to the son (read: spoiled brat) of another car dealer. That guy who got my job and I ran into each other three times within' a year after I left. The first time I could tell him that I was lucky enough to find a new job on very short notice and it also paid much better. The second time we met I had the news that my salary was up that much that they paid me nett what Volkswagen paid gross. The third time we met that year he acted as if he didn't see me😊

Wow. If you didn't live in Canada, I'd swear we worked at the same place, lol. I just quit a job last month after being there for 7 weeks. Very similar to your place ... timed and monitored all day long, crazy managers, nepotism. The most absurd thing to me was helping a woman look for the sugar in the fully stocked breakroom. A coworker came in and saw us. Then she informed us that "it's locked up in the Accounting Manager's Office." By that point, I didn't need to ask "why?" They didn't want the junior employees your age to get hopped up on sugar and distracted from their work, lol. I ignored the warning signs and bad Indeed reviews. I had to quit twice - the first time, they sucked me back in. But as I search for a better job fit, I'm reminded to trust my gut and run from the positions that just feel off. I worked for a husband and wife owned company. The wife oversaw the office and the husband out in the field. I worked in the office. Is started out okay but the giant (and tasteless) political poster outside should have been the first red flag. I’m not really red or blue at this time of my life but these people were hardcore republicans. The wife would walk around in political tirades aimed at just anyone who would listen. She would scream and yell at us from her office. She was also just very racist, often implying that the white race was superior. I could go on and on but one day I really had enough. I cleaned up my desk and finished up any odds and ends. Then I typed up a notice, printed it out and I took it into her office. I handed it right to her and basically said “this is my notice of resignation and I’ll finish out the week if you want.” This was only because there was a stipulation that if you didn’t give at least one week notice then they could hold your pay. In the letter it said I was quitting due to a hostile working environment. She didn’t fight it, she just said I was free to leave. It wasn’t a bad job but she was / likely is just a terrible person.

I worked for a small business ran by a husband and wife. They were very hard work. My gut was warning me at the interview that this job may not go well. Managed 21 months there before falling out out of favour with them. They weren`t quite as bad as Christine and Dick but they were nit picky over trivial problems and were in general mentally exhausting to work for. I couldn`t even get past my first week there for inadvertently messing up their stationery cupboard system. Shame really because I enjoyed the work and most of the other coworkers were nice. Not the worst job I ever had though.

This kind of environment not only creates bad mental health but also terrible workplace morale. Back in the 1990s I experienced some egregious sexual harassment and reported it to my boss, who reported it to the vice president, who told everyone at work to stop speaking to me. I was so distraught I finally quit, but I started my own business, which I had wanted to do anyway, so I had the same feeling as you: It was the best thing to happen to me; I make way more money, I work at home, and I'm respected and appreciated by my clients. When the boss's wife works there, that is a warning that the job SUCKS. As for places where several family members are employed, you may as well move into their house, because they fight at the workplace like they fight at home.

Yes!!! I had a situation like this last week. I called out the second day when teachers were supposed to report to work due to a family member being in the hospital (life support). I sent an email to my admins, lead teacher and other co-workers in the middle of the night as we had to leave our house and drive 2 hours to get there. The admins never responded to me at all. Never ask if things are OK with us...nothing! So everything you are saying is the absolute truth. They feel like because life happens, I have somehow offended them. I AM SO DONE WITH BEING AN EMPLOYEE!!! At this point, I would rather live in my car to cut cost than to continue working there. I am working on leaving soon.

I think a lot of people can relate and many people feel stuck. I worked at a call center and it was sheer hell. From an overbearing coworker, to a clueless manager; the turnover was high. The crème de la crème was when there was a big snow storm coming and they asked us to sleep on cots in the call center, for fear they wouldn't have enough people. There were plenty of hotels in the area they could have put us up in, but they decided to go the cheap route. there are many horror stories about this job. One day I got fed up, and I announced I was quitting. They asked me to reconsider, but even with more money and benefits, it wasn't worth it

I worked at one of these kinds of companies. I was working in a department that was never treated that way. One 12-hour shift I worked on the assembly line of people who mostly were treated like that; still, the people giving out that kind of treatment would not treat us that way. Worst 12-hour shift of my life. I never did it again, and one guy who had the same job as me walked out during that shift and never returned. I knew that it was one of the worst companies in the city to work for, but I took the job anyway. I had just begun to receive enough stabilizing mental health medication to hold down a job, and I wanted to hold down a job. I quit after a few months because the place was making me sick from inhaling forklift tire dust. They never cleaned the place, and they never hired anyone to clean it. I got a better job the next month.

