It feels like mars is written more to maximize grimdarkness than to make the mechanicus feel real. The only times they make things efficient is when it makes people miserable. The only times they make things inefficient is when it makes people miserable. Why wouldn’t you make maps for worker areas? What possible benefit could come from your work force getting lost and starving to death? Why don’t they worry about pollutants? Corrosive rain and radiation damage machinery. Why give your workers flavorless food paste and squalid living conditions? Incentives and rest make workers more efficient. At some point, the pornography of misery becomes so absolute that it isn’t miserable any more.
