They cut their speech because they wanted to talk about how poorly paid the VFX industries are getting paid by Hollywood. In most movies, the studios only get about 5% cut. Hollywood looks for cheap studios, especially overseas to do their VFX for cheap and the American companies need to lower their bid to get producers to hire them. Life of Pi was mostly shot on green screen therefore most of the movie involves effects. Imagine doing most of the movie and only getting 5% of the proceeds! Rhythm and Hues, the studio they work for, just laid off 200 employees right before the Oscars. With the amount they received from movies sales, they can't afford to pay their special effect artists.
@rustylarry7465
@rustylarry7465 2 жыл бұрын
You cant really fault hollywood for going the cheap route, it's called competition. It's the government's fault for why the cost of living is so high, too much beauracracy, i say just embrace free trade, not with all this tariffs and such. Now as for what transpired here, i'm conflicted and at a loss for words, on the other hand rdj seems to be giving them due credit, but as always it looks like him giving them pity, the rich man pitying the poor, and doing nothing, y'know gaining the moral high ground making himself look better and virtuous, thats the problem i have with these very left leaning actors, their politics, remember the joss whedon polotical ad, yikes. samuel jackson said that giving them the award is enough respect, i think so too, the actors are employees also, imagine speaking up against your bosses. If there was an analogy, it'd be the difference between america and japan, in regards to tips in restaurants and such, the former expects you to tip, the employer and employee, because they only get paid by the employer if the quota from tips were insufficient and just give them the rest of the money that until that quota is reached, unless you have the good looks or are enthusiastic towards the customer(you can get bigger pay from tips sure if you're lucky), you'll rarely earn tips, very toxic work environment(very demeaning job like retail, amazon employee, fast food), more than half don't want to be waiting tables, they have their dreams too, now they're expected to force a smile and do your best despite the low prospect of actually having a raise, inflation can be a son of a bitch; now the latter doesn't not expect you to tip, in fact they treat it as disrespect, you viewed them like they get the short end of the stick in life, and now its your responsibility to pity and give this viewed as "low-earning employee" extra cash like a beggar in the street needing cash. Hollywood as an entity should stop gatekeeping in political views, you get left leaning people, actors, directors, writers and such, because hollywood does not condone right leaning talent. They should just shut up and be professional, stop with this virtue signalling bullshit, like they had a clean slate in the first place. Hollywood is bleeding, it is imploding, 8 years after your comment, everyone is having fatigue from mediocre content like star wars and the mcu. This is a good example of why hollywood can be insufferable, they should just shut their mouth an do their job, the nature of their work is morally neutral and should treat it as such, you do not have an inherent responsibility to virtue signal, youre just an actor, your inherent responsibility is to do your best to provide quality entertainment, nothing more and nothing less.
@rustylarry7465
@rustylarry7465 2 жыл бұрын
Now for what you were saying, yeah cutting off speeches is not cool, these actors get to preach some toxic ideas and fragile idealogies, or just deplorable virtue signalling to make themselves look better, i dont see them getting their speeches cut, but we get the speeches of vfx artists who get paid less for what work they put in cut, seems unfair to me

Hollywood guilds & unions formed decades ago and the industry won't let VFX artists organize. Party Boi the oscar winners were going on to speak about the state of treatment of visual effects studious in big budget Hollywood films. Essentially the studious are incredibly overworked and work in increasingly worse conditions (lack of benefits, holidays and worse). This is due to increase in demand of visual effects work in big blockbusters without the budget required to fully meet these demands. For example, Marvel films now can have around 1000-3000 visual effects shots in a given film, even with their insane budget it is very difficult to achieve the amount of work done in the amount of time given. The speaker began to talk about an artist in sever financial trouble and his mike was cut off to prevent this.