Here in Portland, Oregon metro its super common to work 50-60 hrs a week. Even when they say 40hrs its really 45hrs where you have 1hr of unpaid breaks a day. I don't understand why anyone would work more than 40hrs. It drives me crazy. OT is supposed to deter employers from requiring it, but in Portland if you have enough mandatory OT you basically get a free employee. And plenty of simps willing to sacrifice their life to a slightly larger paycheck. Those same ppl have no idea how to budget a checkbook so they over spend and now NEED that OT to live. Thereby increasing the prices on everything everywhere. I'm not lazy, but my life has value. It's worth a lot more than time and a half.

Weird she brought up the Amazon warehouse jobs. That was my worst job. I thought I was going to finish grad school and get a cool job at a national lab but that was the spring covid happened, the lab did a hiring freeze and I had to get a job at the newly opened Amazon warehouse to survive. I made it 8 months before I got fired for a safety violation. I took like two steps on the robotics floor without my safety vest on that stops the robots near me.

In the mid nineties I worked a horrific ten days a a telemarketing job. Your job description sounds precisely like what I experienced. I felt horrible doing the job. I didn't feel like my job helped anyone. It felt predatory. Horrible jobs though really do make you appreciate good opportunities and pleasant work environments more. Basic common decency is getting more rare. When you spoke of the phrase," We're like family" that's always a trigger for me to run. Not all families are kind and nurturing. In fact many are brutal and toxic. I thought about your Boss' nephew. How miserable it must have been for him to have to sit at the same table for Birthday party,Holiday or other family function with his Unvle/ Boss!!!

I worked in a warehouse 4 years ago. My schedule got suddenly changed, with starting time from 7AM, to 5AM. I told my boss that this change would have made things complicated, since there are no busses at those early hours and I have no car. The only thing he responded was "have you not considered buying a car?". I biked to work in any weather condition at 4AM, for the following 6 months. Needless to say I ended up resigning, I just could not stand the alarm at 3.30AM, my sleeping schedule was a mess and my health, both mental and physical, got worse, leading to "too many sick days", which got me a warning. The only thing I regret was not standing up for myself and not quit straight away. Some companies deserve nothing.

I had the experience of working a job that I would cry my eyes out every day. That boss was giving out personal attacks daily, not just to me, ,but to a few particular persons. It took me 4 months to recover from my depression. But today, I thank God for this experience, as I may still be super naive and see the world perfectly if I didn't have such an experience.

Absolutely trust your gut. I would go one step further and say trust in synchronicities too. For one of my wife's jobs, as soon as she got there on her first day (or maybe it was the interview), several warning lights on the dashboard lit up. She hated the job and was out of there within two months. In retrospect, she should have heeded that warning.

Funny story- My friend worked for a company with that type of boss/ environment. they decided one Friday that they needed to have a meeting at the end of the day around 4:30 PM. Everyone shuffles into the meeting room. The meeting starts and one of the executives says oh I need to use the restroom. I’ll be right back. Long story short he left and never came back no phone call or anything. On Monday everyone quit. 😂

Near the end of the toilet story it occurred to me that "Christine" was a narcissist and that was why she fired you and probably fired everyone she could get away with firing in spite of the fact that it costs money to start a new hire. I had one of those. He blamed it on a temp agency for two years before they stopped hiring from a temp agency.

I thought the same. Christine wanted to humiliate Nicole,but she couldn't and that pushed her over the edge. She could prove that Nicole was in the bathroom but not that she used the toilet. And to be honest,a person could use the toilet, wash their hands,and walk out without noticing this was happening. It's very plausible that could happen because so overflows are slow.

My first two jobs were owner managers and there is no way I'd ever work for a company like that again. They are the worst places to work for, they treat you like crap, always expect unpaid overtime and seem to think they are doing you a favor. Recently I was unemployed for quite a while and I managed to get an interview at the place and they happened to mention the owner would be my boss and I'd be the only one doing that particular job. I told them I wasn't interested.

