Dr. Chris, thank you so much for your service. I am a nurse oriented in Operating Theatre ......i wish to work as a volunteer community nurse soon for teams or doctors like you in the community. It is really quite an experience there and needs an overwhelming change and "professional-ing" the chainlinks of healthcare. But it is so heartwarming for foreign medical volunteers to be in the Philippines. Bless you sir and your girlfriend

Thank you as a Filipino American I did something like this for 4 yrs in Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia etc…. In the early 2000’s. I miss those days when people do good and Don’t post it on social media. I’ve been on these meetings with international volunteers with different groups and sometimes yes we are thankful people want to help but sometimes the way they talk about the people and the place people volunteer in were very condescending. I hope your purpose is bring awareness, encourage others to do it too and not just to post it and get clout

Hi Dr. Chris, Thanks for your services. One of the things you have to consider about bringing a family member is that unlike 1st world countries, hospitals need family members to guarantee payment. It’s pay first before service there. That includes meds and supplies. There is also some long standing colonial mentality for white or mestizo skin color.
@a.v.24914 ай бұрын
That’s preposterous. Didn’t know healthcare was like that in the Philippines or atleast in the rural. They really should change that policy. Imagine waiting for a family member to just receive medical assistance with the risk of dying any hour.
@richdub77694 ай бұрын
@@a.v.2491 I can’t speak for the particular location you are at but I am only speaking from family experience. Also some govt hospitals may not have the same resources and equipment that the west is accustomed to. They do the best with what they have. Some expats may have health insurance that may change the treatment availability but may be different for the low income workers.

Thank you for addressing the ear protection. Filipinos tend to be very loud during fiestas or celebrations. Protecting your ears, is one of the things we don’t really care about during these. As a kid, I was exposed to loud sounds of discos that their vibrations ran through the house. You could feel the vibrations while trying to sleep. My Lola’s house is just beside the basketball court/stage so we get the blast of it. Now as an adult, I have hearing problems. Thank you Doctor Chris for your good deeds. May God bless you and your fiancée!

Great video. This is a positive change from the typical content i have been seeing featuring poverty in the Philippines. I say this because I've noticed western content creators going to Manila slums just to make content, get views and really do nothing else. The tone of those videos is a happy tour of the slums to show it to curious people online. It's quite disturbing that these kinds of content creators are using people who know no better to make money

In most cases, the budget for the LGUs gets corrupted, unfortunately. Check out the local politician's residence and see how stark the contrast is between their families and their constituents. Even if you want to run to change the system from the inside, it can get dangerous due to their private armies and squads. I cry for my country sometimes. When corruption is in the culture, it's a cancer that's hard to treat.

Would like to retire in the Philippines. The only thing that holds me back is, am I going to get a good health care. I was born in the Philippines, my family and I moved to the U.S. when I was 16 in the early 70’s. I am 67 now. My parents knew Filipino doctors that moved here in the U.S. that had to take an examination before they can actually practice and some couldn’t past. What you posted on your vlog is what concerns me as I have several health issues. Anyway, thank you. Good day to you. Really enjoy your vlog.

I hope I haven't put you off. You have to remember that all my volunteering has taken place in very remote communities. I can't speak for healthcare in major cities but I'm sure it would be better resourced than where I have been working. Also, any doctors moving to the US (not just Filipino) have to take further exams. Including me with a UK medical degree. It's supposed to be one of the hardest medical exams there is and I'm sure doctors all over the world would fail it. Doesn't necessarily reflect if they are good doctors or not.

I love the very cheap oral salbutamol (pill form). I bought them from the Philippines and take some along with me in case I get an asthmatic attack and it's actually very effective. More effective than the regular breathing treatment using inhaler or nebulizer, unless I use duoneb. Otherwise, very effective and insanely cheap.

Emergency services in the Philippines is not treating patients without family member cause maybe there is no one to pay for it. Thats the only reason. I am first aider from Red Cross in Sultan Kudarat and we were instructed at the training center not to start any treatment unless there is approval from the patient. Or if patient is cold out then from bystander who needs to stay beside you all through your treatment.

You're doing an amazing job, and I thank you for helping poor communities in Tacloban. However, be careful talking about the poor healthcare system and the dire situation of the poor people you're helping especially if it will make our politicians look bad. An Australian nun who dedicated 20+ years of her life helping poor Filipino communities was deported for bringing attention to the people and the communities she'd helped.

Have you volunteered in your country too? I'm pretty sure that there are people dying just because they can't afford healthcare which can be too costly.

YEHA BRO it aint only you that gets shocked about the no companion, no treatment policy here in the PH. Even locals are just in disbelief about it. You are misinformed about the family ethic here. There are a lot of people who live alone with no family connections be it from conflict or out of the country or being single. They too have to wait or hope that one of their friends will show up for them.
