You don't need an internship. Corporate culture often sucks. If you're hardworking and mind your own business, they might perceive you as lacking communication skills. Don't get involved in their petty jokes. Office employees often use interns to do boring tasks and then steal the credit. I personally dislike interns who try to act cool and think they know everything. I will suggest build connections with professionals in your field on Twitter, learn and share your knowledge publicly, and consider freelancing. Escape the corporate grind and wage slavery by building your own agency.

My internship taught me so much that I literally still keep the notebook from it in my bag at work today. It was like school plus work that taught me more than I even needed for my current job. It sucked ass to work for free and drive an hour each way(plus gas costs). But it also had lessons and homework plus practical, oral and written tests. There were multiple mentors who were actively trying to teach me stuff when they had a chance and I knew what I was supposed to do if everyone was too busy to teach me. If they actually have a plan to teach you something then it’s definitely worth it, if they treat you as a slave well…

What sucks about internships is that besides being unpaid, many times internships are needed to pad the resume as work experience to hopefully then land a real full time job with a paid salary and benefits, because many jobs nowadays needs lots of work experiences to even get the foot in the door. The dilemma of "I need a job but the job requires experience", so therefore I guess that's why unpaid internships exists.