Hi Nicole - You should use a Brita water filter for your tea. It will make your tea taste a lot better. Especially for your Breville Espresso machine. Tap water is hard and you will get carbon build up on your Espresso machine which could damage your machine or need descaling more often. Plus your coffee will taste a lot better. The Brita filter water will remove bitterness from your coffee.

I want to laugh about your record company job but it is so unbelievably ridiculous that I didn't laugh. I mean, people like "Christine" really exist out there! It blows my mind! I'm almost 67 years old and retired, but the crap so many people put up with (until they are fired or just quit) is another reminder that being retired is such a relief to me! Thanks for your "tell it like it is" style. This old man finds it refreshing.

I am 62 and now retired. I started working at 16 years old. My first boss was the worst boss I have ever worked for. He was miserable to work with if he lost at the horse race, but never disrespectful to any of his employees. He taught me so many skills that I am grateful to have worked with him. I guess I am lucky every boss after was excellent, encouraging, and just good family people. I have been self-employed for 37 years, treating people like I have been treated and my son is doing the same.

The worst job I had was when I was a receptionist. They weren't bad people but I was just 18, had moved cities and had a very "It'll be ok" attitude about everything. When I was being trained I didn't really listen or write anything down, when I didn't know what to do I kept bugging the lady who trained me every time even though she'd shown me 100 times what to do in that situation. My performance was slipping and I was home sick and I'd call in sick all the time. That job was the best thing that happened to me because when I got an admin job you can bet I wrote down EVERYTHING, re-read my notes, made myself proceedures to follow until I could do it in my sleep. It taught me that you need to look at a workplace as being YOUR environment, not just a place that you visit for 8 hours a day.

I've had quite a few horrific jobs that I left very quickly (even in my youth I typically worked at places for less than 2 weeks or more than 2 years, no inbetween) - I think the absolute worst was a pharmacy where I had only cashier experience but they expected me to do everything, give customers health advice (!) and even fill prescriptions and then pharmacists would just sign off on them. We were supposed to only use the restroom on our lunch breaks during 8 hr shifts and when I did go to the restroom every 2-3 hours everyone would look at each other like "OMG I cannot believe she's going to the restroom!" I wasn't trying to hold it all day especially on my period so I quit after about 10 days.

I have had several crap jobs where I ether did not not get paid at all or no final pay checks. Another issue was employers wanting you to work four weeks before yo got paid. My favorite working security was uniforms. They'd issue you rags and then charge you for a new shirt if lost or damaged. I mean your 1982 Chevette gets totaled in an accident insurance isn't buying you a brand new Corvette. Worst job ever was working for an ambulance company whose parent company was a pharmacy. The owner hired a friend to run one of the pharmacies in his chain. Guy kept the place turmoil and was stealing drugs to trade for sex and roofie and rape. Both lost license and bad mouthed all former employees as they did not know who turned them in. Funny how employers can fire you with no notice but demand two weeks notice. Then there is even though an employer bad mouths you bringing up people went to jail and others losts their license makes you bitter.

The sad thing is companies like you describe. Never learn that when employees like working at a place. Their productivity is much higher. I wont work anyplace like that anymore. I don't have to so why do it. They deserve the employees they get. I worked at a soap factory once in northwestern az close to bullhead. They would treat people like shit. So they would get sabotaged by their employees. It was some funny shit. The same thing the owner had her family working their. The manager and his son and his wife. The only reason they all had jobs because the owner felt sorry for her sister.They were all total idiots.Constantly going through employees. etc. When the owner wasnt there. The son was getting blow jobs in the bathroom. from the wifey. They would screw off etc. It was a laugh a day working there.I heard she finally sold that company. I would name the place. But the new owners don't deserve it. Im sure their glass cleaner doesnt streak anymore. 😂

The job you are talking about sounds like straight out abuse...! I noticed, my body will tell me when my job/work place becomes toxic, so i rely on that in the future. I quit my job in february because my health was declining very fast in a few weeks. I´m still out of work unfortunately. But my health got so much better and i had a lot of time to think about my choices that i made.

OMG we had an uneducated manager like that where I used to work in government she would walk around and just take note on who was talking to who. She was very rude and loud and she made meetings feel like a bar fight.

I've seen a work environment like that. The records dept. of a police department in a large Georgia city was a customer of a company I worked for. I was on site a bit for a few months, and the woman who managed the department was incredibly stupid and a major bitch. I'm sure she made everyone there incredibly miserable.