CGI has gone from bad in the 90s (some good cases though) to extremely good in the late 2000's/early 2010's. Now it is on a downward slope. CGI is getting worse. The visual effects are often really lazy and obvious nowadays. Please compare Black Panther to Pirates of the Caribbean and Avatar. The older films far outclass Black Panther's CGI. Notably Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean is exceptionally well done. CGI is being outsourced to too many studios, often in other countries, who are all trying to undercut eachother meaning that in the end the VFX studios do not have enough time or money to do a stellar job anymore. That is why CGI today often looks worse than in the past. Here is an interesting article: www.engadget.com/2018/02/24/black-panther-vfx-models/

Without these guys, the Oscars wouldn't even be a thing. The Avengers wouldn't be chilling playing skits. Every actor there should've stood up and denounced the absolute lunacy being demonstrated towards their coworkers. Fuck their PR.

As a boy, Pi looks for meaning/comfort in many religions, ultimately embracing different aspects of several of them. His faith is tested many times over the course of the movie, but he holds tight to it. Pi and Richard Parker develop a relationship that sustains both of them, unusual as it might be. Pi survives against the strongest possible odds, facing down vicious storms, hungry animals and self-doubt. His faith sustains him through much of what he faces; he's also determined, hardworking and resourceful, and he cares deeply about his fellow creatures. His father encourages Pi to think critically and question the way things are: "I would rather have you believe in something I disagree with than accept all things."

Now Academy Award winning director Ang Lee has made a breathtaking, mesmerizing and totally astonishing movie of the book. He emphasizes the role of faith in the heart of a young man who loses everything only to gain even more in a harrowing adventure at sea.

Life of Pi is an immersion into the world of imagination: one so powerful, so deeply transformational, that it stands as a cinematic monument to the power of storytelling. Navigating Yann Martel's beloved novel with David Magee's script as guiding star, director Ang Lee proves himself a virtuoso of the versatile in a world so rich and so real that only the miracle of 3D in the hands of a master could put it all into proper perspective. At journey's end, audiences are left to ponder an adventure so life-affirming and a reality so true that they would never dare doubt Dorothy ever left Kansas.

I just had a guy who worked at that studio who did life of pi come in today and talk about that exact thing. He basically said studios bleed money every month they aren’t working on something and life of Pi basically could have went to a cheaper studio and risk it not being as good and used their cheapness as a leverage to make the studio use its staff to work over time without pay. It’s petty fucked up ….. VFX even tho I love practical effects more you have to hand it to them they work their asses off for shit pay

Ang Lee has fashioned the only visual successor to the 3-D artistry of Avatar, amazing us with a scenes of a dazzling school of flying fish, the marvels of luminous jellyfish, the leap of a humpback whale, and ocean water as a source of beauty and terror. In addition, Lee's use of digital technology is magical, especially in the many different scenes involving Richard Parker.

Embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this visual masterpiece from Oscar winner Ang Lee, based on the best-selling novel. After a cataclysmic shipwreck, young Pi Patel finds himself stranded on a lifeboat with only one survivor: a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Bound by the need to survive, the two are cast on an epic journey that must be seen to be believed.

Life of Pi is an exhilarating drama about the mysteries which light up our lives and have no rhyme or reason on their own; the faith that enables us to make a leap into the dark; the teachings of animals; the fierce and tranquil sides of nature; and the powerful instinct we all have for survival. This spiritually alluring film can bring you to a transformed appreciation for the baffling, curious and inexplicable dimensions of life and the world around you.

How unfortunate. I am aware that sometimes unions can be corrupt, lazy and bloated . . . but that applies to many good ideas when they are practiced poorly. When used correctly unions are there to bring balance to the force, so to speak. Sometimes it seems in the US people are so scared still of anything tinted with socialism or communism they miss out on positive things . . .

If you are working in Vfx field u might know making things look real, when they already exist, is more challenging than making fictional characters. And it was not just animal, almost everything, except for boy and boat (and in some scene even boy and boat too) were CG. Work on Hobbit was equally good its just life of pi was more challenging.
